The Birth Festivals and Victory Songs of Sri Radha and Krishna
[753]
(Raga Bhimapalasi - Tala Kaharava)
Beyond all, free from all, yet the all, all-pervading and the support of all; all-pervading and the Self of all, Himself creation, creator and dissolution. Lord of Maya yet eternally untouched by Maya, Brahman, filled with Brahman and the ground of Brahman; beyond qualities, with qualities yet formless, eternally stainless, and the divine embodied Lord of qualities. Present in nature and all its transformations, manifest, the Purusha within nature, pervading the universe and formed as the universe; unchanging in essence and of one rasa, yet eternally the world filled with infinite variety. In the forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha He unfolds His play; Sarasvati, Lakshmi and Kali are His many endless manifest forms. Free from the bonds of place and time, yet present as place and time and beyond time; terrible in the form of Time, He forever sounds Time's fearsome songs of destruction. Eternal, infinite, boundless and transcendent, the supremely independent "Bhagavan Himself," He performs seemingly finite play that appears worldly, limited and governed by action. The source of every avatara, eternally the whole of which all others are portions, beginningless; the Lord of every lord, the sovereign of all worlds and the origin of all. Perfect in all sixteen powers, a concentrated mass of being and consciousness, endowed with the six divine opulences and magnanimous; unborn, imperishable, possessing a conscious divine body and eternally free from change. Filled with lila, Himself the lila and its witness, divine being, consciousness and bliss; the ocean of all the rasa of love, love embodied, freely distributing love. The great abode of countless inconceivable and seemingly opposed qualities, Lord Krishna, the incomparable treasury of divine majesty, appeared within the prison.

To protect the holy and deliver the deeply wicked, the Lord Himself assumed this divine avatara to establish dharma. To remove the terrible anguish of separation suffered by His loving devotees, the Lord, moved by His own pure will, appeared to establish the dharma of love. It was the dark eighth lunar day of Bhadra, under Rohini, the auspicious constellation of the Unborn One's birth; at midnight on Wednesday, an incomparable and joyous radiance spread everywhere. The time became supremely beautiful and endowed with every auspicious quality; the planets, stars and constellations at once became gentle and favorable. All directions grew serene, and stars filled the sky on every side. The cities, villages and Vrajas of the earth became boundless abodes of auspiciousness. The rivers flowed with perfectly clear water, and countless lotuses opened in the lakes at night. Trees were laden with blossoms, while cuckoos sang and bees began to hum. A cool, gentle, fragrant and sweet breeze flowed, pure and delightful to the touch. A wondrous spontaneous joy arose in the hearts of saints who opposed the asuras. Suddenly the celestial kettledrums sounded by themselves in heaven. Hearing of the birth of the Unborn, the gods rejoiced and their anguish disappeared. Kinnaras and pure Gandharvas began to sing, while Apsaras danced. Siddhas and Charanas offered praise, every truthful heart filled with delight. Gods, seers and sages began to extol the earth's immeasurable good fortune. Clouds went to the ocean's shore and gently thundered, pouring forth the essence of joy. The prison began to gleam as pure, comforting light spread through it. Every sorrowful particle of the dungeon seemed to break into a tender, gentle smile. The shackles and fetters of Vasudeva and Devaki opened at once. Beholding the wondrous Child, a supernatural mass of radiance, they were overwhelmed with bliss. He appeared in Vishnu's form with four arms, bearing the auspicious conch, mace, discus and lotus. A divine yellow garment adorned His beautiful dark-blue body. The Shrivatsa shone upon His chest, the Kaustubha gem at His throat, and His lotus eyes were immense. Supremely resplendent, He was a treasury of beauty and the most nectarean enchanter of the minds of gods, seers and sages.

