Madhuparka is an essential offering in the sixteenfold rite of worship. It is presented in the adoration of the Lord. Although made by blending honey, yogurt, clarified butter, and other substances, its sweetness and effect are distinctive from those of any ingredient alone. This collection of songs has a similarly elevated sweetness and deeper influence, and for that reason it has been named Madhupaka.
All these songs are in Braj Bhāṣā and were composed by different devotee-poets. Braj possesses a vast and excellent song literature, greatly enriched by those poets. Although the songs have many authors, the distinctive manner in which they have been arranged gives this anthology a special sweetness and force.
The saint whose līlās were transcribed in this book also selected these fifty-five songs from the immense Braj corpus and arranged them in a deliberate sequence. Their inherent quality makes the collection supremely beneficial to all. They have been ordered so that the eightfold daily līlā of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava runs through them naturally. According to the saint, these perfected songs will assist the awakening of devotional feeling and illuminate the path into the realm of bhāva.
At the request of close devotees, these fifty-five songs are being published together with the nectar-filled līlās of Śrī Rādhā-Mādhava. To make their meaning accessible, each song is accompanied by a bhāvārtha. If limited understanding or ability has prevented that explanation from conveying the song’s heart, humble forgiveness is requested. May this Madhupaka help the devotee attain and perfect divine sweetness. This is the heartfelt aspiration.

With joy the sakhīs offer auspicious ārati. Auspicious is the palace-bower of Vṛndāvana, and auspicious the forms of the Beloved and His darling. Blessed songs and melodies fill the air; vīṇā and mṛdaṅga sound delightfully. Blessed is the lovely company of sakhīs and the intoxicating fragrance of incense. Every eternal festival there bestows welfare, overflowing with delight, play, and rapture. At the bower door the maiden and Her Beloved stand with arms around one another. Their restless eyelids close and open, and in their rapture They no longer notice where veil or shawl has fallen. Heavy with divine languor, They lean upon each other. Whenever They yawn, fragrance spreads as though nectar were spilling from Their lotus mouths. Curls lie scattered upon Their cheeks and beads of perspiration shine upon Their faces. Sarasamādhurī says: the bee-like sakhīs drink this streaming nectar yet never find satisfaction.

Victory to Śrī Rādhikā, accomplisher of every joy, jewel among maidens, eternally fresh in youth. She is the cātaka bird longing for the rain cloud of Kṛṣṇa’s dark form and the cakora bird devoted to the moonbeams of His face. She is the lotus where the bee of His mind finds rest, the silken cord that binds the deer of His eyes, the bee drinking the nectar of His love, and one immersed in the ocean of rasa arising from praise of His qualities. Her state is wondrous: Her limbs are fair, yet Her mind is dyed dark with Śyāma. Though expert in all sixty-four arts, She remains utterly innocent. Her mind never turns from Her Lord, yet She perpetually steals His mind. Gadādhara says: Her glory is infinite and my understanding small, so how could Her true nature be described?

Friend, see how beautifully the youthful son of Vraja’s king stands beside the trysting banyan. Gaze without blinking upon His attire: the tilt of His crown enchants all three worlds. After love-filled rāsa play, beads of perspiration shine upon Him, curls and eyelids droop, and longing for rasa fills Him. Fortunate indeed is King Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter, upon whose shoulder He rests His arm. Fresh creepers sway above jewel-studded ground, and no words can contain the beauty of the bowers. They are the embodied minds of sages who assumed such forms to receive Kṛṣṇa’s footprints. This wondrous form crowns every happiness. By the grace of Hari’s devotees, Gadādhara Miśra continually sings Kṛṣṇa’s virtues.

His sash and many-colored shawl combine fresh tulasī leaves with roses, marigolds, and jasmine. Behold the extraordinary floral attire in which His darling has adorned Him today.

At dawn Rādhikā comes to Yaśodā’s home. Laughing happily, Mother says, “Darling, by Vṛṣabhānu’s name, churn a little yogurt.” Rādhā obediently takes the churning rope but turns it in an empty pot, for Her mind is fixed where Kanhāī stands. Kṛṣṇa looks toward Her and, forgetting the cow, binds the bull’s legs for milking. Yaśodā silently observes the innocent cleverness of Their mutual love. Sūradāsa asks: who could describe the Couple’s absorption?

Mother asks, “Darling, who taught you to churn? The churn is in one place, the pot in another, and your mind somewhere else. Have you shown how you churn at home, or did you forget everything upon entering mine?” The Maiden replies, “I do not know how. You placed me under oath, so I came and merely obeyed your words.” Nandarānī demonstrates the proper motion, but Rādhā keeps Her attention fixed upon Śyāma’s face.

