[417]

(Rāga Bhūpālī - Tāla Kaharavā)

Sweet Waves of the Ocean of Love

[417]

(Raga Bhupali - Tala Kaharava)

Her life cried out in anguish to meet the Beloved. She neither counted the road's distance nor feared anything. Distraught yet fearless, she set out unthinking into the trackless forest. Every pain and hardship of the road became provisions and delightful food. She looked nowhere else and feared no one. She fell for no temptation and desired nothing. At every step and moment, she sighed in dear remembrance of the Beloved. She moved toward her unwavering goal, living dead within the world. The sense of "mine" toward every object vanished, and attachment to the world disappeared. No hatred for anyone remained; stainless detachment awakened in the mind. Every desire for sense objects ended, and no share of false ego remained. All possessiveness, belonging and exclusive love rested at the Lord's feet. She naturally forgot body, mind, enjoyment, heaven and freedom from rebirth. Drawn by the Beloved's attraction, she reached His court. With the honeyed stream of love's nectar, she bathed the Beloved's lotus feet. As though unconscious, she fell irresistibly at those conscious feet. The treasure of her life arose, lifted her and, overcome with love, enclosed her in His arms. He pressed her to His breast, and a pure stream of tears flowed. Placing His tender hand upon her head, the treasure of her life gazed upon her sweetly. Then with nectar-sweet words He offered her a gracious welcome. Receiving His rare vision and touch and hearing her Beloved's loving speech, the ocean of bliss surged, raising limitless, immeasurable waves. She became blessed, and all the heat of separation's fire vanished forever. The Lord Himself placed her in the honeyed temple within the realm of His heart.

(Lavani Tune - Tala Kaharava)

Now nothing pleases me; You alone delight my heart. Today my heart leaps up to meet You. I writhe like a fish without water, so why do You make me pine? Why delay showing me Your face and torment me further? But if Your heart is pleased by this very thing, I have no objection, however much sorrow comes to me. I am happy through Your happiness, while my life weeps for You. Beloved, do not plant a thorn in Your own happiness for my sake. Yet know this with certainty: my life longs to meet You. Moment after moment it grows distraught, for the pull of Your vision is immense. It would break its bonds and flee, heeding no one's restraint. All eight watches it wanders as though airborne, regarding every blink as loss. Yet, dear One, my heart is eternally pleased by Your pleasure. Dearer than life, You alone are the treasure of my life in both worlds. If we do not meet, that is Your will, yet body and mind are offered to You. You alone are society and scripture to me; You alone are my supreme jewel. Like the cataka bird, I shall wait forever and never turn my face away. Though You give pain, strike me and make me writhe, I shall not break my love. Though You torment me and take my life, I shall not abandon You. I shall not glance elsewhere; I join my life to You alone.

[419]

(Raga Kafi - Tina Tala)

Immense love overflowed within the gopi's heart. Abandoning all family shame and worldly convention, she set forth.

Continuation of [419]

She became mad, her eyes unblinking and her curly hair disheveled. She retained no awareness of mind, body or garments; who could arrange her attire? She wandered like one deeply intoxicated, possessing no outward consciousness. Again and again she stopped and cried through a choked throat, "Ah Beloved, abode of my life!" Then she danced and laughed enchantingly: "The Lord of my life has come!" Saying this, she stretched out her arms to catch Him, overwhelmed by supreme love. Failing to find Him, she drew back her arms and fell helpless upon the earth. At once the heart-enchanting Lord, dearer than the gopis' lives, arrived. He lifted her, placed her head in His lap and fanned her with His garment. She recovered awareness, immense bliss filled her heart, and she met Him with outstretched arms.

[420]

(Raga Kalingada - Tina Tala)

When I heard the supremely sweet and captivating name Krishna, crown jewel of my Beloved, my heart immediately filled with nectar-rasa and has remained an abode of happiness ever since. From that moment I forgot every sweet and bitter name in the moving and unmoving world. The lovely resonance of Krishna's name resounds delightfully in every direction and at every time. All shame and convention of scripture and society honored by the virtuous disappeared. My heart melted, streams flowed from my eyes and the pure Name remained enthroned upon my lips. No awareness of speaking or acting remained, and I cannot understand what this illness is. The rasa of Krishna's name creates ever-new separation and union within my heart. Sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes weep and sometimes cry out piteously. Again and again it makes me conscious and unconscious, sometimes silent and sometimes screaming. What shall I do, and where shall I go now to find the life of my life? Friend, let me meet Him to my heart's content and at once gain deliverance from sorrow. Her companion consoled Her: "Listen, Radha, hold firm within Your heart. Krishna Himself will meet You and immediately remove all Your heart's pain." At that very moment Hari, Radha's Beloved and foundation of love, suddenly appeared. Overwhelmed, Radha fell at His feet; He immediately lifted Her and enclosed Her in His arms.

(Raga Jaijaiwanti - Tina Tala)

Listen, friend, what a condition has befallen me since I sweetly heard the enchanting resonance of Krishna's name. Wondrous nectar filled my heart, and from that nectar a fire arose. Its burning can be calmed only by attaining You and the nectar of Your vision. My heart writhes constantly and finds no peace by day or night. Life has no essence without blessed union with the sapphire Beloved. Friend, take me as a gracious messenger to where Madhava, the possessor of the Name, dwells. I shall not forget this kindness for even a moment but remain gratefully indebted.

[422]

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

Then a sweet wound struck my heart when the messenger spoke of His form and character, which are a festival for women. Since then the wound has remained fresh, friend, and its pain grows every moment. I have become utterly impatient to behold the beauty of that form and character. He shines like a fresh rain cloud; lovely Natavara wears a peacock feather upon His head. The sweet flute adorns His lips, and He is a treasury of conscious bliss. His smile is gentle, His eyes and brows charmingly curved and His dark hair thick and curling. Lightning-colored cloth adorns His body, whose attire enchants gods and sages. A jeweled girdle encircles His waist, anklets ring upon His feet and gunja and forest garlands adorn His neck. Friend, how may I behold that rasa-filled form at once? Otherwise this pang will never end and the wound will never dry. Within terrible pain, the happiness of remembrance continually increases my longing.

[423]

(Raga Nata - Tina Tala)

Court bards came singing His virtues. Their hearts filled with joy, they described the Beloved Mohana's lovely virtues and form in many ways. No poet anywhere could find any comparison for that incomparable treasury of the nectar of form and virtue. Describing His many wondrous and stainless qualities, they increased everyone's delight. Seeing those fortunate bards shower the sweetest rasa, a fire of love appeared within my heart and burned desire and attachment to enjoyment. The moment I heard of the treasury of sweet form and virtue, I brought Him into my heart. Establishing sole sovereignty over my mind, the Beloved came to dwell there, smiling and making me smile. Since then, friend, I have become mad and retain no awareness of doing or causing anything. When will the treasure of my life meet me and make my heart delightful with His rasa-filled heart?

[424]

(Raga Divya Hindola - Tina Tala)

That day I heard a companion sing His virtues: "The king of rasikas, treasury of rasa, is full of color, form, rasa and glory." From that day the embodiment of sweetness, the treasury of joy, has dwelt within my heart. While walking and eating, sleeping and waking, not a moment's interruption occurs. Friend, everything you say is for my good, and you forever desire my welfare. Yet I am helpless; no awareness remains and attention to the world is gone. I have forgotten society, scripture, convention, family attachment and reputation. My heart is desperate to meet Him, and each moment passes like an age. Friend, I desire no liberation and possess no awareness or fear of hell. Now let me fearlessly meet dear Syama, singing aloud and beating the drum.

[425]

(Raga Patadipa - Tina Tala)

Hearing Syama's stainless virtues, the gopi forgot body, wealth and everything else. Syama's virtues stole her mind, and she was sold to Him without price.