His enchanting crown was adorned with jewels and beryl, and brilliant earrings graced His ears. The radiance from these ornaments illumined His boundless black curling hair. Tiny bells adorned His waist, and bracelets and armlets beautified His extraordinary arms. Vasudeva gazed upon the incomparable Lord with eyes filled with wonder and joy. Recognizing Him, he began to offer praise, his heart overflowing with supreme bliss. The Lord, the source of happiness, revealed their ancient relationship from previous births. Hearing Devaki's deeply compassionate plea as a mother terrified of Kamsa, the Lord became an infant and Himself said, "Carry Me to Gokula." Yogamaya, His own svarupa-shakti, assumed the pure guise of His younger sister. Through mother Yashoda's great good fortune, she appeared in Nanda's house in Gokula. Meanwhile every lock opened, and all the guards fell asleep, bereft of awareness. Taking his beloved Infant lovingly in his arms, father Vasudeva set out vigilantly. The Yamuna touched His feet and joyfully gave Vasudeva passage. He reached Nanda's house and found all its doors open and everyone asleep. He gently laid the Infant beside Yashoda, then, like one carrying a recovered treasure, took the girl and departed, sorrowful yet filled with joy. As soon as he returned to the prison, all its doors closed. The guards awoke upon hearing the infant cry, and one hurried to Kamsa's court. On hearing the news, Kamsa rushed there like a madman, sword in hand. He arrived and seized the girl, his mind filled with immense astonishment. Unable to understand how the child could be a girl, the sinner grasped her hand and ruthlessly dashed her against the stone. Devaki kept weeping, but the girl effortlessly flew into the sky. Manifesting as an eight-armed goddess bearing weapons, she terrified him and said: "Fool! The hero who will kill you has already been born. What will you gain by killing me? Be calm and do not slaughter children." Meanwhile an immeasurable current of supreme bliss began to flow through Nanda's home. Everyone plunged into it in ecstasy, abandoning the limits of convention.

Life of Vraja, treasure of the cows' and gopis' happiness, beloved son of Nanda and Yashoda; the cowherd boys' supreme treasure, pure servant and protector of the cows and calves, Gopala. He grazes the cows, sanctifies forest after forest and befriends the forest creatures in many delightful ways. Forever absorbed in play with His young companions, He appears like an ordinary child. Deliverer of asuras, subduer of Kaliya, destroyer of the wicked and eternal embodiment of happiness; crusher of Indra's pride, dispeller of Brahma's delusion, remover of His people's sorrow, of incomparable beauty. Filled with rasa, stealing the eyes and the sages' minds, with black curling hair upon His head; holder of the flute and the peacock-feather crown, lifter of the mountain, clad as the ever-new master dancer. Enjoyer of the rasa dance and the forest bowers, stealing heart and treasure, King of Vraja; the rasika, ocean of rasa, thirsting and eager for rasa, distributing rasa as Rasaraja. Enchanting the gopis' minds, delighting the gopis, the very life of the gopis; Radha's beloved, the lover of Radhika, His love for Radha beyond measure. Worshiped by Radha and Himself worshiping Radhika, eternally non-different from the principle of Radhika; yet eternally retaining distinct selfhood so that He may relish the nectar-rasa of loving lila. An infinite ocean of ever-new beauty, divine sweetness and nectarean rasa; His infinite, eternally attractive form surges with ever-new waves of bliss. Sweet, sweetest, His fresh-raincloud body, blue Shyamasundara with a golden radiance; His lila is sweet and sweetest, His rasa-dance supremely pure, the greatest attainment of life. He went to Mathura and delivered the intoxicated Mushtika, Chanura, Kamsa and Kuvalaya; He freed His father and mother and repeatedly bowed at their feet. Reassuring and comforting them, He enthroned Ugrasena; He Himself became a servant, steadfast in His pure and desireless disposition. Completing His Mathura lila, He went to Dvaraka. By slaying them, He liberated the many asuras who had seized kingdoms.

The supremely wise Lord then went to Indraprastha and met His kinsmen, the Pandavas. Upon Kurukshetra's battlefield He proclaimed the divine wisdom of the Gita. He Himself embodied and revealed the Mahabhava-filled form of Radha, the incomparable disposition of divine love and supreme renunciation, unattainable even to seers and sages. Without renunciation there is no love, and without love there can never be bliss. Through the divine love of Radha and the gopis, the source of bliss taught this truth. Through the Gita He taught the destruction of hope for reward, selfish attachment, desire, hatred, possessiveness, ego and pride, together with surrender to the Lord and equanimity of heart. The Supreme Lord, beyond both elation and resentment, assumed human form and demonstrated this teaching by His own supremely exemplary conduct. At once rasika and detached, enjoyer and renunciant, apparently stern yet an abode of compassion; master of Maya yet utterly simple, householder and renunciant, gathering all yet infinitely generous. Active and wise, intensely engaged yet eternally withdrawn, both qualified and beyond qualities; full of affection yet utterly free from mine-ness, enchanting yet unattached, wondrous in form. Eternally the embodiment of perfect equality, established in His own nature, this is His eternal disposition. That true principle is never absent anywhere or in any manner. Beyond both the perishable and imperishable, He is the complete Person, Purushottama Himself. Lord of nature, He manifests through His own Maya to remove sorrow and anguish. Having given the supreme divine teachings of gopi-love and the Gita's wisdom, He commanded everyone to practice them with faith. This is the supreme fruit and essence of the Janmashtami festival: may we surrender with faith and attain it according to our capacity.

