The Lord's Subjection to Love

A basic principle of belief in God is that He dwells within all beings. He is present even in the most hidden chamber of our mind, a place we ourselves often cannot reach, and continuously sees everything occurring there. We can never act secretly or conceal anything from Him. A true believer cannot commit a hidden sin, for he knows that the witness of his most private acts is already present. God knows every action of ours and of our mind, every movement of our mental tendencies, and every thought. Nothing can be kept hidden before Him. Wherever we wish to conceal something, our faith is deficient; indeed, at that point we do not truly acknowledge God. A believer constantly lives before the Lord and keeps the Lord before himself. This is genuine faith. God never disappears from the sight of one who lives this way. In the Gītā He says:

“One who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me is never lost to Me, nor am I ever lost to him.”

English translation

If genuine faith alone enters a person's life, all his affairs are accomplished. Prahlāda is its great exemplar. Many have believed in God, but his faith was extraordinary. In no circumstance did he imagine that the protecting Lord was absent. When Hiraṇyakaśipu cast him among enormous venomous serpents, Prahlāda thought, “The God within me is also within these snakes. How can their venom affect me?” This transcends ordinary experience, yet because of his faith he survived their bites. He remained alive after drinking poison, being cast into fire, and being attacked by a destructive spirit. Everywhere and always he saw his Lord present as protector.

At last Hiraṇyakaśipu seated Prahlāda upon his lap and asked, “Son, you speak so boldly. Are you not afraid? All the gods and the whole world tremble at my name, yet you show no fear. What strength do you possess?” Prahlāda quietly and simply replied, “Father, I am strong and speak through the same power that makes you strong, makes the whole world strong, and is the source of every strength.” Enraged, Hiraṇyakaśipu demanded, “Where is this God whose strength makes you so proud?” Prahlāda answered, “Where is He not? He is within you and me, outside and inside, in night, day, and twilight, in animals and birds, in the inert and conscious, in trees and mountains. He is everywhere at every time.”

His faith was incomparable. Hiraṇyakaśipu's rage intensified. He bound Prahlāda to a pillar and asked whether God was present there. With the simplicity of one who could see Him, Prahlāda fearlessly answered yes. Hiraṇyakaśipu struck the pillar with his fist. It split with a terrible sound that shook every direction and made the whole court tremble. From it emerged a fearsome form, half man and half lion, surrounded by hundreds of arms and with embers streaming from two fierce eyes. The assembly quailed before His wrathful face, and when the Lord appeared, the hostile demons fled.

Why did God emerge from the pillar? Since He is everywhere, He could have appeared from anywhere. The Bhāgavata explains:

“To make true the words spoken by His servant, and to demonstrate His own all-pervading presence within every being, He assumed a wondrous form never seen before and appeared in the assembly from the pillar, neither beast nor man.”

Prahlāda had declared that the Lord was also in the pillar. To demonstrate his servant's words as visibly true, God emerged from that very pillar. This reveals the greatness of Prahlāda's faith.

English translation

Prahlāda never once thought that God was absent, and therefore he never asked Him for anything. We worship God to end suffering or obtain some object. This is worship, but it is not true worship or true devotion. When the Lord told him to ask for a boon, Prahlāda replied, “Master, how can bargaining arise between master and servant, between You and me? How can You tell me to ask and receive? Can one who accepts payment truly be a servant?”

“O compassionate teacher of all, it could not be otherwise. One who hopes to receive blessings from You is not a servant but a merchant.”

Such a person conducts an exchange, giving one thing and receiving its price. A vaṇik is a trader, not a devotee. Prahlāda never thought of asking because his perfect faith knew that God is everywhere, within everyone and every action. Nothing exists or occurs apart from Him. In such a state, what could one ask from God?

That is perfect faith. Even before reaching it, a genuine believer stands before Him thinking, “Lord, what can I say? You already know my heart.” Yet God is forgiving and tender. He wishes to hear the devotee speak what lies within. There are two kinds of devotional heart: one filled with repentance and another with sweet rasa. These are two levels of devotion. A person whose life has been filled with deeds opposed to devotion, and whose memory of them now produces remorse, opens his mind before God and says, “Lord, this mind is filled with lust, anger, delusion, greed, pride, envy, and every fault and sin in the world. I have performed no act by which I could claim to be free of sin.” Desire is the root of sin; wherever desire remains in life, sin remains. Only action free from desire is sinless. Such a person admits, “Even if I have ever done something good, it too was driven by desire.”

