Various Themes from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

[961]

(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)

[A Verse Translation of the First Chapter of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita]

Gathered with desire for war on holy Kurukshetra, the field of Dharma, Sanjaya, tell me: what did my sons and Pandu's sons do there? (1) Seeing the Pandava army arrayed there in well-ordered formation, Duryodhana approached teacher Drona and spoke as follows. (2) "Revered sir, behold the Pandava army, arranged in battle formation by your disciple Dhrishtadyumna. Teacher, examine it well. (3) Here are mighty archers equal to Bhima and Arjuna, exceedingly heroic and skilled in war: Yuyudhana, Virata and powerful King Drupada, the great chariot warrior. (4) Dhrishtaketu, King Chekitana and the King of Kashi, treasury of strength and valor; Purujit, Kuntibhoja and mighty Shaibya, the noblest of men. (5) The valiant Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, treasury of immense strength; the sons of Draupadi and Subhadra's son Abhimanyu, all great chariot warriors. (6) Best of brahmanas, I shall now tell you the names of the chief leaders of my army. For your recognition I name them all; please know them. (7) Yourself, grandsire Bhishma, Karna and wise Kripacharya, victorious in battle; Ashvatthama, Somadatta's son Bhurishrava and discerning Vikarna. (8) Many other great heroes have renounced life for my sake. All are equipped with many weapons, experts in war and repositories of strategy. (9) Our strength, guarded by grandsire Bhishma, is immeasurable and fully secured; their strength, though protected by Bhimasena, is limited. (10) All of you, firmly stationed everywhere in your respective places on the battlefield, must exert your full power to protect the grandsire. (11)

Then mighty Bhishma, ancient of the Kurus, filling the king with joy, roared like a lion and blew his formidable conch in a high voice. (12) Conches, drums, tabors, trumpets and horns then began to sound fiercely. Their tumultuous sound suddenly burst forth everywhere at once. (13) Lovely Madhava and Arjuna, seated in a splendid chariot yoked with white horses, began continually sounding their respective divine conches. (14) Hari sounded Panchajanya and steadfast Arjuna sounded Devadatta; Bhima of terrible deeds blew the mighty, deep-sounding conch Paundra. (15) King Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, sounded Anantavijaya; then Sahadeva and Nakula fearlessly blew Manipushpaka and Sughosha. (16) The great archer King of Kashi, heroic Shikhandi the great chariot warrior, Dhrishtadyumna, King Virata and wise, ever-unconquered Satyaki; (17) Drupada, Draupadi's five sons and discerning Abhimanyu, the great chariot warrior: Lord of the earth, each one sounded his own mighty conch. (18) That terrifying conch blast tore the hearts of the Kaurava host. Its tumultuous sound spread everywhere and made heaven and earth resound. (19) King, seeing the Kaurava army drawn up, heroic Kapidhvaja lifted his great bow at the very moment weapons were about to be released. (20) He spoke these words to Hrishikesha: "Achyuta, take my chariot at once and station it between the two armies now, O Nandalala. (21) Hari, I wish to see all the warriors assembled here for battle, arrayed in their war gear, with whom I must fight today. (22) I shall behold those powerful warriors who have come desiring the welfare of evil-minded Duryodhana and stand eager to fight, O Bhagavan." (23) When Arjuna had spoken thus, Shri Bhagavan, Lord of the senses, personally drove the excellent chariot at once between the two armies. (24) Where Bhishma, Drona and other heroes stood among countless kings, the Lord said, "Son of Kunti, now behold them well." (25)

There Partha saw fathers, grandsires and great teachers standing, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, all his people and discerning friends. (26) Seeing fathers-in-law and all well-wishers in both armies, Partha recognized that everyone standing ready for war was truly his own kin. (27) Overwhelmed by supreme compassion, grieving Partha said, "Krishna, seeing all my people eager for war and sounding their battle cries, (28) my limbs grow weak, my mouth dries and becomes utterly parched, my whole body trembles and my hair stands on end. (29) The bow Gandiva slips from my hand and my skin burns without relief. I cannot remain standing; my mind seems bewildered, O Ghanashyama. (30) Keshava, I see only adverse omens of every kind. I perceive no good in killing my own people here. (31) I desire neither victory nor kingdom, nor do I desire the store of pleasures. What use have we for kingdom, enjoyment or life, generous Govinda? (32) Those for whose sake we desire kingdom, enjoyment and happiness in the heart stand here in battle, disregarding life and wealth. (33) Paternal uncles, sons, grandsires, old and young, revered teachers, maternal uncles, brothers-in-law, fathers-in-law, grandsons and all other relatives. (34) Madhusudana, even if they kill me I shall not strike them, not even for sovereignty over the three worlds, much less this trifling earth. (35) Janardana, what good could come from killing all these relatives? Even killing these aggressors will bring us only sin. (36) Therefore it is not fitting that we kill our kinsmen, Dhritarashtra's sons. Madhava, how could we be happy after killing our own people? (37) Though their minds are corrupted and overcome by greed, so they cannot see the fault of destroying the family and the grave sin born of betraying friends, (38) we, Janardana, know the sin produced by destroying the family. Why then should we not consider avoiding it, Bhagavan?" (39)