Krishna's body, blue as a fresh raincloud, is supremely enchanting, a charming and blessed treasury of beauty that enthralls the three worlds. He is incomparably anointed with liquid musk, saffron, sandalwood and fragrant unguents; every limb is conscious and divine, filled with splendor and supremely beautiful.

The peerless jewel of His nose puts the parrot's beak to shame. Seeing the mass of Krishna's curling hair, whole swarms of bees feel ashamed. Upon His head are a topknot, peacock feathers and a brilliant jeweled crown; His two lovely ears sparkle with karnika flowers and earrings. His arched brows and clear pair of eyes resemble fully opened lotuses. His posture is graceful, His threefold-bending form lovely, His waist beautifully curved. His yellow garment flashes like lightning; His teeth are radiant and His lips crimson. His face is cheerful, His smile sweet, and His hand holds the sweet flute. Ever a devotee of His devotees and a servant eager to bless His devotees, He is a rasika of love, intent on relishing the nectar of rasa-filled prema. Beloved of Vraja, friend, master and servant of Vraja's people, their body, mind and wealth; son of Nanda and Yashoda, the very life of the young women of Vraja. Setting aside all displays of divinity, absolute sovereignty and lordship, He freely assumes His self-willed two-armed body solely for the happiness of Vraja's people. On the dark eighth day of Bhadra, an incomparable Wednesday, under the auspicious Rohini constellation, in the most blessed middle of the night, He appeared as the beloved son of Shri Nanda and Yashoda, becoming everyone's intimate own so that He might bestow His very self.

(Raga Vasanta - Tala Kaharava)
Today the birth of the Unborn and Imperishable One has made the day supremely auspicious. The beautiful Lord appeared in cruel Kamsa's prison and in Nanda's home. He alone is the supremely independent and mighty Lord of all worlds, yet He became dependent upon His devotees and appeared as Bhagavan conquered by devotion. He played many village games with the cowherd boys, grazed cows and calves through forest after forest, and befriended the wild creatures. He plundered yogurt and stole butter, raising a thoroughly innocent uproar. He teased everyone wonderfully, drawing them all into ever-new lilas.

By slaying demons and titans, He effortlessly delivered them. Holding Govardhana on His little finger, He destroyed Indra's pride. Playing His sweet flute, He enchanted everyone and stole the treasure of their hearts. He drank the forest fire, subdued Kaliya and removed Vraja's terrible calamity. After eating clay, He revealed the unfathomable universe within His mouth to His mother. Wonderstruck, she tasted delight, and ever-new sources of happiness arose. By stealing the gopis' garments, He sanctified the removal of all coverings. Through the Mahārāsa He wondrously established the divinity filled with the rasa of love. Reaching Mathura, He auspiciously delivered the washerman and Kubja. He slew Kuvalaya and destroyed the wrestlers Mushtika and Chanura. After killing the sinful and cruel Kamsa, He gave the kingdom to Ugrasena. Then Rasaraja performed many lilas of wisdom and divine power. He effortlessly subdued Kalayavana and humbled Jarasandha's pride. Madhava went to dwell in Dvaraka and duly celebrated eight marriages. After slaying Bhaumasura, He returned with sixteen thousand royal maidens, fulfilled their longing and took each one's hand in His own auspicious hand. By slaying Shishupala in the Pandava king's assembly, He effortlessly blessed him. Accepting the first worship, He raised Yudhishthira's honor high. On the Pandava-Kaurava battlefield He imparted the Gita's wisdom to Arjuna, the great guiding light that dispels the sin and darkness of every world. Granting Arjuna exclusive refuge, He eternally accepted him as His own. Arjuna then assumed a divine body in the divine realm and serves there without change. Such is the Lord of all, beyond all, pervading all and supporting all, ever free from material qualities and the abode of hosts of auspicious qualities. He is the ocean of the nectar of all rasa, the eternal treasury of beauty and supreme sweetness. Supremely independent yet conquered by love, He accepts His devotee as His own beloved. Moment by moment He increases love and forever grants ever-new rasa. Eternally fulfilled, He continually relishes fresh rasa and drinks its nectar.

