The Nature of the Lord
[930]
(Raga Bhupali - Tintala)
How naturally friendly my Lord is, how supremely generous! How magnanimous, subject to His servants, an immeasurable treasury of compassion! What can a wretched person offer Him except one's own helplessness? He accepts that as surrender and gives the soul a place upon His lap. He becomes grateful and does not inspect that person's virtues or faults. Forgetting every former sin, He embraces the soul and gives contentment. He makes the soul perfectly pure and at once turns it into His instrument. Breathing ever-new mantras into it, He accomplishes through it many works dear to Him.
[931]
(Raga Pilu - Tintala)
Only Hari is our benefactor equal to Hari. He is the sole refuge of the lowly and fallen, their natural helper and support. He does not count even one grave fault of a person who has taken refuge. Giving His own support, He removes all that person's pain. Bestowing the gift of His mercy, He grants fearlessness and takes away every fear and grief. At the end He sends the soul to His divine abode, overcome by His own gracious nature.
[932]
(Raga Saranga - Tintala)
Hari's devotees are exceedingly dear to Hari. Hari keeps no distinction between Himself and His devotees, but makes them equal to Himself. He considers nothing of caste, social place, family home, religion or wealth. Where a heart holds causeless love for Hari's feet, He forgets every formal rule. He delivered the hunter, Nishada, Ajamila, the courtesan and countless other fallen souls. Overcome by love, He carried across the elephant, bird, monkey, bear and rakshasa.

Recognizing her love, Rama joyfully came to Shabari's dwelling. Again and again He ate the fruits she had tasted and, overcome, kept praising them. Vidura's wife forgot all awareness of her body when Shyama entered her home. With a heart immersed in love, she fed Him banana peels and He ate them. O mind, do not forget such supremely loving Hari. Become a bee and taste the rasa of the Lord's lotus feet.
[933]
(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)
I become the beloved of the one who has no one in the world. That person forever dwells in My heart, and I rest happily within that heart. I never abandon that person but remain forever close by. I alone am Lord of that heart, and that soul is surely My dear servant.
[934]
(Raga Bihaga - Tala Mula)
How utterly wondrous and compassionate, how noble in conduct is Bhagavan! Supremely exalted, He makes Himself utterly insignificant and distributes vast divine love. O ocean of love, Lord, You come running to me for this reason: to immerse Yourself in the tiny drop of Your own love within me. What a seeming absurdity! King of kings, You become a beggar and come to my door, yet every time I push You away, reject You and send You back. But You do not become angry or irritated, nor do You take it as an insult. Moved by Your own nature, You return to give the rare nectar of love. You play the sweet flute and continually sound melodies in varied notes. The sweet music reaches my ears, yet this lowly soul pays no heed. Though I hear, in my depravity I do not listen; my worldly tasks are never finished. Yet Your fountain does not stop showering rasa, O abode of rasa! Master, You can never abandon Your nature. You will take me as Your own despite myself and make me blessed and fortunate.

(Raga Bhimapalasi - Tintala)
He alone is Lord and support of infinite universes. He alone is the boundless ocean of all wealth, divine glory and power. Eternally infinite, without equal or superior, ineffably supreme and the highest good, nothing anywhere or at any time can ever be compared with Him. He is attained only through pure love and is the great connoisseur of love's jewel. Bhagavan sells Himself for each tiny particle of pure love.
[936]
(Raga Bhupali - Tintala)
The Dark Beloved is forever subject to love. Filled with love-rasa, the supreme rasika, He is eternally immersed in love's honeyed essence. He continually repeats His lovers' names and meditates upon them. He remains enchanted by the sweet smiles upon their lips. To make them happy He abandons every attitude of lordship. Naturally forgetting His divinity, He serves them with great delight. Spontaneously offering them everything He has, He regards them as His chosen deities. He takes particles of dust from their feet and considers His life blessed.
[937]
(Raga Purvi - Tintala)
I am forever sold into My devotees' hands. I keep them in My heart every watch of the day and do not forget them for even an instant. I find no peace dwelling in Vaikuntha, nor can I be contained in yogis' minds. Where My devotees sing with love, there I dwell and find happiness. Whatever preference I see in My devotees, I assume a form to match it. For their sake I set aside My own word and fulfill theirs. With My own hands I successfully perform every high or low task for them. I wash their feet, drive their chariot, clean their vessels and raise their shelter.

