(Raga Pilu - Tintal)

Ghansyama, the treasure of my life, eternally dwells within my heart, the abode of my supreme happiness. Forever new, beautiful and enchanting, He is eternal supreme bliss. Forever fresh, He freely performs His sweetest lila. Nothing else remains within my heart, whether of this world or the next. All worldly dualities have dissolved, and fear and grief have departed. He has become my very nature, and the Lord's radiance has blossomed. There is eternal, absolute and supreme happiness, and everlasting peace.

[1121]

(Raga Todi - Tala Kaharva)

Mohana does not leave me even for a moment; He remains forever with me. There is no distinction of place or time, and immeasurable joy rises every moment. At home or in the forest, outside or within, amid much work or none, while sleeping or waking, eating or drinking, Syama remains forever beside me. Every desire for enjoyment has disappeared, as has the delusion of liberation. That one graceful Natavara alone remains, eternally and ceaselessly, without separation. Neither this world nor the next retains any meaning anywhere. At all times and everywhere, He Himself dances as the pure supreme purpose. Senses, mind and understanding have all become profoundly blessed by taking Syama's form. No second being or object remains; Syama alone remains, exclusive and one.

[1122]

(Raga Pilu - Tintal)

Since Syama came to reign within my heart, it has become a lovely temple of rasa, supremely sacred and splendid. Worldly attachment, desire, possessiveness, delusion, honor, pride and anger, greed, hypocrisy, fear, grief, envy, rivalry, violence and fault cannot gain entry into this temple even for an instant. As no darkness remains when the sun rises, not a trace of them survives. All the companions and stimulating elements of lila have manifested. The ocean of rasa has surged beyond its shores, and a stream of rasa's nectar flows. The conscious, rasa-filled rasa play of the Beloved and His beloved has begun. Every sakhi, absorbed in the joy of service, feels immense delight within her heart. Brilliant light and absolute bliss have spread in every direction. Ever-new and incomparable lila-rasa manifests purely and freely.

[1123]

(Raga Pilu - Tala Kaharva)

Radha-Madhava dwell eternally and beautifully within my heart. My mouth continually dances with Their ever-new and sweet Names. The heart, free from desire for personal happiness, continually drinks the divine and sublime nectar of the rasa of Radha-Madhava's love.

[1124]

(Raga Paraj - Tala Kaharva)

My Bhagavan alone speaks through me. Through me He begins the sweet melody of His own flute. Now He alone has any place within my life. Therefore every action in me, small or great, is forever His alone.

[1125]

(Raga Shivaranjani - Tala Kaharva)

Beloved Syama does not move away for even a moment or abandon me. Sleeping or waking, eating or drinking, He remains beautifully near at all times. He continually reveals His supremely sacred lila, the abode of happiness. Outside and within, in body and mind, He ceaselessly gives joy.

[1126]

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharva)

The Lord has fulfilled me; the covering is removed and the entanglement cut. Nandalala appears unveiled, playing His sweet, rasa-filled flute. Forever and everywhere, within all, Syama performs many delightful lilas. He plays ceaselessly within Himself, a splendid smile filling His lips. He assumes many costumes and ornaments, accompanied by companions suited to each. Songs arise in thunder; He sometimes establishes kingdoms and sometimes dissolves them. Eternally the form of rasa and crown jewel of rasikas, He is the one Reality and no other. The enchanting dark and fair Couple pours streams of rasa everywhere. Beyond all, all that is, and sovereign of all, the One reigns by becoming two. Beholding Mahabhava and the King of Rasa, I am fulfilled and every task has ended.

[1127]

(Ghazal melody - Tala Kaharva)

I am my Husband's true wedded beloved, though bereft of worldly good fortune. I hunger for belonging, not for ceremonious respect. He considers me His own and remembers me forever. Therefore He does not fear to give me sorrow. My Beloved torments me openly and wholeheartedly. Knowing I am forever His, He does not hesitate to speak so.

[1127, continued]

If giving me sorrow brings Him even slight happiness, that is my good fortune and my supreme joy. I never desire from Him happiness for my own senses. Therefore every one of His actions brings happiness. He forever possesses full authority over His own property. He may strike, reject or torment me, for He is my Husband. He treats me according to His own mind and deprives me of enjoyment. This itself is intimacy, and in this lies my honor.

[1128]

(Raga Kafi - Tala Kaharva)

An exceedingly sweet and extraordinary play unfolds within. How can that soundless and unmarked play appear outside? Who could describe those experiences, and to whom? One cannot leave that ever-new rasa for even a moment. When one tries to come outside, that lila restrains her. That beautiful and noble Lady delights only within. Renouncing that lila is exceedingly difficult, indeed impossible. Therefore nothing outward can become possible. The lovely, measureless lila continues forever, fresh and new. Why speak only of Kusuma-sarovara? There are countless lakes, groves and forests. The sweet, enchanting and nectarean lila occurs forever. The inward faculty is awake within it and sleeps toward the external world. Mind, senses, every limb and intellect are absorbed in it alone. Therefore every operation of outward understanding has dissolved.