Their love has revealed itself and can no longer remain concealed. The instant Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter looks toward Kṛṣṇa, Their minds become so entangled that They cannot draw them apart. Kṛṣṇa frees the calf tied in the cattle pen, then loses all bodily awareness. He binds the bull’s legs as though to milk it while the cows wander away. His friends laugh, “Kanhaiyā, what are You milking?” When Their four eyes meet, a powerful attraction rises in both hearts. Sūradāsa says: my Lord is an expert in love, but at the sight of accomplished Rādhikā all His cleverness disappears.

Beloved Rādhikā, daughter of King Vṛṣabhānu, has Hari milk the cow, and he fulfills the longing of her heart. Both become immersed in the ocean of one another's gestures and emotions, while Lalitā beholds their splendor. As he milked, love swelled with overwhelming force. Śrī Kṛṣṇa milked with such artistry that one stream entered the pail while another reached the place where Priyājī stood. Flowing from Mohana's hands and falling upon enchanting Rādhikā's face, the stream created an intense beauty, as though a rain cloud dark as Śyāma repeatedly showered the moon under the pressure of monsoon love. The watching sakhīs became distraught with affection, their hearts scorched by desire. All fell under the sway of love for Sūradāsa's Lord, and their minds turned away from every household task.

She returned among her sakhīs while Śrī Kṛṣṇa continued toward Vraja. Hari and Rādhā sit together in their grove dwelling, immersed in their own delight. Raising the flute to his lips, Kṛṣṇa sounds a melody in rāga Sāraṅga. Though Mohana is wise, supremely clever, and a treasury of musical virtue, he deliberately plays one phrase incorrectly. His beloved, mistress of every art and excellence, takes up the vīṇā and renders that phrase correctly in a wonderfully fresh way. Beloved Śrī Kṛṣṇa had wanted Śrī Rādhā to play and therefore intentionally erred upon the flute.

The gopī complains that enemy eyelids will not let her behold Śrī Kṛṣṇa's splendor without interruption. When she gazes upon Giridharalāla's face, they fall between like bars of thunderbolt. Śrī Kṛṣṇa returns from the forest playing his flute, his locks made uniquely beautiful by the dust raised beneath the cows' feet. A crown rests upon his head, jeweled earrings shine at his ears, and their reflections gleam upon his lovely cheeks. "Sakhī, why has lotus-born Brahmā placed such an obstacle before the vision of that beautiful face?" Nandadāsa says that insentient things are all alike. The poor fish dies for water, yet water gives no thought to it. How then could lotus-born Brahmā, himself inert, care for us?

Śrī Rādhe, the arching of your brows has bent Kṛṣṇa into his lovely threefold form. Beautiful one, when you lined your eyes with collyrium and looked toward him, that very glance turned him dark. At your smile, lightning seems to flash across his heart. Humbled, he indistinctly repeats "Rādhā, Rādhā" and begs you for love. However you wish Hari to dance, in that very way he dances. I surrender to you. Show mercy now and come to the secluded grove. Nandadāsa says: if you command me, I shall call Lord Kṛṣṇa, for each watch spent at your home passes like an age for him.

Beloved friend, set down your feet very softly so your anklets do not ring. The people of Vraja are still awake, and it is not proper that they hear them. O obstinate one, heed me a little. I beg you with grass between my teeth. Until we reach the forest paths shaded by dense bowers, cover your face and walk toward Nanda's prince, crest jewel of connoisseurs. Nandadāsa says: beloved Śrī Rādhā, do not remain apart from the Lord even for a moment. O accomplished Rādhikā, today your beauty shines with still greater splendor. Pearls gleam along the parting of your hair, curls play upon your face, and a blue garment like a bank of clouds adorns you, the treasury of beauty and virtue. The fine line of collyrium in your eyes is sharp as an arrowhead; your slender braid puts even a serpent to shame, while the tilaka upon your brow appears as an unwavering line of good fortune. Your nose is lovely as a parrot's beak, your lips red as bandhūka blossoms, your teeth like pomegranate seeds, and a dark beauty-mark rests upon your chin. Bracelets, bangles, rings, and the pendant ornament at your nose proclaim you a treasury of love's arts. Jeweled earrings, a flashing girdle, strings of pearls upon your bodice, almost-silent anklets, and toenails bright as moons complete your adornment. A supreme fragrance arises from your body and deepens tender love in the heart. Kṛṣṇadāsa says that when you sing a noble rāga in your sweet voice, you bring Giridhārī Lāla entirely under your sway.

