The Unfailing Means
Surrender is a beautiful current of spiritual practice in which the aspirant practices in complete dependence. This is the very meaning of śaraṇāgati. One who entrusts himself to the Lord's hands and takes refuge in Him is granted freedom from every fear, for the Lord has vowed:
“This is My vow,” and, “To the one who takes refuge and petitions.”
Just as a traveler needs provisions for the road, every spiritual path requires virtuous conduct. Such conduct requires restraint, discipline, and the divine qualities; the forty-six virtues taught in the Bhāgavata are also necessary. A house cannot stand without a foundation, and the palace of spiritual practice cannot rise without the foundation of right conduct. The Upaniṣad says that those of bad conduct and uncollected mind do not attain knowledge of the Supreme Self. Right conduct is therefore indispensable.
Alongside it there is another extraordinary power that lays the foundation, raises the palace, and protects it: the grace of God. If one sincerely takes refuge in that grace, the Lord becomes the capability of the incapable and the strength of the weak. He readily brings an end to our weakness, incapacity, helplessness, and impure tendencies, and through His own strength completes all our work successfully. Our reliance upon His grace, however, must not be partial.

Consider a sick person who brings all his illnesses to an expert physician and says with candid faith, “I possess neither strength nor power. I even persist in harmful habits, but I have now entered your protection. Keep me under your care and treat me.” Hospitals have wards for patients. In the same way, at the lotus feet of God there is a vast ward where every sufferer from the disease of worldly existence may be treated. Only those who abandon every other refuge and truly wish to remain there receive a place. One must entrust oneself to God's hands, become dependent, and allow every claim to independent existence to end. The body is sick, the inner faculty impure, weaknesses remain, and the patient still follows an unhealthy regimen; yet when everything is surrendered, he becomes free from anxiety. He then has no opportunity to persist in harmful habits, for the nurses and attendants will not allow unhealthy things near him.
This ward has another remarkable feature. Before a patient is admitted, the doctor has no responsibility for him. Once admitted, however, the doctor removes the harmful habits and does not release him until the disease is cured. Giving oneself and being accepted do not happen twice. Once the offering has been received, God does not know how to abandon it. Yet an intense desire to become well is necessary. When the aspirant recognizes himself as powerless, weak, helpless, and possessing nothing, and seeks refuge in the almighty Lord, God grants him fearlessness.
Those who make a show in the name of love, knowledge, or devotion are not aspirants at all. They are hypocrites of bad conduct who work themselves into fervor only to fulfill low selfish ends. They are not under discussion here. We are speaking of genuine aspirants, who recognize their utter incapacity and enter the ward at the Lord's lotus feet. There are strong healers and vigilant guardians whose ordered care leaves no possibility of an unhealthy regimen, decline through bad company, or entry by corrupt tendencies. For harmful habits there is only one remedy: surrender.

Those who recognize their weakness and take shelter in Rāma's strength find that Rāma becomes their strength: “Rāma is the strength of the weak.” He is also the strength of the powerful, but the powerful person does not acknowledge Rāma's strength and relies upon pride instead. When a weak person recognizes God's strength, that divine strength protects him.
The Śrīmad Bhāgavata tells the famous story of Gajendra. He was the immensely powerful leader of a herd, surrounded by thousands of mighty elephants and cows. His prowess dominated the entire forest. One day he entered a lake to bathe and then began sporting in the water. A crocodile seized his foot. Intoxicated with power and pride, Gajendra thought, “What is this creature? I shall crush it beneath my foot.” He struggled fiercely to free himself, but the crocodile would not let go. The other elephants escaped the water and then tried to help. As the crocodile pulled him inward, Gajendra called to his companions. They formed a long chain, each grasping another's tail with its trunk, and pulled with all their strength. But the crocodile was far stronger in the water. Both elephant and crocodile had previously been cursed, and the crocodile's power was so great that all Gajendra's companions began to be dragged into the lake. Thinking that it was senseless for everyone to die after him, they released their hold.
The crocodile dragged Gajendra beneath the water. Only one more pull was needed to submerge him completely. His trunk alone remained above the surface, and with it he lifted a lotus. So long as he relied upon his own physical power and that of his companions, the Lord did not rescue him. Not the smallest task was accomplished. When Gajendra saw that no remedy, helper, listener, or rescuer remained, he called to Nārāyaṇa. He had pronounced only the first half of the word when God appeared. “At half the Name came Rāma, the strength of the weak.” The Lord came and saved the one who had taken refuge.