[1129]

(Raga Sohani - Tala Dadra)

He is the foundation of every object, and every object is His form. Nothing exists anywhere apart from Him, and He fulfills all. He Himself remains equally present within all and is wholly untouched. He performs varied and unequal lilas, yet no taint adheres to Him. He is eternally beyond qualities and possessed of qualities, without form yet forever embodied. He appears filled with every change and yet is entirely changeless. He pervades all, is all, transcends all and possesses distinctive attributes. He is forever without distinctions, the possessor of all parts and Himself the remainder. He is eternally threaded through all and fills everyone completely, yet remains distinct from all, forever alone and distant from everyone. His one pure and eternal form is being, consciousness and bliss. He is unmoving, forever immutable, composed solely of knowledge and utterly free. Opposing attributes forever dwell together within Him. His supreme divinity shelters everyone by holding all together. He is the divine ocean filled with honeyed rasa, peaceful and profoundly deep. Yet He forever rises as waves and surges beyond His shore. Those immeasurable, towering and tender waves are His own form. He is accessible to all and readily contemplated, yet eternally inconceivable in nature. Leaping and dancing, He is the bliss within bliss. He is Brahman, eternal Dharma and the foundation of happiness itself. He instantly revives the deadened minds of sages and paramahamsas, giving supreme bliss by making them drink the honey-rasa of His qualities and form. He naturally steals the minds of perfected sages and beautiful women alike. Bound by the bonds of love, He Himself can never escape.

That same Natavara forever dances, Ghansyama, the treasury of beauty, upon each of whose limbs millions of Cupids are forever offered. All these are things I have heard, but what is He actually? Whoever saw Him, they say, became lost; who then could explain Him? I know nothing: where He is, what He is like or who He is. Yet my mind remains forever absorbed in Him, while intellect falls silent before Him. I do not know why or how I worship Him, yet I cannot forget Him; the mind simply refuses. Whatever He may be and however He may be, He alone concerns me. He alone is my Beloved and the delight of my vital breath. This is knowledge of the Unknown and a stainless acquaintance with the Unfamiliar. This love for One I do not know is profound, exceedingly radiant and pure. Whether the Beloved appears now or never becomes directly visible, my entire being has already been surrendered without condition. Every other relationship has dissolved; the one Beloved alone remains. Becoming a heavenly river of rasa's nectar, the "I" has flowed into the ocean of rasa.

[1130]

(Raga Des - Tintal)

He remains in my mind day and night and forever accompanies the body. How could I look toward another or fold my hands before anyone else? He continually performs fresh lila and never gives me leisure. How could I think of anything else or keep another near? Day and night He converses and devises ever-new games. How could I speak to another or maintain another association? He dwells forever and freely in body, mind and speech. He alone is my wealth, my people and my one joy.

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharva)

You alone are the joy of my understanding and path, of my mind and body. You alone are the treasure of my life and the inhalation and exhalation of my living. Bhagavan, You alone are the resting place of all my possessive love. You alone are the one sublime object of my attachment to happiness. You alone are my supreme desire and my one delightful reality: father, mother, son, friend and relative, teacher and master, strength, learning and abode of happiness.

[1132]

(Raga Sohani - Tala Dadra)

The one who has settled within His heart and become dear to Him has had every inauspicious thing erased and become distinct from all. Whatever slight shadow of sorrow or adversity appears within him is the pure, sweet maya of the Beloved's extraordinary love. Removing impure maya, it continually makes him stainless. Divinizing everything in every way, it fills all with conscious, sweet rasa. He becomes the exclusive servant of Sri Syama, treasure of his life. All the hidden gods and goddesses offer him homage. Not the slightest imagining of cause and effect for anxiety remains. There is not the least talk of disease, despair or fear. The love-lila of the treasure of love unfolds within Himself alone. All darkness and insentience transform into radiant divinity. There is no anxiety, no fear and not a particle of despair anywhere. Sweet Radha-Ramana plays freely within His own home.

That sweet remembrance is never forgotten. Within remembrance itself comes an incomparable and ever-new relish. The Beloved's delightful virtues remain forever in my contemplation. The moonlike face, treasury of beauty, is eternally established in my heart. The mind remains ever joyful, finding the nearness of the mine of happiness. Not even a moment's obstruction of separation ever arises. We remain forever united and forever converse in rasa. All the world's sins disappear, and every anguish is extinguished.

[1134]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharva)

Day and night pass in contemplating the sorrow born from not meeting the Beloved. The Beloved's enchanting form and those sweet feelings never leave the mind. Without even realizing it, I forever behold the images within Your mind. Throughout all eight watches I dwell there, observing the pure, honeyed feelings as they arise. Within eternal union, this sacred, love-filled experience of nonunion is the supremely sweet, ideal, extraordinary and stainless glory of love's kingdom. I alone experience the sorrow and happiness it produces. I cannot pass even a single instant without You. Whether this body remains far or near, whether it remains or does not remain, separation will never occur, and indeed cannot occur. Your unwavering, immovable relationship is this flawless and priceless love. The One eternally becomes two, each selling the self for the price of the other's happiness.

