The Sweet Beauty of Sri Radha-Madhava's Divine Form

[153]

(Raga Bhairava - Tala Kaharava)

Sri Vrindavana, the Altar, the Yogapitha and the Eight-Petaled Lotus

Contemplate Sri Vrindavana in this way: filled with clusters of flowers, enchanting fragrance, streams of nectar and radiant beauty; adorned by rows of lovely trees bowing beneath their fresh leaves; shining, enveloped by newly blossomed buds and graceful vines; supremely delightful, auspicious and beautiful.

There restless bees forever hum with honeyed sound, their buzzing growing louder as they drink the nectar of the opened flowers. Cuckoos, parrots, mynas and other birds sing sweetly without cease, while intoxicated peacocks dance. Contemplate Sri Vrindavana in this way.

It is an abode of cooling delight, refreshed by droplets from Yamuna's restless waves. The lovely breeze is tinted and dusted with pollen from the filaments of blossoming lotuses. It playfully stirs the beautiful garments of Vraja's love-filled maidens and serves Sri Vrindavana eternally and without interruption.

The Wish-Fulfilling Tree

In that forest stands a wish-fulfilling tree, an abode of splendor that grants every desire. Its new leaves are coral-red, and its mature leaves gleam like sapphires. Its buds are masses of pearly light, while its magnificent fruits resemble rubies. All the seasons serve it continually and count themselves supremely blessed. Beneath that tree, which showers drops of nectar, stands a beautiful altar, made of gold and glowing like the sun rising over Mount Meru.

Its courtyard, fashioned from gems, sparkles brilliantly and shines with flower pollen. Free from the six waves, that altar is a supremely sacred place. Upon its jeweled courtyard is a magnificent yogapitha. There contemplate a beautiful crimson lotus with eight petals.

The six waves are hunger and thirst, sorrow and delusion, old age and death.

Bhagavan, the Son of Nanda

At its center sits Sri Hari, Nanda's smiling son, filled with joy. The fountainhead of compassion, He shines like the sun with His own divine radiance. The hue of His sacred form is lustrous dark blue, tender, smooth and filled with rasa, like a blue lotus, sapphire and rain cloud.

His mass of hair is black, curly, exceedingly smooth, thick and beautiful. The charming peacock-feather crown upon His head dispels the heart's affliction. He is wondrously adorned with flowers from a wish-fulfilling tree attended by bees, and wears fresh lotuses at His ears, upon which bees hum.

A splendid gorocana tilaka gleams upon His broad forehead. His bow-shaped brows, which steal the wealth of the heart, are an abode of surpassing beauty. The radiance of His face is full, stainless and measureless like the autumn moon. His eyes are broad as lotus petals, and His round cheeks resemble spotless mirrors.

They glow especially in the rays of His jeweled makara-shaped earrings. His lovely parrot-beak nose removes every sorrow from people's hearts. His crimson lips resemble bandhuka blossoms, and His smile is like the moon and jasmine. Its divine brilliance illuminates the direction before Him.

A fresh, immaculate garland fashioned from the forest's tender leaves and flowers enhances the beauty of His charming conch-like neck, the essence of delight.

A garland of parijata flowers hangs from His shoulders down to His knees. Intoxicated bees hover over it, humming ever so sweetly. His broad, powerful chest is adorned with the stars of that garland, and the sun-like Kaustubha gem shines there forever.

The pure Srivatsa mark rests upon His chest, and His noble, raised shoulders are leonine. From His beautiful divine form spreads an immaculate, enchanting fragrance. His arms are rounded and reach His knees; His navel is deep, graceful and broad. His generous abdomen bears three folds, and the line of hair upon it is beautiful as a row of bees.

Ornaments made of divine jewels adorn His sacred form: armlets, necklaces, rings, bracelets and a lovely girdle at His waist. Every limb, an abode of sweetness, is anointed with divine unguents, and His lovely hips are wrapped in a yellow garment flashing like lightning.