The same truth is illustrated by Draupadī:
“When Drupada's daughter became powerless that day, He left His own abode and came. Duḥśāsana's arms grew weary, for Śyāma became her garment.”
The wicked Duḥśāsana, whose arms possessed the strength of ten thousand elephants, seized Queen Draupadī by the hair and dragged her into the royal assembly. Cruel-hearted, he was intent upon stripping away her honor. No one would release her. She looked toward the Pāṇḍavas. Their heads were bowed and their weapons laid aside. They had wagered and lost before an assembly of thousands. Draupadī was horribly humiliated in the presence of her five immensely powerful husbands. Bhīṣma and Droṇa were seated there, but it was as though everyone had been stripped of selfhood and agency. Not one person protested. So monstrous a crime unfolded while all the experts in ethics and scripture, the heroes and mighty warriors, remained silent.
Duḥśāsana dragged her by the hair and sought to disrobe her. He pulled aside the cloth, exposed his thigh, and gestured for her to sit upon it. In this extremity Draupadī became utterly powerless and cried in helplessness, “Dweller in Dvārakā! Govinda! I am drowning in the ocean of the Kauravas. Come and save me!” Śyāma then became her garment. This was God's new incarnation as cloth. The Lord assumed the form of the menstruating woman's sari and granted fearlessness to the one who had taken refuge. Duḥśāsana's arms grew tired. “The strength of ten thousand elephants failed, but even ten yards of cloth did not diminish.” His physical strength was defeated, and he sat down exhausted, ashamed, and humiliated. Rāma had come as the strength of the weak.
“Personal strength, ascetic strength, and strength of arm, with wealth as the fourth, all these arise by the grace of youthful Sūra's Lord; when every strength is defeated, the divine Name remains.” Every kind of strength, personal power, austerity, physical might, and wealth, is obtained through Śyāmasundara's grace. The refuge and name of God are the practice of one who has no practice and the strength of one who has none. Draupadī called, and God came.

Likewise, when a person becomes terrified by his sins and corrupt nature and weeps to be freed from them, he should trust in the almighty Lord and His grace and fall at His feet. In whatever condition he finds himself, let him remain there and call with faith, “Lord, save me. No one else can rescue me.” Taking refuge in grace is such a mighty power that the strength of God and of His mercy joins itself wholly to that person's protection. Once God engages Himself in protecting someone, He makes the impossible happen. Who has ever heard of a person lifting a mountain upon his little finger, holding it steady for seven days, and sheltering thousands of beings beneath it without fear? This is Rāma as the strength of the weak.
Śyāmasundara was the sole strength of the people of Vraja. When the forest caught fire, the cowherd boys said, “Why be afraid? Kanhaiyā is with us. He will swallow it at once.” That is faith, without even a shadow of distrust. Where a shadow of distrust enters, the work is not accomplished; nor is it accomplished where one's own strength intrudes.
Faith in God's grace, together with a true recognition of one's own lowliness, is the supreme practice that completes every other practice by itself. In the Gītā the Lord proclaims, “With your mind fixed on Me, by My grace you shall cross every difficulty.” When His grace becomes active, there is not even a moment's delay. God's resolve and the fulfillment of that resolve occur simultaneously, not one after the other. The greatest practice is trust in God. Let us trust Him and become His alone. The Lord, friend of the humble and refuge of the shelterless, accomplishes everything by His grace and makes the impossible possible. No practice surpasses surrender and complete self-offering to God.