(Raga Yaman - Tintala)
Whoever longs for Him is desired by the Beloved Himself. Whoever sighs for Him, for that soul He Himself sighs. For one who cannot find peace even for a moment in separation from the Beloved, the Beloved's eyes forever pour streams of affection. Shyama keeps that soul dwelling in His heart like a miser's treasure. His beautiful eyes forever yearn to behold that person. Being-consciousness-bliss Himself comes and remains continually near. He gives and receives happiness from that soul, Himself an insatiable fountain of happiness.
[939]
(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)

(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)
When sweet remembrance of the Beloved has driven a person's mind mad, the Beloved remains intensely eager at every moment to embrace that soul. He can never forget that person, but forever fills the heart with ever-new feelings. The treasury of love's nectar surges immensely, forever bringing fresh delight.

Do not be afraid or abandon courage; keep firm faith in the Lord. The Lord's grace will naturally destroy every obstacle and hindrance. With faith, keep striving always for the Lord's pleasure alone. You will reach the supreme goal, Bhagavan, in peace and happiness.
Bhagavan's grace is the wealth of the lowly, and they possess a rightful claim to it. No qualification is required, nor are country, lineage or religion considered. There is no question of eligibility, no condition and no contract. Only let there be unwavering, uncalculating faith in the Friend of the lowly.
[946]
(Raga Paraja - Tala Kaharava)
Eternally and without interruption, the Lord is by nature a treasury of auspicious grace. Therefore every one of His arrangements is filled with blessing. We shortsighted people cannot see this great grace of His. Thus, in our corrupt understanding, we needlessly drown in fear and grief. The Lord's boundless grace continually rains upon everyone without distinction, but lacking faith and filled with delusion, we cannot experience it. Yet the supremely generous Lord's grace never leaves anyone deprived. Giving the proper sweet or bitter medicine, it continually removes disease and disorder.

One who is downtrodden, neglected, forgotten, utterly insignificant and joyless in the world rests the head and sleeps happily in the Beloved Lord's blissful lap. One whom no one respects and no one even asks about, Hari, Lord of the entire universe and Friend of the lowly, personally caresses. One whom every person would feel ashamed to call "mine," Hari Himself cherishes, entering the heart and awakening understanding. One whose heart has not a single listener in the world, He hears without tiring and keeps His pledge through age after age. One who receives no honor anywhere and finds no love at all receives the supreme Beloved's limitless affection and tenderness. One whom the world calls foolish and everyone mocks, the Lord accepts as His own and daily laughs and sports with that soul. One whom worldly people despise as wretched and poor, the Beloved makes His lover and forever grants His rarely attained company. He does not inspect country, caste or lineage, wealth, followers or honor. He does not inspect sin or impurity, education or knowledge. He does not inspect social order, stage of life, age, intelligence or opinions. He does not inspect woman or man, who the person is, where they are or how they behave. Whoever with a simple heart becomes His, offering body and mind, the Lord through His causeless grace at once makes that soul His own. He immediately takes away every sin and impurity and every torment. He makes the soul His own and Himself becomes that soul's own. Abandoning every hope in the world's creatures, objects and circumstances, whoever becomes the beloved Lord's own has a blessed, fortunate life. That soul belongs to the Lord and the Lord belongs to that soul; the soul gains a claim upon the Beloved. Gods and sages all sincerely honor the dust of that person's feet.

The embodiment of helplessness places firm trust in the Lord's causeless grace and fills the heart with eager delight to behold the feet that are naturally refuge. Coming to those feet, the soul lets itself fall there without effort, naturally, truthfully and unconditionally surrendering as a servant of a particle of foot-dust. The Lord, tender toward the surrendered, does not ask at all about the past. Moved by natural grace, He considers neither religion, caste nor wrongdoing. Making the soul stainless, He raises His boon-bestowing hand and rests it upon the head, conferring blessedness. At once He grants the eternally rare right of service desired by sages.

