Divine Grace
The Lord commands in the Gītā, “Therefore remember me at all times.” This teaching must enter our lives. Let every moment pass in remembrance of God. There is no need to determine precisely what he is like. One may conceive him as without qualities or with qualities, formless or embodied, differentiated or undifferentiated; one may love him as Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Durgā, Śiva, or by any other form and name. Let each person remember the name and form that attracts the heart. One may remember his name, līlā, form, or essential reality. The important thing is that the mind remain joined to him. The certain fruit is God-realization, and there is no doubt of it.
“You shall come to me alone, without doubt.” This is the Lord's pledge. No moment of life should pass without remembering him. A second excellent practice is repetition of the divine name with the tongue. It is exceedingly simple and contains nothing objectionable. Train the tongue to repeat without interruption whatever divine name it loves. All former impurities and accumulated sins will thereby be destroyed. This is an essential practice to embody and encourage.
A third and still more necessary matter is to become completely free of doubt about attaining God through the power of his grace. Resolve inwardly, “By divine grace I shall assuredly attain the Lord in this very life.” This greatly assists realization. Despite our incapacity, unworthiness, and lack of qualification, grace is so measureless, boundless, and powerful that, upon taking refuge in it, every defect, obstacle, and impediment withdraws through its influence. The Lord himself declares, “With your mind fixed on me, by my grace you shall cross all difficulties.” Entrust yourself to grace and become absorbed in him. No reliance in the world is greater, no power higher, and no method more effective. Tulasīdāsa says that he has this one conviction: the Lord's very form is made of grace.
He has no confidence in himself, his practices, his mind, or his senses, for all are turned away from the Lord. His mind has never truly rested in God; free of all pretence, it remains naturally and constantly attached to objects. Attachment to objects needs no special effort and remains continuous and unwavering. There is no hypocrisy in it. All his limbs are turned away from the Lord's feet, and only the tongue has taken shelter behind the name. Yet he possesses one supreme treasure, the single-minded conviction that the Lord's form is grace itself. The Lord made of grace must bestow grace. Whatever kind of being one may be, once grace descends, what remains unattained and what obstacle can mislead one? Every obstruction is shattered before divine grace. Relying upon it, one should resolve that God-realization will certainly occur in this very birth.
The fourth teaching is that God dwells in every creature, or that he himself appears as every creature. Both formulations are true. Keep this remembrance continuously in thought and conduct. When a son, wife, servant, sanitation worker, or anyone else appears before you, remember at once, “My chosen Lord stands before me in this form,” and bow inwardly. Then ask his permission for the conduct appropriate to the roles being played: you play servant and I master, you wife and I husband, you son and I father. Pray for the strength never to forget that it is the Lord himself standing before you in that form. Once this becomes practice, the entire day will be filled with visions of God, and all one's actions will become worship.
The Gītā supports this: “From whom all beings arise and by whom all this is pervaded, worshipping him through one's own work, a human being attains perfection” (18.46). The whole moving and unmoving universe has arisen from God and is filled with him. He is everywhere, at all times, and within everyone. We may therefore worship him anywhere, at any time, and in any form. Our own work is the material of worship. We act according to the role entrusted to us while remembering that the Lord is present, and thus worship through our work. Try this practice for a day or even an hour. Remember that Nārāyaṇa has come in the form of whoever appears, and the experience and vision of Nārāyaṇa will begin.
Four spiritual disciplines have therefore been given: constant contemplation of God, ceaseless repetition of his name with the tongue, freedom from doubt about attaining him through grace, and conduct toward all beings while seeing him everywhere. In practical conduct there is one beautiful rule which, if embodied, sets all relationships right: “Do not do to others what is adverse to yourself.” Test yourself against this measure and refrain from doing to others what your own heart finds painful. Abuse, humiliation, injury, loveless treatment, and hostile wishes hurt us, so we should never direct them toward another. Before acting, exchange places in imagination and ask what we would desire in the other person's position. Give others the respect, affection, care in sickness, and help in helplessness that we ourselves welcome.
