The Sweetness of Sri Krishna's Childhood Lilas
[204]
(Raga Sivaranjani - Tala Kaharava)
The mere remembrance of Him ends even the subtlest desire, yet the One whose every desire is fulfilled runs hungrily, desiring His mother's milk. The eternally satisfied Lord, whose meditators also become satisfied, considers Himself eternally unsatisfied because He longs for that milk.
The Supreme Person is pure being, untouched by the three material qualities, yet He assumes anger, bites His lips and shows not a trace of forgiveness. The auspicious remembrance of Him removes anger and every other fault, yet when His desire is frustrated He displays anger toward the pot of yogurt.
Forever endowed with perfect sovereignty and the ultimate foundation of royal glory, He is nevertheless driven by greed to sneak into butter storerooms and steal. Yama, Kubera and all others perform their duties in fear of Him, yet at the sight of a tiny stick in His mother's hand He becomes the very image of fear.
With the anxious eyes of a thief He repeatedly looks toward the door: "Mother must not come, or she will punish me as a guilty thief." Overcome by fear, Hari runs away, naturally increasing His swift pace, but Mother reaches Him and catches Him, rendering divine mastery ineffective.
Grasping His hand, Mother shows the stick, scolds Him sharply and says, "Restless friend of monkeys! Uncontrolled child! You have become insolent and utterly unruly. Today I shall destroy all Your pride in cleverness." Rubbing His eyes with one hand, Sri Bhagavan begins to cry.
Simply surrendering to Him immediately cuts every bond, yet He is forcibly tied to the mortar and cries charming, honeyed tears. He is pure existence, consciousness and bliss, eternal, ever liberated and supremely independent, yet accepts a rope around His belly and becomes dependent upon Yasoda.

Continuation of [204]
Boundless universes remain eternally submerged in every drop of the matchless ocean of His sovereignty. Who could cross beyond it? The limit of the limitless Lord can never be defined. No end can be found to the eternal, infinite, complete mass of consciousness.
He accepts desire, anger, greed, fear, crying and bondage, and makes them divine by incorporating them into His own nature. This is neither imagination nor sentiment, neither maya, theater nor transient pretense. It is the true, pure and sacred tasting of love-rasa's nectar by the Lord who is filled with rasa.
Contradictory attributes eternally coexist in Hari, who is governed by pure love. Therefore all His deeds are astonishing and extraordinary. Neither liberated knowers nor perfected yogis can fathom them. They naturally drown in the great ocean formed by the multitude of Syama's forms.
Only those who become wholly His by offering everything in love can taste the supreme relish of this sweet divine rasa of Bhagavan. Thus the greatly fortunate gopis and cowherds, whose lives are wholly offered, continually taste divine rasa's nectar in every manner and at every moment.
The supreme rasika Nandalala never leaves Vraja. He forever delights all His own people and grants them happiness. Countless obeisances to the sacred particles of dust from those lovers' feet, under whose love Hari performs His supremely sweet divine play.
His mighty rope of maya binds all the countless worlds. Gods, demons, sages, humans, moving and unmoving beings are all enveloped by that bondage.

Govinda rests in the Queen of Vraja's lap. With an astonished gaze He sucks the big toe of His lotus foot in His lotus mouth.
Baby Mukunda has curly hair and wears an incomparable peacock feather upon His head. Armlets, a tiger-claw pendant, a girdle and anklets adorn His wondrous form.
Mother gazes upon His lotus face with loving eyes and a gentle smile. Supporting Him with her soft hands, her heart overflows with delight.

Syama plays with a rattle. Nanda's son, the abode of happiness, lies within a jewel-studded cradle.
Little bells ring at His waist, bracelets adorn His hands and a pearl necklace His throat. A tiger-claw pendant rests upon His breast, armlets upon His arms and a tilaka upon His shining brow.
His cheeks are round, His lips crimson and His thick hair curly. His lovely sweet lotus eyes steal the heart, and His enchanting infant attire delights all.
A crown adorned with peacock feathers and woven pearls shines upon His head. This rare treasure of the utterly possessionless is the repose of Yasoda's heart.

