Translation of page 117

In the heavens a great assembly of goddesses has formed, and the women of the city too have gathered in throngs. All the companions sing: “What a wondrous doll!” (1)

Queen Kaikeyi eagerly lifts the veil. She stares, loses herself, then at last regains composure and says: “The beauty of the entire universe has descended upon this bride; neither Rati, Lakshmi, Saraswati, nor Uma can equal her.

“May this Indira, fit for a palace, be blessed; may the bride be blessed with ever-new conjugal play and good fortune. May this doll always remain immersed in happiness.” (2)

Wise and steadfast Queen Kausalya is so overwhelmed with delight that she forgets to place the jeweled necklace upon her daughter-in-law. Queen Sumitra immediately puts the necklace into her hand; giving the precious ornament to the bride, Kausalya fulfills her heart’s desire. “Seeing the bride’s face, our very lives are fulfilled, friends!” (3)

In this way all the queens behold her lovely face— what poet could reckon the offerings they make? The courtyard is heaped high with ornaments and gifts, while celestial women, overcome with joy, carpet it with flowers. Every one of them is filled with love, friends. (4)

When the queens withdraw, the others’ turn arrives. They sit close beside her and circle mustard seed to avert the evil eye.