Continuation of [425]

Mohana, treasury of rasa, is filled with color, rasa and virtues. He made her wholly inactive, mad and beyond both sorrow and happiness. Sometimes she wept, laughed or lamented bitterly; sometimes she danced or remained silent. Sometimes the wise Lady, immersed in feeling, described the rasa of love in many ways. Sometimes she spoke incoherently and raved at length, beside herself. The gopi's condition became wondrous as she merged into the ocean of love. She is the embodiment of supreme love in purva-raga, honored within the Beloved's heart. Blessed, blessed is the rasa-filled gopi, a natural giver of divine love.

[426]

(Raga Kafi - Mula Tala)

Suddenly hearing that sweet note, I went mad. Love's arrow pierced me and wounded my heart. A lovely, sweet pang filled me with rasa and feeling. Every pride disappeared and every fever left. Attachment to enjoyment vanished, and no inclination remained. Surrender became open and uncovered, without concealment. The mind's course became straight and found no resting place. Fear, sorrow and shame ceased to exist. An indelible and immeasurable longing for union awoke. Friend, unite me with Madhava quickly now!

[427]

(Raga Malakaunsa - Tina Tala)

My mind departed, abandoning everything. Hearing the flute's sweet melody, immense love surged within it. Steeped in the nectar-rasa of His lips, it sang a supremely sweet raga. Sweet divine rasa filled my heart, and detachment covered the moving and unmoving world. Through it, sorrow, delusion, intoxication, shame, pride and fear fled. All possessiveness, desire and demand for enjoyment or liberation disappeared.

(Raga Kalinjada - Tina Tala)

From the day the flute's melody entered and merged into my ears, I became mad and was sold into the Beloved's hands. Nothing pleases or attracts me, nor do I think of home. I do not fear fame or infamy; my reason has become utterly feeble. Night and day that flute's raga circles within my mind. Meeting the flute-player, I attained my natural good fortune. In every way I have become possessionless; nothing remains with me. The snare of love binds me to Mohana, flute-bearing Madho.

[429]

(Raga Suha Bilavala - Tina Tala)

Friend, I slept in profound happiness. A sweet, enchanting and cooling blessed face appeared, radiant as millions of suns. His lips were sweet, His gentle smile enchanting and stealing the minds of sages, seers, knowers and ascetics. His brows were curved, His pure, restless eyes lovely, and a stainless, enchanting flute shone in His hand. Garlands of pearls, jewels, gunja, tulasi and forest flowers adorned His beautiful neck. Mind-stealing anklets chimed at His feet, and lovely bells rang upon His waist. Drunk on the nectar of His form and beauty, I remained astonished and almost exhausted. Spreading my arms, I rushed in desperate longing to grasp His twin feet. The dream broke. I awoke suddenly and stared in shock, for Nanda's son was nowhere to be seen. Since then, friend, a terrible flame burns within my life and consumes mind and body night and day.

That day I went to the forest, forgetting awareness of my body. As though impelled, I reached the realm of Manamohana's lila. There I saw the wondrous and extraordinary splendor of the blessed forest. Its breeze touched my body, and I came into contact with particles of its dust. Unconscious, I returned, having forgotten the very awareness of life. Since then nothing pleases me, and longing for His blessed vision clings to me.

(Raga Kalingada - Tala Kaharava)

Friend, today I saw Him on the bank of the Yamuna. I beheld Him from very near, from toenails to crown, and ever since I have been restless. I heard the wise One take my name upon His flute. The life of my lives was calling me to His side. As iron moves effortlessly under a magnet's attraction, so I ran in desperate longing and reached Him. Mohana stood beneath a kadamba tree on the Yamuna's bank. Seeing His gentle smile, I went mad and not a trace of reason remained. I stood like a clay doll, without awareness of time. Drinking the nectar of His form, I became deeply intoxicated and lost awareness of the body. He told me, "Return to your home with love filling your heart." Then, as though enchanted, my body departed and left the Beloved's company. My mind remained at Syama's feet, having surrendered everything there. My body is distraught; no remedy appears, so intense is its longing to meet Him.

[432]

(Raga Paraja - Tala Kaharava)

When I saw the mind-enchanting Mohana, ocean of the nectar of love's bliss, the ever-fresh ocean of form, treasury of virtues, master of every art and gallant dancer, not one word emerged from my mouth; my eyes remained fixed upon Him. In a moment my heart melted, and a pure stream of tears flowed.

Longing covered every limb, and everyone possessed only this one desire: may He accept us in service and forever bestow delight. Syama is dark blue like a fresh rain cloud, while the sun's daughter shines like lightning. The blessed honeybees of Their eyes are mutually intoxicated by the rasa of each other's lotus faces. All Radha's friends and companions are expansions of Her form and the essence of happiness. Forever absorbed in serving the Divine Pair's happiness, they embody stainless love. Beholding Syama and His fair Beloved's incomparable beauty with the glorious women of Vraja, my life became blessed and every purpose of my heart was fulfilled.

What was in my mind remained within my mind. Gazing upon Manamohana's face, I forgot and could not utter even one thing. I became utterly enchanted; no word emerged, while nectar flowed from my eyes. Ever since, the Beloved's image swings night and day upon the swing within my heart.

[434]

(First Lavani Tune - Tala Kaharava)

Friend, that day I went adorned to fetch water from the bank of the Kalindi. There I saw Natavara, Nanda's son, standing, and every awareness vanished. Nectar-rasa showered from every limb of the ever-young crown of beauty. His hair curled, His body bent threefold and a splendid peacock-moon adorned His head. His restless, sidelong and reddened eyes poured a honeyed stream of love's rasa. The One who shames millions of Cupids irresistibly drew away my mind. His smiling lips and face steal the sages' minds; His complexion is blue and pearls adorn His breast. His sweet flute resounds with honeyed notes and steals even Cupid's mind in every way. Since that day nothing pleases me, and all my limbs tremble day and night. When shall I behold Manamohana to my heart's content, and when shall I touch His pure lotus feet?

Ever since I saw Manamohana standing on the bank of the sun's daughter, I have had not a moment's peace; my mind is distraught and cannot remain composed. Water falls from my eyes night and day, and not the slightest sleep comes at night. My mind rests nowhere for even a moment; neither home, courtyard nor forest pleases me. His lips are sweet, His smile gentle and His incomparable moon-face shames the autumn moon. His beauty surpasses creation, unequaled and filled beyond measure with rasa. His brows curve, yellow cloth encircles His waist, a peacock crown rests upon His head and His lovely hair curls. The radiance of His earrings sparkles, His cheeks shine and His pure attire is that of Natavara. His sweet glance is like a spear that wounds and then fills the wound with nectar. The wound remains forever fresh, while its honey-sharp pang gives joy. Every limb longs to touch Him; the body burns and grows impatient. These lives writhe continually, searching for a way to fly and meet Him. To see the blissful dark cloud Syama again, these eyes have become cataka birds. Moment after moment they cry "Beloved"; the mind will not turn away and longs desperately to hear His sweet words. Friend, make some effort so that by any means we may behold the thief of hearts. Then life may remain and the mind dance with delight as a peacock dances on seeing a cloud.

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

Friend, I have been enchanted by Syama. Helpless, I was sold into Manamohana's hands without even a knot to bind the bargain. One day I went with my companions to fetch water. On the bank of the sun's daughter I met the treasury of rasa who shatters Cupid's pride. Moving His slanting brows, He cast an enchantment upon me. Who knows what happened after that? I forgot all awareness. Awareness of body and mind and every worldly tale disappeared. All eight watches feel as though I remain clasped to His body.