Holding a golden bowl, Mother Yasoda gazes with love-filled eyes as she gives Him milk to drink, waves of joy rising within her heart.
His happy cowherd friends approach Syama, eager to play. Seeing Nanda's son drinking milk, they hide here and there.
Receiving a lovely signal from His friends, Kanhaiya longs to run to them. "Go play, my child, after drinking Your milk," Mother says, offering Him her blessing.

(Raga Bhairavi - Tina Tala)
That day Manamohana insists upon climbing into Mother's lap, but Mother does not listen and remains cheerfully occupied with household work.
The blue jewel sobs and rolls in the mud of the courtyard. Grasping her veil He says, "Mother, I will not let You out of My sight.
How will You do the housework, and how can You leave Me? If You force Me, I will cry loudly and call Father."
At that very moment Narada arrives. Beholding this matchless divine play, he is stunned, overwhelmed and submerged in an ocean of bliss at Hari's form.
He says, "Mother, what heaps of merit and what immense austerities must be yours! Bhagavan rolls in the mud, insisting upon climbing into your lap.
Brahma, Siva and Indra cannot obtain even a particle of His favor despite many efforts, yet the complete Brahman abandons all reserve and longs for your grace.
This land of Vraja and every particle of its dust are divine, meritorious and supremely blessed. Existence, consciousness and bliss Himself lives among them, uniquely intoxicated with happiness."
Overcome by love, Narada immediately loses outward awareness and rolls upon the ground. "Blessed, blessed, blessed am I today! The body of this divine sage has become fruitful."
Speaking in a choked voice, Narada praises the exquisite sweetness of Vraja's dust. Receiving prasada and absorbed in bliss, he rises and departs toward Brahma's abode.

Mother, you are innocent and know nothing of this child's deeds. What a prince of rogues is this handsome dark son of yours! My husband's sister was leaving for her in-laws' home early that morning, and I was quickly preparing auspicious cakes to give her.
My younger sister-in-law was busy applying henna to her. She was on the roof while this dark boy prowled outside. Seeing the house empty, He quietly entered. An accomplished thief, He did not allow even the faintest sound of His footsteps.
One by one He called the others inside and opened the yogurt storeroom. They all entered quietly and then closed every door. When I looked over, I saw the doors of the dairy room shut. I remained unconcerned while they worked freely inside.
In a moment they emptied every pot of sweet yogurt and butter. I do not know how many there were or how they arranged such a wondrous operation. After eating and drinking, they broke several pots without making the slightest sound. They gently opened the door and all escaped in their charming array.

I saw them fleeing and ran, quickly reaching the doorway. By then He was far away and began taunting and scolding me. The thief repeatedly showed me His thumb and laughed a wondrous laugh. All my anger vanished, and I stood gazing unblinking at His smiling face. Enchanted by His magic, I forgot that I meant to catch Him. Meanwhile they all went off dancing and laughing, crying, "Ho, ho, ho!"
[220]
(Raga Khamaja - Tina Tala)
Hari performs pranks at the watering place. With His cowherd friends He strikes the water pots with sticks, knocking them down and breaking them.
Laughing and crying "Ho, ho," they roll their eyes and perform every sweet prank. Running before and behind the girls, they come face to face, stand still and block the path.
All the cowherd women become distressed, yet inwardly every one smiles in delight. They say, "You troublesome child! Why do You behave so shamelessly every day?"