At all times keep remembering sweet, enchanting and auspicious Shri Radha-Madhava. Remain absorbed in that constant remembrance and be blessed at every moment.

That prison was dark Kamsa's sinful emblem of tamas. It was a black dungeon appointed with dark-hearted guards. It was Wednesday, the dark eighth lunar day of Bhadra's waning fortnight. The night was black and blind, covered by unfathomably dense darkness. Now the unborn and imperishable Lord of all would assume His auspicious avatara, taking nature as His ground in the night and unfolding His own Maya. At that very moment cool divine light suddenly filled the chamber. Everything changed in an instant, and nature began to smile gently. The time became supremely beautiful and endowed with every auspicious quality. The moon stood in Rohini, while the planets and constellations in the sky were peaceful. The directions grew pure and stars began to glitter in the heavens. The rivers ran with clear water, and lotuses bloomed in the lakes at night. Trees were laden with blossoms, and birds and bees burst into song and humming. A supremely pure, fragrant breeze began to flow, bringing happiness to all. The hearts of virtuous people opposed to the asuras suddenly became naturally and freely joyful. Celestial kettledrums sounded in heaven in the bliss of the Unborn One's birth. Unstruck, they resounded by themselves at midnight. Joyful Kinnaras and Gandharvas began their melodies. Vidyadharis and Apsaras danced to exceedingly sweet rhythms. The gods and sages rejoiced and offered praise, beholding the earth's immense good fortune.

The ocean and clouds began to sing their own joy in gentle, sweet voices. Beautiful and sweet Bhagavan Himself appeared from Devaki's womb. He arose like the full moon complete in all sixteen phases rising in the east; not a trace of darkness or pain remained for the saints. He who illumines even blackness assumed that wondrous dark complexion. Seeing Purushottama before them, the couple themselves stood astonished. His soft, long, nectarean lotus eyes enchant the sages' minds. His four mighty arms shone with the conch, mace, lotus and discus. The exceedingly beautiful Shrivatsa mark graced His chest. The splendid radiance of the Kaustubha gem at His throat streamed forth. His pure and lovely body, dark as a fresh raincloud, gleamed. An exquisite divine yellow garment shone upon His beautiful form. His radiant crown and earrings were fashioned from priceless jewels and beryl. Their splendor made His curling locks shine like rays of the sun. A beautiful divine jeweled girdle, a treasury of grace, adorned His waist. Armlets beautified His arms, and auspicious bracelets graced His hands. Every limb was ornamented, and brilliance spread on every side. Beholding His form, Vasudeva and Devaki were immersed in incomparable bliss.

Pure being, consciousness and bliss, transcendent Parabrahman in the form of Parameshvara; beyond all yet pervading all, beyond qualities yet with qualities, both manifest and unmanifest, incomparable. Eternally unborn yet assuming divine birth, eternally independent yet becoming dependent; Himself the one controller of all, He makes Himself the instrument of His lovers. The natural abode of seemingly contradictory qualities, He performs many wondrous lilas. Becoming both foe and friend, He upholds and protects the dharma of love. He embodies the rasas of fury, heroism, disgust, fear, compassion, laughter, wonder and love, as well as peace and every other rasa.

He appeared as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki in the wicked king's prison, then joyfully accepted infancy to give happiness to Nanda and Yashoda. With the cowherd boys He wandered freely through forest after forest, and in every way embraced the gopis' sweet divine rasa. Moved by spontaneous grace, He went to Mathura and slew Kamsa, then respectfully and immediately freed His father and mother from bondage. After duly honoring Nanda and the others, He sent them home, conveying His supremely sweet love to the cowherd men and women. Hearing the compassionate prayer of Krishnaa (Draupadi), He became her garment and preserved her honor. Duhshasana sat exhausted and ashamed while the entire assembly remained astonished. In Mathura and Dvaravati the Lord showered immeasurable bliss, expanding pure lilas filled with sweetness and supreme divine majesty. On the battlefield He dispelled His friend Partha's delusion by giving His wisdom. Granting refuge with ease, He blessed him further with the gift of divine love. Through Arjuna as the occasion, He gave the whole world a divine and purifying teaching. He then gave Uddhava His detailed, wholly auspicious message. Wisdom, yoga, detachment, love, rati and pure action free from every desire; Sankhya, renunciation, sannyasa, varnashrama and all the duties of a pure human being; this world and the next, father and son, husband and wife, guru and disciple, dharma and right conduct; surrendering one's life for cows, brahmanas, vulnerable women and orphans, every auspicious undertaking. In every direction He eternally gives the brightest wisdom to every person. He removes all sorrow, grief, fear and darkness and ordains happiness and welfare. Forgetting distinctions between worthy and unworthy, He always protects everyone. In every land and every age, He forever brings the supreme welfare of all.