Ever since I saw Nanda's son playing upon the Yamuna's bank, the shore of family honor was swept away, and all awareness was lost. Body, mind and life were wholly transformed and became Kanha's own form. Night and day I experience Mohana's incomparable form within myself. At home or outside, in water or on land, in sky or forest, wherever my gaze extends, there I continually behold dear Nanda-kumara dancing. Either I have gone mad and my vision has changed, or Syama has covered the world. Eyes, life and mind are all fastened to that abode of the nectar-rasa of beauty.

[438]

(Raga Bhupali - Tina Tala)

Today these eyes beheld Syama. The enchanting, ever-fresh Natavara emerged upon my path. Seeing my body, He smiled sweetly with His supreme, enchanting glance. From that moment, body, mind, understanding, wealth and home became His. I was sold without price at His feet, and no worldly purpose remained. Having attained Madhava's lotus feet, the honeybee of my mind rests there eternally.

[439]

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

What can be said of mind and eyes? Moment after moment they grow desperate to behold Nanda's son. Each moment that passes without seeing Him appears like an age. The fire of separation forever burns within my heart and reduces every limb to ash. One dawn I was returning from my mother's home. I saw Him among the cows, smiling gently.

From that day this illness seized me, and terrible turmoil arose. All eight watches I remain absent-minded, pleased by neither home nor outside. Day and night, at every moment, my eyes yearn to see Him. How can I, a daughter-in-law of a respectable family, remain with Him day and night? I have exhausted myself coaxing and explaining to mind and eyes in many ways. They remain obstinate and refuse to obey, lamenting continually as time passes.

[440]

(Fifth Lavani Tune - Tala Kaharava)

That day the young Lady went with Her water pot to the bank of the Yamuna. Ever since, She has remained absent-minded, continually unknowing and restless. Closing Her eyes and resting Her cheek upon Her hand, She sits alone in meditation. Forever sad and without delight, Her lotus face is contracted and perpetually pale. Her limbs are weak, while streams flow from Her eyes like the rains of Sravana and Bhadra. She trembles moment by moment, Her body unconscious, breaths exceedingly long and lips gasping. Her pure, curling hair is disordered, very dry and filled with dust. Her garments are soiled, Her body without ornament, Her form emaciated, pitiable and severe. Lalita came and was deeply pained to see the young Lady helpless. Taking Her in her lap, she immediately wiped Her tears with a tender hand and her own veil. With sweet words filled with the nectar of affection, Lalita asked, "Friend, always happy and smiling, why is Your rasa-filled body withering today? Why do You lament so desperately, and why are Your life-airs so agitated?" Lalita understood within: surely Mohana's arrow had pierced Her heart.

A gunja garland beautifully adorns His neck, along with a lovely, fragrant forest garland. Honey-greedy bees hum sweetly, and a musk tilaka graces His fine brow. [447]

(Lavani Tune - Tala Kaharava)

Friend, at dawn today I set out with a water pot to fetch water. Suddenly Vanamali appeared on the path and climbed the road of my eyes. (1) A gunja garland hung at His neck, a fine tilaka adorned His brow and His dark locks curled. His eyes were sharp, and His rasa-filled eyelids were like enchantresses. (2) He wore a peacock crown and makara-shaped earrings, while His flute-song stole sages' minds. His cloth was yellow, His gentle smile enchanting and His dark-blue body's beauty lovely. (3) Gopi-candana anointed His form; His beauty was inconceivable and His honeyed speech priceless. His lips resembled bimba fruit, His teeth pomegranate seeds and His round cheeks shone. (4) My eyes became fixed and unblinking; I forgot every awareness of body and home. I stood like an image, my heart entangled, while water flowed from my unblinking eyes. (5) Friend, in this way Syama, the thief of hearts, stole my mind the instant He moved away. My body trembled, a flame arose in my heart and boundless anguish spread. (6) Like a madwoman I ran behind Him, throwing down the pot from my head. I know nothing of what happened or how far and where I wandered. (7) Awareness returned and I saw that I stood at the very bank of the Yamuna. Mohana was placing upon my head, with His own lotus hand, the pot He had filled with water. (8) Embarrassed, I settled the pot upon my head and set out for home, thinking it late. Syama's smile in that moment makes my heart surge again and again. (9) Friend, what shall I do? How can I now preserve religious conduct and convention? Syama has become my sole possession, and I have offered everything to Him. (10)

Never remain apart from me; come and enter my heart. Come, star of my eyes. Bearer of incomparable splendor and beauty, Mohana, let me delight You. Knower of everything within my heart, what can I hide from You? Come, star of my eyes.

[449]

(Raga Yamana - Tala Kaharava)

Dear, enchanting, heart-delighting Mohana, destroyer of the anguish of non-meeting, holy One capable of doing all things, come into my mind. This is eternally Your home; nothing within it belongs to another. It depends upon You alone, so claim it as Your own.

Do not leave it even for a moment; play freely within it. Dance and sing, blend Yourself into it and make it an abode of rasa. Since everything is Yours and I too am never separate, what distinct preparation should I make? You alone must tell me. You are my body, mind and wealth; You are my pure life. You are the vital breath of my life, so conceal this no longer. You are the One who is mine within "I" and "mine"; why remain hidden in darkness? Scattering Your supreme bliss, manifest Your form eternally.

[450]

(Raga Yamana - Tala Kaharava)

I shall call You, Syama, and respectfully welcome You into my home. With my eyes I shall sing Your welcome, and giving everything, I shall delight You. With the water of my eyes I shall wash Your feet and swing You upon my heart's swing. I shall bathe You in the rasa of love's nectar and serve You a rasa-filled, sweet meal. I shall lay You upon my heart's tender bed and waft a deeply fragrant breeze. With tender hands I shall massage Your feet and find joy by gazing upon Your beauty. Moment after moment I shall increase the heart's delight, dancing, singing and gladdening You. From toenails to crown I shall sacrifice myself again and again and become wholly offered.

[451]

(Ghazal Tune - Tala Kaharava)

If I could catch that clever, restless and playful thief of hearts, I would immediately hide the handsome, slender gallant against my breast. I would tell Him a juicy, rasa-filled discourse on rasa. I would feed Him fresh butter mixed with sweet rock sugar. I would adorn Him purely with jeweled ornaments, robes and brocade. I would prepare a bed of fragrant flowers and soft, tender leaves.

Serving Him myself, I would remove His fatigue and respectfully lay Him down to rest. I would lead Him purely upon the love-filled path of love. Friend, let me go to the bank of the Yamuna. Scorched all day by separation's summer heat, let me bathe in its cooling water. Let me rest upon the Yamuna's bank and receive the pure, fragrant and gentle breeze. Let me merge into the river at its bank as I do each day and erase my heart's pain. Let me voyage by boat with Syama and sing songs in restless longing. Playing His sweet flute, Hari will remove every pain of body and mind.

[453]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)

The Beloved will come smiling and immediately stand beside me. Seeing Him, I shall become shy, cover my face and smile gently. Observing this, the gallant dancer and ocean of rasa will take hold of my veil. My heart will leap, and pure water of love will flow from my eyes. Taking my hand, He will speak with a choked throat in tender words. Helpless and desperate with love, I shall answer, and every pride will wash away. Seeing me afflicted by love, the Beloved of my life will console me with an open heart. Mixing rock sugar into pure words, He will disclose every honey-filled secret. Seeing the favorable moment, the Beloved will fulfill every hope within my heart. Giving me His affection forever, He will keep me beside Him.

(Raga Bagesri - Tina Tala)

I have entrusted mind and life to You alone, and entrusted possessiveness and pride. Treat them whenever and however You please, knowing them completely as Your own property. Do not hesitate to do what is in Your heart, and think of nothing else. Nothing remains mine now, and You know everything fully. I no longer have any relation with honor or dishonor, sorrow or happiness. You alone are absolute liberation, and You alone are my only bond. Wherever and however I remain, I eternally dwell within You. Every other refuge has fallen away, and every impermanent relationship has ended. The entire world has been dissolved into Your lotus feet alone. Only one master remains, You alone; sport forever in complete freedom.

