Waves of Gopī Love
The nature of love is indescribable. Speech cannot define it and intellect cannot measure it. The Nārada Bhakti Sūtra says, “The essential nature of love cannot be expressed.” Love belongs solely to the mind and is experienced through the mind, yet the one who experiences it forgets himself. In His message to Sītā, Lord Rāma described this love:
“Beloved, My mind alone knows the truth of the love between you and Me. Yet that mind always remains with you. Understand that the whole essence of our love lies in this.”
Gosvāmījī has explained the nature of love beautifully in very few words. The lover's mind knows love, yet that mind remains continually beside the beloved and has become the beloved's own. Here Lord Rāma is the lover and Goddess Sītā the beloved. In the realm of love the usual order becomes reversed. Love is inward and belongs to the mind; it is not a thing of speech or outward display. Nārada says that although it is inward, it occasionally manifests in a worthy vessel.

English translation
When the ocean of love floods, the rasa of affection overflows and becomes visible in a particular state. Otherwise love is not something that leaps noisily upon the surface. It is so deep that even reaching its depths is exceedingly difficult:
“Only after first sinking to the bottomless depth does one sometimes find the stainless jewel of love. Elsewhere that ocean bears the fruit of death, and elsewhere only disgrace.”
Love of God and the love of the gopīs require the surrender of everything. Immersed in the ocean of love, Caitanya Mahāprabhu told Śyāmasundara, “Lord, embrace me or cast me down with a kick. Do whatever pleases You. Yet Lord of my life, I have no one but You.”
Those who follow gopī-bhāva will not abandon the Lord's service even to accept liberation offered by Him. God Himself says, “My people do not accept liberation when it is offered without service to Me.” Service means the beloved's preference, whatever brings pleasure to the beloved. Loving devotees desire only that their beloved Lord, the life and delight of their hearts, remain happy. Beyond this there is no happiness, gain, attainment, desire, possessiveness, or longing. This is love in its pure form and its pure path. It is pure attachment ripened into anurāga, called bhāva.
When attachment matures into anurāga, bhāva arises. With its appearance, attachment to one's pride, social order, caste, fame, this world, and the next disappears. This is complete renunciation. Such a lover is never agitated and wishes only to see the beloved's smiling face in every circumstance. Even the pain of hell would be supremely desirable if it brought a smile to that face.
Desire and love may sometimes look alike, but seeking something from another is desire, while giving oneself to make another happy is love. Love knows how to give; desire knows how to take. Desire bargains, while love sacrifices. Love rests upon renunciation; desire rests upon a contract: “I give you this and you must give me that in return.” A lover never imagines that the beloved should give him anything. His sole longing is that the beloved become happy through him. The beloved becomes so grateful for this disposition that, wishing to delight the lover, he shapes his own mind according to the lover's feeling.

English translation
“Seeing those autumn nights filled with blossoming jasmine, the Lord too made up His mind to sport, taking refuge in Yogamāyā.”
What are rāsa and divine dalliance? They are the distribution of Śyāmasundara's own essential bliss. The great teachers of the Gauḍīya tradition have written beautiful commentaries upon the five chapters of the rāsa. Even Parīkṣit becomes doubtful and asks a question, yet nothing impure occurs there. It is the exquisitely sweet play in which the Lord distributes His own divine consciousness and bliss, while He Himself is both enjoyer and enjoyed. There is no base desire. It is divine desire voluntarily accepted by Him:
“Pure being, consciousness, and bliss, eternally desireless and established in His supreme glory, He joyfully accepts desire within His mind solely for my happiness. Free by nature from lust and attachment, without possessiveness and eternally unchanging, for my sake He accepts me in the form of His beloved Priyā. Gods, sages, and the whole world are enchanted by each of His qualities, yet as love itself He remains forever innocently enchanted by me. Countless gods of desire are eternally sacrificed before every limb of His body, yet He gazes upon my beauty and can find no rest. Never hungry or thirsty even for an instant and always fulfilled, He remains ever unsatisfied for the purest particle of the offering of my rasa. Filled with the rasa of love, the form and connoisseur of rasa, an ocean of divine love, He forever drinks the nectar of love and stands embodied as divine love itself.”
Where are delusion, lust, anger, or greed in this? The wonder of love's realm is that the lover desires nothing for himself. Even if liberation came, worshiped his feet, and begged to be accepted, he would reply, “I have no need of you. I want only to serve my beloved.”
The Lord Himself says that His people do not accept even liberation apart from His service. Their minds contain no agitation, unrest, or wish to obtain anything, nor have they anything left to give. When nothing of their own remains, what could they offer? So long as we retain anything to give, something called ours, our pride, feeling, cherished possession, or private self, we have not given ourselves completely. Without complete giving, we have not become complete servants.