Sometimes we weep as the terrible flame of separation burns fiercely in the heart. Sometimes in union we laugh and at once become garlands around one another's necks. You Yourself become sweet union and embrace Yourself. Only an outward frame remains separate to behold this supreme bliss.

Limitless universes fill every pore of Your innermost being. Yet You remain Nanda's son and the beloved of the gopis, O supreme Reality.

(Doha; Raga Pilu - Tala Kaharva)

You alone are everything and everything is You, yet You are my Master, the flute bearer crowned with a peacock feather who remains forever beside me.

[1139]

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharva)

Mohana remains forever near and never becomes separate. Whenever you wish, meet Him to your heart's content; that Beloved longs to meet. In every condition and place, continually through all eight watches, meet Him whenever you wish and let every false distance in the mind dissolve.

May I forever behold Syama and Ghansyama forever behold me. May I dwell forever within Him, and may He, the abode of happiness, dwell within me. Not the slightest imagination of separateness remains. Eternal union is blissful, without even a trace of the conjunction called separation.

[1141]

(Raga Mand - Tala Kaharva)

Erase all thought and discrimination concerning waking, dream and deep sleep. May the one Beloved, honeyed and sweet, pervade them all. May we play beyond convention, fearless and free from doubt. Embracing me again and again, may He give supernatural love. May mind and senses receive a fresh touch at every moment. Immersed in the divine ocean of happiness, may the heart fill with fresh joy. There is no difference, modesty, hesitation, fear, despair, pride or honor. Within the oneness of embrace, no awareness of two remains. Eternally one, forever becoming two, They create the colors of lila, graceful, supernatural, transcendent and beautiful, breaking the limits of scripture. In reality there is no difference between the relisher and the relished. Therefore imagined fault produces no sorrow. The relish is eternally sweetest, forever full of rasa and ever new. Naturally fulfilled yet unfulfilled, They continually receive supreme delight. This is the pure way of rasa that gives joy to the Blissful One. Turning one away from enjoyment and liberation, it grants sacred love.

(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharva)

Lord of my life, what a wonder: You have transformed the pupils of my eyes. Lord of my heart, now You appear to me everywhere within everyone. Not only human beings, but gods and demons, animals and birds, insects and moths, water, earth, fire, wind and sky are all limbs of Your one sacred body. Trees and vines, mountain peaks, streams and rivers, directions, sun, moon and stars: Beloved, life of my life, You forever appear to me everywhere. The wind touched by all and the dust of everyone's feet are stainless and supremely sacred, always worthy of honor and pure service, forever enchanting my mind.

[1143]

(Raga Paraj - Tala Kaharva)

The mind knows what is within the mind, though feelings forever remain unmanifest. Within mind, mind's form lies eternally open, with no division or concealment. The mind forever remains near the One who possesses exclusive authority over it. Who could think, explain how, or tell what transaction occurs there? The One to whom an object necessarily belongs preserves His own possession. Speaking, hearing and thinking about it are forever useless. He does and causes everything according to His own will. All my other actions and thoughts are futile.

[1144]

(Raga Bhimpalasi - Tala Kaharva)

Since You came and pervaded my heart, assuming full authority over it, every fear and delusion has fled, and honor, pride and ego have died. Desire for sensual happiness has disappeared, and every contrary comfort of the senses has dried away. Every sin and fault has been destroyed, and the painful cravings have burned to ash.

An ever-growing, beautiful and conscious cluster of splendid vines has spread. This inner being has become Syama and Syama's generous, solitary grove.

[1145]

(Raga Todi - Tala Kaharva)

Your sweet love, purest beauty and conscious bliss have spread throughout my entire being and filled it completely and freely. Becoming one river with a threefold form, it has grown without shore or end. It rushed onward, flooding me, and I helplessly moved toward You. Completely permeated, I retain no independent existence anywhere. There is only Your consciousness, power and radiance; presence and absence alike are Yours. There is infinite bliss, love without limit and boundless beauty, all founded in complete knowledge, supreme peace and perfect sweetness. This has become fully manifested light, Your sacred abode embodied. Within You it has become a wondrous and splendid form of Your own lila.