[455]

(Raga Bhairava - Tina Tala)

May love for Your lotus feet flow freely. May the honeybee of my mind eternally drink the rasa of their nectar. Loss and gain, blame and praise, extreme humiliation and great honor, may the mind possess no awareness of these in a life steeped in love. May the tongue repeat the dear Beloved's name and the heart become an abode of lila. May it touch every limb of the Lord, while the eyes behold His glorious form. May the darkness of delusion disappear, with no concern for birth or death. May causeless love increase every moment, and every moment the longing for rasa. May fear of this world and the next disappear and unobstructed love increase. May Your sacred, unfathomable love remain through birth after birth. May there never arise a thought that it should cease, diminish or stop. May the river of love's rasa surge every moment without alternative.

Friend, let us go to that land of the Beloved where there is no night of delusion and possessiveness and no anguish of separation; where there is no coming or going anywhere, but eternal meeting with the Beloved; where there is no fear of worldly gossip and no sin of infamy; where bodily union never occurs, yet we remain together day and night; where He never leaves the mind for even a moment, reviving the dead heart; where body and mind, naturally possessionless, remain wholly filled with love for Him, and through all eight watches a rain of rasa falls in the Beloved's abode.

May the pain of separation remain forever, for through it remembrance of the Beloved comes. It is exceedingly sweet and filled with divine rasa, removing every bitter taste. Whether we go to heaven or lie through all eight watches in terrible hell; whether we gain fame or are called adulterous and unchaste and become infamous; whether we receive happiness or remain forever surrounded by sorrow, we cannot live even a moment without seeing the glorious moon of Mohana's face. Let iron shackles bind our hands and feet, and terrible bonds restrain us. Let us be forced to drink halahala poison and then have our living skin torn away. Let a garland of dreadful sorrows forever hang upon the breast of life. May we never forget, even accidentally for a moment, Nandalala, Beloved of our lives. Whether body, wealth and family remain or depart, or the beautiful world itself disappears; whether religion, duty, shame and family honor are destroyed; whether dignity and respect vanish, humiliation comes and every right is taken away, may Nanda-kumara, thief of mind and wealth, never leave the heart for a moment. Let black clouds gather and terrible storms arise. Let clouds thunder, hailstones fall and lightning strike again and again. Let hardship, unrest and anguish come and create ever-new turmoil. May we remain immersed day and night in honey-filled remembrance of the sweetest Beloved. Whether merit arises or dreadful sin attaches, whether action or inaction comes; whether terrible torment descends and every desired happiness and dignity disappears; let a thorn continually pierce the heart and forever wound its core. May we never leave Manamohana: this is supreme happiness and true dharma. Even if the Beloved Himself does not want us and refuses to accept us, even if humble prayer earns blows and rejection, even if He posts guards and closes every door, may we never see the slightest fault, and may pure love for His feet increase every moment.

(Raga Malakaunsa - Mula Tala)

Let the heart alone know the heart's secret, for it is deeply hidden and unfit to be spoken. An eternal and sweet union has arisen between me and the Beloved alone. Every possessive tie to the moving and unmoving world has vanished, and all bonds of maya have opened. Nothing anywhere or at any time remains mine; only my relationship with the Beloved remains. No distinction of mine and another remains in the world; apart from Him no person or thing is mine. He alone is my supreme self-interest, and He alone is every goal of life. The mind is His, the understanding His, and in love for Him all knowledge has been forgotten. Night and day these life-airs secretly and purely worship Him alone. At every moment there is an ever-new method of worship and an ever-new taste of rasa. Every moment natural happiness, delight in His happiness and love for His happiness increase without limit. The Beloved still does not know who this silent worshiper is. Forever engaged in worship with life offered, she remains continually hidden and silent. Friend, I have become mad and eternally possess this one desire: may the Beloved never see me consciously engaged in worship. May the Beloved always regard me as devoid of faith, love and worship. Knowing me as utterly poor and impure, may He continue showing compassion toward me. May I inevitably receive only this one fruit of worship: may my worship continually increase and love grow boundless every moment. Yet may the Beloved of my life never learn anything of my worship. May this worship of my Beloved remain forever unknown to Him. For if the sweet-hearted, pure and supremely generous Beloved learned of it, He would not consent without giving me the essential nectar-rasa of His love. Then the desire to obtain my Beloved's happiness might awaken within my mind. Such love of worship would no longer remain, nor would this enthusiasm endure.

Life of my life, I eternally sacrifice myself to You. You are all my body, mind and wealth, and I offer everything to You. Pulse of my lives, I am never separate from You. You may be an ordinary human who has come to undergo karma, or any creature covered by dense darkness. I do not need to know who You are, where You are from or what Your identity is. You are mine and belong to me; this alone is my eternal, firm conviction. You may be a treasury of virtues or an ocean of faults. You are mine exactly as Natavara is Radha's. Her love was firm, her mind deeply trusting and her faith simple and natural. With immense delight, she worshiped Madhava's sacred image. Every day at the appointed time she brought the articles of worship. With a rasa-filled heart, she worshiped Him with flowers and many offerings. She continually bowed and completed the worship. Within her mind arose the pure feeling of offering everything.

[471]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)

"I belong only to Him" and "He alone is mine": this relationship is incomparable. Eternal and infinite certainty became the natural form of her life. Every thought, feeling and action conformed to Him. No light or shadow of the world could now disturb her. The incomparable, stainless and immortal flame of love for the Lord's feet burned eternally. No impermanent storm of sorrow or happiness could shake it. All the false and painful dualities of the world were naturally uprooted. Drinking the true nectar-rasa of love, she became eternally and utterly blissful.

(Raga Bhimapalasi - Mula Tala)

Everything that was "I" and "mine" was surrendered at the Lord's feet. The entire ancient encampment of attachment withdrew forever from the moving and unmoving world. All her possessiveness now had a relationship only with the Lord. Every other love, confidence and kinship disappeared, and every bond opened. Love rested in Him, feeling belonged to Him and the entire world existed within Him. Apart from Him, no one remained with whom she could transact. She did not want anyone to know anything of this condition. May it remain forever unknown even to the Lord, Beloved of her life. Every day she worshiped with beautiful, fresh, fragrant and tender flowers. Her worship was deeply hidden, and she feared only that He might discover it. May this pure worship continue safely for endless time. Wherever and however she might remain, may it never end. Through this worship may she alone eternally receive bliss. May boundless taste continually increase, and supreme bliss increase forever. May increasing worship itself be worship's one sacred fruit. May she eternally behold His deeply enchanting form. Yet may He never see her or her worship. If He saw it, her feeling would be completely reversed. Her stainless, one-sided devotion could no longer remain, and ever-new desires to receive happiness from the Beloved would arise.

[473]

(Raga Lavani - Tala Kaharava)

He remains blended and united with me at every moment. If He cannot see me for even a moment, He becomes distraught. My happiness alone is His supremely pure happiness. He remains forever and unwaveringly immersed in it. Yet though He is eternally near, I lose Him. Having lost Him, I again become sorrowful. I weep and lament but cannot find Him. For the sake of the eternally attained Beloved, I cry out. It seems that He remains far away and will not come near. Why would He call one as loveless as me to His side? I weep forever, and He does not notice. Therefore He Himself does not establish union. Seeing me in such deep error, He laughs, beholding the heart-stealing condition of non-meeting within eternal meeting. He says, "Look, Beloved, I am beside You! I sacrifice Myself to this wondrous state of love." Awareness returns, the eyes open and consciousness awakens. Every sorrow flows away in the sweet current of rasa. Rasa's current grows immensely powerful and supreme happiness spreads. Eternally attaining the Beloved beside me, my joy knows no bounds.

