The Lord's Lap Is Empty for Everyone
There is a beautiful couplet:
Delusion is the very form of sorrow; strike it down and drive it out.
Abandon attachment to the world, and then deliverance will come.
The meaning is that in human life delusion is the form of suffering, the root of suffering, and that which produces suffering. Therefore, this delusion must be destroyed and expelled from one's life. Delusion is the root cause of attachment. To perceive in a thing what is not actually there is delusion. Delusion turns the intellect contrary, and a contrary intellect causes contrary perception. Delusion is called darkness. The Lord says:
That intellect, enveloped in darkness, which regards adharma as dharma and sees every matter in a contrary way, O Pārtha, is tāmasic.
(Bhagavad Gītā 18.32)
O Arjuna, the intellect that declares adharma to be dharma is tāmasic. The intellect covered by tamoguṇa, which shows every action and every thing in reverse, is called delusion. Apart from the Supreme Self, the concentrated fullness of being, consciousness, and bliss, happiness has no existence anywhere in the world. To imagine happiness in worldly objects apart from the Supreme Self is delusion. Supreme happiness, supreme bliss, and supreme peace exist in the Lord alone. To forget this and imagine happiness where the fires of jealousy, hatred, and similar passions blaze, where unrest and sorrow are ceaseless, is delusion. Love for the lotus feet of the Lord cannot arise while this delusion remains. Its destruction is therefore essential. To destroy delusion, one must endeavor to turn the course of life toward the Lord. These two processes depend upon one another. Delusion is destroyed when life's movement turns toward the Lord, and movement toward the Lord becomes possible when genuine delusion is destroyed. Each supports the other; neither is secondary. In some people delusion first begins to disappear and movement toward the Lord follows.

In others, delusion is destroyed after they begin moving toward the Lord. Of the two, however, the easier course is first to begin moving toward him. In both the Gītā and Patañjali's Yoga philosophy, practice comes first and dispassion afterward. The Yoga Sūtra says, “Its restraint is through practice and dispassion,” and the Gītā says, “Yet by practice, O Kaunteya, and by dispassion it is mastered.” The mind is restrained through practice and dispassion: practice first, dispassion afterward. The reason is that the Lord is solid fullness; there is no hollow within him. Therefore, one of his names is Kūṭastha, the immutable one.
Everything is filled with the Lord. The Upaniṣad says, “When the whole is taken from the whole, the whole alone remains.” Describing the Lord's fullness, it declares that even when fullness is removed from fullness, fullness remains. Thus the Lord is eternally whole and solid. No other thing can enter what is wholly solid. A second thing can enter only where some hollow remains. Therefore, when divine vision arises, nothing but the Lord is seen even in this world, for nothing exists apart from him. The world has not entered the Lord; it has arisen within our perception. Suppose someone wishes to remove water from a vessel but cannot pour it out. How may it be removed? Begin filling the vessel with molten lead. Lead is dense. As more and more lead enters, more and more water comes out, while the lead occupies its former space. When the lead fills the vessel to the top, the water leaves of itself. This is therefore a beautiful path: turn life toward the Lord. The more life becomes engaged in him, the more it withdraws of itself from enjoyments. One may also withdraw by seeing the sorrow and defect in enjoyments. That is a good path, but it is somewhat dry. One must keep breaking rock and carving out a road. Perhaps one eventually finds something by which the rock breaks and joy thereafter arises of itself. Concerning this, the Lord says that you will not have to cross the ocean of becoming; he himself will carry you across.