Devotees say that bringing an object of enjoyment onto the supreme divine seat reserved for God in the heart is an insult to Him. Suppose an honored guest or revered devotee comes to our home and we prepare a seat, then place a sweeper's broom upon it. That would be a direct insult. In the same way, if we install a sensory object or enjoyment upon the seat of love reserved for God, we defile it and dishonor Him.

Language: Braj Bhāṣā

English translation

Devotees fear that no desire of any kind should arise in the heart upon God's seat. Even a longing for liberation would stain that throne:

“I do not long for liberation, nor do I desire worldly existence or splendor.”

Śaṅkarācārya says, “O Goddess, I desire neither liberation nor magnificence. You alone remain in the place that belongs to You.” Caitanya Mahāprabhu says:

“O Lord of the universe, I desire neither wealth, followers, beautiful women, nor exquisite poetry. May causeless devotion to You remain mine birth after birth.”

He does not ask that rebirth should cease, for that too is a desire. If a wish for personal pleasure or even liberation enters the place reserved for God, the devotee considers that impurity has arisen. Even liberation assumes that the ego is bound; if the ego were not bound, what would require release? Liberation always presupposes bondage. Wherever there remains a desire to free the mind from bondage, impurity remains. Devotees fear the arising of any desire, and regard desire for sensory objects as a grave offense and sin. If the slightest desire appears, they ask:

“Who is as crooked, wicked, and lustful as I? I forgot the very One who gave me this body. What an ungrateful traitor I am!”

Even a great soul like Sūradāsa says, “Lord, who else is as crooked, wicked, and lustful as I? I have forgotten You.” Forgetting God even briefly seems to such devotees like a dreadful sin. If remembrance of Him leaves the mind for a moment, they regard it as a great transgression. Their feeling is, “There has never been a condition in my life in which I was free of sin. Yet Lord, You dwell within and know every state of my mind. Do not look toward my evil deeds and nature. Look instead upon Your own gracious character and eternal renown, and deliver me.”

One heart is thus filled with repentance; the other is a devotee's heart filled with sweetness, where no desire of any kind awakens. If a longing does arise there, it is only to see God pleased. Such a heart does not pray for deliverance. It continually prays that sweet remembrance of Him may not leave the mind even for an instant. Remembrance may arise from fear, the wish to obtain something, curiosity, need, greed, or enmity. The highest remembrance, however, makes the mind taste sweetness and allows exceedingly sweet rasa to flow within it spontaneously. Such memory is filled with nectar. The prayer of the sweet heart is simply that this remembrance remain forever. This is a very exalted state, and where such a prayer exists, every perfection has already been attained.

English translation

We should therefore trust in the Lord's tender heart, friendship, causeless mercy, compassion, and kindness, and fearlessly reveal our sins before Him. We should say, “Lord, deliver us from all the sins committed until now, and take care that no desire for sin or evil ever arises in our minds in the future.” If our faith is genuine and we sincerely repent of our faults, God will accept every plea. It is natural for a compassionate person not to insist upon strict justice. God is both just and merciful. His mercy is filled with justice and His justice with mercy, so there is no injustice in His compassion.

God does nothing but show mercy. When a child cries before his mother, she forgets what wrong he has done or what harmful thing he has consumed. Seeing him weep, she takes him into her lap, consoles and strokes him, and tries to make him happy. We should trust God's mercy in the same way. Even if He disciplines us, His compassion fills the discipline. One person cuts another with a knife to cause pain; a doctor cuts with a knife to remove pain. Both cut, but God's punishment resembles the doctor's operation. It is given to restore health, never to enjoy another's suffering.

English translation

If a mother slaps her child, there is no hatred for him in her heart. She cannot even imagine becoming happy at his pain. In the same way, any discipline God gives is solely for our supreme welfare. In truth, the devotee believes that God does not even know how to inflict punishment. He is our parent, beloved relation, and Lord. Parents cannot bear their child's suffering, a husband cannot bear his wife's, and a friend cannot bear a friend's. How then could God punish us? Our suffering is His suffering. When lover and beloved are joined by affection, the pain of one naturally becomes the pain of the other. God cannot be pleased by seeing His loving devotee suffer. The lover therefore trusts that the Lord can never truly give pain, because doing so would mean suffering that pain Himself.