Continuation of [478]

If Syama commands, we shall joyfully abandon life with immense enthusiasm. If Syama commands, we shall remain immortal so that the Beloved's wish is fulfilled. Syama may cause humiliation, perform it Himself or bestow honor. Whatever makes Syama happy is our only true honor. Syama may remain eternally united, never leaving us for a moment and preserving attachment. Or Syama may never meet us and fill His life with detachment from us. However Syama becomes happy, our supreme bliss rests in that alone. No joy ever exists within the mind contrary to Syama's heart. If renunciation occurs for Syama's happiness, we possess no awareness of it. Everything arises naturally, simply, joyfully and without pride solely through love for Syama. When the heart is filled with love for Syama, who could feel what pride? When Syama has become life itself, who could claim to favor anyone? The fruit of Syama's love has been wholly attained; what supreme fruit remains? When every act is for Syama, what importance remains in renunciation? Syama is everything to us, and we are eternally the means of Syama's happiness. Syama Himself continually makes us worship His happiness through us.

[479]

(Raga Sohani - Dadara Tala)

Talk of Syama is our life. Talk of Syama is a treasury of happiness. Talk of Syama is our glory. Talk of Syama is our honor. Talk of Syama is supremely delightful to us. Whoever recites talk of Syama to us, whoever explains talk of Syama to us, whoever teaches us Syama's way and engages us in love for Syama, to that person we remain eternally and supremely grateful.

(Fifth Lavani Tune - Tala Kaharava)

Radha is at home and in the forest; Radha is eternally on the Yamuna's bank. Radha is delight, Radhika supreme delight, and Radha flows as water from the eyes. Radha is life, Radha understanding and mind, Radha the star of the eyes. Radha is in body and senses; Radha is the nectar-stream of love's bliss. Radha is mind and wealth; name and abode are all Radha. Radha is worship and meditation; japa, austerity and sacrifice are all Radha. Radha is in waking and sleeping, in eating and drinking. Radha is in rising and sitting and in laughter. Radha is the fresh spring breeze from Malaya; Radha removes every obstacle. Radha is eternally my mistress; Radha is supremely worshipable.

[481]

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharava)

The Beloved is eternally my life, and I am His own life. Why did providence create two bodies? What welfare did it envision? His conduct toward me is so exceedingly extraordinary that I can never repay it in any way. Seeing my Beloved's conduct, I sink into shame. I entreat Him in many ways, yet cannot make Him understand. If He ever sees me chewing betel, even on the road, He forgets every convention, extends His hand and begs like a mendicant. Seeing the color of my body, He wears yellow cloth. Taking my name upon His flute, the Beloved forever fills it with melody. Whenever He detects the fragrance of my limbs from some direction, He becomes like a madman and flies that way like a bee. Hundreds of glorious women endowed with beauty and virtue long to serve Him, yet Syama never looks toward anyone but me.

[483]

(Rāga Kāliṅgaḍā - Tāla Kaharavā)

Continuation of [481]

For my sake the Beloved abandoned every honor of caste and family. How can I, destitute of virtue and a treasury of faults, repay this debt? I am unable either to restrain Him or endure it. Let the treasure of my life do whatever His heart desires; He alone understands His purpose.

[482]

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharava)

Only if He moved from before me could I behold anything else. When He dwells forever within my mind, how could I take account of another? Speaking with Him alone leaves me no leisure. How then could this tongue move to discuss another? He forever tells me sweet and rasa-filled things. Leaving that incomparable, sweet rasa, whom else could I hear? His service gives me not one moment of spare time. Abandoning Him, how could I ever serve anyone else? Nothing of me remains useful to anyone now. Whatever I possessed has been wholly surrendered to Him.

[483]

(Raga Kalingada - Tala Kaharava)

My dear Beloved Lord surely remains forever beside me. Eating and drinking, sleeping and waking, walking and moving, He smiles gently. The Beloved eternally draws my gaze and delights me. He performs lilas in many ways and truly presses me to His heart. Embracing me, He asks questions and intimately tells me His own thoughts. With His own hands He arranges my hair and tenderly caresses my body. When my inner feeling changes, I can no longer see Him. Heavy pain of separation arises, and body and mind become distraught. Each moment passes like an age, and a terrible flame rises within the heart. Then He appears at once and becomes a sweet garland around my neck.

Continuation of [483]

Dear Ghanasyama remains forever united with me in every condition. He continually grants the happiness of the lila of meeting and separation.

[484]

(Raga Kalyana - Tala Kaharava)

He dwells eternally within my heart and never disappears. There He has established an immovable camp and rests in happiness. He lets no one enter or even look within. Establishing His complete authority, He enjoys complete bliss. Outwardly too He remains continually all around me. He permits no one to enter within the boundary of my senses. He forever covers my vision, the star of my eyes. The Beloved pours the nectar of honeyed words and music into my ears. He gives my nose the incomparable sweetness of His bodily fragrance. He forever gives my tongue the sweet taste of His rasa-filled, nectarean prasada. Giving His touch to every limb, He eternally blesses them. He completely removes every other worldly relationship. Thus He dwells forever in understanding, mind and senses. Holding absolute sovereignty, He declares firmly: "You and everything Yours are wholly My possession. Apart from Me, You too must never call anyone else 'mine.'" Thus I belong only to You, and You alone are my Beloved. We are one and shall remain eternally one, never separate.

[485]

(Raga Bhimapalasi - Tala Kaharava)

He never leaves me even for a moment and continually acts as He pleases. Utterly mischievous, He forever teases me sweetly. He never allows me to act according to my own mind even slightly. Sometimes He makes me weep, sometimes laugh and sometimes dances me for His pleasure.

Continuation of [485]

Sometimes He presses me to His heart in delight, and sometimes pushes me away with "Go, go." Sometimes He gives sweet nectar to drink, filling His flute with His own melody. Therefore His melody alone resounds throughout this life. Filled with His rasa, the rasa-filled mind naturally worships Him forever. Nothing remains according to my mind; everything in His heart is mine. Let Him do and cause whatever He wishes; every calculation has ended.

[486]

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharava)

Eternally there is terrible, dreadful separation, fierce longing to meet and burning within the heart. Eternally there is the sweet and enchanting happiness of union, continual festival and pure enthusiasm. Both are auspicious and both are happiness; union abides within both. One eternally fills the inner being, while the other gives outward experience. Within and without, both remain eternally present together. In both there continually falls a pure and wondrous rain of diverse rasas. Separation never occurred, does not exist and cannot exist even for a moment. The mass of rasa-filled conscious bliss is eternally one and eternally becomes two.

[487]

(Raga Vihaga - Tina Tala)

Syama has come to dwell within my mind. He never leaves for even a moment but remains continually sunk within it. He forever acts as He pleases and does not wish to move away even briefly. Shaking me and twisting the bud of my heart, He sings in supreme delight. He keeps me filled with love, bound tightly within His arms. United with every limb, He relishes stainless rasa. The more He twists the bud, the more my heart continues to laugh. My mind is caught for endless time in Syama's net of affection.

Friend, have I gone mad, or has your form changed? In your place I see Mohana's incomparable form. Either it alone resounds forever, or my ears have become enchanted. My nose continually receives His sweet bodily fragrance from every direction. Nanda's young son eternally gives my tongue His sweet nectar to taste. Every limb continually receives the dear touch of the Beloved's limbs. My tongue forever sings only the greatness of His name and virtues. Who can say what, to whom or how? Every duality of maya has disappeared. Now the free lila of the lila-filled Lord proceeds eternally.

(Raga Malava - Tina Tala)

After a long time, blissful union with the Beloved occurred. Every flame within the heart was extinguished, and all anguish disappeared. Let the full moon rise in the sky and the cuckoo call; no flame will now arise in the body and no pang in the heart. Let the gentle Malaya breeze blow and honeybees hum; beside the Lord of my life, sorrow will no longer spread. Every affliction departed when long-separated Mohana Syama met me. Life became filled with delight, and every purpose was fulfilled.