Four qualities are central to such conduct. First, preserve everyone's dignity, including that of a servant, a child, or anyone considered lower in station. Never let another feel humiliated because of rank. Speak and act with care for that person's honor. Second, let conduct be without deceit. Milk mixed with water remains together until a few drops of acid separate them; likewise deception breaks relationship. We ourselves desire truth, so our dealings must be true. Third, act in love, meaning so as to give the other happiness. Wanting the other to make us happy is desire, not love. Nārada's aphorism is “happiness in the beloved's happiness.” To rejoice in another's joy and grieve in another's sorrow is the sign of love. Yet the happiness given must not be merely superficial; discern whether it will bring true happiness or harm.

If a sick child mistakenly asks for harmful food, a mother who gives it merely to please the child does not act for the child's welfare. The happiness we give must therefore be truly beneficial. Four qualities should govern conduct: respect, truth, love, and welfare. Purify every act by these four. If any is absent, fear that an error is being made and that some harmful result will follow.
Another essential teaching is the Lord's phrase, “Free from hatred toward every being.” Hatred is a grave sin and indeed a root of sin. Enmity leads surely to degradation. Resolve not to die carrying hatred for anyone. If enmity arises, remove it from the heart before death. Hold compassion for the poor and afflicted, friendship for all, and deep mercy wherever it is needed.
At the end of his instruction to Sanātana Gosvāmī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu reduced everything to three teachings in a simple Bengali verse: compassion for living beings, taste for the divine name, and service to Vaiṣṇavas. He said that apart from these three he knew nothing. Let there be mercy rather than cruelty, relish for the name, and continual effort to remain in good company. Good association includes not only people but every wholesome thing. Abandon as far as possible bad places, food, literature, sights, and anything harmful received by the senses. Whatever increases love for God is auspicious; whatever increases attachment to sense objects is inauspicious. Apply this simple test to everything seen, heard, touched, tasted, spoken, visited, encountered, or used in conduct. If its company deepens love for God, it is supremely beneficial.
Tulasīdāsa regards as beneficial, worshipful, and dearer than life whatever generates love for Rāma's feet. He also says:
Let that wealth, home, happiness, friend, mother, father, and brother burn if, when present before us, they do not render a thousandfold service to Rāma's feet.
Even the greatest sorrow deserves a heartfelt welcome if it awakens love for those feet. Even the greatest worldly pleasure deserves to be burned away if it separates us from God. A tiny spark can consume a hut when the wind rises, so one should fear even slight contact with the inauspicious. Conversely, every measure of auspicious company brings blessing. Cultivate taste for holy company and disinterest in unholy company. Caitanya's phrase “service to Vaiṣṇavas” means associating with devotees of God. Its root purpose is to join the mind to God by keeping company with those devotees and saints who teach us to do so.
Only two may truly be called causeless lovers of us: God and the saints. Even if someone harms them, there is no danger that they will return harm. Their nature is to benefit even the offender. As an axe cuts sandalwood, the sandalwood perfumes the axe's wooden handle and makes its attacker like itself. Nārada says that the company of the great is rare, difficult to comprehend, and unfailing. Tulasīdāsa says saints are found only by Hari's grace. Even after meeting one, recognition is difficult. Our intellect is like a scale built to weigh immense stones. A tiny but priceless diamond may lodge unnoticed in it and fail to move the beam. Just so, an intellect dominated by sense objects cannot weigh a saint. One needs the vision of a saint or an eye given by divine grace; otherwise one sees only the outer form and cannot distinguish a genuine saint from a hypocrite. Since we possess no reliable instrument for testing, the scriptures give a practical criterion: whoever's presence, instruction, and company increase attraction to God and divine qualities is a saint for us, whatever the outward appearance.
Near Anūpaśahara lived a man whose defects temporarily subsided through holy company. He concluded that he had become a saint and soon desired to preach for the world's good. The speaker admits this weakness strongly within himself. The eagerness to instruct others easily becomes delusion born of a concealed desire for honor. The thought “I am now perfected” is harmful in spiritual practice.
Another story shows the danger of projection. A traveller on the Ganges bank saw a young woman laughing with a man of about forty and handing him a glass. He imagined an illicit relationship and alcohol. Soon a boat was caught in a whirlpool and overturned with about twenty people aboard. The man threw aside the glass, leapt into the river at risk to his own life, and rescued them. The observer wondered how someone he had judged immoral could show such self-sacrifice. When he approached with questions, the rescuer first enlisted him in helping remove water from the victims' stomachs. The woman joined them. Only after all were safe did the man explain that she was his daughter, newly returned from her husband's home, and that the glass contained Ganges water she had brought when he became thirsty.
