English translation
(The place is Prasannatā Sarovara, the Lake of Gladness. It is evening, with two hours remaining before twilight. The rays of the setting sun fall upon the lake, whose water shimmers. Gopīs fill their vessels at the beautiful jeweled ghāṭa. Some return with water while others arrive to draw it.
Vṛṣabhānu's daughter Śrī Rādhā approaches slowly, holding a golden pitcher against Her side. Śrī Lalitā walks to Her right and Śrī Viśākhā to Her left, each carrying a golden pitcher. More sakhīs follow. Rādhā walks, pauses, then walks again, until in this halting way She reaches the ghāṭa and stands there.)

English translation
(A crowd has gathered some distance west of the ghāṭa. Several cowherd boys and gopīs with pitchers upon their heads stand in a circle. Rādhā notices them.)
"Lalitā, go and see what this crowd is."
(Lalitā goes, remains there briefly, then runs back drenched in perspiration.)
"Rādhā, what can I tell You? Come. Oh, what can I possibly say?"
"Why? What has happened?"
Taking Rādhā's hand, Lalitā says, "Just come and see. We shall return and fill the pitchers afterward."

English translation
(Lalitā leads Rādhā to the gathering. Seeing King Vṛṣabhānu's darling daughter, the gopīs step aside and give Her the foremost place. In the center of the crowd They see a yoginī seated upon the upper step of the ghāṭa, singing almost without outward consciousness in an exceedingly sweet voice aligned with her tānpūrā. Her eyes are closed as though she were entering samādhi. She is dark-complexioned and about fourteen years old. Sacred ash covers her forehead, yet incomparable beauty and grace shine through it.)

Braj Bhāṣā song
English translation
Beloved, I shall keep You within my very eyes.
For the beauty of a single hair upon You, I would offer this body countless times.
(Śrī Rādhā stands like a wooden image listening. Again and again the yoginī repeats to the tānpūrā:)
"Within my eyes I shall keep You, Beloved, within my very eyes."

English translation
(As though returning to awareness, Rādhā leaves the crowd and sits beside henna bushes upon the embankment, though Her gaze remains fixed upon the yoginī. Lalitā, Viśākhā, and the others join Her.)
In a choked voice Rādhā asks, "Lalitā, why does a yoginī sing such a hymn?"
"What kind of hymn?"
With slight irritation Rādhā says, "Can you not hear it?"
Lalitā smiles. "Now I understand."
"Then tell Me why she sings it. Look at her, Lalitā. Such beauty, such loveliness, and then such a hymn. How will she preserve her yoga?"
Original
English translation
The yoginī sings in an exquisitely sweet elaboration, "Beloved, I shall keep You within my very eyes."
(Distracted again, Rādhā glances at Lalitā.)
Lalitā laughs softly. "You are so innocent. This is called a hymn to the attributeless Absolute. Renunciant sādhus sing such songs."
The yoginī raises her voice, "Destroy every break, O Dark One..."
(Drops of perspiration appear upon Rādhā's face and Her whole body trembles. Lalitā supports Her.)
Original
English translation
Wiping Rādhā's face with her veil, Lalitā says lovingly, "My foolish friend, this yoginī's Dark One is not Your Śyāmasundara. When she sings of ‘Beloved’ and ‘Dark One,’ she meditates upon the light within her own limbs. Do You understand?"
(Rādhā listens silently. The hymn ends. The yoginī gently rests the tānpūrā upon her shoulder and sits with closed eyes as though absorbed in samādhi.)
"Lalitā, I do not know why, but this yoginī seems very dear to Me. My mind is being irresistibly drawn toward her. Ask where she lives."
"Why, do You intend to become a yoginī?"
"Lalitā, you jest while My heart..."
"Do not be angry. I shall ask her now."

English translation
(Lalitā approaches, bows at the yoginī's feet, and supports herself with her hands. The yoginī opens her eyes, cries, "Alakh! Alakh!" and assumes a grave expression.)
Humbly Lalitā asks, "Mother Yoginī, where do you live?"
"Alakh! What will you do with that knowledge?"
"One of my friends has developed deep devotion to you and wishes to know."
"If she needs to know, she will ask for herself. Huh!"
"She is shy, so she sent me."
"Alakh! Where have I become trapped?"
(The yoginī closes her eyes. Lalitā questions her for a while, but when she will not reopen them Lalitā returns. Rādhā continues gazing at the yoginī.)

