पुण्यश्लोक भाईजी श्रीहनुमानप्रसादजी पोद्दार कविता करनेके लिये कविता नहीं करते थे। समय-समयपर उनके हृदयसे उद्गार प्रस्फुटित होते थे। उन्होंने कभी अपने नामसे उन कविताओंको छपाया भी नहीं। वे इधर-उधर स्फुटरूपसे बिखरी पड़ी थीं। उनके परलोक-गमनके पश्चात् गीताप्रेसके संचालकोंने यह बड़ा ही श्लाघनीय कार्य किया है कि उनकी इधर-उधर बिखरी समस्त कविताओंका संग्रह 'पद-रत्नाकर' के नामसे प्रकाशित कर दिया है। भाईजीकी कविताएँ क्या हैं? उनके हृदयोद्गार हैं; उनमें उनकी अन्तरात्माकी झलक दिखायी देती है। 'पद-रत्नाकर' के प्रत्येक पद रत्नके सदृश हैं; वे पठनीय, स्मरणीय, श्रवणीय तथा मनन करनेयोग्य हैं। प्रायः विविध विषयोंपर उन्होंने पद लिखे हैं। प्रत्येक घरमें यह ग्रन्थरत्न रखनेयोग्य है।

पूज्यवाद सद्गत भाईजी श्रीहनुमानप्रसादजी पोद्दार प्रभुके धामसे आये थे। अनेक जीवोंका जीवन सुधारनेके लिये श्रीकृष्ण-लीला-चिन्तन-रूप 'पद-रत्नाकर' प्रभुकी प्रेरणासे भगवद्भाव-भावित अन्तःकरणसे निकली हुई उनकी दिव्य वाणी अमृतरूप है। मैंने उसका अध्ययन किया और अपार आनन्दका अनुभव किया। उसी प्रकार साधक लोग 'पद-रत्नाकर' का चिन्तन, पठन, मनन करके दिव्य आनन्दका अनुभव करेंगे, ऐसी श्रद्धा है।

The blessed Bhaiji, Sri Hanuman Prasad Poddar, did not compose poetry merely for the sake of making poems. From time to time utterances burst forth from his heart. He never even published those poems under his own name; they lay scattered here and there as individual pieces. After his departure from this world, the directors of Gita Press performed the highly commendable work of gathering all those scattered poems and publishing them under the title Pada-ratnakara. What are Bhaiji’s poems? They are outpourings of his heart, in which a glimpse of his inmost self can be seen. Every pad in Pada-ratnakara is like a jewel. They deserve to be read, remembered, heard and contemplated. He wrote pads on many different subjects. This jewel of a book deserves a place in every home.

The venerable departed Bhaiji, Sri Hanuman Prasad Poddar, came from the Lord’s abode. Intended to reform the lives of many beings, Pada-ratnakara, in the form of contemplation of Sri Krishna’s lila, is his divine, nectar-like speech. Inspired by the Lord, it issued from a heart imbued with divine feeling. I studied it and experienced immeasurable joy. I have faith that practitioners likewise will experience divine joy by contemplating, reading and reflecting upon Pada-ratnakara.

परमश्रद्धेय भाईजीकी स्मरणीय पद-रत्नावली एक अनोखी रचना है। इस ग्रन्थके पाठ साधकोंके लिये त्याग, वैराग्य, ज्ञान और भक्तिके समन्वय-साधनके लिये लोकोत्तर आदर्श हैं। इसीमें दास्यभाव, विनय, प्रार्थना, शरणागतिके मार्गमें स्वाभाविक भावसे समाकृष्ट करनेके सिद्ध मन्त्र पाये जाते हैं।

परमश्रद्धेय श्रीयुत भाईजीका जीवन प्रारम्भसे ही साधनामय था। कार्य करते-करते उन्हें समाधि लग जाया करती थी, जो घण्टों बनी रहती थी। 'पद-रत्नाकर' ऐसे ही अधिकारी पुरुषके सरस हृदयका छलकता हुआ अवदान है। इस ग्रन्थके 'श्रीराधा-माधव-स्वरूप-माधुरी' एवं 'श्रीराधा-माधव-लीला-माधुरी' ये दो प्रकरण अद्भुत अनुभूतियोंसे भरे हैं। इनका वर्णन तो वही कर सकता है, जिसे भगवान्की दिव्य लीलामें प्रवेश प्राप्त हो। पुस्तकका कण-कण व्रजरसके आस्वादसे भरपूर है। इस कराल कालमें इस पुस्तकका प्रसार मिटती मानवताके लिये संजीवनीका काम कर सकता है।

The memorable garland of pad-jewels composed by the most revered Bhaiji is a unique work. For practitioners, the readings in this book are transcendent ideals for the integrated cultivation of renunciation, detachment, knowledge and devotion. Within it are found perfected formulas that naturally draw the heart toward the paths of servitude, humility, prayer and surrender.

From the beginning, the life of the most revered Bhaiji was filled with spiritual practice. While working, he would enter samadhi that continued for hours. Pada-ratnakara is the overflowing gift of the rasa-filled heart of such a qualified person. Its two sections, “The Sweetness of Sri Radha-Madhava’s Form” and “The Sweetness of Sri Radha-Madhava’s Lila,” are filled with wondrous experiences. Only one who has gained entrance into the Lord’s divine lila can describe them. Every particle of the book is replete with the savor of Vraja-rasa. In this dreadful age, dissemination of this book can serve as a life-restoring herb for vanishing humanity.

I could not have imagined that, possessing equal command of three languages, Bhaiji could create literature of such lofty feeling. Pada-ratnakara bears witness to the fully sensitive expression of an eminent devotee-poet. I have read the works of poets from Hindi literature’s devotional period, critically discussed and analyzed them, and conducted some research. On the basis of my limited knowledge, I can say that Bhaiji’s pad literature is in no way inferior to the poets of that class.

It is universally known how greatly the lifelong literary discipline of the most revered Bhaiji, Sri Hanuman Prasad Poddar, benefited the beings of this world. Few people, however, know that his discipline in the field of poetry was also so extensive. I had previously savored some of revered Bhaiji’s poetic works, but only through this volume, Pada-ratnakara, did I learn that he had composed poetry on such a vast scale. The singing and recitation of these works can bring a divine atmosphere into being. It is impossible to state in words the joy I received from them. I have accepted this book as the grace-bestowal of Sri Bhaiji’s literary spiritual practice.
