Longing
[1051]
(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharva)
Sri Krishna, Nanda's son, is the one foundation of every form. He alone is the foundation of every rasa and every happiness. Contemplating Him is blissful, and the auspicious sight of Him is blissful. The touch of His limbs is supremely blissful; everything about Him is captivating. As the very Self, that Beloved is eternally united with my body and mind. He alone enters experience at every moment and reveals His pure, incomparable splendor. May that beloved Lord, filled with the joy of rasa and beauty, pervade me within and without. May my inner being forever laugh, weep and dance in love for Him.
[1052]
(Raga Asavari)
May I cherish one longing in my mind: to behold forever the graceful divine lover beneath Vamsivata on the bank of the Kalindi. Hearing His enchanting flute melody again and again, may I forget all awareness of the body. Beholding the flashing beauty of each limb every moment, may I offer my thrilled body and mind. May I delight Syama, sing His virtues, and place a garland of gunja berries around His neck. In supreme bliss, forgetting the whole world, may I call only, "Syama! Syama!"
[1053]
(Raga Asavari - Tintal)
Embracing silence, may my tongue ceaselessly repeat "Sri Radha-Syama." May my eyes see nothing else, but always behold Radha-Syama. Renouncing every other sound through my ears, may I hear only Radha-Syama forever. Removing every worldly projection from the mind, may I remain absorbed in beholding Radha-Syama.

May every desire for enjoyment and liberation disappear; may I desire Radha-Syama alone. May Radha-Syama alone seem my one supremely beloved treasure. Whether I receive a high or low birth, may Radha-Syama remain forever with me. Sri Radha-Syama is supremely sweet, the unequalled and stainless treasury of beauty's nectar.
[1054]
(Raga Bhupali - Tintal)
Radha's Name alone is my support. Some behold their own nature as the supreme Brahman, formless and immutable. Some identify themselves with the impartial Self, the foundation of all. Some, established as the witness, see the world as a false modification in a dream. Some forever behold within the heart the divine light, the supreme Reality embodied. Some awaken kundalini, pass beyond the six cakras, and reach the summit above the thousand-petaled lotus, the essence of yogic perfection. Some hear the unstruck melody day and night and attend to the unspoken mantra. Some yogis are devoted to desireless action, while others continually discriminate. Some hold in the heart the name and form of the Lord of Lakshmi, others the Lord of Girija. Some reverently serve Rama or Krishna, wish-fulfilling trees for devotees. But I am dull-minded, exceedingly foolish, obstinate, mischievous and utterly rustic. I ceaselessly repeat "Radhe! Radhe!" knowing it to be the essence of every essence.
[1055]
(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharva)
May my ears hear Syama's flute and my eyes behold His splendid form. May my nose breathe the pure fragrance of His limbs and my skin touch His lovely body. May my tongue taste His exceedingly sweet prasada and my speech forever sing His virtues. May the sweet mine of rasa dwell in my mind throughout all eight watches. Through unbroken, incomparable companionship with Him, may mind and senses become fulfilled. Receiving the touch of Brahman as sweet rasa, may love increase without end for limitless time.

[1057]
(Raga Vagesri - Tala Kaharva)
Their love resembles radiant pure gold refined a million times. Their eternal mutual fidelity is like that of the moon and cakora bird, the cloud and cataka bird. The two are abodes of supreme bliss, the incomparable Mahabhava and King of Rasa, an infinite ocean of pure beauty, the eternal conscious embodiment of sweetness. May I behold the divine, sweet image of Radha-Madhava everywhere. Apart from love for the dust of Their feet, may I never desire anything else. May I hear nothing else anywhere and utter nothing else with my mouth. May my mind remain forever exclusively absorbed in Radha-Syama's Names and virtues. May love for the dust of the Divine Couple's feet increase beautifully every moment. May I receive some small task in Their service. Abandoning attachment, hatred, desire and possessiveness, may I preserve inner purity. Following the sakhis and manjaris, may I discipline mind, senses and intellect. May I always perform whatever service comes to me as the manjari's grace. May I forever regard my life as blessed and keep my mind filled with pure delight.
[1058]
(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharva)
I desire neither universal sovereignty nor heaven. I desire neither the stations of Brahma and Indra nor final emancipation. I desire neither yogic powers nor a station in the netherworld. I desire none of the four kinds of liberation, not even the exalted and rare salokya and its companions.

[1059]
(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharva)
Beloved, in Your great love You have naturally given me every facility. You freely gave senses and sense objects, indeed everything, in many forms. Seeing a genuine need, You keep giving more and more, whether I ask or do not ask, without considering my disposition. Even if I reject You or insult You every day, You care for this unworthy child like a loving mother, without pride. Therefore I desire no circumstance or object of the world, whether small or great. Lord, may supreme reverence and unwavering trust in You continually increase. May not the slightest trace of desire for my own happiness remain in the mind. May pure love for Your feet increase especially, growing at every moment. May complete surrender become natural and perfect, leaving no possessiveness or pride. May I remain an instrument of Your ceaseless lila, O playful Lord.

