May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!
The Boat-Excursion Līlā
Six white boats shaped like swans glide across the shining waters of Śrī Rādhā-kuṇḍa. At the center of each is a throne upholstered in blue silk, ingeniously fashioned so that while remaining seated one can turn it toward east, west, north, or south at will. Sakhīs ride in all six boats. Śrī Rādhā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa are aboard as well, yet the sakhīs in every boat feel that the Divine Pair is riding in their boat alone. One boat winds playfully eastward while two sakhīs work its oars.
Near its raised end Śrī Kṛṣṇa stands facing south. Beside Him stands Śrī Priyā, also facing south, holding a golden bowl. From the southeastern corner of Rādhā-kuṇḍa several swans swim toward the boats, calling beautifully. Clouds fill the sky and a soft drizzle falls. Raindrops striking the surface of the kuṇḍa raise tiny bubbles. Near Rādhārāṇī, Rūpamañjarī stands with a large golden ewer full of milk.
When the swans reach the boat, Śrī Kṛṣṇa sits down and Rādhārāṇī sits beside Him. Rūpamañjarī fills the Queen’s bowl with milk. Rādhārāṇī hands it to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, takes His shoulder with Her left hand, braces Her right hand below, and watches the birds. Immersed in delight, a swan dips its beak into Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s bowl and drinks. It takes a little, raises its head, calls sweetly, and drinks again. Again and again it sips and lifts its head. Watching like an innocent child, Rādhārāṇī repeatedly bursts into laughter.

English translation
After the swans drink in turn, a female swan approaches. Śrī Kṛṣṇa softly touches Rādhārāṇī’s right cheek with His left hand and says, “Now You feed her.”
Taking the bowl, Rādhārāṇī beckons, “Come here, dear swan. I shall let you drink the nectar left by My beloved Śyāmasundara’s lips.” She turns and signals to Viśākhā, who fills another bowl with milk and places it in Her hands. The Queen sets down the first bowl and raises the second toward Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lips. “Now You must drink a little, or I shall be proved false. I have invited this swan to receive the remnants of Your lip nectar.”
Just as Śrī Kṛṣṇa takes the bowl and leans forward to drink, Madhumaṅgala arrives at the landing and calls, “Kānhū, wait! Wait!” With a splash he jumps into the water. Śrī Kṛṣṇa signals to the sakhīs in another boat to fetch him, but Madhumaṅgala swims swiftly and climbs directly aboard Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s boat. Laughing, he says, “You deceived me nicely, but I arrived in time. Milk is being served, but heed my warning and do not drink. Today is Ṣaṣṭhī. Mother Yaśodā will worship the goddess Ṣaṣṭhī, and she said that Śrī Kṛṣṇa must not drink milk before the worship.”
Śrī Kṛṣṇa sets down the bowl and smiles gently. “Rādhe, how can I drink now?”
Viśākhā picks up a handkerchief. A great tray of sweet boondī rests in the boat. She ties some of it in the cloth, places it in Madhumaṅgala’s hand, and says, “Madhumaṅgala, you are a brāhmaṇa’s son and have studied the scriptures. Tell us some means by which Śrī Kṛṣṇa may drink. If He does not, our friend Rādhārāṇī’s words will prove false, for She has invited the swan to receive the remnants of His lip nectar.”
Madhumaṅgala closes his eyes and thinks. “There is one way. The goddess Ṣaṣṭhī dwells in a woman’s body. If Rādhā drinks first and Śrī Kṛṣṇa drinks after Her from the same milk, the rule of the vow will not be broken, for the milk will have become prasāda.”