His thighs and knees are both enchanting, and His rounded calves are shapely. The raised foreparts of His sacred feet are supremely radiant abodes of beauty. His shining nails resemble spotless mirrors and are ruby-red. His two lotus feet, exquisitely adorned by petal-like toes, are mines of bliss.

His crimson palms and beautiful soles bear the marks of the goad, disc, conch, barleycorn, lotus, thunderbolt and banner, and liberate people from bondage. Every sweet and sacred limb is fashioned from the gathered essence of pure loveliness. His incomparable wealth of beauty forever crushes the pride of countless Cupids.

Nanda's young son plays the sweet flute at His lotus mouth and sings, creating divine melody, an ocean of joy that steals the sages' minds. Drawn by the sound of the flute, every creature of the forest gazes unblinking at His lovely face and repeatedly bows its head to the earth.

The Cowherd Boys

The cowherds match Hari in age, playfulness, virtues, ornaments, conduct, nature and dress. Restless and expert at dancing their arms, they heighten His incomparable splendor.

Standing in a circle around Syama, they sing in low, middle and high voices, and weave the sweetest strains of flute and vina into their song. Tiny children, entranced as they behold Hari's beautiful form, wear little bells upon their waistbands that ring sweetly. Adorned with tiger-claw pendants, the innocent children wander everywhere and captivate the Captivator of hearts with their sweet, indistinct speech.

The Gopis

Now perform the sweetest meditation upon Syama surrounded by the gopis, Bhagavan served by rows of supremely charming maidens of Vraja. Wearied and exhausted beneath the weight of their ample hips, they walk slowly, burdened also by their heavy breasts.

Their braided hair touches the lovely region of their hips. The line of fine hair rejoices as it rests against their breasts marked by three folds. Receiving the nectar of the flute, sovereign of rasa, the vines of their bodies are adorned with horripilation, as though the tree of love has today burst into leaves and buds.

Mohana's supremely charming, sweet, enchanting and gentle smile, like moonlight, causes the ocean of their love to swell. As though the essence of beauty appeared as droplets from its liquid waves, countless lovely beads of perspiration arise upon the cowherd maidens' limbs.

From His supremely enchanting bow-like brows, Vanamali showers sharp arrows of love that steal all awareness of body and mind. Every vital point is pierced and every limb overcome, as though unbearable love-pain has spread everywhere and transformed their color.

Abandoning fear and reserve, the maidens of Vraja remain forever eager to drink the nectar of His supremely lovely attire and the beauty of His form.

Continuation of [153]

They are like matchless rivers carrying the flood of an ocean of love, and their languid, restless eyes shine within them like lotuses. When everyone's braids loosen, masses of blooming flowers fall, and nectar-greedy bees hover over them, serving with their humming.

At that moment the maidens of Vraja speak in faltering, gentle voices. The intoxication of love's nectarean honey has overtaken them, and no composure remains. Their garments loosen from the waist-knot, and the beautiful hems reveal their lovely hips, while their swaying girdles shine splendidly.

Jeweled anklets slip from their lovely lotus feet onto the ground, breaking apart, scattering and spreading in every direction. A soft hissing sound escapes their mouths, and their tender red leaf-like lips tremble. Jeweled earrings adorn their ears, forever covered by rays of nectar.

Their two languid eyes shine beautifully like blue lotuses, long, incomparable and bud-shaped, adorned by lovely lashes. The pure fragrance of their breath keeps their tender leaf-like lips from fading. Deep crimson in hue, those lips are ever-new reservoirs of delight for Mohana.

Their soft lotus hands are always adorned with offerings dear to their Beloved. Such is that incomparable circle of gopis. The maidens of Vraja gather their large, dark, restless eyes and form of them, as it were, a lovely garland of blue lotuses.