May no desire arise in the mind apart from Your happiness alone. May every movement of my being compete purely to bring You joy.

Beloved, forever fill me with the disposition of serving Your lotus feet, so that pure, exclusive eagerness for service continually increases. Beloved, give me only the rare possessive love that claims Your feet as its own, so that attachment and hatred disappear from the world and equality arises. May I welcome both with a smile and all my heart, attaining supreme, incomparable joy. May I never forget, Beloved, that You alone fill everyone in wondrous ways. Filled with lila, You reveal Your play by becoming a terrible enemy or a pure friend. Whatever exists is only You, and whatever occurs is the dance of Your lila. Whether terribly frightening or supremely sweet, You perform the lila of weeping and laughter. May I always see You everywhere, filled with being, consciousness and bliss, utterly free. Then may I welcome everyone forever, my deeply humble mind filled with joy.

One may feel supremely delighted on seeing his honor increase in the world, and, seeing himself surrounded by crowds, may imagine his splendor has grown. He may regard his trailing admirers as an army behind him and, intoxicated with delight, display pride in his superiority. Then he is mistaken, for there is nothing in this worthy of honor. The world's noise has no value; this is known throughout the world. Yet if someone's honor grows beyond all measure and this gives him boundless happiness until his body thrills, may he always receive immeasurable joy and may his honor forever increase. May millions upon millions esteem him; Lord, ordain it so. May I feel limitless delight on seeing his bright, unwithered face. This is my humble prayer to the Lord; may the true Lord fulfill it.

I do not wish any being to be dishonored even for a moment, for my own beloved Lord dwells forever within all. I always wish to bring them happiness and preserve their honor, yet I cannot always behave toward everyone in the same way. No one is at fault, and my intention too is blameless. But I am powerless and find myself a treasury of weakness. For this reason I keep making mistakes, both slight and serious, and because of them my loved one becomes justly angry with me. Then there is the one who alone is mine and forever inseparable from me, whom I do not wish to see even slightly dejected for a single moment. If ever I see upon that face a wave unlike happiness, even my very strong heart seems to tear apart. In distress I pray to God, "O Bhagavan, ocean of compassion, make this beloved of mine happy and at once restore this one's radiance. May a smile arising from within spread across those lips. May I become happy on seeing the dear moonlike face bloom. May I never make such a mistake, not even inadvertently for a moment. May discrimination remain awake, always revealing to me what gives my beloved joy. May I always do what is dear and uphold every cherished reliance. May the pure nectar of bliss forever bathe my beloved."

(Raga Sohani - Tala Dadra)
Lord, in this disordered, frantic and terribly restless world, may I wander ordered, peaceful and forever unhurried, O all-pervading One. May I never become trapped in the burning addictions, activities and thoughts in which everyone is entangled and tormented. All become agitated by loving lust, pride, hatred, envy and attachment; may none of these remain in me even slightly. Caught in "I" and "mine," all dance continually out of rhythm. May I not remain among them, but now dance in proper time. Yet may I never forgetfully become even slightly proud of this. Swollen with vanity, may I never forget Your grace. May I see Your causeless grace covering me. Through its supreme strength alone this understanding arises within me. Seeing You within everyone, may I remain forever humble. May I never consider myself "great" and insult another. May the supreme virtues You have placed within me give ultimate happiness to the world burning in sorrow. May I forever remain a servant and naturally render pure service. Lord, may I live and die as Your consummate servant.
[1087]
(Raga Bhimpalasi - Tala Kaharva)
May sorrows that remind me of the Lord forever remain near me. May every pleasure that makes me forget the Lord be destroyed. That calamity in which the Lord is seen is supreme prosperity. That prosperity which draws the mind away from the Lord is calamity. That dishonor in which auspicious awareness of the Lord arises is true honor. The honor that severs contact with the Lord deserves to be burned.

May my mind never tire of hearing and telling Hari's virtues. May auspicious holy company remain my delightful lifelong companion. May I behold day and night, pervading the universe, His fresh raincloud-dark face, the exceedingly beautiful abode of bliss, and find not a moment's rest from that sight.

He is the eternal form of being, consciousness and bliss, without material quality, unborn, imperishable, unseen and incomparable. Beyond the senses, the beginning yet beginningless and limitless, He pervades the universe, is all-powerful and supports it all. No one reaches His depth; the strength of intellect becomes bewildered. Faithful saints abandon argument and forever worship Him with the heart's love. Knowing all enjoyments to be poison, they renounce them and become whole and free from disease. They desire only the one Beloved and wander through the world without care.