The moon Krishna has risen in beautiful Nanda's house. The night lotuses of every heart have opened, and the temples of their hearts rejoice. Refrain. The ocean of bliss surged up, abandoning every shore. All the ghats and pathways of people's hearts were swiftly submerged. Children and elders, young men and women, all lost ordinary awareness. Intoxicated by color and melody, they washed away shame and reserve. 1. No one noticed where anyone was, and no one tried to understand. Hearts filled with bliss struggled in the battle of affection. All order broke as they leapt and bounded in boundless delight. Everyone sang as the heart desired, inventing rhythms and melodies. 2. Those skilled in dance, song and art danced and sang His virtues. They quickly stole every heart and delighted everyone. Court singers and bards all sang together in harmony. Every heart filled with joy on attaining the fruit of life. 3. The beautiful women of Vraja came splendidly adorned, carrying earthen pots filled with milk, yogurt and butter. A holy river of butter, yogurt and milk began to flow. Mothers hurried to lift the children who were sinking in it. 4. Every heart and every person, intoxicated with bliss, began to dance. Young men and women, children and elders, all forgot body and mind. Brahma, Shiva, Indra, the gods and sages danced, abandoning awareness. Upananda, Nanda and Bhanu danced without embarrassment. 5. Bathing in a river of milk mixed with turmeric, yogurt and saffron, they were blessed, having received forms drenched in the nectar of affection. Kettledrums sounded abundantly in the sky and the gods showered flowers. The gods envied Gokula's fortune and longed to share it. 6.

He longed to throw himself at the Child's feet and at once place their dust upon his head. Before him stood transcendent Brahman Himself, Shri Jagadisha, sovereign of all worlds.

"Since He Himself has forgotten all majesty and rests as an infant in His mother's lap, why should I not lift Him at once, embrace Him and joyfully kiss His face? But if I, an elderly brahmana and acharya of the family, touch His feet, everyone will laugh and call me mad, and some minds will take offense. If I press this beautiful Infant to my heart in overflowing delight, the elders will think me frivolous and mock me. Yet my patience is failing, and all thought and deliberation are slipping away." Just then Mohana smiled and at once expanded His Maya. Garga's pride in his lineage awoke; forgetting everything, he began the prescribed rites. Yet the Infant's irresistible attraction did not leave his mind even in the least.

Shri Radha is Madhava and Shri Madhava is Radha; both are one form, one principle of being, consciousness and bliss, one incomparable bhava and rasa. As milk and its whiteness, fire and its burning power, the sun and its radiance are eternally inseparable, They nevertheless perform lovely, apparently distinct lilas filled with bhava and rasa. Radha is transcendent Prakriti, untouched, Krishna's own form and Krishna's delight; Krishna's very self, the embodiment of love for Krishna, with Krishna as Her life. She is formed solely of longing for Krishna's happiness and performs endless lila. She is the presiding Goddess of love, the supreme primordial power and crown of the queens of rasa. The embodiment of supreme delight, blessed and honored, She is the highest and greatest ideal. She bestows bliss even upon Krishna, the eternal ocean of bliss. She defeats the pride of all beauty and virtue and selflessly steals Krishna's heart. Eternally filled with incomparable dignity, She completely forgets Her own greatness. Praised and worshiped by Krishna, dwelling generously upon Krishna's breast, She remains wholly absorbed in worshiping Krishna and eternally sports only for His happiness.

