Songs in Praise of Shri Rama
[824]
(Raga Malakosha - Tritala)
Lovely Ayodhya is adorned with wondrous, many-colored pavilions. Within it stands a beautiful wish-fulfilling tree that grants every desire and perfection. At its base shines an utterly enchanting throne, splendidly fashioned from priceless emerald, gold and sapphire. Its divine radiance dispels the deepest darkness and effortlessly spreads the rare light of stainless knowledge. Upon it sits Bhagavan Raghavendra, enchanter of every heart. His divine form is dark with a greenish luster, like a blade of durva grass. His body of being, consciousness and bliss is illumined by brilliant splendor. Worshiped by the king of gods, He swiftly removes every pain from every heart. The abundant beauty of the Lord's lovely face continually puts the full moon of the autumn night to shame. Even that moon's charming radiance appears immeasurably pale beside the strange, incomparable beauty of Raghava's lotus face. His auspicious forehead is a mass of light, beautiful as the eighth-day moon. Rows of black curling locks display vast and lucid beauty. The gems and jewels of His divine crown spread rays of brilliance. The boundless beauty of His makara-shaped earrings lies beyond description. His lovely reddish lips resemble coral and His row of teeth the moon's rays. His splendid tongue shines with the auspicious red of a hibiscus blossom.

His conch-shaped neck is the eternal dwelling of the Rig Veda and the other scriptures. All these graceful limbs increase the beauty of His divine form. The Lord's high, powerful shoulders resemble a lion's and are abodes of beauty. His mighty arms are splendidly adorned with bracelets and armlets. Diamond-studded rings shine upon Him at all times. Raghavendra's beautiful, massive arms extend down to His knees. His broad chest, Lakshmi's dwelling place, is the very essence of beauty. Marked with Shrivatsa and other signs, it is eternally enchanting and generous. His abdomen is lovely, His navel deep and His waist exceptionally beautiful. A jewel-studded girdle especially heightens the beauty of His sacred limbs. His hips are stainless, His knees lovely and His lotus feet infinitely radiant. His soles, marked with goad, barleycorn, thunderbolt and other signs, are treasuries of beauty. Wise people who meditate upon the divine form of Shri Raghava, the yogis' object of contemplation, and daily worship Him with auspicious offerings, become dear to the Lord and are eternally worshiped by all the gods and kings. They attain Raghavendra's supremely incomparable and rarely gained devotion.

The two royal sons, Rama and Lakshmana, shine beside Kaushika. Nectar of beauty and treasures of loveliness surge through their graceful limbs. One is lightning and the other a raincloud, superb in color, masses of brilliance colored by rasa. Beholding their beauty from toenails to crown, countless Cupids are enchanted. Bows and arrows in hand, poised like lions, yellow cloth and quivers at their waists, they protect the sage's sacrifice, dispel fear and wander forever unattached. They defeated the dreadful, crooked and ignoble Maricha and serpentlike Subahu, making every limb of the sage's sacrifice successful.

He gave Sita to Ramabhadra and delightedly gave Urmila to Lakshmana, Mandavi to Bharata and Shrutakirti to Shatrughna. The sages duly performed the marriage rites for all four couples. Measureless bliss spread through Janakapuri and throughout the whole world.

If that dust touches it and it becomes the sage's wife, where shall I ever find another boat like this?"

If You permit, I shall bring a wooden basin, fill it with Ganga water and carry it to You, Lord. I shall wash Your feet and thoroughly remove their dust, making it foot-nectar that destroys sin. By Your feet I swear, Lord, I shall not let You board the boat in any other way. If Lakshmana grows angry and shoots an arrow, I am helpless; I shall grasp Your feet and give up my life." Raghuraja heard these awkward yet lovely words, filled with love, complete innocence and simplicity. The treasury of compassion laughed and gave permission; the boatman said that he would carry Them across.

The Lord smiled and said, "Brother, do whatever will preserve your boat. Bring Ganga water and wash My feet; delay no longer." Hearing these words, the boatman ran at once, greatly rejoicing within. He filled a basin with Ganga water and called his whole family. He came and began to wash the Lord's feet, unable to contain the bliss in his heart. Sweet, tender and beautiful royal princes! The two adolescent brothers, one dark and one fair, are pure treasuries of beauty. Between the two shines Shri Janaki, filled with boundless beauty. Beholding the stainless three, a river of reverence surges through the heart. Wondering, she asks her beloved about the forest, reflecting within her heart. Again and again He looks at Sita's body and lovingly explains things to His beloved. The ignorant, foolish demon rushed to kill Sita. Maya's daughter seized his hand and spoke humbly of righteous policy. She took the anger- and delusion-driven Ravana away with her.

When the king of gods saw Janaki, Mother of the world, overwhelmed by sorrow, Shachi's heroic and pure lord felt great pain and came carrying divine food. Reassuring Her, he said, "Mother, Raghubara will destroy Ravana with his entire dynasty. Victorious and generous, He will take You away with Him. Remain patient for a few days and accept this service from Your servant. Eat this divine sacrificial food of the gods and transcend hunger and thirst. Mother, hunger and thirst will never trouble You again." When Sita recognized the king of gods, She accepted the divine food. Receiving the Mother's auspicious blessing, Indra happily returned. Blessed alone is one whose body, mind and wealth are always devoted to Rama's work.

"Hanuman found Sita's whereabouts, met Her himself and returned. This supremely powerful hero is the protector of Me, Lakshmana and Raghu's line. I possess nothing worthy of giving him as a gift today. I have considered it and can never free Myself from this debt. At this moment I can give him only the gift of an embrace. This is all I possess; may great-souled Hanuman be pleased with it." Speaking thus, every limb of Raghava thrilled and unique love surged in His heart. With a tight embrace, the Lord blessed His fulfilled servant.