(Rajasthani)
Queen Yasomati, why do you not restrain this mischievous darling of yours, this Syama? He goes from house to house, raises an uproar and does exactly as He pleases. He awakens every sleeping child and makes those already playing cry. He ties their braids to the bedposts, then stands aside laughing as He watches them. (1)
He secretly slips in without warning and quietly enters the house. He eats every scrap, breaks the pots and flees as though terrified. (2)
When I try to catch Him, He stays beyond my grasp and twists His mouth to tease me. When I finally reach Him, He wrenches free and runs, committing great mischief. (3)

He comes in the darkness and hides, then slowly pushes the door-bolt open. Moonlight streams from every limb, destroying the darkness. (4)
The cowherd boys become His horses; climbing upon them, He stretches out His hand. He mounts the mortar, eats the butter and spills it like water. (5)
All His childhood friends eat together, and He gives the monkeys a lavish share. Rolling His eyes and twisting His mouth, He speaks in a sweet voice. (6)
He dances, sings and displays His games, delighting and exhilarating my heart again and again. This trickster steals the mind; though He commits theft, He remains a treasury of virtues. (7)
Smiling again and again, He makes me laugh, then draws out my very heart and carries it away. O Queen of Nanda, how many virtues of this little Kanha, treasure of life, can I describe? (8)

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)
Kanhaiya goes to herd the cows. A red sash wraps His waist, little bells chime there, and anklets ring upon His feet.
A peacock crown rests upon His head, earrings upon His ears and a pearl necklace upon His throat. Wondrous armlets and lovely bracelets adorn Him, and a tilaka shines upon His brow.
His yellow garment shames lightning's radiance, and His hair is curly. His lotus hands hold a golden herding stick and a lotus, completing His exquisite attire.
White, smoky gray, black, yellow and beautifully mottled cows surround Him. His friends Subala and Sridama accompany Him, while horn and flute shine at His waist.

He plays a sweet melody upon the flute. Manamohana stands in childhood form, the enchanting mine of honeyed rasa.
Great, joyful calves raise their ears and listen in wonder. Peacocks hold every limb motionless as they hear the notes and drink divine rasa.
His innocent, enchanting face shines beautifully, and His crimson lips humble all pride. His great wondrous eyes irresistibly draw away the life-breaths.
His hair curls; a jeweled crown and peacock feather rest upon His head, and lovely earrings adorn His ears. Bracelets grace His hands, a girdle His waist, and chiming anklets sing with liquid sweetness.
Merely beholding Him naturally steals sages' minds as He grants His own love. Every bond of maya breaks, and immense delusion is erased.

Seeing the sun journey toward the western mountain, Manamohana returns with the herd. He descends from Govardhana Hill, colorful and playful in ever-new ways. A delightful breeze bearing threefold fragrance touches Syama's lovely limbs. His garments and splendid flower garland flutter, revealing nature's wondrous waves.
His rows of curls humble the pride of swarms of bees, and a peacock-feather crown crowns His beauty. His large, rasa-filled, heart-stealing eyes increase joy at every moment. His flute showers abundant honeyed rasa, causing streams of rasa to surge through every direction. The blue jewel shines in lovely attire and spreads immeasurable beauty.

Introducing himself as an astrologer, he asks the auspicious time of the infant's birth. He casts a horoscope, assumes a grave expression and immediately begins predicting the result. He says, "This child was born under Mula and will uproot the entire family. He will send Gokula to the underworld and pierce everyone's heart like a thorn.
He will make a bonfire of the whole clan and destroy the entire dynasty. Therefore the only auspicious course is to destroy him. Throw him into a dreadful forest or dig the earth and bury him. He is no child but everyone's death, inauspicious, ruinous and devoid of joy."
Hearing the demon's harsh words, every man and woman becomes distressed. The fire of anger blazes within them and their breathing immediately grows heavy. At the evil speech even the inanimate objects become agitated. The consciousness pervading them enrages them too, impelling them to punish him.
A pot hanging from the ceiling rack falls with a crash upon the demon's head. A rolling pin flies into his mouth and ruins his false appearance. The grinding slab suddenly rises and begins beating him with repeated blows. The mighty demon flees screaming and weeping, his pretense collapsing.
A cot stands upright to block his path, and a pestle rises and strikes him. It pounds the demon's back flat, and he shrieks a pitiful cry. Breathless, he falls to the ground; all his books and papers tear apart. His false sacred thread breaks, his tilaka is erased and he becomes an abode of misery.
Seeing the learned man's enormous payment, women and children roll with laughter, while the elders turn aside to hide their own smiles.