As king, Lord Rāma sent Sītā into exile; as her husband, however, the pain of her banishment remained His own. The Uttararāmacarita depicts this beautifully. Not King Rāma but Rāma, Sītā's husband, continually suffers her sorrow. By exiling her He exiled Himself. He did not cast her out as a stranger merely to demonstrate His own innocence. To send Sītā away was to send Himself away. Her pain was His. Thus God regards the devotee's sorrow, crisis, and anguish as His own.

Where there is enmity or hatred, one delights in an opponent's destruction and suffering. Where there is love, affection, and attachment, news of the beloved's death brings grief. If we suffer upon hearing that our child, sibling, spouse, or loved one has been hurt, how could we deliberately strike, kill, or pain them? The principle is that in affection the beloved's pain becomes the lover's own, while in hatred an enemy's pain becomes one's pleasure. God is no one's enemy. He dwells in the loving devotee's heart and keeps that devotee within His own. The devotee's sorrow melts Him. When Rāma wandered the forest searching for Sītā, He wept because she was weeping; her grief was reflected within Him. God is no one's enemy and is the very Self of His lover. He always keeps the lover within His heart and dwells within everyone.

In the Gītā the Lord says that He dwells equally in every being. No one is hateful or especially dear to Him. He is the same in all, yet those who worship Him with devotion are His and He is theirs. Where love and devotion exist, God abides in the lover and the lover in God:

“I am equal toward all beings. None is hateful or dear to Me. Yet those who worship Me with devotion dwell in Me, and I dwell in them.”

In the Śrīmad Bhāgavata the Lord says that saintly devotees are His heart and He is theirs, for they know no one apart from Him and He knows no one apart from them. They dwell in Him and He in them. Where such a relationship exists, how could God inflict punishment, sorrow, or pain? A person takes bitter medicine or allows a limb to be amputated to destroy disease. God's dealings with His devotee are similarly filled with love and contain no hatred. The devotee should never think that God seeks to punish him. Could tears in my eyes cause Him to laugh? If tears come to me, they will first come to Him. It would be extraordinary for me to weep while He continued laughing.

During the night battle, Ghaṭotkaca, Bhīmasena's son by the rākṣasī Hiḍimbā, fought so terribly that the entire Kaurava army was thrown into confusion. Karṇa possessed the divine missile given by Indra, powerful enough to kill Arjuna but usable only once. He had reserved it for Arjuna. That night, however, Ghaṭotkaca's assault terrified every Kaurava warrior. Duryodhana ordered Karṇa to release the missile and kill him immediately. Karṇa protested, “If I use it on Ghaṭotkaca, how shall I kill Arjuna?” Duryodhana replied, “If Ghaṭotkaca kills all of us tonight, what use will the missile be afterward? You and I will not survive this battle.” Forced by necessity, Karṇa released the weapon and its impact killed Ghaṭotkaca.

At his death grief filled the Pāṇḍava camp. The fighting ceased, and the Pāṇḍavas returned to their tents and wept in deep anguish. “Such a great hero, our son who terrified all the Kauravas, has died.” Yet Śrī Kṛṣṇa sat to one side laughing. The Pāṇḍavas were hurt that while they mourned, their own Kṛṣṇa smiled. Arjuna asked, “Lord, why this contrary behavior? Our own household has suffered such a great loss and Ghaṭotkaca is dead. At such a time one cannot laugh even merely out of sympathy. Why is there laughter upon Your face?”

The Lord explained, “I laugh for two reasons. Although Ghaṭotkaca was our son, he was a rākṣasa. Had Karṇa not killed him, I would eventually have done so, for his demonic nature would have brought suffering to the world. That is one cause of gladness. The second is that my heart rejoices because My Arjuna has been saved. If Karṇa had retained the missile, he would have released it upon Arjuna and My beloved Arjuna would have died.” The Lord went so far as to say, “I could not sleep at night or relish food by day simply because Karṇa possessed that weapon. Whenever I drove the chariot before him, I bewildered him through the art of enchantment so that he would forget to use it. Today it was released upon Ghaṭotkaca, and My Arjuna has been saved.” In this way the Lord revealed His love.

Seeing this heart of God, a beautiful way for us to obtain His grace is to lay every sin openly before the indwelling Lord. Once a person surrenders himself at God's feet, God becomes his and makes that person His own.