Pride is sweet poison. It devours every spiritual practice and is exceedingly destructive. The Bhāgavata says that even a person endowed with divine qualities will become proud if he does not take refuge in God: “I speak the truth, I behave rightly, I can restrain my senses, I can control my mind.” Pride in one's discipline causes immense trouble. Nārada once concluded that he had conquered desire and became proud. He went to Lord Śiva and said, “Master, by God's grace an event occurred in which this servant was victorious.” The wise Śiva warned him, “You should not speak of this or even bring it into your mind.” Nārada objected that he was merely reporting a true event. Śiva then said, “Nārada, do not tell Lord Viṣṇu.” Nārada thought, “Why should I not? Now I shall certainly tell Him,” and went directly to Vaikuṇṭha.
The Mother of the universe, Ramā, sat in the inner apartments. Nārada was so intimate with Viṣṇu that he could enter freely. When he arrived, Ramā rose and left. Nārada said, “Mother, why did you leave? My mind makes no distinction between man and woman.” He then related his victory to the Lord. God thought, “My devotee has contracted a disease.” Pride is the greatest disease, and the Lord resolved to cure Nārada. He gave him a monkey's face. Nārada became furious and even cursed God. Such pride in practice and knowledge greatly torments a person.
If one humbly trusts God's grace and lays one's lowliness before Him, what formal practice cannot accomplish happens effortlessly through His mercy. Taking shelter at the Lord's feet is the safest refuge, where every obstacle withdraws by itself. Restrain the senses just a little and accept His protection. Say, “Lord, this is beyond me. Now take care of what is Yours.” The moment we ask Him to take care of us, He comes and assumes possession. Once He has done so, who has the power to displace His authority and claim us again? Place and surrender yourself beneath His dominion.
There is a beautiful quality in God: He does not inspect our conduct. He looks to see whether the patient recognizes his illness and wishes to take the medicine. Once the patient admits his sickness and says, “Lord, You alone must treat me,” the Lord is already waiting with His medicine chest.

English translation
His boat stands ready to carry us across the ocean of worldly existence. It never rests even briefly; it has sailed without interruption from beginningless time and will continue forever. He stands ready for anyone who wishes to board, calling, “Come, brother, I shall take you across. Come, whoever you are and whatever your condition.” His proclamation is, “I shall swiftly deliver you from the ocean of worldly existence.” In the Gītā the Lord says:
“For those whose minds have entered into Me, O Pārtha, I soon become the deliverer from the ocean of the mortal world.”
Those who have fixed their minds upon Him, entrusted themselves to Him, and become dependent upon Him may not yet have crossed, but if they wish to cross, He will certainly carry them. They need only sit in His boat. Nacirāt means without delay, in the time it takes to snap one's fingers. From what does He carry them? From this ocean of death. Board the boat once in any way at all. There will be no need to swim, move your hands and feet, bail water, or pull an oar. There will be no fear of creatures in the water or of losing your breath. You will reach the farther shore without delay.
Thus the Lord is forever ready to accept us without condition, without examining anything about us, and without considering our past history. Day and night His court remains open to those who seek refuge. Let anyone call, at any time and from any place, and He is ready to come there and then, accepting the caller just as he is. This is the highest practice and the straight, easy path. Only faith is required to walk it.
As soon as faith in God arises, faith in enjoyment departs. When reliance upon enjoyment leaves, all confidence in sensory pleasure disappears. Misconduct and evil then cease to remain. Just as sunlight immediately consumes darkness, trust in God permits no trust in enjoyment to remain. Once that trust in enjoyment is removed from life, all faults and misconduct born from the desire for pleasure end of themselves.
The greatest spiritual practice is faith in God, and the aspirant's greatest virtue is freedom from pride. With a humble heart take refuge in the refuge of the shelterless, and your life will be blessed.