Eternally conscious svarupa-shakti, eternally unborn and the support of all, the womb-free primordial Prakriti assumes an avatara according to Her own will. She eternally sports in divine Goloka, endowed with the virtues of Her own true nature. Today, filled with beauty, She became the sweet and enchanting "Daughter of Vrishabhanu." Her eternal body bears incomparable beauty and peerless pure sweetness. Without change, She attracts the heart of Shri Krishna, the attractor of all. Everywhere pure and utterly free from even the scent or conception of a trace of desire for Her own happiness, She is the crown of chaste women, the living embodiment of total renunciation, supremely wondrous. That auspicious and fortunate embodiment of Mahabhava appeared today. The earth's pure and rare good fortune spontaneously awoke. Therefore let all of us joyfully celebrate this great festival today. Let us offer ourselves to Her who granted us this meeting. May the Divine Couple accept us in the form of Their servants. From the heart and with unrestrained voices, proclaim victory to Radha-Madhava!

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)
The glory born from Kirti's womb is incomparable in the world; no other glory equals it, for from her appeared Madhava's eternal beloved, the crown of all. No one's fame anywhere in the world equals that of King Vrishabhanu, who became father to Radha, before whose love Bhagavan Himself is helpless. That earth became blessed, and the small village of Ravala was glorified, for Queen Radhika, the abode of happiness for the One formed of being and consciousness, appeared there. Blessed are the sun and moon, and blessed the holy fire, wind, pure water and sky, all of which were fortunate enough to behold Radha's unfolding manifestation. Blessed are the people, animals, birds, all creatures moving crosswise, insects and moths who ever saw even one limb of Radha, the giver of happiness to Shyama. Blessed are we today, for we have been able to sing the virtues of Shyama's Mistress. Blessed are those listening and joining their own voices to these songs.

Today immense bliss has spread through Vrishabhanu's house. Radha has descended, delighting every heart. Kettledrums began to sound in the sky and flowers began to rain. All the townspeople hurried to behold the princess. Joyful women sang auspicious songs with festive enthusiasm, bringing lovely gifts as they came to Kirti's palace. Old people, youths and children danced; everyone became a dancer. Blessed melodies arose from their mouths. Knowing that Radha had been born, all lovers hurried there, their hearts hoping for a rain of the nectar of love. Without Radha, who could steal the heart of Him who steals the sages' minds? Without Her appearance, who could become a vessel for the cloud of bliss-rasa? The Krishna cloud will rain after finding Radha as its vessel; then the holy current of rasa will flow without obstruction. Gods, sages and seers, Shiva and Brahma came there in many disguises to behold and touch the princess's lotus feet. Nanda and Yashoda came, intensely delighted at heart, bringing many jewels, pearls and gems as gifts. Entering the birthing chamber, the queen took the little princess in her arms, kissed Her with deep affection and delight and offered herself again and again. The two mothers embraced with immeasurable affection of body and mind. The way of love in their meeting cannot be expressed in a few words. Nanda and Vrishabhanu embraced heart to heart. Joy spread everywhere, and Nanda's lap was filled.

Radha, the mine of supreme love, appeared in King Vrishabhanu's palace. Bhagavan Himself is eternally enchanted by Her pure divine sweetness. Her ever-new conscious form increases in beauty at every moment. She rains rasa, attracts Rasaraja and incomparably delights Her beloved's heart. The eternal Mistress of the bowers and of the rasa dance, the most holy sovereign of Hari's heart, She is dearer to Her beloved than life, the ruler of His life and eternally enchanting to His mind. Removing the impurity of lust, She expands pure divine love filled with renunciation. Mistress of incomparable majesty, She is nevertheless deeply humble and naturally modest. She spontaneously and unceasingly gives Her beloved immeasurable happiness, yet never remembers that She has given anything and never feels pride. Stealing the clever Lord's heart, She spreads the pure and egoless mood of service. Her longing to serve Her beloved naturally and continually increases. Therefore Shri Krishna, eternally perfect, fulfilled and free from desire, eternally longs to relish Radha's rasa. For within it Radha's absolute and holy renunciation is complete; free from any conception of Her own happiness, She fixes all Her love upon Her beloved. That Radha, love embodied, appeared today in Barsana. Therefore all nature has adorned itself beautifully to welcome Her. Cries of victory resound throughout every world and realm. Incomparable supreme bliss pervades all, yet no one is satisfied with its measure. The supreme bliss of the heart cannot be expressed in any way. There are no words or signs by which that unrestricted joy can be revealed.