For those whose minds have entered me, O Pārtha, I soon become the deliverer from the ocean of the mortal world.
(Bhagavad Gītā 12.7)
In the Gītā the Lord says that those whose minds have become absorbed in him, who turn toward him, are carried by him across the ocean of the world. They do not have to cross by themselves. He is the one who carries them safely and happily to the far shore. Across what does he carry them? He states it openly and explicitly: “from the ocean of worldly existence.”
Imagine a man swimming across the Gaṅgā. If he remembers the art of swimming perfectly, does not lose his breath, and escapes the obstacles, aquatic creatures, whirlpools, and powerful currents along the way, he will certainly cross. There is no doubt, but it is difficult. Another man may board a boat that carries him across at once, without fear of collision or sinking, while he remains in the company of something that continuously delights his mind and senses. Of this the Lord says, “I become the deliverer.” It is beautiful. The Lord comes to this shore of the ocean of existence with a boat; how else could he carry us across? The words themselves possess literary beauty. Vyāsa is an incarnation of the Lord, a seer beyond time, a sage, and also a great poet. He says, “I become the deliverer from the ocean of worldly existence.” What kind of ocean? “The ocean of mortal worldly existence.” Its waters are death ceaselessly surging; it is filled with death, and dying is its very nature. From this ocean of worldly existence, he becomes the one who carries us across. Crossing is from this shore to the other, which means that he stands ready on this very shore with the boat of his grace. He says, “Come, sit in my boat, and cross.” What happens upon boarding it? Three beautiful things found nowhere else. The boat is made of happiness, so crossing in it involves no hardship. One need only remain seated and do nothing, passing over without effort. Second, there is no fear that the boat will sink. Everything else may sink, but divine grace has never sunk.

Every other power may sink, but divine grace does not. It is the Lord's power that destroys every obstacle and bestows every treasure. Its name is grace, anugraha. “With your mind fixed on me, by my grace you shall cross all fortresses of difficulty.” The Lord says that through his grace a creature passes beyond every hardship. The word durga means a fortress. Whoever takes refuge in the Lord conquers the great fortresses of difficulty. The first feature of the boat is ease: there is no need to beat one's arms and legs or churn the water. There is no fear of a whirlpool or a crocodile. Sit comfortably in happiness. Second, the boat will not sink, and you will reach the other shore. The third feature is especially beautiful: the company of the boatman. Keep gazing at him throughout the crossing. Beholding Śyāmasundara's beautiful face, contemplating his extraordinary splendor, drinking the nectar of his beauty, and ceaselessly tasting the nectar of his sweetness and rasa, travel onward in delight. This is an easy, joyful, beautiful, firm, and certain path by which a person becomes engaged in the Lord.
Rabindranath Tagore wrote a beautiful Bengali song whose sense is as follows. A sinner comes to the bank of a river wishing to cross. Wherever rivers must be crossed, there are boatmen and boats. The boat runs only during fixed hours; after night falls, its service closes. A traveler comes from far away, running and panting all along the road in the hope of crossing, but finds no boat. He says:
Why should I be deprived of those feet?
I have waited in such hope that I may attain them, if not in life, then in death.
The sense is: why should I be deprived of those feet? Why should I remain deprived after asking? I have come with such hope. Will you not seat this afflicted sinner in the boat that carries sinners across? I have come swallowing the dust of the road, my eyes filled with dust. Shall I arrive only to find that the boat has closed to me? Why then do humble sinners sit here and cry, “Lord, carry us across”? You will have to carry them across.

The Lord stands forever ready to carry us across, waiting with the boat. His joyful boat is so excellent that there is no fear of its ever sinking; it is filled with happiness alone. Travel the entire way in delight, feasting as you go. When will it arrive? The Lord answers, “Soon, O Pārtha, for those whose minds are absorbed in me.” Arjuna, there will be no delay. Once I undertake to carry you across, and I am already ready, the crossing will not take long. There is no obstacle and no sorrow. You will cross immediately and happily. Therefore, the beautiful disposition is to desire love for the lotus feet of the Lord and begin loving them. Attachment directed toward the Lord is called love. Supreme attachment to God is called devotion. We know very little about the nature of pure attachment. Rāga, anurāga, and perfectly pure anurāga differ from one another. Vaiṣṇava scriptures describe eight levels of love, of which anurāga is the sixth. Beyond it comes bhāva and then mahābhāva, which is the very form of Śrī Rādhā. Śrī Rādhikā embodies mahābhāva. Anurāga means that no importance and not even independent existence remain for anything else. Love withdraws from every other place and is offered solely for the beloved at the beloved's feet. This is the elevated state of anurāga. The eight levels of love are prīti, sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga, bhāva, and mahābhāva. Mahābhāva itself has many divisions, among which mohana and mādana are especially beautiful. These matters should not even be spoken or heard by those who look for faults. Those whose hearts contain pure devotional feeling may speak and hear them.
I was saying that if we begin to walk toward the Lord and the course of our life turns toward him, delusion will disappear of itself. Someone may ask how movement is possible while delusion remains. This raises a real question. There are two kinds of practitioners in the world and also two kinds of sinners. Some know that delusion is present in them. Others are ill but regard illness as health. There are two kinds of patients. Diabetes can produce excessive hunger. If someone does not recognize diabetes, regards excessive hunger as a fine sign of health, and begins eating more sugar, that person will die. A patient who recognizes disease as disease differs from one who mistakes disease for health.