This intellect is no longer useful; abandon hope in it. If you keep such hope, you will meet continual disappointment. The worldly intellect has burned and roasted until it became ash. No ground for thoughts of enjoyment remains within it now. It cannot think even slightly about what should or should not be done. It naturally remains indifferent, enduring everything. What must happen occurs only through His action. It has no concern with living or dying. It is no longer acquainted with any duality. Whatever may happen, it now remains forever fearless. One in essence and imperishable, there is only You. Pervading all, only You. As reality, the entire world is Your expansion. The whole world is imagined by maya and rests upon Your intention. Creator and creation alike are only You. Pervading all, only You. Apart from You not even the slightest second thing exists in the world. Like a thread woven through its own beads, like water within its waves, You alone fill everything, only You. Pervading all, only You. You are mother, father and sustainer, the Om known through the Vedas, the supremely purifying Grandfather, friend and giver of refuge. You create, preserve and dissolve. Pervading all, only You. You are the perishable, imperishable and immutable; nature and spirit are Your forms. Beyond maya, the incomparable, formless Purusottama praised by the Vedas, You are filled with form and are every form. Pervading all, only You. Break the dream of delusion and recognize Your own nature. Know Yourself within Yourself as eternal, real, blissful and concentrated awareness. You alone are forever the form of bliss. Pervading all, only You.

[1162]

(Raga Pahari - Tala Kaharva)

Only You fill this entire universe. Within You and me is "You"; I am "You," and You are only You. You are in the sky and in water, earth, wind and fire. You are in thunder, lightning and torrential rain. You are in the unfathomable ocean and the river's current. You are in the moon's coolness and the sun's radiance. You are in the dense forest and enchanting flower garden. You are in the bee absorbed in the rasa of a blossoming flower.

Ignorant, I do not know through whom, how or when my true welfare can occur, but Bhagavan knows it perfectly. Endowed with every power, knower of all and great Lord of every world, He is my natural friend, and whatever ordinance He makes for me is certainly auspicious and contains every form of welfare. What benefit comes, when and through cold, heat, rain or drought? He knows every mystery of sickness and health, death and life. Therefore whenever He does anything, He acts with full attention. Within it lies everyone's welfare and the supreme, ultimate and auspicious upliftment. Thus I remain fearless, contemplating the Lord's compassion.

All possessiveness toward the moving and unmoving world has departed, and all worldly pride dissolved. No person or thing remains "mine," and even the "I" can no longer be found. In every way, my one relationship is with Him alone. Every formidable fortress has fallen and every false bond broken. I now retain no connection with any happiness or sorrow. No doubt of any kind remains, and every argument has ended. Without Him I am nothing anywhere, utterly equal to emptiness. But He eternally reigns within me, Lord of all and treasury of strength and wisdom. Bad qualities, evil thoughts and sorrow can never trouble me, for the Lord keeps me forever under His vigilant protection. The omnipotent Lord continually gives me His own sublime virtues and strength, yet keeps me modest and humble so that pride cannot arise. Forever liberated while living, I selflessly receive the Lord's qualities, and at His indication they are then given to the world. The Lord Himself performs and causes this entire exchange. I have become merely the instrument; He is the free and wise Player.

He has fashioned one frame from Himself for His own work. All its mechanical parts move regularly, and the whole activity appears to occur. Enjoyment and renunciation, possessiveness and freedom from it, unskillful and skillful action: the playful Lord Himself performs lila according to His own will. No doer, doing or object worthy of action survives. Self and other have vanished and become one; every selfish end and supreme purpose is undivided.

[1181]

(Raga Bhimpalasi - Tala Kaharva)

God's mind remains forever entered within mine and performs its work. Only the splendid divine intentions of God's mind arise. Nothing remains in my mind apart from God's mind. Therefore it remains forever honeyed and bathed in divine rasa. The Lord continually keeps my mind as an instrument of His own mind. Through it the supremely free Enchanter acts according to His pleasure. No one remains within me to form pure or impure judgments. Every inner conflict has disappeared, as have all distortions of delusion. Losing itself within the Lord's mind, my mind has become no-mind. The entire camp of unreal hope, thirst and possessiveness has departed. Now the Beloved plays within it and through it according to His will. Within and through it He continually wanders in complete freedom.

(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharva)

I am the exceedingly dear child of my beloved God. God is my protector, nourisher and true guardian. I desire only that He keep me as His own instrument, becoming the Player and forever directing me through His own system. Even in unbearable and terrible circumstances, I remain fearless and carefree. Manifesting infinite compassion, He forever keeps me safe. How insignificant, trivial and fallen I am, and how transcendent is the Lord Bhagavan. Yet the Supreme Lord cares for me with limitless affection and sublime grace. Today I have become blessed by attaining rare refuge at His feet. Supremely sacred and exclusive love for His lotus feet has arisen within my mind.

[1183]

(Raga Todi - Tala Kaharva)

Whatever I may be, my Lord remains forever near me. That Lord is the infinite embodiment of love and infinite abode of affection. He naturally feels limitless and extraordinary belonging toward me. He watches me ceaselessly and preserves pure possessive affection for me. Lust, anger, greed, fear, anxiety, delusion, honor, pride, grief and despair were all uprooted when the gracious gift of the Lord's mercy began to rain. I remain forever fearless, seeing His sacred lotus hand upon my head. That enchanting Lord forever rains affection upon me.