[961, continued]

When a family is destroyed, its true and eternal family Dharmas perish. With Dharma destroyed, unrighteousness naturally spreads throughout the family. (40) Overcome by unrighteousness, the family's women become deeply corrupted, great Krishna. Descendant of Vrishni, those corrupted women give birth to mixed-lineage offspring. (41) Such mixture causes both the family and its destroyers to dwell in hell. The ancestors also fall when offerings of rice and water cease. (42) Through these faults arising from the mixed lineage created by family destroyers, the eternal Dharmas of social order and family are ruined, O Shyama. (43) We have heard that those whose family Dharmas are destroyed certainly dwell in hell for an indefinite and very long time. (44) Alas, what sorrow! Today we are surely about to commit a great sin, driven by greed for kingdom and pleasure to kill our own people. (45) If the armed Kauravas kill me in battle while I am unarmed and do not resist, that would bring me the greatest good. (46) Speaking thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside bow and arrows, his mind overcome by grief, and withdrew to sit silently in the rear of the chariot. (47)

[962]

(Raga Adana - Tintala)

Rise, hero! Abandon cowardice. Make the enemy's heart tremble; fight, steadfast warrior in battle!

Leap into this righteous war and fight for Dharma. If you die, heaven awaits; if you win, sovereignty over earth.

This is the moment to reveal your full courage and strength. Strike down and drive away the sinful host; destroy sin.

[963]

(Raga Jogiya - Tintala)

Even considering your own Dharma, do not entertain this agitation. Nothing in the world is more truly essential for a kshatriya than a righteous war.

[963, continued]

This war, gained without seeking, is the open gateway to heaven. Only fortunate kshatriyas obtain such a war, O son of Pandu. If you die, heaven awaits; if you are victorious, sovereignty over earth. Therefore, Bharata, surely rise today to fight. Regard victory and defeat, loss and gain, happiness and sorrow as equal. Then enter the battle; wise one, no sin will touch you.

[964]

(Second Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)

If you turn away from battle and bring grief into your heart, you will surely fall from a kshatriya's supreme Dharma. Again and again hearing the enemy's abusive words, you will deeply regret it. Then, compelled by your own nature, you will take up weapons and return to the battlefield. But the sorrow will be great and you will have to endure unbearable humiliation. Therefore rise this very instant, discerning one, and swiftly take bow and arrows.

[965]

(Raga Paraja - Tala Kaharava)

Arjuna, how has this delusion arisen in you at this critical moment? It is practiced by the ignoble, bars heaven and heaps up disgrace. Such impotence is not worthy of you; do not accept it. Abandon this petty weakness of heart, rise and embrace battle.

(Gita 2.2-3)

Bharata, the eternal living self is immeasurable and imperishable. Fight, knowing that all its bodies are unsteady and transient. Those who regard the self as killer or killed do not understand: it neither kills nor is killed.

[965, continued]

Considering your own Dharma, Partha, do not tremble. For a kshatriya no good is truly higher than battle. Best of heroes, this gate of heaven has opened for you of itself. Only happy and fortunate kshatriyas obtain such a sinless war. If you do not undertake this supreme battle of Dharma, you will lose your own Dharma and good name and gather every kind of sin. Then everyone in the world will forever sing of your indelible disgrace. For one who has been honored, dishonor is worse than death. The great chariot warriors will think you withdrew from battle in fear. Among those who highly esteemed you, your name will become contemptible. Your enemies will speak abuse, condemning your strength and capability. What immeasurable sorrow could be greater for you than that? If you die, you will attain heaven; if you win, you will gain the kingdom. Therefore rise, son of Kunti, resolving in your heart to fight today. Regard victory and defeat, gain and loss, happiness and sorrow as equal; then, entering battle, not the slightest sin will touch you.

(Gita 2.31-38)

Abandon attachment, Dhananjaya; established in yoga, humbly perform action. Hold equal understanding in failure and success, for evenness toward results is sacred yoga.

(Gita 2.48)

[966]

[972]

(Raga Bhinnashadja - Tala Dipachandi)

One should place the mind in meditation in this way. Little by little, increasing practice, bring withdrawal into consciousness. With understanding held firmly by fortitude, establish the mind in the Self. Think of nothing else at all; meditate only upon the Self. Wherever the unstable and restless mind wanders out, bring it back from each place and return it to the Self alone. The stainless yogi of perfectly peaceful mind becomes free from rajas and merges into the dense being, consciousness and bliss of Supreme Brahman.