With it they worship all Hari's limbs, serving Him perpetually in this way. They have left behind all the world's painful and impermanent objects. Beloved Bhagavan is the abode of many kinds of amorous play, and the eyes of Vraja's supremely beloved beauties are like honeybees.

Those captivating bees, filled with the nectarean rasa of love, fly all around, absorbed in drinking the honeyed rasa flowing from His enchanting lotus face. They taste and drink without ceasing and attain boundless joy, as though Hari has accepted a garland made of eye-shaped bees. The beauties of Vraja are supremely beloved, and Bhagavan is the supreme abode of love. With a pure mind free from mundane desire, perform this supremely sacred meditation.

The Cows, Calves and Bulls

Now auspiciously contemplate the fortunate cows of Gokula, whom Bhagavan tends with His own lotus hands. Wearied by the great weight of their udders, they walk slowly. Sprouts of grass remain between their teeth, yet they neither chew nor move at all.

With tails hanging down, they gaze toward Sri Hari's face. Surrounding Him, they stare without blinking, submerged in bliss. Little calves too joyfully encircle Sri Hari, while He freely sings exceedingly sweet notes upon His flute.

With ears raised they listen to that supremely sweet song. Their mouths are filled with milk, but they no longer drink it. The foaming milk flows from their mouths of its own accord. They look exceedingly charming and remove the heart's affliction.

The calves have exceptionally smooth, fragrant bodies, and their heavy dewlaps shine beautifully and give delight. With tails raised, young horns growing, they surround Madhava, striking one another's tender heads in their excited play.

They repeatedly paw the earth with soft hooves as though preparing to fight, play games of many kinds, and bellow again and again.

Their terrible roaring agitates all the directions. Burdened by great humps, their bodies rub together as they walk. The massive bulls raise both ears to hear the flute's call. Supremely fortunate are those animals who enjoy Hari's company at all times.

The Gods, Sages and Yogis

Beyond the circle of gopis, cowherds and animals stand the wise gods. Brahma, Hara, Indra and the others sing His glory in graceful meters. Sages devoted to study of the Vedas and aspiring to steadfast dharma stand outside the circle to the south, forever indifferent to sense objects.

Behind them stand the great sages Sanaka and his brothers, sovereign yogis, along with other seekers of liberation absorbed in samadhi and equipped with every discipline.

The Divine Sage Narada

Then contemplate the foremost divine sage stationed in the sky: Narada, son of Brahma, whose fair body resembles the moon and a conch. Knower of all revealed traditions, he bears yellow matted locks like lightning and cherishes exceptionally pure love for Hari's lotus feet.

Renouncing all association, he sings Hari's virtues. Wise Narada praises Him eternally in many melodious notes aligned with the srutis. Expressing the graceful scales and modes of diverse musical systems, this mine of the jewel of loving devotion perpetually delights Hari.

The Fruit of Meditation

The supremely wise and pure-minded who, free from mundane passion and attachment, meditate lovingly upon Sri Krishnachandra, the son of Nanda, forever delight Hari. He showers immeasurable grace upon them and grants the exceedingly rare gift of divine love, the essence of every essence.

The master of dance holds fresh butter in His hand. The giver of all joy, filled with sweet and innocent childhood feeling, dances endlessly with His friends.

A sash is tied at His waist, His flute is tucked beneath His arm, His hair curls and He wears a peacock feather. A necklace rests upon His throat; tiger-claw pendant, armlets and the radiance of His garland shine enchantingly.

His sweet eyes captivate the sages' hearts, and His jeweled earrings are exceedingly beautiful and praiseworthy. The tilaka upon His brow is matchlessly lovely, and the moon of His beauty steals the cakora-like eyes of His people.

(Raga Kafi - Tala Kaharava)

The loveliness of Krishna's limbs is sweeter than sweetness itself. Within it, the moon of His face is matchless and filled with supreme beauty.

Sweeter than what is sweet, and sweeter still than the sweetest, is the honeyed, nectarean, moonlight-filled gentle smile upon His lovely face.