His absolute bliss has filled my life. Sorrow and all its causes have disappeared, as have every terrible duality. His complete and absolute love has now awakened within me. Possessive delusion and desirous attachment toward this world and the next have vanished. The Lord's natural fearlessness has spread, and the ghost of false fear has fled. Fearless and beyond dispute, free from doubt, I have become certainly pure. His supremely sacred forgiveness has arisen within me. Anger has been uprooted, and now no one feels afraid of me. [1186]

(Raga Vagesri - Tala Kaharva)

I belong to the Lord and He is my Lord; this is our eternal relationship. Knowing it, every worldly bond has been severed. Intellect, vital breath, mind and senses are all He; Bhagavan is both enjoyed and enjoyer. He equally pervades the limitless, manifold and wondrous conscious and inert objects. The Lord's all-formed nature has accepted me too. The curtain of delusion and possessiveness has torn, and every false ego dissolved.

[1198]

(Raga Paraj - Tala Kaharva)

Because I continually render fitting service and remain forever near the Lord, those divine qualities and thoughts have naturally come to dwell within my mind. Thus lust and resentment, greed and pride, fear, anxiety, despair and ego, envy, malice, hostility and violence retain not the slightest place. Possessive affection remains for the Lord alone, and the "I" rests freely at His feet. Equality, peace and supreme bliss spread eternally and without interruption.

The sun rises, night arrives, and the wheel of time turns ceaselessly. Every being performs good and bad actions according to individual taste. But the inward faculty does not turn toward time, action or the doer. It remains forever intoxicated and absorbed in relishing the one rasa. Sleeping or waking, every action occurs naturally under nature's influence, yet through all eight watches something wholly other and extraordinary dwells within the mind. It cannot be removed even for a moment and cannot be lost in any way. Immutable, it continually gives the supreme happiness of utterly pure and eternal sorrow.

Every difference of mine and another has vanished; the Lord is recognized within all. A mighty current of love flows toward every living being. The Lord is within all, all are the Lord, and everything is the expansion of lila. Lila and the playful Lord forever perform sweet recreation.

[1201]

(Raga Pilu - Tala Kaharva)

Every worldly possessiveness has been completely and forever removed. It has gone and attached itself to the sacred powder of the Lord's lotus-foot dust. The dust of the Lord's lotus feet alone is now my possession. What possessiveness could remain when being itself has dissolved and everything else has become unreal? Only I and my supreme Beloved remain beautifully. Delusion has disappeared, maya has died, and enchanting love remains.

[1202]

(Raga Todi - Tala Kaharva)

We belong to Him and He forever belongs to us, the ocean of supreme bliss's nectar. That supremely sweet divine lover forever keeps us within His heart. He dwells continually within our hearts and personally performs manifold play. Whatever may occur in the world and however, His union with us remains. He continually gives us His naturally limitless and generous bliss. No shadow of despair can ever arise in any way. No conjunction with sorrow-producing enjoyments remains within life. Not the slightest place or time remains devoid of divine rasa.

Life has become successful and the bliss of detachment has arisen. Attachment to all has vanished, and every love now rests in detachment. Fear has withdrawn, every grief fled and life became carefree. Let worldly happiness and sorrow, honor, people and wealth come or go. The curtain of delusion has torn and every wall of possessiveness fallen. The sun of knowledge has fully risen and the darkness of ignorance died. The Lord's one eternal being alone remains everywhere within all. Everything is His manifestation and the glory of His lila. That one conscious being fills water, earth and fire, wind and sky. The abode of lila plays within life and death, happiness and sorrow. Attachment to enjoyment has ended, and incomparable love for Him has become complete, shining equally within every unequal lila.

[1204]

(Raga Mand - Tintal)

I am no one's servant and no one is my servant. I am Rama's eternal servant; this is my one support and faith. Nothing anywhere remains as my separate task. Body, mind and intellect are entirely absorbed in the Lord's service. Whatever service occurs contains nothing of mine. The Lord holds and moves the strings to act as He pleases. Inspiration, understanding, strength and agency, the doer and cause of doing: everything is within Him, belongs to Him and is transacted with Him alone. Not a trace of "I-ness" remains; one feeling alone has arisen. Elation, grief, fear, honor and pride have all disappeared.

Every duality has fallen away and the burden of affliction withdrawn. It has also become a destroyer of other people's sorrow and conflict.

(In the style of Lavani - Tala Kaharva)

Every moment of my days and nights passes in His service. Mind, intelligence and senses are absorbed, and no other thought now enters the mind. When even worthy works such as repetition, austerity, service and worship have fallen away, how could delusion, anger, greed, pride and desire accomplish anything further?

[1227]

(Raga Bhimpalasi - Tintal)

Whether I am traveling or dwelling anywhere, at home or in the forest, I do not remain alone, for the Lord is always beside me. The Lord is my whole, and I am His eternal and everlasting part. The Lord can never remain separate from me anywhere: this is certain truth. This body and its circumstances may change, and even this world may change, but the Lord's true light, eternally spread everywhere, does not change. He continually watches over me and eternally bears my attainment and preservation. At every step I experience the Lord's blessed, sacred love.