Vrishabhanu came to meet him, and Narada spoke gently: "We came from Haripura after hearing the joyous news that Princess Shri Radha has appeared from Kirti's womb, fulfilling every hope and removing fear and every obstacle. Please let us behold the princess at once." Bhanu immediately sent him inside the palace. The moment Narada saw Her, he became absorbed and forgot body and mind. The rasa of supreme bliss spread, and his heart blossomed. He offered many kinds of praise and then circumambulated Her. He placed the dust of the princess's feet upon his head. Coming outside, he said, "Most fortunate Vrishabhanu! The princess's rare and boundless grace has awakened upon you. She who has appeared in your house is the sovereign Mistress, Hari's beloved Hladini, formed of being, consciousness and bliss." Playing tender notes upon his vina, he sang sweetly again and again. Auspicious instruments sound today in Vrishabhanu's house. The beauty-filled princess has appeared, the very adornment of dark Shyama's happiness. All the beautiful women walk along singing sweet and nectarean songs. Every auspicious vessel is decorated and every heart filled with love. One says, "Only Nanda's boy belongs to Her. She will give Her beloved immeasurably great happiness." "Blessed is our fortune," another smiling woman says. "We too shall gain the joy of seeing and touching this enchanting Girl." Cowherds carry pots filled with yogurt and butter upon their heads. All arrive in splendid beauty, showering the produce of the cows. Shiva, Brahma, Indra, Sanaka, Narada and other saints have all come in secret, praising Kirti within their hearts.

Today a vast crowd has gathered at Vrishabhanu's door. The treasure of rasa has surged beyond its own banks. Cowherd men and women, children and elders abandoned wealth and home. As if irresistibly drawn, all came, forgetting their household work. They carried trays filled with yogurt, unbroken rice, sacred grass, turmeric and vermilion. Countless people assembled, each beautifully adorned. Every woman and man danced, abandoning all shame. They splashed yogurt and turmeric and raised a thunderous sound of bliss.

His old wife came walking beside him, her heart so joyful that she danced and smiled. Youth shone through her aged body as boundless delight spread. Boys and girls, sons' wives and daughters-in-law sang blessings in sweet voices: "May the princess live for hundreds of thousands of ages and receive Shyama as Her husband." "Today we shall receive shawls and wraps, diamonds, emeralds and pearl necklaces, gleaming ornaments of gold and gifts enough for hands and feet." Today everyone's cherished wish has been fulfilled, from the least to the greatest, men and women alike. They will go about richly adorning themselves, bearing loads of jewels.

Entering the palace, she respectfully met Kirti. Victory! Auspicious congratulations! When Queen Kirtida saw Yashoda, her heart filled with intense delight. She lifted the little girl in her own hands and laid Her in Yashoda's lap. Gazing at Her radiant moonlike face, Yashoda blossomed in the rasa of bliss. She remained staring without blinking and suddenly lost all awareness of her body. When awareness returned, she felt shy. Victory! Then she clasped the princess to her heart. Victory! She offered jewels and wealth over Her. Victory! Yet she was not satisfied in the least. Victory! The radiant woman understood the desire of her heart. Victory! She bestowed hundreds of thousands of blessings. Victory! Kirtida honored her. Victory! Yashoda experienced immense happiness. Victory! Auspicious congratulations! The cowherd men came dancing with Nanda, making merry. They sang crooked, playful melodies and raised a tumult all along the road. They made wondrous gestures, all intoxicated with rasa, bliss and delight. Casting aside reserve and hesitation, they sang songs full of laughter. They reached Barsana. Victory! They began to rain down butter. Victory! They carried pots of yogurt and butter. Victory! They performed graceful antics. Victory! They made a stream of butter flow. Victory! It filled all Barsana. Victory! Everyone came and met together. Victory! All became embodiments of bliss. Victory! Auspicious congratulations! Manasukha, Dhanasukha, Bala, Toka, Madhumangala, Dama and Madara were there. Blessed is the hour, blessed the month of Bhadra. Blessed is the eighth lunar day, the bright fortnight and the radiance of the Abhijit constellation. In that hour appeared the sovereign of the world, Hari's eternal beloved and the root of all happiness. Light filled the sky of every heart, and the piercing pain of the threefold afflictions vanished. Pure happiness spread through every home and auspicious rites were performed in every home. All women and men dressed beautifully and sang and danced in boundless enthusiasm. King Bhanu, immersed in supreme happiness, gave innumerable gems and gold in charity. Supremely generous, he scattered wealth and grain, wisely seeking the happiness of his lovely daughter. Birds, deer, bees, serpents and every creature forgot themselves in bliss. Their hearts experienced supreme joy, and even inert trees and vines blossomed out of season. A gentle, fragrant wind blew through the sky, clear and cooling, with boundless radiance. Nature blossomed in every direction today, beholding the new descent of primal Nature Herself. She has come to purify the world and give extraordinary joy to the reservoir of happiness. Impure desire abandoned its stain and was transformed into holy, love-filled longing. Celebrate the festival, sing and dance today, abandoning every trace of pride and vanity. Share congratulations with everyone and cry together, "Victory to Kirti! Victory to Vrishabhanu!"