Our greedy eyes are honeybees. They continually drink the sweet rasa of His form and never separate for even a moment. As greed increases with each gain, so these eyes grow more covetous. A sweet relationship of love arose, eternally indivisible and supremely pure. The doors of the heart opened, and every distance and concealment vanished. Each understood the mysterious inner core of the other. They became eternally inseparable as the possessor and quality of one another's life. Forever one in rasa, one in mind and one in incomparable desire, They remain forever one yet eternally become two through Their captivating forms. Every sweet and bitter relation of body and home broke away. Eternally liberated, They freely bound Themselves in love's enduring bond. In the absence of two, fear, shame, sorrow, intoxication and pride vanished. Yet They eternally became two to give and receive rasa from each other. Every duality filled with life and death ceased completely. Each desired to give the other pure happiness filled with renunciation. Every rule fell away and no residue of action remained. The Beloved united Her wholly, preserving not the slightest trace of separation.

Continuation of [495]

Yet He sees nothing of life's good or bad conduct. Giving His entire self with a delighted heart, He continually fulfills me. I do not know why this supremely clever king of rasa, treasury of virtues, is so pleased. What extraordinary hidden beauty has the Beloved seen within me? Even experiencing all this, I do not experience it clearly. Therefore I continually pine, lament, weep and sigh. Even within eternal union, I suffer the bitter experience of non-meeting. Smiling gently, He awakens me with His touch, and seeing His face I become shy.

How could I see Him far away when the Lord remains near? Therefore I dwell forever at the Lord's feet. The Lord eternally gazes upon me with His rasa-filled eyes. My eyes too remain fixed upon Him, enjoying happiness and peace. The sweet Beloved showers rasa upon me day and night. I remain immersed in rasa, and every limb stays submerged. Mind, understanding, senses and limbs remain eternally united. Without obstruction, ever-new colors of rasa arise forever. Desire for enjoyment and liberation has disappeared, along with attachment to the body. Supremely pure attachment to the Beloved continually increases.

He alone remains; everything is His own guise. Sorrow and happiness are both His forms; He alone covers everything. He performs lila by Himself and shows only Himself.

Sweet union with Syama was attained, and every disease of the world disappeared. Then one sweet illness was found, which grew and consumed every enjoyment. May this beloved illness continue to grow. May it increase forever. May it never suffer separation. Sweet union with Syama was attained.

Friend, when every limb of mine was cut, an altogether different color blossomed within me. He cut through every inner bond and pierced the body for His melodies. My breast is filled with holes; behold what has happened. I say nothing and remain forever silent, while the Beloved's sweet melody flows through those openings. Let Him sing through me whatever He wishes, however greatly anyone may praise me.

(Raga Jangala - Tala Kaharava)

All grief, delusion, fear, honor, desire, possessiveness, intoxication and pride disappeared. The cycle of birth, fear of death, attachment and enmity all ended. Every entanglement of the moving and unmoving world vanished, and I became fulfilled in every way. Only the Beloved remained, and every other support disappeared. Love freely filled everything, and only honeyed bliss remained. A sweet stream of nectar-rasa flowed; only the Beloved's love remained.

Kanha is the chosen Lord, life of my life. Seeing His form, the whole world fell away and no other awareness remained. He alone is now all my body and mind, the life of my life. He is the pupil of my eyes and the pulse of my heart. Friend, why waste time trying to instruct me? Drinking the nectar of His form, I have gone mad and convention has broken. Forget me now, all of you, and regard me as the disgrace of the family. Mad, I shall remain lying within the Beloved's dear embrace. Every worldly bond was naturally cut, and no other world remained. I eternally placed the Beloved within His own feet, and concern and sorrow vanished. Whether near or far, He remains eternally beside me. An indestructible, unbreakable and unforced relationship with Him has arisen forever.

He performs wondrous play and ceaselessly drinks and gives the nectar-rasa of His lips. Removing every obstacle, Mohana presses me to His body.

That wanton and exceedingly cunning rogue stole everything of mine. Yasoda's son is a supremely clever thief, shameless deceiver and trickster. Giving me the sweet wine of His form, He intoxicated me into unconsciousness. Then the rascal plundered everything and acted as He pleased. What shall I do, and whom shall I tell? Nothing remains with me. The deceiver stole mind, understanding, direction and love, and gave me special servitude. Now I no longer remain within myself; every sense of selfhood has been plundered. I am wholly blended into Him, and every other relationship has broken.

I know nothing of night or day, nor when evening or dawn comes. In waking and dream I forever see Syama, thief of my heart. I have forgotten my own name and abode and forgotten who I am. Making His eyes dance, stealing my life, He stands smiling silently. How sweet was that form, how wondrous and captivating that beauty! My eyes pine and continually stream as memory recreates His incomparable beauty. Piercing my core, He destroyed propriety and shattered every pride. Worldly shame and family convention vanished, along with all awareness of mine and another's. Ah, what a nectar-filled moon-face wanders upon the Kalindi's bank! Stealing everything and breaking every bond, He erased every shore of convention.

Mohana shows His face and removes every false delusion of maya. Nothing and no one remains apart from Syamasundara alone. Within everyone and everywhere, Ranchor appears smiling sweetly.

The conception of "I" and "You" has vanished, along with awareness of self and other. I no longer remain an agent, even slightly separate from Him. His graceful body bends threefold, yellow cloth shines, and a gunja garland adorns His neck. A crown of peacock feathers, curling hair and a musk tilaka grace His fine brow. The flute shines in His hand, bells at His waist and anklets ring upon His feet. Hundreds of millions of Cupids sacrifice themselves to His dark-blue lotus face. His lips bear a sweet, enchanting smile, and His sidelong glance is a net. The birds of sages' minds, unable to reach Him, see His beauty and are caught at once. The Syama-sun shines eternally, and worldly darkness flees in fear. If it ever dares approach, it dies without being struck.

The ever-new sweetness of His bodily fragrance intoxicates the mind. His ever-new nectar-filled glance removes every affliction. His lips possess ever-new redness and His smile eternal freshness. Friend, behold Mohana's smile! The instant you see it, awareness will vanish and pride be forgotten. Among gods, sages, humans, demons, animals and birds, who has ever been born who did not lose all awareness on seeing the young Lord's gentle smile? Yogis, supreme ascetics and sages who conquered their minds glimpsed that sweet smile and helplessly lost their lives. Natural detachment and the bliss of Brahman were forgotten; their exhausted eyes stood fixed. Their bodies thrilled, loving tears filled their eyes, hearts melted and love's rasa increased. Your heart is filled with affection, so what power have you to resist? Nothing will remain when you see Mohana smiling. If you ever hear even a little of that flute's melody, all possessiveness, worldly shame and family convention will fall away. Only while that sweet smile has not entered your sight may you continue babbling and preserve low pride within your heart.

Friend, I am dyed through and through in Syama's color. Long ago I gave myself to Syama without a bargain, steeped in the pollen of love. Mohana's radiant beauty entered and settled in the temple of my mind. His sidelong glance came like a sweet spear and struck within my heart. The heart received a deep wound, and within it a blissful light arose. Pain became delightful, and a stream of honeyed rasa welled up within the wound. I forgot all awareness of the moving and unmoving world; every attachment fell away. Seeing the strange condition of body and mind, I remained utterly astonished. No attraction to anyone remained; thought and movement fastened upon Mohana's face. Forever intoxicated with the bliss of love, I watched maya's army flee.

