Counsel and Warning
[1022]
(Raga Kafi - Tintal)
O bee-like mind, abandon ignorance. Keep drinking the sublime nectar of the sacred lotus feet of the Lord. The many objects of the world in which you delight, imagining happiness, are all momentary and incomplete, and are reservoirs of terrible sorrow. Only through delusion do wealth, fame, worship and honor seem dear to you. They are sweetmeats filled with poison, stealing away both knowledge and realization. Know the beauty and sweetness of enjoyments to be artificial. Ever worship the incomparable Lord, the ocean of compassion.
[1023]
(Raga Malhar - Tintal)
O mind, worship the Prince of Vraja. Abandon the filthy poison of sense objects and always drink the essence of the nectar-rasa of His form. The king of rasikas is the very form of rasa, filled with the nectar-rasa of the bliss of love. He crushes the pride of countless Cupids; His lovely beauty is wondrous and unequalled. Beautiful marks adorn the crimson soles of His soft lotus feet. His knees, thighs and waist are lovely and captivating; the flute rests in His lotus hand. His yellow garment flashes like lightning, and His supernatural dark form resembles a tamala tree. At His neck are a jeweled necklace and a fragrant garland of tulasi and forest flowers. His crimson lips are exceedingly sweet and enchanting, and His smile steals the treasure of the heart. His teeth, cheeks and nose delight the heart, while His eyes are forever absorbed in rasa.

Fool, why are you so proud of this body? Consider its condition deeply and abandon ignorance. It is worn out at hundreds of joints and afflicted by the three kinds of disease. No one knows when this sun of the body will set. All your life you prattle, "I" and "mine." Remember the day when all this will fall away. The body you wash, massage and adorn every day will one day lie as a corpse, for it is impermanent. The great body on whose strength you are forever proud within will become ash, worms or excrement. Absorbed in delusion over sense objects and devoted to sin, you remain intoxicated. The terrible servants of Yama laugh at your adamantine foolishness. (Second Lavani melody - Tala Kaharva)
Those who enter the road of sense objects seeking the water of happiness find only water resembling the waves of an ocean made of mirage. As water in a mirage cannot quench thirst, so sense objects cannot end the thirst for happiness. Just as pressing sand yields no oil, and churning water produces not a drop of clarified butter, because dust contains no oil and water contains no clarified butter, so there is not the slightest happiness in sense objects. If you want happiness, worship Hari at every moment. Adorn body and mind with holy feelings for Hari.

Afflicted by birth, death, old age, disease and sorrow, this body is impermanent. After death it will become worms, excrement or dust in the cremation ground. All enjoyments are forever impermanent and incomplete, while the current of death keeps flowing. Seeking happiness in them is a grave delusion that continually kindles anguish in the heart. Nothing here is imperishable; nothing possesses the one complete rasa. There is never even the slightest happiness in these things. Understand, observe and discriminate. Hari alone is the treasury of absolute happiness and eternal peace. If you desire happiness and peace, worship Hari and abandon this delusion-filled world.
[1031]
(Raga Vagesri - Tala Kaharva)
Bereft of the Lord and filled with the poison of sense objects, this world is terribly frightening. It is boundlessly filled with immeasurable sorrow, distress, fear, calamity, mental affliction and disease. Countless waves of sin and anguish arise each day in this ocean of becoming: birth and death, demonic births, unbearable torments of hell and grievous degradation. Delighting in sensual pleasure and veiled by delusion, a person imagines happiness in sense objects alone. He remains forever sunk in becoming, utterly forgetful of what awaits him. Governed by possessiveness, attachment and desire for sense objects, he continually commits sin. Filled with ego and pride, he fashions his own sorrows himself. Desire for enjoyment and possessiveness are certainly the roots of every sin. Entangled in them, he can never reach the farther shore of the ocean of becoming. But the greatly blessed one who places all possessiveness in the Lord and loves Him purely, becomes His servant, renounces ego and serves Him. He attains the supreme fulfillment of human life and the exceedingly rare love of God, having extinguished every demand for enjoyment and liberation.

Sense enjoyments are sweet dishes filled with poison. While being enjoyed they seem like nectar, but their result is like venom. Their captivating exterior is brightly painted, but within them lies terrible poison. The person who does not become trapped on seeing their glitter is exceedingly wise. Heavy filth fills the inside, though beauty is imagined outside. On entering them one suffers grievously, yet ignorance prevents understanding. Recognize enjoyment's true form as a mine of sin and sorrow. Abandon attachment to enjoyment and at once worship the Lord, who is filled with your welfare and happiness.
[1033]
(Raga Paraj - Tala Kaharva)
Every life, possession and authority visible in this momentary world will pass away. To desire them or to attain them is altogether futile. They can never give happiness, for they are vast oceans of sorrow. It is great folly to place any possessive affection in them. Their coming and going are all an expansion of the Lord's maya. Remain unattached among them and worship the Lord of maya forever in every way.