Meanwhile Nanda's host arrived, bringing what seemed a whole market of butter and yogurt. Joyful cries arose in the yogurt revel as pot after pot began to overturn. A river of butter and yogurt surged, and a stream of nectar and bliss flowed. King Bhanu and Baba Nanda began to dance together, abandoning every trace of shame. Toka and Sudama came and joined the boys of Barsana and Raval, along with Rainda, Painda and all the cowherd boys, Madhumangala, Manasukha and Sukharama. Leaping again and again, they all began to dance in the river of butter and yogurt. Intoxicated with joy, they scooped up lumps of butter and hurled them at one another. The delighted people of Barsana cried, "Victory to Nanda Baba!" The people of Nandishvara answered, "Victory to King Vrishabhanu!"

The embodiment of love for the urbane Dancer has appeared in the sacred land of Barsana, and every shadow of Maya has withdrawn. No one's obstruction can stop the river of the nectar-rasa of Radha's love. That unobstructed stream of immortal rasa flows toward Hari and never wanders elsewhere. Those attached to Hari's feet and detached from sense objects plunged into it and drank its rasa. Adorned as cowherd men and women, they came carrying pots of yogurt and butter on their heads. They began to behold Her and offered heaps upon heaps of ornaments and cloth. Beautiful rows of festoons, banana pillars and auspicious water pots shone. The elder women blessed Her with unwavering marital good fortune, while the young women laughed and playfully rocked their pots. Singing and dancing, everyone forgot themselves and naturally cast aside shame and reserve.

Radha is Vrishabhanu's darling, Radha is Shri Kirti's daughter; She is equally the life of both. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" What abides in Madhava's mind also abides in Radha's; the Two possess one mind. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" Radha is utterly innocent, while Madhava is enchanting and honey-sweet; the manner of both is unique. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" When Radha becomes completely wise, Madhava pretends to know nothing; these are two ways of recognizing Them. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" Radha and Madhava are one form, though They assume different forms in divine play; both are the one Bhagavan. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" Radha is Madhava's Maya, and Madhava is Radha's shadow; They are shadow and the possessor of Maya. Cry, "Victory to Radha!"

Radha is Madhava's beloved, and Madhava steals Radha's heart; each is the other's very life. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" Whatever comes into Radha's heart delights Madhava; the judgment of both is the same. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" Radha delights only in what arises in Madhava's heart; know that the Two share one mind. Cry, "Victory to Radha!" May the pair Radha-Madhava live for hundreds of thousands of ages; may both be supremely happy. Cry, "Victory to Radha!"

(Rasiya tune - Tala Kaharava)
Keep reciting "Radhe, Radhe"; keep repeating "Radhe, Radhe." Beloved prince of the king of Vraja, keep worshiping "Radhe, Radhe." Refrain. Even Brahma and Tripurari do not know the immense glory of this Vraja, where Nanda's prince appeared. Keep reciting "Radhe, Radhe." 1. Here Rohini and Yashoda are mothers, Balarama is an affectionate brother, and Nanda Baba lavishes love. Keep worshiping "Radhe, Radhe." 2. Here countless beloved friends play in ever-new ways, amid limitless herds of cows. Keep repeating "Radhe, Radhe." 3. Here is the beautiful town of Barsana, Mother Kirti and Father Vrishabhanu, where Radha, the essence of happiness, appeared. Keep reciting "Radhe, Radhe." 4. Radha is a mass of condensed bliss; without Radha, Mohana is only half complete. Radha alone is the essence of life. Keep worshiping "Radhe, Radhe." 5. Radha is Madhava's very Self, and by Radha's power Hari is the Self of all. She is the irresistible supreme potency. Keep repeating "Radhe, Radhe." 6. Radha embodies mahabhava, an unfathomable ocean of the bliss of love. With Radha He sports eternally. Keep reciting "Radhe, Radhe." 7.