Every particle of the sweet moonlight of that smile is exceedingly sweet. Pervading the three worlds, it makes everything sweet.

[156]

(Raga Pilu - Tina Tala)

His body is dark blue like a rain-laden cloud, and His lotus face overflows with rasa. He wears yellow cloth, a peacock-feather crown upon His head and a splendid tilaka upon His brow.

Anklets adorn His feet, earrings His ears, and necklaces and a forest garland His throat. Holding the sweet flute in His hand, the beloved boy stands in a graceful threefold-bending pose.

Stealing the sages' minds, delighting the people's hearts, His large unblinking eyes gaze forth. The sweet young Gopala stands innocent and overflowing with tender feeling.

(Raga Kafi - Tala Kaharava)

Exceedingly sweet, enchanting and beautiful, His peacock feather shines splendidly. Dancing in the Malaya breeze, it captivates every heart. Loose curls upon His cheeks shine like young serpents, while the mass of His curled hair resembles a rasa-filled swarm of bees.

His face shines like a blossoming blue lotus and an emerald gem. His chin is anointed with sandal paste and splendidly marked by a drop of musk. Pure, shapely elephant pearls and the rays of His earrings glitter at His ears, and an exceedingly bright radiance adorns His rain-cloud-dark cheeks.

His two crimson palms resemble fully opened terrestrial lotuses. Between them His beautifully formed flute shines like a pure lotus stalk. His blue body, the bright pearl necklace and crimson Kaustubha form an auspicious confluence of Kalindi, Ganga and Sarasvati.

His Vaijayanti forest garland sways down to His knees. As He walks, His enchanting, sweet and graceful gait seems to dance. Yellow cloth wraps His waist, little bells chime, and anklets sound at His feet. Their supremely delicious honey-nectar restores the death-like minds of sages to life.

His sweet lips put the bimba fruit to shame, and His flute showers rasa, for which sages, seers, Brahma, Siva and Indra forever yearn. Among the countless beings in the entire universe, there is no human, demon or god who would not be enchanted after beholding this supernatural form for even a moment.

[158]

(Doha)

His body is dark blue like a fresh rain cloud, and His form enchants the three worlds. His incomparable curls, a dark Krishna-cloud, humble the pride of bees. His hair is tied high beneath a jeweled crown adorned by a lovely peacock feather. His two restless eyes steal the heart, and His curved brows are beautiful.

The sweet flute shines upon His lips, and splendid yellow cloth wraps His waist. Garlands of gunja berries, pearls and forest flowers grace His throat. His supremely beautiful form is made of pure consciousness, and every limb ornaments its ornaments. Hundreds upon hundreds of millions of Cupids blush to behold His incomparable face. Treasure of Radha, lover of Radha, foundation of Radha's life, I bow again and again to Mohana's feet, which steal the sages' minds.

(Raga Kafi - Tala Kaharava)

Syama's supremely enchanting body is dark blue like a rain-laden cloud, beautiful as a tamala leaf anointed with gorocana. His rounded arms extend to His knees and humble the pride of Cupid. Adorned with bracelets, armlets and other ornaments, they are supremely lovely and excellent.

Encircled by strands of gunja berries and beautifully arrayed with wondrous flowers, His jeweled crown rests upon His topknot and bears a fresh peacock feather. Rows of curly locks kiss His dark cheeks, and the charming light of His earrings gleams upon their radiance.

His crimson lips steal the beauty of bimba fruits and bandhuka flowers, and gracefully hold the sweet flute. His sweetest smile enchants the three worlds and bestows immense joy. A pearl-gem shines splendidly at the tip of His nose.

His eyes, forever beautified, are pierced by the arrows of the gopis' sidelong glances, while the movement of His brows drives the gopis mad. Naturally renouncing every enjoyment, they remain absorbed in constant service to His happiness. Their matchless minds desire only the happiness of Syama and Syama's beloved.

