Questions and Answers concerning the Worship of Vraja-bhāva

Question: How can intense longing arise?

Answer: It is not the fruit of any meritorious deed. It is solely the fruit of Śrī Bhagavān's grace, and his limitless grace is pouring down ceaselessly at every moment. The more this life recognizes the power of that grace and experiences it, the more intense its longing to meet Śrī Bhagavān will become. The true means is to know Śrī Bhagavān's greatness and genuinely experience his grace. There are many subsidiary means.

Question: Do worldly duties also create obstacles?

Answer: Perform every action in the spirit of service to the Lord. It is not right to neglect the work itself.

Do not confine bhajana within narrow limits. Attachment will fall away when work is done in the spirit of service to the Lord. Attachment does not disappear through neglect or by abandoning one's work.

Question: How can possessive attachment be removed?

Answer: It is not to be removed. It is to be joined to the Lord. Change the object of possessiveness: “The Lord is mine, and I am yours alone. You take care of what belongs to you.” Both one's own lowliness and the Lord's grace are absolutely necessary.

Question: Our progress seems very slow to us.

Answer: One's progress should indeed appear slow to oneself. One should never become satisfied with it. Here it is dissatisfaction that impels one forward. This is not something one should merely tell oneself; one should genuinely see that one's pace is very slow.

Question: We can only move our hands and feet; the work will be accomplished only by his grace.

Answer: Then keep moving your hands and feet as much as you can. The one who must accomplish everything will himself do the rest. There should be no deficiency in your own effort. Your work is to increase the longing; he himself will fulfill it.

Question: Grace must help to increase the longing?

Answer: Certainly. Grace helps in every undertaking, but one must acknowledge it. The more you acknowledge grace, the more it will help you.

Question: Mental service feels like mere contemplation; it does not feel directly present.

Answer: Mental contemplation itself is meditation, and meditation itself is direct presence. If we mentally contemplate a cow, the cow is not actually here, so it remains only contemplation. This is not so in relation to the Lord. The Lord is already present here. Therefore, when one contemplates him inwardly and accepts that contemplation as direct presence, it is direct presence. One should not become despondent. By remaining free from despondency, one's progress will accelerate of itself.

Question: How can longing be kept alive?

Answer: Longing must remain. If it does not, that is not right.

Even in union, a sense of unfulfillment remains. See, the beloved abides beside the lover at every moment. The beloved is intensely eager for the lover, but does not let it be known. Just as the lover conceals love, the beloved remains near while concealing love, not for the lover's sake but to savor rasa personally. Even where you do not wish to place him, he remains near. The beloved's mind dwells upon the lover even more than the lover's mind dwells upon the beloved. The lover may be unable to remain close, but the beloved is not unable. He stays near eternally and without interruption. From time to time he grants a vision as vivid as direct sight and thereby makes the lover still more restless.

Question: How can one remain immersed in love?

Answer: Once immersed, you will not be able to come out again. Everything will have to be burned, and you will have to dance upon its funeral fire. Fear, temptation, and many other things will come. The gods will come to bestow honor and esteem. Rejecting them all, one must desire the beloved alone. One's family will cast one aside, the world will dishonor one, and worldly possessions will be taken away. Then even the beloved for whose sake all this was endured will push one away. If one's bhāva does not waver even then, the beloved will become one's captive. Śrī Kṛṣṇa left the gopīs and went to Mathurā. People called the gopīs “stained women.”

Question: Self-surrender sounds beautiful, but how can complete surrender arise?

Answer: Self-surrender is indeed the highest teaching, but it is both easy and difficult. It is easy because nothing needs to be done. It is difficult because every other reliance must be abandoned. True surrender is the surrender of one's trust.

Question: Before complete surrender, can there also be a quarter or a third of surrender?

Answer: Yes. For example, one may trust his power yet still think, “It would be good if things happened in this particular way.” That is incomplete surrender. In surrender, no separate desire remains. True surrender is not performed; it happens. Maintain complete readiness on your side, and then he accepts it of himself.

Question: Seeing people who had advanced in spiritual practice fall creates weakness in the mind.

Answer: There are three reasons why those who have truly advanced may fall away. First, some pride in their practice may arise. Second, an element of display may enter the practice. The Lord is not pleased by pride. If the practitioner had been sincerely engaged, even the fall becomes the preparation for rising again. Third, faith may diminish. Therefore, always look toward those who stand higher than you and continue praying to the Lord for protection.