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

Friend, I am steeped in love for the Beloved. My course, understanding and affection are all Syama; I remain wholly immersed in Him. What task is to be done, how and when, and where or with whom? He alone does and causes everything, forever devising new ways. Sustaining, directing and contemplating, every conduct called good or bad, He performs it all wherever, whenever and however He wills. I retain no inward awareness of fault, lack, mistake, confusion or error. I possess neither knowledge nor ignorance with which to deliberate. I am a puppet in His hand; He makes me dance according to His own mind. He makes me play whatever games please the heart of my Beloved. He has made and kept me mad; not a trace of ordinary awareness remains. My body, mind, wealth and consciousness are all the flute-player alone.

Nanda-kisora, my incomparable Beloved, is an ocean of nectar-rasa and peerless beauty, the supreme bliss that puts countless experiences of Brahman-bliss to shame, the ultimate thief of the heart. When I beheld His graceful threefold-bending form smiling gently and sweetly at me, every impurity was washed away, the mind grew still and its covering broke at once. The knot of the heart immediately snapped and the bodice's fastening instantly opened. Every limb became unveiled, and all obstruction came to an end. The bees of my unwinking, motionless eyes drank the honey of the lotus of His form. Body and senses sank into the happiness of service and naturally forgot the entire world. Blending into the Beloved made of conscious bliss and rasa, I became bodiless while still embodied. No conception of the world remained, and every doubt was destroyed at its root.

He strokes my back with a tender hand, comforts me and speaks affectionately. He pours sweet nectar at the root of the vine of my hope. With words sweeter than sweet He delights me and forever seeks my happiness from His heart. Though infinitely great, He forgets all greatness and adores my heart. The king of the gods forever longs to touch the pollen of His feet, yet why should He take account of a lowly village cowherd girl like me? Even so, He never forgets me and regards me as truly His own. He rejoices in my joy and feels profound sorrow in my pain. His lotus feet do not enter even the stainless minds of sages, yet that supremely inaccessible Lord, overcome by love, seats me within His own heart.

[516]

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)

Pure existence, consciousness and bliss, supremely established in His own glory and eternally without desire, He nevertheless accepts fitting desires within His mind for the sake of my happiness. Naturally free of craving and attachment, free of possessiveness and eternally changeless, for my sake He accepts me in the form of His beloved. Gods, seers, sages and the world are enchanted by each one of His qualities, yet He, love embodied, remains eternally and faultlessly enchanted by me. Countless hundreds of millions of Cupids forever sacrifice themselves before each of His limbs, yet He continually gazes upon my beauty and cannot take rest. He never feels hunger or thirst even for an instant and remains forever fulfilled, yet for a particle of the pure prasada of my rasa He is eternally unsatisfied. Made of the rasa of love, rasa embodied and the supreme rasika, He is an ocean of divine love-rasa. Forever drinking the nectar-rasa of love, He stands embodied as divine love itself.

(Raga Vasanta - Tina Tala)

I am forever His possession, the great object of His enjoyment alone. Therefore He alone knows my pain and my happiness. The wounds of my body and the boundless anguish of my mind, He alone bears the weight of all their pain and sorrow. If some good quality of mine gives Him delight, that virtue too is His own gift, the prasada of His grace. My life is His, my understanding His, my mind His, and my body His wealth. Let Him alone protect them, break them, shatter them or strike them hard. However, whenever and whatever He makes me do, let Him make me dance resoundingly. Let Him make me speak harshly, sing songs or utter exceedingly sweet words. A parrot understands no meaning when it says, "Radhe-Syama." The one who taught it is the only one who needs to know the meaning. If He teaches sweet music Himself, then listens and receives praise, that praise is His own; how could the parrot take pride in it? Filling my life with His own honey, He Himself drinks that honey. Thus He is happy only through His own happiness and needlessly gives me honor. But when no separate existence of mine remains anywhere, all happiness and honor are His, because everything is His action. This is my relationship with Syama: Syama has become my very form. Body, mind and speech, enjoyed and enjoyer, container and contained, are all He alone. If anything of my own remains, if any private feeling lies hidden anywhere, may it catch fire this very instant and pass into utter nonexistence.

(Raga Kalyana - Tina Tala)

Ghansyama alone is the treasure of my life. Whether good or bad, compassionate or merciless, He is the delight of my life. He may love me deeply and forever hold me tightly against His heart. He may sport in the rasa dance with me alone, sending everyone else away. He may forever rejoice in my happiness and give me joy at every moment. For my sake He may bear terrible disgrace among all the other friends. He may stay beside me through all eight watches, tasting ever-new rasa, giving me ever-new rasa to taste and speaking sweet words. Or He may become utterly merciless, regarding my pain as pleasure, and honor other young women before my eyes again and again. Friend, if the Lord of my life finds happiness in my pain, I shall consider that supreme joy and pray that it remain day and night. If some woman cherished by the Lord of my life should grow proud and, because of me, fail to honor my Beloved, I shall go and fall at her feet, entreating and conciliating her. I shall remain her servant all my life and never reveal wounded pride. Whatever way gives Him happiness gives me the greatest happiness. Seeing the Lord of my life joyful, my heart will rejoice moment by moment. May lightning strike the woman who serves her beloved merely to obtain pleasure for her own senses, who takes happiness from him in that way. I find my happiness only in His happiness, for He is my life and breath. How may that Beloved be happy? This alone is my meditation.

(Tune of Lavani - Tala Kaharava)

I belong solely to Him, and He alone is mine. No one remains in my mind who may call me his or her own. In the same way, all my claim over everyone else has disappeared since I surrendered myself and the Beloved accepted me. The body may remain anywhere; someone may give it the love of his heart, or someone may torment it and continually reject it. However anyone regards or treats it according to his desire, that has nothing to do with me; the entire transaction concerns only the body. I can never again become an object of anyone's possessiveness. Every relationship founded on the duality of "mine" and "yours" has been destroyed. He is mine and I am His; this one relationship alone remains. All the small and great bonds of delusion and possessiveness have been cut.

[520]

(Tune of Lavani - Tala Kaharava)

Friend, both union with and separation from Syama are always delightful to me. In love that increases moment by moment, not even a hair's breadth remains for obstruction. When the sweetness of the Beloved's form becomes directly visible, when I behold Him before me, smiling sweetly, without blinking, and when embracing Him I receive supreme bliss within the mind, that is regarded as the purest, blissful and abundant union. When I cannot see the Beloved, it seems that He has gone far away. The mind becomes restless, impatient and filled with pain. Although the flame of separation's fire is terribly and fiercely tormenting, and countless tongues of many kinds forever leap from it in every direction, within those very flames an immeasurable, tenderly touching, cooling nectar continually emerges and spreads immaculate coolness.

Continuation of [520]

Even the nectar-raining net of moonlight from countless autumn moons could never equal that coolness. Love grows still more intense, and the treasury of happiness born of remembrance increases. Every movement of mind becomes filled with the Beloved, and immeasurable bliss expands. In a life bereft of outward enjoyment, inward union immediately occurs. Within separation, incomparable divine union becomes manifest. The inner blaze is extinguished and an immeasurable stream of nectar-rasa begins to flow. Weeping itself becomes an ocean of bliss-rasa, without visible shore or limit. Friend, I always desire that this divine weeping of mine continue to increase and that the beloved son of Nanda return again and again to cool my heart. I dwell in Him and He in me; we remain eternally and truly nondifferent. We perform lila in two forms but are never severed. Friend, those who do not know the nature and greatness of the holy deity of love, their minds stained by lust, cannot see the reality of perfect union within separation. Those attached to objects and anxious for bodily pleasure can never receive this bliss. Bodily separation keeps burning them without relief.

[521]

(Raga Bhairava - Tala Kaharava)

You are His and He is eternally yours; He forever remains beside you. Syama always keeps you united with Himself, upon His own path. Never mistakenly doubt, "You are separate from Him." Blended oneness is the truth, although two bodies may appear distinct. Neither place nor time can ever create an obstruction. In every place and time, eternal companionship is assured. In form and in essential reality, you two are truly and eternally nondifferent. Appearing as though distinct, you each find happiness in the other's happiness and perform sweet lila. Separation and meeting are the two banks of this love-filled river of lila. Between them, the divine current of nectar-rasa eternally flows everywhere.