English translation
What does Rādhā mean? Love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa alone. What does gopī mean? The desire solely for Kṛṣṇa's happiness. One whose life has this character is a gopī and is Rādhā. Little outward change is needed. Transform only the feelings of the innermost self, and the waves of bhāva that arise will be extraordinary. The ocean waves of Rādhā's mahābhāva are unfathomable, limitless, and infinite. Even Her loving displeasure is never for Herself, never caused by wounded pride, and never intended to demand worship, flattery, or punishment. That wonderful māna exists to make the beloved laugh and give Him happiness. To fulfill the lovers' desire, the beloved too wishes that they worship Him and charm Him through playful irritation. There is a beautiful feeling in pleasing through feigned annoyance.
Such extraordinary bhāva continually surges as waves upon this ocean of love. Rādhā is sometimes the offended beloved, sometimes the worshiped One, and sometimes the worshiper. Rādhā as worshiper is readily understood: She worships and adores the Lord. Rādhā as the One worshiped is much harder to comprehend. God worships Her, bows at Her feet, places flowers upon them, and begs, “Place Your generous lotus foot upon Me.” To conventional moralists this appears difficult and scandalous, for it truly lies beyond their understanding:
“Abandoning family and the path of the honorable, which are so difficult to relinquish, they attained Mukunda's path, sought even by the Vedas.”
A story is told of Dvārakā. Whenever Rādhikā and the gopīs were mentioned, Kṛṣṇa's body thrilled, tears flowed, His voice faltered, and He could not speak. Seeing this, the chief queens wondered what deficiency existed in them and what exceptional quality existed in those women. Kṛṣṇa was the sovereign of kings and possessed every comfort. What could have existed in Vraja that was absent here?
The all-powerful Lord can become anything. He comes even as death. He does not become sick or die, yet He can assume the forms of sickness and death. He therefore became illness and developed a pain in His stomach. Physicians brought medicines, but He did not recover. Asked whether an earlier remedy had helped, He replied, “I know the medicine, but its necessary accompaniment is unavailable. If one of My lovers gives the dust of his or her feet, I can take the medicine with that dust.”

Rukmiṇī and Satyabhāmā sat nearby. Both thought, “We have dust upon our feet and we are His lovers, but scripture teaches that one must never give the dust of one's feet to one's husband and Lord. It would bring sin and residence in hell.” Satyabhāmā asked Rukmiṇī to give it. Rukmiṇī replied, “I would, sister, but I fear the sin and hell that may follow.” All sixteen thousand queens refused. If none of them would become liable for the sin, what other resident or believer in Dvārakā would give it? Every person answered no.
Nārada arrived and asked what illusion the Lord had devised through this stomach pain. God replied, “It hurts greatly. Find a remedy and bring the foot dust of one of My lovers.” Nārada thought that he possessed such dust, but Rukmiṇī's love was greater than his. If she had not given hers, how could he give his? He too declined. Śyāmasundara then sent him to Vraja. Nārada doubted that what could not be found in the entire universe would be found there, but the Lord told him to go.
Playing his vīṇā and singing God's auspicious names, Nārada reached Vraja. Hearing the sweet song, the women, men, and children gathered. The gopīs surrounded him and eagerly asked whether their Lord was well and happy. Nārada fell silent and made a troubled face. Alarmed, they pressed him to explain. He said that Śyāmasundara's stomach hurt and no medicine had helped. When they asked for a remedy, Nārada explained that the Lord Himself had prescribed the dust from a lover's feet.
“Śyāmasundara used to say that the gopīs were His great lovers.” They asked, “Does He truly regard us as His lovers?” When Nārada said yes, every gopī extended her feet. “Take the dust. Take and bind up as much as you wish!” Nārada warned that giving foot dust to God violated scripture and would condemn them to hell. The gopīs replied, “We do not know Him as God. He is the Lord of our lives. If His pain can be healed, what greater gain could we have than to remain in hell forever? We will stay there throughout eternity without ever complaining that He sent us. Take the dust and go quickly so that His pain may cease.”

Nārada was astonished. “Until now I merely pretended to be a lover! Uddhava rightly prayed to become a vine, shrub, or tree so that he might receive this foot dust. I have obtained it directly, offered by the gopīs themselves. I am blessed.” He anointed his whole head with the dust, tied the rest in a bundle, placed it upon his head, and returned dancing and singing to the palace at Dvārakā. When Kṛṣṇa asked where he had found it, Nārada answered that the gopīs had given it. The Lord asked whether he had warned them of the terrible sin. Nārada replied, “I warned them, but those madwomen would not listen. They said, ‘Śyāmasundara already killed our Aghāsura, so what agha, sin, can remain with us? If there is any sin, we will suffer it and go to hell. Take the dust and quickly heal the Lord of our lives.’”
God placed the gopīs' foot dust upon His head. His stomach had never truly been ill. Rukmiṇī and Satyabhāmā stood speechless with wonder. Respecting their dignity, Kṛṣṇa said, “Rukmiṇī, My stomach is well now. Do not worry. These gopīs are mad, yet sometimes their madness proves useful. You have seen it.” He had shown them why tears came to His eyes at the gopīs' names.
There is no hesitation in the realm of love. Hesitation arises where we desire something for ourselves. The lover desires nothing, and no self-seeking mind remains within him. Rādhā-bhāva is an extraordinary disposition of renunciation. We must be ready to relinquish everything. Pride, wealth, heaven, this world, the next world, and honor will all depart. Everything will be cast into the fire:
“Kabīra stands in the marketplace with a burning brand in hand. Whoever burns down his own house may come with me.”
One who wishes to burn the house of possessiveness may come, and his fetters will be cut:
“So long as people are not Yours, O Kṛṣṇa, attachments and aversions remain thieves, the home remains a prison, and delusion remains an iron shackle upon the feet.”
Until a person becomes God's, the thieves of attachment and aversion pursue him and iron fetters remain upon his feet. Once he belongs to God he is released from prison, the chains fall away, and the thieves that plundered his life withdraw. Yet to become His, one must cease belonging to all others.
We have become slaves of desire, anger, greed, pride, fame, reputation, enjoyment, house, and property. Every such bondage must be abandoned. One who can offer everything into the fire and dance upon its ashes may enter the path of love:
“The path of love is a mighty flame; the one who retreats turns back. The one who enters it tastes the supreme rasa, while the mere spectator is scorched.”
This is the culmination of the feeling arising between lover and beloved. This great rasa, divine bliss, Rādhā-bhāva, and gopī-bhāva can be established only upon the ground of total renunciation.