[1228]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharva)

The deep curtain of delusion has lifted, and every confusion and weariness of mind has vanished. That dreadful and boundless unrest imagined by the mind no longer torments me. Even amid immense activity, a pleasing peace abides, for I behold Syama's radiant face everywhere. Through this, ultimate bliss has now come and filled my life. Those whose minds are dull and absorbed in the craving for enjoyment cannot behold it.

Assuming diverse costumes, You play by Yourself within Yourself. You are beginningless and endless; only You are, O Beloved. Established in the glory of Your essential being, You dwell within the world yet remain beyond it.

At times You become a terrible storm; at times a harsh thunderbolt or snowfall. At times You become a cool, pleasant breeze; at times the sweet splendor of spring. O Bhagavan, You fill every particle of the universe; You are the Great One everywhere. Therefore separation never occurs, and union forever remains. You continually appear beside me, O Lord, hiding and smiling sweetly. Dispelling the whole world's entanglement, You have filled me with blessed joy. Beloved, You cannot hide, whatever disguise You assume. Now I have come to recognize You. Until now I sought You in temples and mosques, but I could not behold that beloved sweetness. I searched exactly as each person instructed me. I wandered, yet nowhere did You appear, O consciousness embodied, enchanter of the heart. Whoever approached me merely bewildered me terribly, describing You again and again and striking me with words. Unable to behold You, I wondered within my mind whether Your being existed anywhere in the world at all. Whenever such doubt arose, You flashed a sudden glimpse. Smiling from the corner of Your eye, O playful Lord, You immediately hid again. Lightning seemed to race through me, and my body thrilled with a rushing sound. All the senses became intensely radiant. Then I beheld light spread through everything, O Lord of my life, Your divine and joy-bestowing light alone.

Then a storm of wealth, fame and sensual beauty would arise, and its darkening gloom would cover all the light. In this way You repeatedly came and went, for I had not yet attained the blessed recognition of You. Seated within the eyes, You behold everyone. Seated within the ears, You hear every pleasing sound. Through the nose You receive fragrance, and through the tongue You taste. You alone touch as the sense of touch, performing wondrous lila. Within the vital airs, heart and mind, intelligence, ego and body, You spread through all and play, O divine Player. You have learned an astonishing art of veiling Yourself. Entering within everyone, You hide in wondrous intimacy. The one to whom You reveal Yourself by lifting Your curtain beholds that unique form and color that intoxicate with love. Such a person never forgets again and indeed cannot forget, for recognition between You both becomes eternal and mutual. No storm ever rises again, nor are the eyes dazzled. Having attained that divine sight, the person remains forever happy. Within happiness and sorrow, victory and defeat, darkness and radiance, fame and disgrace, that person beholds Your enchanting beauty in them all. Then the whole universe is seen as filled with You, and one's own tiny being is no longer seen as separate. You pervade all, and that person is immersed in You. In that single moment, every fear, division and weariness disappears.

The farther I withdraw, the farther You advance. Hidden behind the curtains, You reveal Your enchanting face. But blind as I am, I do not see what lies behind them. Bewildered by delusion, I merely gaze at the worthless, many-colored curtains. From behind them You laugh Your beloved and sweet laughter. To draw my heart, You immediately play Your sweet flute. I hear it, become enchanted and long to behold You, yet unable to see, I wander here and there with a dull mind. In manifold ways You draw my attention and offer many kinds of signs. I remain startled and alert, yet foolish and unaware, understand nothing. Even then You do not grow weary; You lift the curtain slightly and, addressing me softly, call me near. When even then I fail to see, You roar like a lion. Body, mind and life-breath tremble, and no composure remains. Terrified, I flee; then You reassure and instruct me. The farther I withdraw, the farther You advance.

My supremely beloved foundation of life! As my relationships with relatives fell away, I grew despairing and afraid. But helpless and compelled, I immediately entered a new home. Everything seemed ancient yet eternally new, and I found a sense of "mine" in all. The former life was forgotten, and I embraced only the new. A strong, beautiful and well-formed body; the unbroken affection of father and mother; my beloved's sweet words and gentle smile; the delightful growth of innocent children: all continually spread happiness, my supremely beloved foundation of life!

Countless ages passed in wandering through manifold bodies, tiny and vast. What extraordinary conduct is this, my supremely beloved foundation of life?

(3)

Childhood, youth and old age all run their full course. After death, the turn of rebirth continually arrives. Maya's wheel keeps revolving and can never stop, yet the single feeling of "I, I" never leaves me. Whatever the disguise may be, the same intoxicant has entered every well. Therefore I go on singing this refrain of "I, I" and can never abandon it. Who is this "I," and what is its form, my supremely beloved foundation of life?