Why do you squander human birth in vain? Why, caught in sensory pleasures, do you burn continually in the fire of sorrow? This body, a most rare means of crossing worldly existence, is meant for remembering Hari. Obtained through the Lord's supreme grace, it is a readily available bridge across the ocean of becoming. When worship is abandoned for the service of sense objects, this bridge is broken. Then life passes while one is battered by the ocean's terrible waves. The human body is wasted; neither love nor the Lord is attained. One receives grief, unrest and the torment of hell, a mine of immense sorrow. Renounce enjoyments as poison and abandon possessiveness, attachment and pride. At every moment worship selflessly with body, mind and wealth alone. Whoever spends this birth in such a way makes human life successful. Attaining the Lord and love of the Lord, that person finds true happiness.

(Raga Tailang - Trital)
Why do you waste this priceless body? Why do you sleep in the night of possessiveness toward an impermanent, joyless world? Why ruin human birth for the sinful root called sensual pleasure? Why remain unsatisfied and weep for sound, form, taste, fragrance and touch? Why not cleanse away the filth of sin through Sri Hari's exceedingly delightful worship? Why not become a bee at Hari's lotus feet and make yourself blessed?

A moment ago he said, "This wealth is mine; this house is mine." The instant life leaves his body, they drag it outside and cast it down. You wander forgetfully, absorbed in glittering display and fashion. Day and night you willingly descend into the hellish clamor of status and prestige. Your gaudy show and merry pleasures leave you no free moment. Your tongue moves forever in singing, performance, gossip and chatter. Your relationship with all this equipment and display will be severed. The instant life leaves the body, they drag it outside and cast it down. (1)

You roam all eight watches of the day to obtain riches and wealth. The absence of desired pleasures continually troubles you within. You strut proudly because of a strong body and handsome appearance. You see happiness in sense objects, yet can never grasp it. Your connection with wealth, youth, strength and beauty will all be broken. The instant life leaves the body, they drag it outside and cast it down. (2)
You build lofty mansions to give comfort to this body. For its luxury you continually select and arrange furnishings. You apply soap and oil to make it look beautiful. To protect it you constantly propitiate gods and goddesses. That golden body of yours will become covered in dust. The instant life leaves the body, they drag it outside and cast it down. (3)
For this perishable body you do not hesitate to fight another. For this body you feel not the slightest shame in stretching out your hand to beg. Fear of thieves and robbers makes you sleep behind guards. Mistaking even a shadow for a ghost, you become terrified and distressed. That body of yours will lie alone as ashes in a deserted cremation ground. The instant life leaves the body, they drag it outside and cast it down. (4)
You regard mother, father, son and master as your own. You think friends, relatives and splendor belong to you. You never understood that your relation with them must break. Because of them, in your pride, you considered no one greater than yourself. Your connection with everyone will end, and the wilderness will become your dwelling. The instant life leaves the body, they drag it outside and cast it down. (5)

O mind, abandon hope in false happiness. Worship Hari's feet, renounce all possessiveness and leave desire for sense objects. There is no happiness in them even in a dream, only empty expectation. Wife, son, father, mother, relatives, fame and reputation are all beautiful snares. In a moment one is separated from them all, for relentless Time destroys the world. All sense objects are momentary and continually become Time's food. Whoever still seeks happiness in them dies forever thirsty. The Lord's lotus feet are forever imperishable; serving them brings supreme delight. Those whose minds possess faith attain supreme happiness that never diminishes.
[1041]
(Raga Purvi - Tintal)
In this world all companions are governed by self-interest. One is loved only as long as another interest remains to be served. Parents endure an ocean of hardship day and night for their son's welfare, yet when they grow old and their usefulness ends, that very son wishes them dead. A youthful wife is exceedingly dear only while she is fit for enjoyment. If fate subjects that same woman to disease, he immediately wishes her dead. The woman who repeatedly calls her husband "beloved" and "lord of my life," displaying boundless affection, may attach herself to another man and wish for her husband's death.

O mind, remember something of that coming day, the day when every branch of the shop called your body will close and depart. None of the senses will ask permission; all will abandon you and go. No son, family member or wife will inquire into the story of your suffering. The messengers of Yama will arrive with a warrant, seize you and bind you. No one will become your helper; all will merely watch as Time takes you away. In hell, Yama's prison, you will suffer terrible distress. Remembering your deeds again and again, you will beat your head in remorse. If you wish to escape this sorrow, call out Hari's Name. Through Rama's Name every sorrow is erased and the supreme essence of happiness is found.

O mind, pause and reflect. You accepted this false world as true and wander lost like a rustic fool. Like a deer deceived on seeing unreal water spread across the desert, you see trees in the empty sky through a false defect of vision. Like one who sees a rope and mistakes it for a snake, crying out in fear, or mistakes a shell for silver, so too this world is false. You take the sights of a dream to be real, though there is no substance in them. In the same way this world only appears falsely, a play produced by material nature.