Upon His beautiful neck, adorned by three lines, play pure scales joined with melody, ragas and raginis.

We are utterly unfit, unqualified and most fallen. Moved by Your natural mercy, accept us, O bearer of the flute! Give us the dust of the feet of those loving devotees' devotees who remain forever absorbed in serving the lotus feet of the Divine Couple.

Sweet, exquisitely sweet, sweeter than that, supremely sweet, and sweeter still, sweetest of the sweet, forever increasing and sweet in every place. All glory to Vrsabhanu's tender daughter, who dwells in Hari's heart!

Her fair face has the color of lightning and blue cloth adorns Her body. Her bimba-fruit lips and sweet smile steal Madhava's heart. Every limb is filled with beauty; accompanied by Her sweet companions, She wanders with a heart full of delight, bringing happiness to Her Beloved.

Abandoning worldly and Vedic reserve and leaving Her fortunate relatives, She sings in raga Vihaga for Hari's pleasure and roams intoxicated. She is a fish in the waters of Her Beloved's happiness, wholly without desire for Her own joy. Though a treasury of virtues, beloved Radhika has made Herself humble.

[177]

(Raga Suha - Tina Tala)

The golden-complexioned maiden steals Madhava's heart. Radha twists Her brows slightly and casts a glance from Her dark, reddish eyes. Anklets grace Her feet, red lac adorns both soles, and the sound of Her girdle seems steeped in honeyed rasa.

She possesses all eight and their further auspicious transformations. Among Her Beloved's queens and lovers She is foremost, endowed with complete self-offering. Sweet helplessness beneath love, perpetual fondness for secret rendezvous and absorption in remembrance of Her Beloved; dwelling in ever-new bowers, honey-voiced, possessed of supreme majesty, pure and humble;

like a honeybee filled with possessive love, She drinks the sweet rasa of Her Beloved's lotus feet. Her one exclusive sense of self is: "I am Syama's inseparable beloved."

The supreme Couple are one reality in two forms. Like the pupil and the liquid waves of the eye, Their forms are neither separate nor simply identical.

Like the radiant moon and its moonlight, like fire and its burning power, They are one. Supremely generous, They naturally distribute the rasa of Their own nature and remain true to Their vow.

[180]

(Raga Desa - Tina Tala)

Both are forever complete in one rasa. They have one life, one mind, one feeling and one beautiful color of love.

Their goal is one, Their means one, and They hold one perfection in mind. Each tastes in the other the very same supremely pure divine rasa.

Their delight is one, Their consciousness one, and Their desire corresponds as one. The One becomes two, forever sporting together in a single play.

The love between Them is beginningless and wondrous. It is the supremely sweet embodiment of affection, pure and filled with conscious bliss.

The beginningless divine Couple, exceedingly beautiful, transcend mind and speech. No equal to this enchanting pair has existed, exists now, or ever shall exist.

They are eternally lover and beloved, forever one though embodied as two. Forever intoxicated by the rasa of the rasa dance, yet free from mundane intoxication, They love one another perfectly.

The two embodiments of rasa manifest in Vraja's bowers to delight rasika souls. There They eternally perform graceful, transcendent play, the banner of rasa.

O two treasures of rasa, make me Your servant through causeless and immense affection. Forever keep me at Your feet, removing the poisonous objects of sense enjoyment.

They are filled with divine play, are Themselves that play and delight in it: two eternal divine bodies, beyond material embodiment.

Radha gazes unblinking upon Syama's beauty, motionless like a cakori beholding the moon. Seeing the lotus of Radha's face, Syamasundara's intoxicated bee-like eyes remain absorbed in drinking its dense nectar-rasa.

Everything is divine play and filled with play; divine play fills all places. They forever remain filled with divine play and perform its many wondrous varieties. Their vision, conversation and touch are eternally sweet, and Their feelings ever new. Every meeting is fresh, the desire to meet perpetual, and the delight of tasting rasa forever renewed.