Just as these two patients differ, so delusion has two forms. One is the deluded person who has become entirely devoid of discrimination and has no room left for remembrance of the Lord. The Gītā 7.15 describes such people:
Evildoers do not take refuge in me: the deluded, the lowest among human beings, those whose knowledge has been stolen by māyā, and those who have assumed a demonic disposition.
The Lord places such people in the category of the lowest. They are sinful, deluded, and sheltered in a demonic disposition. They take pride in sinful acts. After committing sin, they consider themselves clever and intelligent. Sin does not appear bad to them; they attribute importance to it. The Lord says that such evildoers do not worship him at all. They are therefore deluded and the lowest among human beings. Yet there are other sinners who commit sin from habit, attachment, curiosity, imitation, or perceived necessity. All these are weaknesses. A pain nevertheless remains within their minds: “Alas, our life is moving along an evil path; we are falling.”
The current of delusion is so powerful that such a person cannot protect himself. When sin appears before him, he falls. After committing it, he regrets it and repeatedly thinks, “Something terrible has happened. I will never do this again.” Yet he repeats it. This is called delusion. One day the inner being of a person caught in such delusion cries out. Moments often come in all our lives when our own sins become visible to us. Such a moment is greatly auspicious. The hour when a person sees his own sins, repents of them, and feels the heart burn is highly blessed. It occurs in some rare, striving sinner caught in delusion. We see that no one openly assists a sinner. Someone may help while protecting himself, perhaps secretly hiding stolen goods, but fear keeps him from joining in the theft. He says, “Brother, people will become suspicious of me, so do not sit near me. Sit separately.” Even a father distances himself from a son who commits an evil deed and becomes notorious.

The father may say, “I always knew he was worthless. He will ruin our family. What connection have we with him? It was merely fate that made him my son. What have I to do with him? He is the disgrace of the lineage.” No one wishes to stand beside another in wrongdoing. The Lord alone says even to a sinner, “Come. My lap is ready, and my doors are not closed. You may have committed the gravest possible sins, but if you wish to enter my lap, come. I shall wash away your sins. Take refuge in me. My lap is empty for you.” Does a mother ever tell a child covered in filth, “Bathe first, and only then will I take you in my lap”? The moment she hears the filthy child cry, she runs and cleans the child with her own hands. If a mother speaks and acts in this way, can the Lord, within whose heart surges the limitless ocean of affection belonging to infinitely many mothers, bear to watch a living being's misery? One need only turn one's face toward him.
When a sinner becomes pained by his own sin, he turns toward the Lord. Do you know what happens the very moment he turns? It is wondrous. A person begins to leave a dark room and opens the door; light immediately enters. It is the nature of light to enter. Entering the dark room, it destroys the darkness and spreads itself. In the same way, if our life moves even slightly toward the Lord, he begins to enter us and his light begins to shine within. When light comes, darkness departs. Once we become engaged in the Lord, delusion will disappear of itself; we will not have to remove it. The Lord himself will carry us across the river of delusion. This is a source of immense assurance. The matter is very simple. Weep before the Lord. The weeping must not be false; there must be pain within. The Lord is certainly not a physician whose medicine fails or who cannot diagnose the disease. His medicine is unfailing. Divine grace is said to be infallible. Among all the Lord's powers, the power of grace is supreme. Wherever grace begins its work, all the other powers follow it and begin to serve:
Upon one who receives Rāma's grace, everyone else also bestows grace.
The Lord's power of grace is so extraordinary that even when the Lord strikes someone down in wrath, grace declares, “I shall carry this one to your abode at once.”