English translation
"Very well, I shall find out Myself."
(Rādhā approaches the yoginī. The crowd has thinned until only Her sakhīs and two or three other gopīs remain.)
With anger and disdain in Her voice, Rādhā says, "You yoginī, where have you come from? Your eyes are filled with passion, yet you wear the costume of renunciation. Your yoga will not endure."
(The yoginī opens her eyes.)
"You are young, your mind immature, and you possess such incomparable beauty. Why assume this disguise?"
(The yoginī repeats, "Alakh! Alakh!")
"Truly, your eyes reveal a desire within your mind. Desire for enjoyment, but the dress of renunciation. How remarkable!"
(The yoginī loudly cries, "Alakh! Alakh!")
Original
English translation
With contempt Rādhā says, "Nothing has yet been ruined. Come with Me to the palace and tell Me truthfully what you desire."
(The yoginī cries "Alakh!" and bursts into laughter. Citrā gently takes Rādhā and pushes Her a little distance away.)
After whispering that Rādhā should say no more, Citrā tells the yoginī, "Mother, my friend is very restless, but Her heart is utterly simple. Please do not take offense."
Laughing, the yoginī answers, "Alakh! She is King Vṛṣabhānu's darling. Naturally there is pride in Her heart. She is a princess, so She tests a yoginī, jokes with a yoginī, and tempts a yoginī with worldly enjoyment. Huh!"
Original
English translation
(Laughing, Rādhā returns, sits beside the yoginī, and lovingly takes one of her hands. The yoginī trembles.)
"Yoginī, are you angry?"
"Alakh! Is a yoginī ever angry?"
With innocent feeling Rādhā says, "You truly seem very dear to Me, and so I jested."
"Alakh! Your joke brought you pleasure. What else do you need?"
Eagerly Rādhā asks, "Will you grant Me one request?"
"Speak."
"Come with Me to My royal residence."
(The yoginī bursts into laughter.)
Original
English translation
"Why do you laugh?"
"Alakh! You say something laughable, and I should not laugh?"
"Is there some sin in coming to My palace?"
Laughing heartily, the yoginī says, "Alakh! You are a princess and I a yoginī. What relation could there be between us?"
Growing sad, Rādhā says, "Evening is approaching. You must spend the night somewhere."
"I shall spend it in the forest. Why would I go to a palace?"
(Lalitā sits beside the yoginī.)

English translation
Lalitā says, "Mother Yoginī, I have heard that God cherishes His devotees' wishes. You are a yoginī and have met God, so surely you too should hear my friend's prayer."
"Alakh! You are innocent. I am a yoginī. I must steady my posture and control my mind, sustaining life upon forest fruits. I have renounced the world, yet you ask me to enter a palace. How could such a request be granted?"
"Why invent false excuses? Tell Me truly, have you never stayed in a palace?"
Growing serious, she says, "Of course I have, many times."
"Then what harm would come from staying with Me for a few days?"
Original
English translation
"Alakh! What can I tell You?"
Taking her hand again, Rādhā says, "Tell Me without hesitation why you will not come."
"Alakh! Where have I become trapped?"
"My heart overflows upon seeing you. By My oath, tell Me the obstacle and I shall remove it."
"Alakh!"
"You must tell Me. I shall not release you today without an answer."
Laughing, the yoginī softly hums:
"I hunger not for food, nor does any other thing please the mind.
Welcome the supremely beautiful One, the treasure and refuge within us."
Hopefully Rādhā says, "Then come just once. If there is difficulty, you may return."
"Alakh! Where have I become trapped?"
"Only with ordinary questions. We shall not torment you."

English translation
Signaling Lalitā to catch the yoginī's arm, Rādhā says, "We shall not release you now. I shall certainly take you with Me for tonight's lodging."
(Lalitā catches her arm. The yoginī pretends to be greatly perplexed, then swiftly frees herself.)
"You do not understand. Will you ruin our spiritual practice in this way?"
"Come now. You merely speak of spiritual practice, using it as a pretext to mislead Us. I understand everything you say."
"Darling of Vṛṣabhānu, not today. Tomorrow. I promise to come tomorrow."
"I shall not let you go. Who knows whether you will flee? What assurance is there of tomorrow?"
Original
English translation
(Lalitā sits beside the yoginī and whispers something into Rādhā's ear in a disappointed voice.)
"Mother Yoginī, why is your heart so hard? Must one still practice after attaining God? Why do you deceive us?"
Somewhat embarrassed, the yoginī says, "You are still children and cannot understand the truth."
Sadly Rādhā answers, "Perhaps I do not understand, but I know perfectly well that at present you are only making grand excuses."

English translation
Trying to please Rādhā, the yoginī says, "Darling of Vṛṣabhānu, do not be annoyed. We yoginīs must consider the welfare and example of the world. Suppose I consent briefly. Nothing would happen to me. But if, following my example, other young yoginīs began entering palaces and accepting the service of obstinate girls like You, would that not create disaster? Consider it Yourself."
(Rādhā says nothing.)
"Are You angry?"
"There is no question of anger. I saw you for the first time today, yet My mind has been irresistibly drawn toward you. I feel an intense longing to take you home, and that is why I ask."

(The yoginī acts as though pondering.)
Lalitā says, "Mother, accept my prayer. In all your life you have never received, nor will you ever receive, the service of a maidservant whose heart is as simple as my friend's."
"Alakh! Very well, let us go. What else can I do? One must please innocent girls like you."
(Filled with joy, Rādhā takes the yoginī by the shoulder. Rather than use the main entrance, She leads her through the garden gate into Her bedchamber and respectfully seats her upon Her golden bed. Rādhā gazes as though wishing to drink in the yoginī's beauty.)