(4)

Crying "I, I," I wander and suffer the blows of the ocean of becoming, yet I do not know who this "I" is or how it speaks. If the body alone were "I," how could the "I" remain in every body? If "I" were mind and senses, how could I call them mine? Hidden, it hears every word and witnesses every blow and counterblow. Now I have come to recognize it: that alone is I, and I have understood the distinction. You, my Friend, are merging into that very One, my supremely beloved foundation of life!

(5)

I understood that there is no distinction whatever between this "I" and You. There is no interruption within the all-pervasiveness of this vast "I."

Made a connoisseur through His rasa alone, the tongue has gone mad with love. Every taste of the sense-objects has become tasteless and can no longer impose its will. His eyes forever behold His supremely beautiful form. His ears forever hear His own melodious voice. His body continually touches Him with surging passion. Mind and life-breath overflow, and the whole universe appears filled with Him. Forgetting everything, my heart wonders, "Where is He? Who is He, the thief of my mind?" I shall search in the fathomless depths of the heart's waters, if only I can find their shore. When He reveals His own life-breath within mine, both banks are submerged and nothing whatever remains visible. He alone is the mother and father of us all, our brother, relative, son and spouse. He is everyone's all-in-all; the whole universe is simply filled with Him. He is our companion in life and our supreme treasure. We sit within the inmost heart to gain one brief vision of Him. When He raises both arms and calls us toward Himself, the mind abandons every pleasure and runs after Him alone. Forgetting everything, we rise and dance, leaving both laughter and weeping behind. Carrying a broken, worn-out boat, we run toward the shore of His feet. Pouring every hope at the soles of that Beloved's ruddy feet, we shall leap in, whether we drown or cross to the farther shore. Let every happiness in this world remain with Him. At the mere touch of those ruddy feet, every hope of ours disappeared. No desire for any object remains; all wanting and gaining have ended. We now sit upon the shore of becoming, trusting in His pair of feet. No desire for bondage or liberation can trouble us now. His face itself is an ever-new bond, while liberation streams from His feet.

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharva)

Taking away the entire world with ease, You rendered me without substance or essence. I could grasp nothing and became helpless; not one modification of nature remained. You alone remained, the one without a second; no other seen or seer survived. This realization was not produced by another; through Yourself, You alone know Yourself as blessed. Neither senses nor their enjoyments remained, and every disease of ignorance disappeared. Those who behold conjunctions born of nature cannot understand this mystery. The enjoyed and enjoyer became one, and discrimination between liberation and bondage vanished. The entire many became one; who now could support whom? Nothing of honor or disgrace remained, and life and death became equal. No knowledge of friend or enemy survived; no name or trace of distinction remained. Immutable, You eternally perform honey-filled recreation within Yourself alone. Personally becoming both formless and formed, free of desire, You act according to desire. Absorbed in samadhi without intention, there is no dusk, night or dawn. There is no limit or shore anywhere; everything remains as though inert. At times You hold honey-filled dialogue and carry away every affliction. There is no scale and no measure; You remain eternally free within Yourself. These are Your absorptions into and emergences from samadhi, beautiful creation and dreadful dissolution. Every form You fashion is unsurpassed, incomparable and eternally equal. At times You become separate experience; at times You reveal diverse feelings. Yet You do not allow sorrow for even a moment and are never divided Yourself. No ego or possessiveness remains anywhere; Your shadow is natural equality. You alone are the "I," You alone are possessiveness, You alone know reality and You alone are the Supreme Reality.

Every sorrow and happiness, joy and despair; honor and disgrace, grief and delight; immortality and death, knowledge and ignorance; dreadful hell and supreme welfare: You alone, O Bhagavan, fill them all, and they all sing Your lila. The distinctions of the seen, the seer and seeing are all within You, while You remain forever undivided. Therefore I am eternally peaceful and joyful, for You dwell freely within the heart. Your sweet form appears forever, everywhere, sacred and incomparable. Every possessive delusion has vanished, and masses of conscious bliss pervade all. The darkness of intention has been destroyed, and light fills every direction.

I no longer possess any authority over any being or object. Nor does anyone anywhere possess the slightest authority over me. Action, inaction and wrong action have all vanished; nothing remains anywhere. In the absence of an enjoyer, no course or destination of results remains. Every intention has dissolved and found its end in You alone. No awareness remains of who acts, where, how or what is done. Everything simply happens and appears to happen, while You, the one Perfect Being, fill all. No pride or discrimination remains even concerning my thinking or speaking. Every life and death has vanished, and this world and the next have both disappeared. The conception of place and time has ended, and not the slightest joy or grief remains. There is no intoxication, no intelligence, no emptiness and no light. You alone, perfectly complete, pervade all, leaving not the slightest space anywhere.