The observer then condemned himself. The alcohol and lust had existed in his own mind. He had projected liquor upon sacred Ganges water and immorality upon the pure affection of father and daughter. We often impose our own inner impurity upon others and declare them guilty. Thus one should be alert when sensual desire, greed for wealth, and craving for honor are present, yet also remember that we can err when judging whether these defects are actually present. The first two are gross and deeply corrupting; honor is subtler and may persist far into the life of a good person. A supposed saint attached to sensuality or wealth is not a saint for us. One should also beware of anyone who wishes to receive worship in God's place and misuses scriptural praises of the devotee in order to claim, “I am a saint and all that God is resides in me.”

Scriptural sayings that exalt the guru or devotee are true. One well-known verse asks whose feet should be touched when guru and Govinda both stand before us, and some explain that the guru is greater because he revealed Govinda. Yet a person may misuse such statements to have himself worshipped in God's place. We must remain cautious, including in our own lives. Sensual attraction, greed for wealth, and desire for honor harm householders as well as renunciants. Money honestly earned for livelihood is not a fault, but attachment to gold leads to coveting another's property, and sensual attachment leads to coveting another's spouse. These are grave sins. One should also avoid seeking personal worship and withdraw from places where praise and honor are bestowed, seeing their danger clearly.
The speaker candidly says that he is not qualified to preach this. The indwelling Lord alone knows whether praise tastes sweet or bitter to him. He can admit that attraction to women and money is slight, yet he feels attachment to honor in his own mind. It is best to confess this before warning others. The fault remains sinful and degrading. Constant vigilance is needed lest one become engrossed in personal worship, reputation, and praise. Honor tastes very sweet, but it is poison.
The desire to leave one's name in history after death is another delusion. The self has no name, while the body will one day be burned. To identify the body's name as one's own is profound ignorance. One who longs for a statue, writes an autobiography to praise himself, or seeks historical fame remains ignorant. The formless self has neither name nor form. Worship of this five-element puppet belongs to those who worship matter, not the Self. Praise and reputation are a sweet knife cutting inwardly. They wash away virtuous deeds and accumulated merit. Therefore guard against them, sensual attraction, and greed.
Human birth does not come repeatedly. It has been received by great grace and must not be wasted. No loss is greater. Yet however much life remains is sufficient for God-realization. Nothing previously done can obstruct it. If the remaining span, whether an age, a year, a month, an hour, a minute, or only the final breath, is surrendered to the Lord, even one breath is enough. There is no reason for despair. Understand that human life exists solely for attaining God, not for enjoyment. A human being absorbed in pleasure loses humanity. From life's beginning Madālasā sang to her son that he was pure, awakened, stainless, and free from worldly māyā, and should go attain the Lord. Such was the lullaby of our tradition.
The scriptural phrase “desiring that, they practice brahmacarya” expresses the former aim of education. Children entered the gurukula not for wealth but for realization of Brahman. Thousands lived in those āśramas under great restraint: without shoes or cosmetics, avoiding songs and thoughts of women, sleeping on the ground, begging food and first placing it before the teacher, taking only what was given. Modern boarding houses are unrestrained because the aim is no longer established in childhood as realization of Brahman.
A human being is born only to attain God. Humanity is not a species meant for enjoyment. If human discrimination becomes devoted to pleasure, the person turns demonic and violent. Factories, industries, wars, violent enterprises, and inventions then surpass slaughterhouses. The movement toward enjoyment is a fall, and humanity cannot survive it. Human dignity consists in directing life toward God.
The final plea is therefore not to forget the true beauty and purpose of human life. Everything received has come by divine grace. Devote life to God alone and regard whatever obstructs this as an enemy. Every being and object is for him. Offer whatever life and however many breaths remain: “Until now I have been ungrateful and squandered your capital. Only seven breaths remain, perhaps only two; I offer them to you.” The Lord will say, “At last, after losing everything, he has come for refuge. Do not worry. You have come, and I have come.” The way to God is this direct. Never forget life's principal work, and remain devoted to it.
