May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!
The Flute-Resonance Līlā
O mind, meditate on this forever: that beautiful fair and dark Pair, whose splendor none can describe. A crown rests upon His head and a moon-shaped ornament upon Hers; blossoms and lovely earrings adorn Their ears. A tucked dhotī and sari encircle Their waists, while anklets, toe rings, and anavaṭ ornaments grace Their feet. Bracelets and bangles shine upon Their hands, and armlets adorn both Their arms. The sight of His saffron tilaka and Her vermilion dot steals away the mind. Curls frame His face, while Her braid ripples down Her back like a serpent. Near one another, Their brilliant blue and yellow garments flutter. Sweet is the flute at His lips, and equally sweet Their smiles. Their two pairs of eyes cast nectar-saturated glances, treasure houses of supreme compassion. All understanding stands amazed before such wondrous attire. Harīcanda says: without causeless grace, upon whom could such a vision ever descend?
Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved sit in Raṅgadevī’s grove upon the steps of a fountain, Their feet hanging down. The fountain rises about eight cubits and is made from some brilliantly shining metal. The swan upon it is fashioned from the same radiant substance. It holds a lotus by its stem in its beak; the stem is green stone and the blossom red stone. Fine openings pierce the swan’s outspread wings, and water streams from them into the pool. It looks as though a living swan were truly bathing atop the fountain while holding a long-stemmed lotus in its beak.
A circular pool of limpid water surrounds the fountain, extending eight yards from it in every direction. Its rim is made of white marble so highly polished that anyone standing there is reflected as in a mirror. Steps descend into the water on all four sides. Because of the water level, only three steps remain above the surface, while the others are submerged. On the southern steps Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved sit facing north, Their feet dangling from the first step.
The water is utterly clear and sparkles in the sun. Broad lotus leaves spread at intervals across it, bearing red, white, and blue blossoms around which bees hum and hover. A circular pavement of shining yellow stone, five cubits wide, surrounds the pool. Beyond it extends ten cubits of grass so green that it resembles emerald velvet. A ring of henna shrubs encircles the grass. In each cardinal direction stands a beautiful arched gate through which Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved approach the fountain. Two small aśoka trees flank every gate, and between each pair of gates rises a magnificent mango tree.

Cuckoos seated in the mango trees repeat their call, “Kuhū, kuhū.” All four trees are laden with large yellow fruit, and parrots perch upon several mangoes to peck holes in them.
Śrī Rādhā sits to Śyāmasundara’s left with Her right hand upon His left shoulder. The vision of the Pair is incomparable. A blue sari adorns Śrī Priyā’s fair body. Her beloved Śyāmasundara wears a yellow dhotī, and a yellow shawl passes over both shoulders to hang before Him. One end falling from His right shoulder rests upon the pool steps. A floral crown adorns His head. Most of its blossoms are jasmine, interwoven here and there with small red and yellow forest flowers. A little peacock feather is exquisitely tucked at its center.
Upon Śrī Priyā’s head rests a beautiful floral candrikā. Strands of jasmine hang from it in crescent shapes and sway upon Her brow. Śyāmasundara’s forehead bears a saffron tilaka, while a round vermilion dot adorns Śrī Priyā’s. Two locks curl over His cheeks. Just below Her candrikā, a little of Her carefully arranged hair can be seen. The hair on either side of Her central part has been dressed to curve gently toward Her forehead, and today Śyāmasundara’s curls have likewise been arranged to bend toward His brows. Their coiffed hair is thus visible beneath Her candrikā and His crown.
Campaka blossoms are tucked into piercings below both Śyāmasundara’s ears, beside which lovely makara-shaped earrings of jasmine flowers have been arranged. Floral ear ornaments of jasmine adorn Śrī Priyā. Śyāmasundara’s supremely beautiful eyes curve slightly at the corners. From them streams an unfathomable current of boundless love, compassion, and joy. A fountain of tender affection pours from Śrī Priyā’s eyes as well.

Although Śrī Priyā gazes upon a swan swimming in the fountain pool, every moment She steals a glance at Her beloved Śyāmasundara’s lotus face. Often Their eyes meet, and the shadow of shyness repeatedly rises across Her face. To conceal it She turns Her face westward for an instant, yet in the next moment Her yearning to behold Śyāmasundara increases without limit and irresistibly draws Her gaze back to Him.
A tender flush glows upon Śyāmasundara’s pale-blue cheeks and Śrī Priyā’s radiant golden ones, as though ineffably lovely blossoms filled with pollen had just opened within them and cast their rosy color outward. The flute rests upon Śyāmasundara’s betel-reddened lips, while a gentle smile plays upon Śrī Priyā’s lotus face. Through that smile She seems to signal the flute, “O flute, seated upon the lips of My beloved Śyāmasundara, you have made Me dance long enough. Listen now: together with My beloved, you have been taken captive. Look once within the recesses of My heart. All its doors are presently closed. You emerged only by My will. The moment I desire, I shall close those doors again, and you will have to return within My heart.”
Clusters of curls fall on both sides of Śyāmasundara’s neck and across His back. Śrī Priyā’s braid ripples within the folds of Her blue sari. Again and again Her whole being surges with love, causing the veil upon Her head to slip down Her back. The upper part of Her braid then becomes clearly visible, gently swaying. Citrā stands behind the Queen and repeatedly restores the veil to its proper place. A thick garland of jasmine hangs from Śyāmasundara’s neck, with fresh green tulasī leaves threaded between its flowers. A jasmine garland also adorns Śrī Priyā. His hangs perfectly straight to His knees, but Hers inclines slightly toward Śyāmasundara, as though thirsting to reach Him.