Come, all of you together, and attack; I call this aloud to everyone. Freely wield every one of your weapons against me. Yet these weapons cannot inflict the slightest wound upon me. The moment they touch me, all will be destroyed and fall rolling upon the earth. For no relationship between the world and me remains anywhere. Every ancient bond of ignorance within nature's kingdom has broken and fallen. Let this body remain or depart this very moment; let wealth come or disappear entirely. Let honor or fame be received, or useless disgrace and infamy. Anxiety, fear, despair, pride and honor cannot touch me. Bhagavan alone, established in His essential being, dwells outside and within.

At times she torments one with grief for a son and inflicts dreadful sorrow. At times, giving infamy and disgrace, she takes away every honor. At times she takes all the world's lovely pleasures and makes the mind destitute. At times, exhausting one upon the path, she behaves harshly and adversely. Then in a moment she removes dreadful sorrow, poverty and lowliness. At every moment and in every direction she continually performs her work. Giving medicine both bitter and sweet, she removes the heart's pain. Yet she never readily reveals her identity. Flashing suddenly like restless lightning, she covers the edge of one's vision. Until the face of this veiled Lady is seen, the living being remains agitated in many ways and suffers distress. On the day she removes the covering and reveals her divine splendor, she introduces herself, makes her identity known and cools the heart. From that day onward, every object appears filled completely by her, from whom a ceaseless rain of samsara-destroying nectar falls.

A midnight filled with dreadful darkness, an impenetrable and unrestrained tempest; the sky filled with the immense roar of dense clouds and rent by terrible lightning; the ocean's breast agitated in towering waves, earth and mountains wounded, their bodies trembling; the unhindered fire of dissolution's flames, while the three worlds suffer terrified blows: what a dreadful guise! The world trembles, and no one remains unafraid except the one who has recognized the Beloved within it. Blessed Disguised One, I have recognized the One who hides. Vast and extreme poverty, torment from disease, unbearable humiliation; abandoned by relatives, mocked by the world, body exhausted, mind bewildered, pain unconquerable; the corpse of one's only child lying before one, exceedingly lovely and dear as life; unceasing cries of grief, peace and happiness gone, swept into the river of sorrow beyond description: not the faintest dream of happiness, only cruel and terrifying anguish. Seeing the veiled face, the one who has recognized the Beloved within it declares: Blessed Disguised One, I have recognized the One who hides. A body without food, a person near death, a naked body for want of clothing; a helpless woman without support, ceaseless contempt, fault-finding and suspicion.

Bereft of relatives, utterly poor and dispossessed, facing a hostile world without affection; crushed, fallen, degraded and expelled from country, caste, wealth, people, children and home; left entirely alone, naked and reduced to dry bones: the one who beholds this fierce form and recognizes the Beloved within it declares, Blessed Disguised One, I have recognized the One who hides.

[1254]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Dhumali)

Seeing You assume the guise of sorrow, I shall not fear You, O Lord. Wherever sorrow is, I shall behold You there and seize You firmly. O Lord, hide Your face even within the deepest darkness if You wish. I shall recognize You in one corner and throughout the whole universe. Disease and grief, loss of wealth, sorrow, terrible humiliation and exceedingly cruel anguish: You are within them all, all are within You, or all are merely Your disguises. When nothing exists apart from You, why then should I be afraid? If You arrive adorned as death, I shall clasp Your feet and die in joy. Grant Your vision, whatever guise of sorrow You assume, O Lord. Wherever sorrow is, I shall behold You there and seize You firmly.

[1255]

(Raga Todi - Tala Kaharva)

O Death, you have come in terrifying form bearing the sweet message of my beloved Lord. Break completely every false possessiveness that binds me to maya. You have allowed not the slightest trace of false ego to remain anywhere and immediately set me upon the path that leads to my Beloved's realm. Destroying every afflicted torment of birth and death and every fear of the future, you made me immortal and gave me the eternal right to dwell at the Lord's feet. O death, giver of liberation and love for the Lord's feet, form of supreme happiness, fulfill my life by drawing me into your stainless and incomparable power.

Graciously accept the welcoming offering of my grateful heart. Again and again I worship you with the pure and fragrant flowers of my mind.

× × × ×

I was mistaken and failed to recognize You beneath the guise of death, O Lord. You Yourself assumed the form of dreadful death and came to give me a Protector. The playful Lord's lila is exceedingly wondrous, and no one has found its limit. Through Your own grace, You Yourself give me the boundless, sweet nectar of Your form to drink. Breaking the covering and tearing apart maya's curtain, You drew me into a deep embrace and made me forever nondifferent from You.

(Raga Sohani - Tala Dadra)

Bhagavan fills me, bearing eternal divinity. Bhagavan fills me, bearing everlasting being. Bhagavan fills me, bearing consciousness made of pure spirit. Bhagavan fills me, bearing pure and imperishable knowledge. Therefore I am forever utterly free of grief and fear. Therefore I am forever abundantly endowed with natural happiness. Therefore I am forever deeply peaceful and free of delusion. Therefore I am forever perfectly complete, tender and radiant.