The Lord may strike down, but grace carries across. The power of divine grace does not examine who someone is, what that person is like, or what the past record contains. Grace looks only at what the person desires now. If the cry, the weeping, and the anguish are genuine, grace surges forth to absorb that person into itself. The moment grace begins to work, all obstacles fall away of themselves. We manufacture new obstacles in the name of removing obstacles. Instead, let us become humble and fall at the Lord's feet. He is the friend of the lowly and purifier of the fallen, so full of affection, mercy, compassion, love, and goodwill that he will embrace us. “You belong to the one who has no one else.” Rabindranath said: you are the one who belongs to those who have no one. The Lord never rejects anyone by asking who the person is, from what country, wearing what dress, Muslim or Hindu, brāhmaṇa or butcher, highly virtuous or adulterous, man or woman, outcaste or śūdra, child or elder. None of this matters. He looks only at the anguished cry, how much pain and humility it holds, and whether it is true. Whoever has called toward the Lord with anguish and lowliness has been made his own.
The Lord does no injustice. Mercy is his justice, deliverance is his justice, and making us his own is his justice. It is his nature, so how could he abandon it? If a murderer stands before the sun, does the sun say, “I will give you no light or warmth”? Whether a murderer or a virtuous person approaches, sunlight is the same for all. Such is the Lord's nature. The Lord's form is made of grace. Tulasīdāsa says, “Tulasī has this one conviction: the Lord's form is made of grace.” We have this single faith that the Lord himself is constituted of grace. If he were to abandon grace, he would cease to be. Grace is the very substance of every limb of his body. With open hands, divine grace distributes itself to everyone, saying, “Take me.” There is not the slightest reason for despair. We have only to turn toward him. He will do all the work. Turn the course of life in that direction, and the Lord will destroy delusion. When he acts, there is no delay. For the light to enter, we need only open the door.

For an ordinary lamp we must bring a wick, oil, a lantern, and a match. A gust of wind may extinguish it. Without oil it cannot burn; without a glass chimney the wind may put it out; if the wick burns away, the light will cease. But this divine light needs neither oil nor wick. The Lord abides in his own majesty, shines by his own light, and consists of his own essential nature. What can his grace not accomplish? It destroys all the darkness of delusion, removes every evil within, and makes a person fit for him. When one takes refuge in the Lord and turns one's life toward him, he makes that person worthy of himself.
Āruṇi was not learned and had no interest in study, yet through his teacher's grace he suddenly became master of every branch of knowledge. He knew only service and obedience to the teacher. Told to tend the field, he saw no other way to stop the water and lay down as the embankment, remaining in the water all night. In the morning his teacher called, “Where are you, my son Āruṇi?” “Here.” “What are you doing?” “Stopping the water.” “How?” “By lying here.” Melted with paternal affection, the teacher blessed him to receive all learning at once, and the teacher's grace immediately bestowed all knowledge. Dhruva too was a small child who did not know how to speak, while the Lord stood before him. He possessed neither words, language, nor discrimination. The Bhāgavata says that the Lord lightly touched his throat with the conch and all knowledge entered his speech. When the Lord wishes to act, how long can delusion or sin survive? There is delay only because we tolerate delay. Our faith and longing are deficient. If longing arises and we trust the Lord's goodwill, we will turn toward him.

Light is obtained the moment life's movement turns toward the Lord. This does not happen through talk. We may speak little or much; the Lord sees what is within now, not the past. He knows exactly what we sincerely desire at this moment, for he is the indwelling and subtle seer. We may deceive ourselves, but cannot deceive him. He sees the truth present in our longing, surrender, and desire to turn toward him. Let that longing be genuine, and he will do all the work. Our one task is to maintain constant remembrance of him.
“All conduct is offered to him, and there is supreme anguish when he is forgotten.” Everything has been surrendered; only remembrance of the Lord remains. If it ceases even for a moment, the devotee becomes distraught, feeling life has been lost. Nothing else is to be done, gained, given, or received. The Lord's beautiful final instruction in the Gītā is, “Remain free from anxiety. Do not grieve.” How can sinners refrain from worry? He has already said he will free us from every sin because he first says, “Take refuge in me alone.” Enter his sole refuge, and all sin, anguish, burning, and delusion disappear forever. Arjuna therefore says, “My delusion is destroyed.” Once delusion is destroyed, everything is accomplished. Life thereafter follows the Lord; until then it follows enjoyment. In a pleasure-oriented life, every effort is impelled by and made for enjoyment. In a God-centered life, every effort is inspired by the Lord and made for his pleasure.
Our tradition says, “Desiring that, they practice brahmacarya.” The student entered the stage of brahmacarya from the desire to attain the Supreme Self.