Land, wealth, home, name and rest are all Rama, the repose of the universe. When a towering wave of the ocean of love breaks the embankment of convention and sweeps away the current of scriptural injunction, saints cry out in love. Overwhelmed and governed by love, Sri Rama, the delightful enchanter of devotees' minds, assumes a sublime divine human body and takes a wondrous avatara in the world. Enchanting Cupid's mind and stealing sages' hearts, He brings happiness to gods, demons and the entire universe. In a radiant, sweet and lovely form, Bhagavan performs manifold play. Moved by compassion He delivers the world, and out of love He may also slay someone. His many vast, pure and vivid lilas are all supernatural, joy-giving and wondrous. By singing and hearing them, those dwelling in delusion naturally cross the ocean of becoming. Breaking maya's bondage and the world's net, they behold Sita-Rama at every moment. King of Raghu, Rama, keep revealing this same beautiful and tender form of the Divine Couple. Knowing the whole world to be pervaded by Sita-Rama, may I abandon pride and bow to all.

(Raga Bhairavi)
Love's pollen remains hidden within a bashful, half-open flower. At a first sight, the enchanted heart's sweet love will be mute. Fear, modesty, reserve and shyness suddenly stop speech completely. Voiceless, eyes and face lowered, without a smile, the lover may show childlike anger. What that lover did was simply the expression of this natural rasa. You should therefore have joyfully given Your love. It was necessary to take that simple feeling of affection to heart, not reject the new lover's speechless ardor. Is it proper to destroy every reserve at the very first meeting? Would that not truly destroy the fresh honey-rasa?

To desire a new bud to unfold completely before its time: is such an expectation not unnatural and inappropriate? Can a new bride become outspoken and joke with her beloved? Can she act foolish or suspicious and endure needless terror? Can she unveil herself like a mature woman and disturb the rasa? Abandoning reserve, could she suddenly let waves of laughter flow? Is love's true form not like a flavor relished in silence? Does not the deep, incomparable ocean of love shine within it? Does not mental worship please the Chosen Lord? Does it not steal the Lord's heart even more than external worship? If the new lover worshiped You only within the mind, Master, and, stunned, trembling and enchanted by joy, could neither speak nor hear, did this somehow dishonor You, O Lord and greatest of lovers? Bhagavan, do You regard the simple devotee's conduct as an offense? If not, Lord, then why do You disappear? Why deprive the devotee of Your sight and display such reserve? Why vanish from the eyes without telling where You have gone? Why not quickly come before devotees and give them happiness?

He is the joy and life-support of the great devotees Vasudeva and Devaki. Through His own lila He appeared within a tyrant's prison. His sacred, divine, love-filled Vraja lila is the source of lovers' joy. On the bank of the Kalindi, the flute of the Rasa-filled Lord sounded, stealing body and mind. As Giridhara and in manifold forms, Hari dispelled the error of Brahma and Indra. Slaying Kamsa and Kesi and protecting saints, He removed the anguish in the Yadu dynasty's hearts. On the battlefield He took the reins of His devotee-friend's horses. The playful ocean of love's nectar and abode of the world's happiness became his guide. Using His beloved Partha as the occasion, the compassionate Lord with enchanting eyes taught everyone the beautiful and meaningful truth of surrender.

Beloved, a desire arose within my mind that the Lord's glory should spread, and that everyone's burning sorrow should end on attaining His generous lotus feet. I do not know why this desire arose or why the pattern of life changed. Why did You then continually reveal the fresh forms, rasas and colors of Your many manifestations? A supremely divine lightning flashed and a delightful, pure stream of practice flowed. It surged, grew and moved along crookedly, repeatedly changing color. Why did You take everything away, and why then give extraordinary affection and tenderness? Why did You give opposing, downward-flowing and hollow fame? It is certain that whatever You do brings welfare. But playful Bhagavan, why do You make changes again and again? Now absorb what remains of this life only in Yourself. Make it stainless and peaceful; never allow the slightest degradation or impurity. You are my every desire, the object of desire and the foundation of all. Regard me too as Your own possession, Lord, and accept me quickly.

(Raga Vasanta - Tala Kaharva)
If, after becoming His, we remain unhappy, we cause Him sorrow. By obstructing His happiness in this way, we cast a stain upon Him. If we trust Him, why do we hesitate so greatly? Why are we not ashamed to submit so completely to fear and despair? If the Beloved feels even slight sorrow on seeing us unhappy, why, great offenders that we are, do all our selfish wishes not die? Why do we not remain supremely happy and give Him immense happiness? Why do we not always keep a joyful face and make Him laugh with our laughter?

Without love the Beloved is not attained, and without renunciation love is not attained. Therefore total renunciation is the beautiful way to attain love of the Beloved. Wealth and property, honor, rank and prestige, and endless enjoyments pleasing to the senses: the one who naturally renounces all these also ends the desire for liberation. Not the slightest desire for personal happiness remains in any form. That fortunate person attains supreme, radiant and immutable love. The unfathomable ocean of this divine nectar-rasa surges. Turning away from the ocean of compassion, I lay rotting amid foul-smelling nets, unfortunate, repeatedly offending, fallen and low. Until now, dull-minded, I remained deprived of these sacred feet. Now deprived of the entire moving and unmoving world, helpless and humble at the end, I have reached the fearless door of the Friend of the humble, afflicted and deeply wretched. Treasury of compassion, by Your very nature freely give me refuge at Your feet.