(Gita 6.25-28)

[973]

(Raga Khamaja - Tintala)

The Self abides in all beings, and all beings without exception abide in the Self. This is the special vision of the yogi joined to yoga, seeing all equally. One who sees Me everywhere and sees the entire visible world in Me: I am not hidden from that soul, nor is that soul hidden from Me. One who worships Me dwelling in all beings, maintaining a sense of unity, that yogi, living in every circumstance, acts for My sake. Arjuna, one who sees the happiness and sorrow of all as equal to one's own is regarded as the highest and greatest yogi.

(Gita 6.29-32)

[974]

(Raga Vihagara - Tala Kaharava)

The yogi who falls from practice goes to worlds of merit and lives there long in happiness, then is born in the home of pure and wealthy people established upon the right path. From infancy the child receives the holy company of devoted parents, and, growing in a pure atmosphere, becomes increasingly absorbed in spiritual practice.

Through the Lord's grace and the power of practice, former discipline awakens. The soul becomes Brahman-like, and every false superimposition then disappears.

(Raga Nata - Tintala)

One who is devoted to excellent practice, abandoning all worldly self-interest, and carefully pursues the pure supreme goal throughout all eight watches of the day, yet dies before reaching the Reality that is the goal, obtains the exceedingly rare birth in a family of wise yogis.

(Gita 6.42)

[976]

(Raga Hamira - Tala Kaharava)

Those whose entire knowledge Maya has taken away take shelter in demonic nature and daily commit grave evil. They consider absorption in degraded sensual enjoyment a source of great prestige. Such deluded lowest men never worship Shri Bhagavan.

(Gita 7.15)

[977]

(Raga Yaman - Tala Kaharava)

At the end of many births, the person of realized knowledge worships Me, knowing, "Vasudeva is everything." Such a wise great soul is rare.

(Gita 7.19)

[978]

(Raga Patadipa - Tintala)

One who worships spirits reaches the spirits. A worshiper of the ancestors surely goes to the ancestral realm. One who worships the gods according to rule reaches the realm of the gods. The holy worshiper of Bhagavan goes only to Bhagavan's feet.

(Raga Madhuvanti - Tintala)

Whatever a person constantly remembers throughout life is the very object that remains in the mind at life's end. That alone appears above and below, outside and within; after death a person surely attains that very object. At the end Bharata beheld the young deer, and therefore he would next receive a deer's body. Thus one who worships Narahari at all times, offering mind and understanding, surely attains Hari.

(Gita 8.6-7)

[980]

(Raga Khambhavati - Tintala)

The feelings, thoughts and actions that occupy a person throughout life are those long-practiced states that arise in the mind at death. The next world and birth are obtained according to the final state. Therefore throughout life contemplate and serve the Lord in thought and action.

(Gita 8.6-7)

[981]

(Raga Paraja - Tala Kaharava)

Therefore remember Me at all times and then fight this righteous war. Offering mind and understanding, purified, you will surely attain Me.

(Gita 8.7)

[982]

(Raga Gauda Saranga - Tintala)

Restraining the mind within the heart and closing every gate of the senses, establishing the life-breath in the crown, one who maintains yogic concentration and, remembering Me, utters the one syllable Om, Brahman, attains the supreme, exalted goal upon leaving the body.

(Raga Vasanta - Tintala)

Sinners go to hells and endure infernal torment throughout all eight watches. Those who travel the ancestral path obtain heaven's splendid divine enjoyments. When that enjoyment ends, they return with their minds still full of desires. Those who follow the path of the gods to the Lord's abode never return.

[984]

(Raga Sohani - Rupaka Tala)

The knower of Brahman travels upon the bright, luminous and excellent path, receiving honor from all the deities who govern the way. The immortals governing fire, day, the bright fortnight and the northern course accompany the soul to the pure boundary of their respective domain. With great honor they entrust the soul to the next immortal, then return to the sphere over which they preside. Thus the yogi successively passes beyond the whole expanse of Nature, breaking every tie with Maya's transient world, and reaches the Lord's eternal divine abode. Having attained Brahman, that yogi never returns to the world.

(Gita 8.24, 26-27)

[985]

(Raga Hindola - Rupaka Tala)

The meritorious yogi who retains desire travels upon the path to heaven, receiving honor from all the deities who govern the way. The immortals governing smoke, night, the dark fortnight and the southern course accompany the soul to the boundary of their respective domains. In proper sequence they entrust the soul to the next immortal, until that yogi reaches the luminous lunar realm. After enjoying in heaven the fruits of righteous actions, the soul returns to the mortal world and obtains mortal life again.

You establish unwavering devotion, are stainless and remove impurity. You reveal the secret of refuge and bring happiness in every way.

You tear apart passion and aversion and forever create joy. You remove the fear of becoming, carry souls across and grant supreme bliss.

You destroy demonic disposition and end the night of darkness. You grant divine virtues, O companion delighting in Hari's rasa.

You teach equality and renunciation, the speech from Hari's own mouth. You are Lady of all shastras and Queen of the Vedas.