English translation
"Yoginī, until today I believed there was only one beautiful person in the world. From where have you acquired precisely the same beauty? Yoginī, one thing..."
(The yoginī closes her eyes.)
Rādhā quietly asks Lalitā, "I do not know how to honor a yoginī as a guest. What shall We do?"
Viśākhā whispers, "Do not worry. I know. When Sāraṅga Bābā came, I watched everything Mother Kīrti did and shall do the same. He was a yogī and this is a yoginī. It is all one matter."
(Rādhā is pleased and whispers something to Viśākhā.)

(She brings a beautiful golden basin. Lalitā stands holding a fine cloth, while Citrā waits with a golden water vessel.)
"Mother Yoginī, bless us by permitting us to wash your feet."
(Crying "Alakh!" the yoginī places her feet in the basin.)
Viśākhā whispers, "Say that today we have been fulfilled."
"Yoginī, today We have been fulfilled."
"Alakh!"
(They wash and dry her feet. Rādhā suddenly trembles and stares in wonder at the soles. Citrā places a golden glass of sherbet in Her hand.)
Original
English translation
(At Viśākhā's signal Rādhā raises the sherbet toward the yoginī's lips.)
Somewhat bashfully the yoginī says, "Darling of Vṛṣabhānu, if You will not be angry, may I say something?"
"Speak."
"I feel great hesitation, yet I cannot avoid saying it."
"Tell Me what causes your hesitation."
"You have heard that one's mind takes on the quality of the food one eats. Even the subtlest particle of thought in the mind of the person serving the meal exerts an influence."
"And?"
With exaggerated shyness she says, "Do not be angry. You are meditating upon a man."
Original
English translation
(Rādhā draws the glass away, hands it to Lalitā, and stands shyly.)
The yoginī laughs. "Do not fear. Bring it. I am ash itself, and everything will be reduced to ash within me. I merely jested with You. Do not take offense."
(Encouraged, Rādhā takes the glass again and offers it to her lips.)
She whispers to Lalitā, "She knows what lies within the mind."
Looking searchingly at the yoginī, Lalitā asks, "Mother, will you tell us something of yoga?"
Original
English translation
"Alakh! I made a mistake. You must now think that a yoginī knows the thoughts of the mind. What shall I do? Alakh!"
"Mother, we are your maidservants. Surely you must show compassion to servants. It is not proper to conceal yourself from them."
Gravely the yoginī says, "There is nothing to conceal, but will you trouble me all night?"
Original
English translation
"Mother, we have not invited you to trouble you. We only wish to ask about what you yourself said."
"Ask."
(Rādhā whispers at length into Lalitā's ear.)
"You said that my friend is meditating upon a man. Can you see through yoga and describe his appearance?"
"Alakh! Such matters are very ordinary. You may ask as many such questions as you desire. I had thought perhaps you would..."
"No, no. We shall ask only about our friend's beloved and nothing else."
Original
English translation
(The yoginī closes her eyes for a while, then laughs.)
"Why do you laugh?"
"I entered meditation to behold your friend's beloved and describe his appearance, and I could not help laughing."
Impatiently Lalitā asks, "Why? What is he doing now?"
Without opening her eyes the yoginī says, "Oh! Your friend is so innocent, and he such a rogue. What a perfectly matched pair!"
"Why? What is it?"
Still laughing with closed eyes, she answers, "Do not ask. Judging from his outward ways, people would think he had renounced the world."
Original
English translation
After a pause the yoginī says, "What astonishing deceit in such a rogue! His heart is so colorful while his exterior displays such renunciation. Remarkable!"
(Rādhā, Lalitā, and all the others stare in wonder.)
"Mother, tell us something clearly."
Laughing, she says, "What can I tell you? Outwardly he appears utterly detached from the world, but inwardly he meditates upon your friend and hums a song. I offer myself to that colorful connoisseur of rasa. Bring my tānpūrā. Through the power of my yoga I shall sing his very song in his own voice."
(Lalitā hands her the tānpūrā.)

English translation
Your face is the moon, and my eyes are its cakora birds.
Tormented and passionately clinging, they have lost all hunger and heed no other course.
Night and day they yearn to meet You. Remaining separated, the heart wonders when union will come.
Bhagavatrāsika says: none but a rasika can understand the words of a rasika.

English translation
(While singing, the yoginī loses consciousness and falls. Rādhā is alarmed, and Lalitā sprinkles rose water upon her face. In the commotion the yoginī's garments shift, revealing the flute hidden at her waist. Lalitā laughs while Rādhā withdraws in embarrassment. The yoginī sits up but remains silent in shame as Lalitā laughs aloud.)
"What a wondrous yoginī, able to change into a man. Only great fortune grants the sight of such a yoginī!"

English translation
(Viśākhā pulls away the yoginī's sari, and Śrī Śyāmasundara appears in her place. The crown that He had twisted up and hidden falls to the floor. Citrā picks it up, touches it to her head, and ties it upon His. Laughing, Śrī Rādhā sits holding His feet and gazes at Him without blinking. Naṭiyā brings a meal tray, a seat is spread, and the sakhīs feed Śyāmasundara while Rādhā serves Him with Her own hands. Lalitā then places the false yoginī's tānpūrā upon her shoulder and sings a meal song.)