[198]

(Tune: Lavani - Tala Kaharava)

The lovely bower of wish-fulfilling trees is adorned by rows of fragrant flowers. Its delightful jeweled seat is a lotus whose petals are the multitude of divine descents. To give one another happiness, They have beautifully adorned every limb. Sweet, enchanting Radha and Madhava, the One become two, shine together.

Feeling from Their hearts overflows upon Their faces, filled with modesty and reserve. No words emerge from either mouth, though the desire to speak surges within. They are supremely beautiful treasuries of sweetness's nectar and the boundless ocean of every rasa's nectar. Glory to rasa-filled Radha! Glory to supremely generous Madhava, crown jewel of rasikas!

[199]

(Raga Asavari - Tina Tala)

The supreme rasika shines beside the embodiment of rasa. They grace a bower fashioned from tender leaves, flowers and vines.

His dark blue rain-cloud body ripples in immeasurable, endless waves. The treasury of skill in the arts of the rasa dance stands proudly in a threefold-bending pose.

His golden-hued, joy-giving and graceful darling remains forever beside Him. They resemble a rain cloud and lightning flashing in fresh blue and yellow colors.

Their honeyed, rasa-filled rasa dance abounds in many arrangements of stimulus and feeling. He places the flute to His sweet lips, unfolding enchanting melody and deep attachment.

(Raga Bhimapalasi - Tala Kaharava)

Beside steady lightning, a restless rain cloud incessantly showers rasa. Nanda's son is a great emerald amid a multitude of golden gems. Sri Nandalala shines like an enchanted bee among lotus petals. The beloved crown jewel of rasikas, filled with rasa, eternally sports beside each one.

[201]

(Raga Bihaga - Tina Tala)

Syama and His beloved shine within the bower. Their fair and dark lotus faces are matchless masses of beauty and joy.

Scattered rows of curly locks spread across Their lovely cheeks. Syama's left arm shines around the incomparable neck of His beloved.

The eyes of each become bees upon the other's lotus face. They exchange the nectar-rasa of Their very lives, shaming countless Cupids.

Pure sakhis and manjaris filled with love stand on every side. Beholding the enchanting, sweet beauty of the Couple, their hearts overflow with delight.

[202]

(Raga Desa - Tina Tala)

When Syama and His beloved meet, immense love surges forth. It is as though radiant, rasa-filled gold has embraced an emerald gem.

It is as though a lovely young tamala tree is encircled by a golden vine, or golden lightning, filled with rasa, has joined a fresh rain cloud.

It is as though a luscious lotus has entered a honeyed union with a bee. Both are supremely joyful, Their bodies thrilling beneath waves of love.

Each bestows upon the other the nectar of love's rasa. The One was becoming two; now the two wise Ones have again become one.

[203]

(Raga Asavari - Tala Kaharava)

She is a lovely fair moon of limitless pure radiance; Syama has defeated countless Cupids. The dark divine cloud, filled with celestial water, shines beside divine lightning. Waves of ever-new sweetness, the essence of nectarean rasa, unfold upon every limb. Fragrant, enchanting flower garlands sway upon both Their breasts.

Their curved brows and restless eyes eternally draw Them toward one another. Manifesting separately as two beneath the power of profound love, They forever shower love. Each eternally loves the other; each is the other's pure and dearest beloved. Each naturally gives the other the supremely excellent rasa of love's happiness.

Each possesses a renunciation beyond the utmost limit of supreme self-denial. Each is the other's beloved worthy of service, and each the other's pure, most fortunate servant. No one anywhere can know which is the woman and which the lover. Without distinction of enjoyer and enjoyed, They eternally delight in great, naturally beautiful love.

May my mind, understanding and life forever be offered at both Their lotus feet. May both remain mine forever, the life of my eternally beloved life-breaths.