English translation
Hearing Madhumaṅgala, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says, “Beloved, if You wish to feed the swan, You must drink first. If I drink first, that rascal Madhumaṅgala will report Me to Mother and she will be displeased.”
Rādhārāṇī smiles, thinking, “I am thoroughly trapped.” Rain begins to fall, and drops enter the bowl. Śrī Kṛṣṇa smiles. “Do not delay. If You wish to feed the swan, drink Yourself and then I shall drink. If not, I shall move the boat onward.”
At that moment the flock of female swans repeatedly raises its heads as though pleading, “Beloved of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, do not move the boat until You have given us the nectar remaining from both Your lips.”
With some embarrassment Śrī Rādhā turns Her face west and barely touches the milk with Her lips. Śrī Kṛṣṇa immediately takes the bowl, drinks two or three sips, and says, “The poor male swans have been left with nothing. They received none of Your prasāda. Make one more bowl of prasāda so that they too may drink.”
At the signal Vimalāmañjarī fills another bowl and places it against Rādhā’s lips. Śrī Kṛṣṇa drinks a drop or two from this bowl as well. Śrī Rādhā now feeds the female swans from one bowl while Śrī Kṛṣṇa feeds the males from the other. Filled with joy, the birds fluff their feathers as they drink.
Meanwhile Madhumaṅgala tastes the boondī Viśākhā gave him. “Kānhū-bhaiyā, this boondī is so delicious that words fail me. You should eat some too.” He cups the handkerchief before Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s mouth. Since Śrī Kṛṣṇa holds the bowl in His right hand and strokes the swans’ heads with His left, He says, “Feed Me a little yourself.” Madhumaṅgala cradles the cloth like a pouch in his left hand and uses his right to place the sweets in Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s mouth. Śrī Kṛṣṇa slowly eats five or seven pieces.
The rain alternately strengthens and softens until Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pītāmbara and the blue saris of Śrī Rādhārāṇī and the sakhīs are drenched. Water runs from their foreheads down their cheeks. When the swans finish drinking, Madhumaṅgala empties the remaining boondī back onto the tray and tells Viśākhā, “You are very cunning. You thought you could trick me with a little boondī, but I shall not be deceived. I am going to your grove right now to see which new fruits have ripened today. You hoped I would become distracted by these sweets and forget to visit. Is that not so?”
The sakhīs laugh. With a great splash Madhumaṅgala leaps into the water and swims northeast toward Viśākhā’s grove, while Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s boat continues eastward.

As soon as the boat faces east, a flock of ducks approaches swiftly, calling loudly. Śrī Kṛṣṇa rises and faces east to watch them. Śrī Rādhā stands at His right and watches as well. The boat has moved only a little when the flock arrives. Śrī Kṛṣṇa signals that the bow should turn north, and the sakhī on the right presses her oar to swing the boat around. Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Śrī Rādhā lovingly greet the ducks, touching them one by one. Lavaṅgamañjarī brings the tray of boondī from behind and places it between the Pair. Śrī Rādhā repeatedly fills Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s palms with the sweets. He holds them out, and the ducks dip in their beaks to eat.
One duck jumps into the boat. Laughing yet slightly frightened, Rādhārāṇī slips behind Śrī Kṛṣṇa and grasps His shoulder. With an affectionate air the duck lowers and raises its head, calling intermittently. Śrī Kṛṣṇa laughs, turns His head to the right, and looks up at Rādhā. “I understand. You are afraid of the duck. Am I not right?”
Rādhārāṇī answers shyly, “No, why should I be afraid? Look, I shall feed this duck now.” She fills Her right palm with boondī and begins to feed it. Seeing the bird eat, five or seven ducks leap aboard together and thrust their beaks toward Her hand. The Queen drops the sweets upon the boat, springs up, catches Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s shoulder, and laughs.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa laughs heartily. “Did I not tell You that You were frightened? You only ventured forward to conceal Your fear. Tell Me, why did You run away?” Rādhārāṇī remains standing with a smile. Then She sits and whispers something in Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s ear. He says, “Very well,” and begins feeding the ducks.
Lalitā comes from behind, pulls one end of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pītāmbara, and wrings it out, for it has become thoroughly drenched. She ties some boondī in it, then fills little cups fashioned from lotus leaves with the remaining sweets and passes them to Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Four or five sakhīs pluck lotus leaves from below, shape them into cups, and hand them to Lalitā. Śrī Kṛṣṇa sets the filled cups upon the water. Great fish immediately overturn them, scattering the boondī into the pool, and eat the sweets. After feeding the swans, ducks, and fish, Śrī Kṛṣṇa rises and signals for the boat to turn east again.

The rain now becomes torrential. Great drops strike the boat and the waters of Rādhā-kuṇḍa. Still denser clouds fill the sky, and it appears the downpour will continue for some time. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Śrī Rādhā, and the sakhīs begin debating whether to leave the boats for the grove or race them through the rain. Śrī Rādhā tells Śyāmasundara, “It appears the rain will be very heavy and continue for a long time. Let Us return to the grove.”
Lalitā says, “Śyāmasundara, if we played today, we would see whether You lose or I do.”
Śyāmasundara laughs openly. “Very well, come on! But I shall not fall into your trap today. You want to settle yesterday’s wager too cheaply. That will not happen.”
Smiling, Lalitā takes her place at an oar and begins rowing. “No indeed, I am not the sort to deceive You and discharge my wager unfairly. I merely want You to try rowing for a while. Today I shall defeat You upon the water.”
Śrī Kṛṣṇa asks, “Then yesterday’s wager will not be counted in this?”
“No, certainly not.”
“Then what harm is there? Come, let us see.”
Śrī Kṛṣṇa takes the left oar. Lalitā stops rowing and signals to the sakhīs in the other boats. At once all the boats turn east and line up in a single row. Śrī Kṛṣṇa appoints Rūpamañjarī to signal the start and judge the winner at the finish. The race begins.