For the wealth you seek, you forget Hari and wander day and night. Abandoning Dharma and righteous action, you always crave like a vulture lusting after flesh. You quarrel with everyone and honor neither venerable relatives nor father and mother. All that wealth and property will remain here; not a penny will go with you. Goods and estates will all remain behind, and every relationship will break. Blood brothers, sons and guests will depart, as will mother and father. Mind, abandon this cry of "mine, mine"; in the end no one is yours.
For wealth you wandered everywhere, devising a new scheme each day. You searched and searched, earning sin, yet not a single coin went with you. It acquired many new owners. Abandon this "mine, mine."
You tied your turban at an angle and became a dashing, handsome fellow. You placed each foot upon the earth with studied pride, but death walked an unassuming path and scattered every one of your bones. Abandon this "mine, mine."
Each day you bathed with soap and applied perfume and scented oil. Your finely decorated doll of a body went to lie in the cremation ground, where they burned it into a heap of ash. Abandon this "mine, mine."
Drunk with pride, you remained harsh and kept your eyes red with anger. You gave no respect to a guest and spoke no sweet word. At the end Yama's messengers came and surrounded you. Abandon this "mine, mine."
You coveted another's wealth and wife and delighted in gossip. You placed a bundle of sin upon your head and remained unconscious, O fool. Then hell became your dwelling. Abandon this "mine, mine."
You did not take Rama's Name and felt no love for holy company. You drank poison and rejected nectar; at the end dust fell into your mouth. All your breaths passed in vain. Abandon this "mine, mine."
You lost the rare human body and performed wicked deeds. Crying "I, I," you died and fell defeated before Yama. Then you entered the cycle of birth and death again. Abandon this "mine, mine."

Bee-like mind, deluded and without a goal, why do you wander here and there? Foolish mind, why do you waste life's priceless opportunity? Why do you covet the poisonous vine of sense objects, filled with foul fragrance and thorns? Why endure continual blows and suffer sorrow without end? You may wander at every step through the garden of the world and become utterly wretched. Struck down at door after door, you may be humiliated, degraded and soiled. Endure a little more anguish if awareness still does not arise in you. Become hopeless and wander shamelessly; then, if you wish, keep plunging into the depths.

You may mistake the poisonous vine of sense objects for a lotus and become absorbed in it. You may mistake poison-filled enjoyments for water and become a fish within them. But until you find the sacred pollen of the lotus feet of the Lord, until matchless, exclusive love for those feet arises within you, and until you have made yourself wholly subject to Him, you will not be seated upon that delightful celestial lotus. Until then your burning will not cease and this delusion will not depart. You will find no joy-giving peace, and your terrible exhaustion will not end. Therefore quickly become absorbed in Hari's beautiful lotus feet. Relish their sweet nectar and become sinless, pure and well-nourished. Abandon fear, toil and division, and continually drink the blissful nectar-rasa. Become peaceful and immortal and forever sing the many virtues of the pair of feet that grants refuge.
[1049]
(Raga Nursarang - Trital)
Enjoyments are immense sorrow and the roots of hell. Never worship them by mistake for the sake of pleasure to mind and senses. Great sin, manifold sorrow and the disease of becoming arise with enjoyment, ruining the whole pure and beautiful color of human life. Each day comes the compulsive desire for vile wealth, honor, fame and rank. Each day brings betrayal of trust, deceit, falsehood, hypocrisy and corrupt conduct. Attachment and hatred, malice and cruelty continually burn the heart terribly. Each day brings devotion to adharma and zeal for the evil path. Each day brings enmity, violence and retaliation, and endless destructive argument. Every day holds sorrow, unrest, anxiety and fear, grief and despondency. The result is an exceedingly painful death and suffering after death: low births, poverty, disease and sorrow, and association with hellish realms. Therefore those who abandon sorrowful enjoyment and serve Hari, the form of happiness, attain the divine, exclusive and incomparable bliss of the Lord.

Look toward the door of your eternal dwelling. You forgot your own stainless nature and forgot the ways of your true family. Inflated with pride and entangled, you wander continually and endure the world's rebukes. Entering another city and another house, you fostered a family not truly your own. You fell into the hands of the five thieves, were plundered and became helpless. Awaken even now, take the true path and leave the abode of maya. Carry the radiant light of love and walk toward your own home, the essence of happiness. Through tranquility, sense restraint and the other disciplines, swiftly destroy the bandits of lust and anger. Attend the sacred school of holy company, which removes the traveler's weariness. Fearlessly and forever cry Sri Hari's Name, which calms the heart and destroys fear. Let heaps of sin perish on hearing the thunderous cry, "Hari! Hari! Hari!" Take refuge in the generous lotus feet of the Lord, who cherishes those surrendered to Him. Reach your own home, become eternally conscious in nature, and enter boundless plenary bliss.