Friend, this is an incomparable wonder. Millions upon millions of suns shine within, while outside lies a profoundly dark night. Within, the doors of rasa's chamber stand open; outside, hard shutters are fastened. Outside are loneliness and silence; within, a marketplace of beauty flourishes. One called unchaste enters within as supremely chaste and remains forever in holy company. Without water or bathing, she remains forever soaked in the Beloved's color of rasa. Though her body is untouched, it is wholly devoted to touch and touches lovely Syama's limbs. There, hidden beyond the moving and unmoving world, divine Madhava smiles sweetly. Abandoning the husband who is an image of austerity, she delights in the other Husband beyond all bounds. Renunciation of enjoyment is colored by love, and natural detachment blossoms beyond detachment. Siva, Brahma, Sesa, Vyasa, Suka, Narada and Sarasvati forever sing its virtues. Seeing the melody of this lila, the minds of unbound, liberated sages eternally yearn for it.

[523]

(Raga Pilu - Tina Tala)

Filling my ears with His enchanting voice and the melody of His honeyed flute, He lets me hear no other sound and has made my ears forever deaf to all else. He remains always pressed against my body, leaving no separation. No memory of any other touch remains, and consciousness has become one-pointed. Day and night He dwells within the pupils of my eyes. He never lets me see anything else and enchants me with His form alone. The tongue has become an ever-new rasika, tasting His beautiful prasada. Every salty and sweet flavor of this world and the next has disappeared. The nose is absorbed in the fragrance of His limbs, and every other sweet scent has vanished. It has become intoxicated, and all the world's fragrances and foul odors have gone. Mohana has filled my mind with His smile, which enchants the sages. He has made consciousness absorbed in contemplation of His beautiful, luminous feet.

Sorrow and happiness are no longer separate, and every sense of distinction has grown still. Therefore, for the sake of my happiness, He raises the banner of divine love. Becoming the very image within my mind, He manifests ever-new sweet vitality. He forever bestows extraordinary rasa and Himself drinks that pure rasa. All His lila is wondrous, removing every false pride. It continually draws me toward Him alone and keeps me forever overwhelmed with bliss. Neither this world nor the next remains, nor any creature or object. Neither enjoyment nor renunciation remains for me; the Beloved alone remains as supreme reality. The world has disappeared, along with all its dualities in the form of sorrow and happiness. The ocean of bliss-rasa overflows, filled with the incomparable sweet waves of Syama.

[526]

(Raga Pilu - Tina Tala)

Friend, why have you become sad because the lifter of Govardhana did not fulfill my heart's hope? He is supremely skilled in rasa and love, the crown of rasika hearts and perfectly wise. I am ignorant of rasa, a rustic cowherd girl whose heart is covered by ignorance. He is an ocean of every virtue, an ever-fresh lover, and His beauty is boundless. I am devoid of noble qualities and greatness, poor, rustic and a dwelling place of ugliness. Thus I am unfit in every way, deficient and impure in every respect. Even so, I remain forever a humble particle of dust from His tender lotus feet.

[527]

(Raga Gauri - Tina Tala)

Friend, if wise Syama has become displeased, what power have I? May the life of my lives remain happy. My eyes and mind forever yearn to drink the sweet nectar-rasa of His form. My restless life refuses to remain and is drawn toward death moment by moment. The wretched body that the Beloved abandoned in this way will surely fall away now, most dull and unfortunate. Friend, grant me one request and fulfill this longing: bind this body to the dark tamala tree with the vines of its arms. Keep watch over it forever so the crows cannot eat it. If the Beloved should someday come and see it, perhaps life will awaken again.

If even a little heat should remain within me, it would burn His tender limbs. Therefore only joyful coolness remains, and happiness cannot be contained within my heart. If He sees me unhappy even for a moment, He continually laments. Friend, in His happiness an ocean of joy forever surges within my heart.

(Raga Bhairavi - Tala Kaharava)

Beloved friend, listen to the delightful words we friends heard from the Beloved's own mouth on the joy-giving bank of the Yamuna at dawn today. With immense happiness He said, "Nowhere is there anyone like Radha, the treasury of beauty, character and virtue, the supreme lover in all the world." At once the humble lotus faces of the friends blossomed on hearing their own friend's virtues sung from the lotus mouth of the Beloved.

Blessed, blessed, supremely blessed are the words of the dear Beloved. Blessed is friend Radhika, whom the Beloved Himself praises.

[531]

(Raga Kalingara - Tala Kaharava)

That sweet, enchanting, gentle smile was returning to my memory. I could not forget the honeyed song of the flute. The mind was stretched beyond limit and awareness of the body was disappearing. Life, a pure bird, was flying away, forming its course toward Syama. Just then the intoxicating flute sounded its sweet melody. Suddenly startled, I abandoned pride and ran toward the sound. I saw You standing there, drawing the terrible arrows of Your curved brows. Intoxicated, I advanced to fill my arms with You, and immense delight filled my life. Before I could draw near, Beloved, You suddenly vanished. Like a fish parted from water I writhed, and my face grew pale. Unable to walk, despondent, I sat down in the forest as a mine of sorrow. Someone came, bound me in the snare of His arms and bestowed happiness. Immeasurable joy arose from His touch; my eyes opened, and I found the wise Beloved. I saw Him filling my lap and beginning to drink sweet rasa. Heart met heart, every limb became intoxicated, and nectar-rasa overflowed. An immeasurable river of nectar-rasa swelled and swept away all knowledge and discrimination. The world was forgotten and everything vanished; only boundless sweetness remained. I retained not the slightest awareness whether I existed or You did.

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

Friend, I am a mine of faults. My body is fair but my mind is dark, and my life is filled with terrible sin. There is not the slightest renunciation in my mind; it is filled with immeasurable pride. Not a trace of love is present, for I remain forever concerned only with my own happiness.

Worldly sorrow and deprivation torment me, and the mind becomes aware of pain. Then twice as many tears stream from that sorrow, but they arise from no love at all. I display those tears of suffering as though they were great and pure love. I practice deceit, conceal the heart's true feeling and knowingly stage a performance. My innocent Beloved becomes enchanted and sings my stainless virtues. He praises my supposed excess of love and regards me as the supreme lover. All of you join in praising me, and then I swell with pride. At that very moment I devise countless disguises and spread a whole web of deception. Day and night I cheat simple-hearted Syama through many contrivances. Shame upon this polluted life of mine, and shame upon this false honor.

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

Friends, perform this one service: grant my dead body a beautiful destiny in the following way. Friends dearer than life, whisper the mantra into my ears. Let me hear the exceedingly sweet name "Krishna" as this life departs. Even after death, sound the immeasurably sweet melody of Krishna's name. Steady your minds and write "Krishna" upon every limb. Do not cast the body into the Yamuna, and do not burn it in fire. Roll it through the dust of Vraja and carry it there to be fastened, blessed by that dust. Bind its two arms around the branch of a pure tamala tree. Touching that lovely Krishna-colored tree, may the body remain forever blessed. Every day, all of you come together to see it at the holy hour of dawn. Take dust from Syama's playground and place it as tilaka upon the forehead. Into both ears sound the honeyed, delightful name "Krishna, Krishna." Forever perform beautiful kirtana of Krishna's name in all four directions. Write the Beloved's dear name upon the arms, forehead, face and breast. Place a tulasi garland around the neck of Hari's beloved, the abode of joy.

If for some reason the Beloved should ever return to Vrindavana, His life-restoring sight and touch may cause life to enter the body again. If in this way I could behold the treasure of my life once more, I would grasp His feet, keep Him forever near and implore Him with utmost humility.