Education is pursued for wealth because material means are necessary, but that wealth should lead one toward liberation. If it does, it is truly wealth; otherwise it is misfortune. In the present age we view everything economically. We ask what income our āśrama, school, or institution will produce and what we shall gain from it. We no longer act from the scriptural words “desiring that,” meaning for the attainment of the Lord, but ask only what financial advantage we shall receive. Religion that offers no economic gain has therefore become negligible to us. In our tradition, however, the true gain was the highest spiritual good. Every rite was directed toward it. Life began in the highest good and ended in it. A life turned toward the Lord thus becomes absorbed in him. When the Lord becomes life's goal and stands always before us, life becomes God-centered. Every effort is then inspired by him and seeks the fruit of his pleasure. A pleasure-centered life is precisely the opposite. Even in the temple it asks, “Lord, grant me wealth, a son, power, and fame.” Gosvāmī Tulasīdāsa says:
Abandoning the nectar of Hari's name, the fool obstinately begs to drink the poison of sense pleasure.
The fool repeatedly begs to drink poison. The Lord says, “I shall not give you poison, for you are dear to me,” but he insists, “No, Lord, it is sweet. Please give it to me.” Every action of a pleasure-centered person is prompted by enjoyment. This is the great difference between a pleasure-centered life and a life devoted to the Lord. When distaste for enjoyment arises, pleasures appear disagreeable, the mind withdraws from them and grows weary of them, and another person's pleasures no longer provoke craving, one should understand that life is turning toward God.
Once I went to the Kumbha. A friend of ours was a saintly man, sincere, sāttvika, and simple-hearted. I shall not give his name. One day he said, “Brother, something seems wrong. Perhaps the Lord's grace upon us is less.” I asked why. He replied, “Look. Great ministers and wealthy people visit their camp, large offerings are made there, and many sacrifices are being performed, while no one comes to us.”

He did not speak from ill will, but his words revealed a mental tendency: the heart begins to covet when it sees another person's enjoyments. When we lack such enjoyments, we take this as the Lord's displeasure and call ourselves unfortunate. This is plainly dependence upon enjoyment. To regard another person's possessions as proof of divine grace, and our lack of them as proof that grace has been withheld, shows that our highest valuation rests in that object. Possessing it makes us fortunate and lacking it makes us unfortunate, so we treat it as the supreme good and goal. With that same outlook we pray that the Lord will perform some task for us. After chanting the divine name, we say, “Lord, today I repeated your name a hundred thousand times. I offer those repetitions to you; in exchange, please give me this thing.”
Even a pleasure-centered person's spiritual practice becomes a servant of enjoyment. His worship too serves enjoyment. He says, “Lord, I am your devotee. See, I repeat your name and depend upon you alone. To whom else can I speak? My son is dying; please save him.” Such a prayer is neither evil nor sinful, but it is certainly foolish. The Lord offers his very self, yet one asks him merely to save a son. This shows a lack of discrimination. The son will die today or tomorrow, or perhaps we shall die first; separation from him is inevitable. What have we asked of God? Our pleasure-seeking intelligence wishes to employ even him in the service of enjoyment. Asking the Lord is better than committing sin or evil deeds, but it still shows ignorance of his greatness.
When we turn toward the Lord, enjoyments begin to appear distasteful. Once in Calcutta I spoke similarly before a gathering. Many extremely wealthy people met me privately, and every one said, “I am deeply unhappy.” Those without money imagine how happy the wealthy must be because they possess property, yet the causes of their sorrows are merely different. As long as attachment to enjoyment remains, sorrow will certainly remain. We must therefore turn toward the Lord.

When one becomes engaged in the Lord, his grace begins to destroy this delusion. I would say it vanishes at once; but even if that does not occur, one may know that the process has begun when distaste for enjoyments arises, they are judged inferior, happiness is no longer imagined within them, and material enjoyment is no longer regarded as evidence of grace. The mind then becomes eager to go toward the Lord. When this condition begins, one should understand that one has reached the right path of human life. One must advance, and the Lord will carry one forward. This is true.
There are two ways to destroy delusion. One is to perceive sorrow and the like in enjoyments and sense objects, withdraw the mind from them, and swim across the river of delusion. The other is to cast oneself at the Lord's feet and call him with his boat. One then boards in delight and crosses happily and without anxiety, gazing upon him, conversing with him, meeting him, and tasting his divine rasa. The river of delusion falls behind of itself.