Beautiful bracelets of tiny fragrant yellow flowers adorn both Śyāmasundara’s wrists. Floral ornaments encircle Śrī Priyā’s wrists at front and back. Between them are lovely blue bangles of some radiant metal, threaded with garlands of flowers so that the blue appears only at intervals. They seem to have been formed by weaving blue blossoms among yellow ones. Strange and exquisite floral armlets adorn the Pair near Their elbows. Śyāmasundara’s dhotī is tightly tucked at His waist, while the end of Śrī Priyā’s blue sari falls from Her shoulder toward Her hip. She repeatedly presses it there to secure it, but it keeps moving; as soon as its end slips from Her waist, the veil slips from Her head as well. Citrā restores it, only for it to fall again. Śyāmasundara removes the flute from His lips and laughs with pure, unclouded delight. Citrā laughs too. Like an innocent little girl, Śrī Priyā repeatedly asks in the sweetest and purest voice, “Why are you laughing?”
Even Śyāmasundara’s anklets have been adorned all around with yellow flowers so that they appear made entirely of blossoms. Śrī Priyā’s toe rings are decorated in the same way. In addition, floral strands form such extraordinary ornaments around Her heels and near the joints above Her ankles that no comparison could adequately convey their artistry.
Behind Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved, several mañjarīs peel beautiful mangoes and place the pieces upon a large tray, while others arrange the golden slices in golden vessels. Before the Pair, Lalitā and Viśākhā sit upon the pool steps with their feet resting on the second step. Because their gaze is fixed upon Them, they sit almost reclining. Raṅgadevī sits upon the lowest step. Resting her left elbow upon Lalitā’s thighs and her left cheek upon that palm, she beholds the beauty of Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved.

English translation
From time to time Śyāmasundara breathes into His flute for a few moments, and a melodious strain resounds throughout the grove. The instant a note emerges, great bubbles rise in the pool; as soon as the sound stops, they subside. Seeing this happen repeatedly, Śrī Priyā laughs like an innocent girl, and all the sakhīs join Her. In a sweet voice She shakes Śyāmasundara’s shoulder and pleads, “Please play it!”
Śyāmasundara smiles and answers with the greatest affection, “I shall play whatever You tell Me.”
With a loving gesture Śrī Priyā turns Her pupils toward the corners of Her eyes, places both hands upon His left shoulder, and presses firmly. Gazing upon Her with intense love, He says, “No, beloved. How shall I understand unless You tell Me clearly? Say it, and I shall play at once.”
Śrī Priyā lovingly presses His shoulder and draws Him toward Her. She whispers something into His ear, then quickly turns toward Lalitā and laughs with limpid delight. Śyāmasundara says, “Very well, but beloved, grant Me this much freedom: let Me sing whichever song I choose.”
At first Śrī Priyā grows shy. Then, composing Herself, She says in a bashful voice, “Very well, let it be so.” A current of joy flows across Śyāmasundara’s lotus face.
While beholding the beauty of Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved, Raṅgadevī had been sinking ever deeper into love. Whenever Śyāmasundara filled His flute with sound, bubbles rose in the pool. When Raṅgadevī noticed them, she thought, “Oh, every particle of this grove dances in love for beloved Śyāmasundara. These drops of water too desire His touch. Shall I ask Him to bend down and extend His feet to them? No, I shall not make beloved Śyāmasundara rise. Then what shall I do? Let the drops themselves rise and reach Him.”
As Raṅgadevī reflected, she became increasingly overwhelmed with love. The hearts of the sakhīs are wholly united with Śrī Priyā’s heart, so Raṅgadevī’s feeling appeared reflected within Her. Śrī Priyā signaled to Her beloved, “Beloved, fill the flute with such a note that all the water in the pool rises and utterly submerges us.”

English translation
Śrī Priyā’s desire is Śyāmasundara’s desire, and Śyāmasundara’s desire is Śrī Priyā’s. Although She understands that Her beloved will sing only of Her, She knows that praising Her will bring Him joy. Therefore She consents to let Him sing Her virtues before Her very face. Receiving Her command, Śyāmasundara breathes into the flute, and from its openings emerges this song in the sweetest possible tones:
Her heart is like butter, Her being like milk, and within She is sweeter still than curds.
Before Her beauty, even nectar hides away, for all its many charms and cunning are insipid.
Love drips from Her eyes. The poet Deva says that Her speech calls out, while separation burns like a brazier.
Such a relish-filled cowherd maiden is She; why should She not taste sweet to the Enchanter’s heart?
As the music begins, great bubbles rise in the pool. Then, following the waves of sound, the water rapidly swells and surges as though dancing with the melody. The instant the flute sings, “Why should She not taste sweet to the Enchanter’s heart?” the water suddenly rises so high that for one moment the entire enclosure within the ring of henna shrubs is filled to a depth of four cubits. Śrī Priyā, Her Beloved, and all the sakhīs are swept along in it for an instant. In the next moment the water returns within the pool’s bounds. The garments of the Pair and the sakhīs are soaked, and everyone sways in bliss. Seeing the spectacle, the many birds of the grove cry loudly from the tree branches, “All victory to Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved! Victory! Victory!”
