Translation of page 181

Shame, family honor, duty, and every restraint fall away— what else could happen to the women who dwell in Mithila? Wise friend, what has the handsome dark one filled within his eyes? Is it magic, a spell, a charm, or some enchantment? (27)

Stanza 28

Taking aim, he releases sidelong eyes like arrows, piercing one through; his dancing brows grant the highest peace. Behold this treasury of beauty, before which Love himself is sold— the Creator has liquefied beauty and fashioned him from it. Casting aside modesty, one companion slips away from the gathering and gazes at the kingdom of his beauty without blinking. She looks upon that face with its dark, kohl-lined eyes; Siya’s own limbs thrill at the heart-enchanter’s smile. (28)

Stanza 29

“In this Kali age, your eyes have become wish-fulfilling trees; within them my own eyes long to build their nest. Your eyes are the dark, moonless night of the rainy season, and within them my eyes are masses of dense cloud. Your eyes have become soft drums for music, and within them my eyes are peacocks longing to dance. Your eyes are my eyes, and my eyes belong to yours; your eyes are thieves who have come to steal my eyes.” (29)

“Beloved, you have slain me by letting your curls hang loose; and this gentle smile is your glory and grace!