(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)
Gravely unholy and impure in mind, I deceive the world by dressing in a saint's fine garb. I act out loving devotion though not the faintest particle of love exists in me. I cry and shed tears, laugh and perform sweet, unrestrained dances. I speak of divine-play rasa and falsely pose as a renunciant, a hypocritical fraud. Wicked at heart yet dressed as cultured, I teach pure conduct and proclaim Dharma. Forever absorbed in misconduct, body and mind are overshadowed only by deceit and unrighteousness. I celebrate festivals and holy days and daily display boundless enthusiasm. My mind remains fixed on being worshiped and is full of craving for honor. I never worship the Lord, but make a mockery of Him. Forever seeking sensory pleasure, this fallen soul has become a slave of enjoyment. These extremely grave offenses of mine can never merit forgiveness. I even intend to deceive the all-seeing indwelling Lord. Fit for a state lower than the hells, I am an ocean of sin. Even so, moved by His own nature, the supremely generous Compassionate One does not forget me. He says, "Abandon every other refuge and come into My exclusive shelter. I shall wash away every sin and torment and make you blessed at once!"
[956]
(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharava)
My eternally dearest Lord, You Yourself come in the form of death. You change the outward costume but do not leave me for even a moment. You take me far or near, to hell or heaven according to Your will. You keep making me happy, repeatedly giving Your embrace. Even in death's attire I shall see the Beloved's sweet and enchanting form. Receiving that fearless, blissful embrace, I shall become an abode of happiness. Only those who cannot recognize You become afraid and weep. Adorned in death's fearsome costume, it is You who come, sweet and lovely Bhagavan.

English translation
[956, continued]
Life and death alike, Beloved, are eternally Your sweet play. Within them all is Your eternal union filled with supreme bliss's nectar. The world and all the world's transformations are Your manifestations, Lord. They arise from You, they are made of You, and You remain with them all. Only two realities are true in the world: the Playful Lord and the manifestation of His play. Divine play and the Lord of play are eternally nondifferent, Bhagavan as being, consciousness and bliss.
[957]
(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)
Bhagavan is not pleased by a false display of words. Bhagavan is never attained through artistic skill, reputation or costume. Bhagavan is attained only through a true, exclusive and most intense longing. Bhagavan considers nothing of caste, social rank, history, religion or family.
[958]
(Raga Nata - Tala Mula)
Our beloved Bhagavan forever experiences all our happiness and sorrow. Seated inside our dark prison cell, He regards it as His own temple. He never becomes even slightly weary and never advertises any favor. We alone keep needlessly striking the false tune of foolish understanding.
[959]
(Lavani melody - Tala Kaharava)
The beloved Lord is so affectionate that He remains forever close to you. In every condition and at every time He continually dwells near you. Leaving you does not please Him even for a moment. "Never abandon one whom I have accepted even once" is His pledge. Though that soul may forget Him, He can never forget. Abandoning the limits of convention, He remains in the heart and keeps the soul there. See Him forever near you, always smiling His sweet, gentle smile. Remain eternally blessed and continually behold His matchless divine play.

(Raga Malakaunsa - Tintala)
You are Mine, brother, truly Mine.
You are Mine, all that is yours is Mine, and the whole world is Mine.
In your heart you may always think yourself another's while outwardly saying, "I am Yours." Even while seeming to be Mine, such a person remains separate from Me.
But one who abandons deceit even once and says, "Lord, I am Yours," becomes dearer to Me than all My children.
Though forever sinful, forever doing evil and intoxicated by sense objects, the moment that soul says with a true heart, "I am Yours," that soul becomes Mine.
At once the soul becomes virtuous and is released from sins. Mine, seated in My lap, the soul is never again separate from Me.
One who is Mine in body, mind and speech is certainly Mine. My name, celebrated nature and glory have never been shamed and never shall be.