On the Yamunā's bank, within a cane-bower, connoisseur Hari and Rādhikā form the circle of the rāsa. New kadamba, bakula, and mālatī blossoms open without number, and swarms of bees, drawn by their sweetness, hum softly. A pure breeze brushes the flower clusters; under its touch the green trees sway as though waving fly-whisks on every side. Mynahs, parrots, cuckoos, and many lovely birds call, while dancing peacocks captivate the heart. The ever-moving breeze is cool, gentle, and fragrant. It stirs the waves of the dark Yamunā, where lotuses of many kinds bloom and cakravākas, royal swans, and waterfowl utter melodious cries.
The circular golden dais of the rāsa, inset with many jewels, appears like an earring adorning the earth. Flutes, vīṇās and other stringed instruments, mouth-harps, and noble mṛdaṅgas join in a single sweet harmony. Lost in rasa, Vṛṣabhānu's daughter and Giridhārī dance. The beauty of their faces makes even Rati and Kāma lose awareness. The trembling crown, the fluttering yellow cloth, and the rhythmic syllables “tatta theī theī” dispel every sorrow. The flash of their teeth, the radiance of their smiles, the splendor of every limb, and their exquisite crimson lips are beyond comparison. Lotus eyes move restlessly beside curling locks that hang like rows of bees.
Each movement of the dance, lāga, ḍāṭa, urapa, uramei, and tirapa, is wondrous. They sing together in finely structured melodies and, delighted with one another, exclaim, “I am offered wholly to you!” Noble necklaces shine upon their lovely breasts, jeweled earrings and ornaments grace their ears. Fair Rādhā in blue and dark Kṛṣṇa in yellow seem like lightning and a rain cloud vying with one another. Around them stand sakhīs slender as golden campaka vines, each moon-faced maiden surpassing the next. Dancing in a circle, they have fixed their minds upon the two divine forms and forgotten all awareness of themselves. Thus the two crowns of connoisseurs dance eternally with Lalitā and the other graceful companions. Vṛndāvanadeva prays: O beloved son of Vraja's king, O cherished daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, my very life, dwell forever in the lotus of my heart.

Friend, what fresh young beauty is as clever and accomplished as Rādhikā? No maiden possesses beauty, virtues, a beloved's love, and good fortune like hers. All the princesses of Varuṇa's realm, Nāgaloka, the earthly world, and heaven may be offered for but one hair upon the beloved's body. Nandanandana, source of bliss, is so absorbed in her play of rasa that he arranges the rāsa to bestow delight upon her. Priyājī dances with such consummate skill that her beloved watches in astonishment. Proud of her sustaining power, a rasika such as Vyāsa fears no one. He has cast aside worldly and Vedic claims, rites and duties, and all four kinds of liberation.

Whose nose ornament is the lovelier? Beloved Kṛṣṇa and cherished Rādhikā each speak their heart and enter into a contest over whose ornament holds greater beauty. The judgment is placed before Lalitā: she must say impartially which is exquisite and which seems pale beside it. Nandadāsa says that Lalitā answers with great hesitation, “If you will not take offense, to my understanding Lāḍilījī's ornament steals the heart a little more.”

O Rādhārānī, your face is a lotus and my eyes are bees. If they do not behold you, my eyelids cannot close even for an instant. My eyes grow desperately restless for your sight, and even when drawn away they refuse to turn elsewhere. Drinking the honeyed nectar of your beauty, they become so absorbed that they never glance to either side. Bhagavatrāsika says that they have grown mad, so intoxicated by your beauty that they wander forever reeling.

Night and day they ache to meet you; even while remaining united with you, they feel as though no meeting had ever occurred. Bhagavatrāsika says that none but a rasika can understand the speech of a rasika.

Friend, how wondrously Nandakumāra is adorned today. Vṛṣabhānu's daughter sits at his left, while Lalitā and the other sakhīs sing at the great doorway. In their lotus hands they hold golden trays laden with pearl necklaces and garlands of flowers. A tilaka of red powder shines upon the couple's brows, and the companions perform ārati in boundless joy. All the women of Vraja bless this pair to abide eternally in Vṛndāvana. The two reign within the grove-palace, and Paramānandadāsa offers himself to them.

Rādhā's eyes, restless as khañjana birds, grow intoxicated from drinking her beloved's nectarous beauty. So lovely, quick, and sharply pointed are they that the cage of her eyelids cannot hold them even for a moment. Again and again they fly toward her ears, only to turn back when caught in the snare of her earrings. Sūradāsa imagines that only the cord of collyrium restrains them; otherwise they would already have flown beyond her ears and reached the beloved.
