Śrī Priyā sits beneath a guava tree in Śrī Sudevī's grove. A forest of guava trees surrounds her, every tree laden with large and beautiful fruit. Leaning her back against a branch, she sits upon the fresh green grass without any covering, her legs extended and her face turned east. A short distance north of her, Lalitā stands holding a guava branch, absorbed in thought. To Śrī Priyā's right, great ripe guavas are heaped in a handsome platter. Several mañjarīs sit around it, cutting the fruit into pieces with gleaming knives and arranging them upon small plates.

Seven or eight cubits east of Priyā flows a channel of clear water, a cubit and a half wide, with both banks lined in marble. Viśākhā sits beside it, repeatedly scooping the pure water into her joined palms and letting it fall back into the stream.

Rānī calls, "Viśākhe, what are you doing? Come here."

At once Viśākhā rises, comes to her, and asks in a voice filled with affection, "What is it? Tell me."

Yet after calling Viśākhā, Rānī becomes so absorbed in contemplation that she does not realize her friend has arrived. Her eyes remain open, but she is immersed in bhāva-samādhi. Tenderly touching Rānī's chin, Viśākhā whispers, "Mad sister, it will be very difficult for you to keep beloved Śyāmasundara's flute hidden. He must be arriving now. If you remain seated like a stone image, he will find it the moment he comes."

Startled by Viśākhā's warning, Rānī slips a hand inside her bodice. Finding the flute safely in place, she joyfully presses it against herself with both hands. She clasps her heart so tightly that she seems intent upon pushing the flute into its very depths. Viśākhā bursts into laughter at the sight. With a somewhat astonished glance, Rānī communicates something to Lalitā by signs, and Lalitā answers in the same way. Then Rānī says to Viśākhā, "Friend, sing this song."

At Rānī's command, Viśākhā signals to Madhumatī, who brings the vīṇā lying near the thicket and places it in her hands. Resting it against her shoulder, Viśākhā tunes it and sings in an exceedingly sweet voice:

O flute, why are you filled with pride? You are neither made of gold nor silver, nor studded with gems. Everyone knows your caste and lineage: you are merely a stick from Madh vana. Tell me, how did you become so exalted that, touching Hari's mouth, you play melodies laden with longing? Sūra says: what can Lord Śyāma do now, when you have come to rest upon his lips?

Rānī listens with closed eyes. When the song ends, she draws the flute from her bodice and gazes at it. At once her eyes fill with tears. In a choked voice she says, "Vaṃśike, you have drunk the nectar of beloved Śyāmasundara's lips. Intoxicated by that incomparable nectar, you have made me dance along with you. But sister, why are you silent now? Grant my prayer just once. At my request, fill yourself with a melody crying 'Śyāma, Śyāma' and make this forest resound. The instant that melody reaches your beloved Lord of life, he will surely come to you."

With longing eyes, Rānī waits to see whether the flute will sound, but it remains silent. Her voice heavy with tears, she says, "I understand. Separated from beloved Śyāmasundara, you have fallen utterly unconscious. Yes, sister, this alone is love. I, unfortunate as I am, still laugh and play. Alas, how dry and hard my heart must be."

Overwhelmed by her own emotion, Rānī covers her face with her veil and begins to sob. Seeing her weep again, the sakhīs grow anxious.

A short while earlier, as Rānī waited for Śyāmasundara, a mynah brought word that he would probably not come to the forest that day. Mother Yaśodā was occupied with having him donate many cows to brāhmaṇas. Madhumaṅgala was arguing furiously, but Mother would not listen. The moment Rānī heard this news, she fainted. The sakhīs tried many remedies, but consciousness did not return. Rūpamañjarī then ran to Śyāmasundara and said, "Lalitā asks that you come quickly by some means, or devise another remedy. Otherwise hope for the life of my beloved friend Rādhā is fading away."

Śyāmasundara was caught in a dilemma, for Mother Yaśodā would not release him before midday. Quietly he brought his flute and placed it in Rūpamañjarī's hand. "Touch this to my beloved's lips. She will regain consciousness. When she awakens, tell her that I am coming."

Rūpamañjarī brought the flute and did as he instructed. Śrī Priyā awakened and became happy upon hearing that Śyāmasundara was on his way.

As soon as Rānī recovered her happiness, the sakhīs began discussing whether they should keep the flute hidden. Śyāmasundara loved it dearly and would certainly want it back. They could therefore make him grant them a promise in exchange. They would tell him: "You know how to play this flute in countless ways. At times only the person whose name you sound hears it, while no one else hears a thing. At times, resting upon your lips, it resounds through the forest as though you were sitting inside every tree, every vine, and every leaf and playing from there. At times it seems that you have entered the heart of each one of us and are calling our names from within. Sometimes you sound a note which, entering our ears, turns us all into statues of stone, while that same note melts stone slabs until flute song echoes from their very depths. How can we describe it all? We have witnessed innumerable forms of this flute's melody.

"We ask for very little. Teach us only one melody. Teach even one among us to blow a note by which, wherever you may be, you will become enchanted, drawn irresistibly, and come before our Rānī. Then you shall receive the flute back. Otherwise it will remain with us. Or at least let it rest upon Rānī's lips and cry only 'Śyāma, Śyāma.' That alone will satisfy us, for then you will at least know that my Priyā is calling you by name."

English translation

While the sakhīs were still discussing this plan, Rānī opposed it. "I cannot bear that my beloved Śyāmasundara should be enchanted and compelled to come to me against his will."

The sakhīs reasoned with her at length, but she would not listen. They finally decided merely to play a joke. When Śyāmasundara arrived, they would act as though nothing had happened. Rūpamañjarī would hide, and all of them would say that Lalitā had sent her away on an errand and that she had not yet returned. Then they would see what device beloved Śyāmasundara used to find the flute. Rānī accepted this proposal and sat with the flute hidden in her bodice.

Lalitā said, "It will be difficult if you are the one hiding it, but never mind. Keep it first, and I shall manage matters."

They were all seated with this resolve. Yet when Śyāmasundara delayed, Rānī drew out the flute and, overcome with emotion, began speaking to it. By long habit she lifted it toward her lips, but before placing it there she lowered it and gazed at it, thinking that it had fainted today, for even when she breathed into it, it would not cry "Śyāma, Śyāma." This thought about the flute intensely inflamed Rānī's stainless love. Feeling a deficiency of love within herself, she began to weep. Seeing her sob, the sakhīs became worried. Whether their game of stealing the flute succeeded or failed no longer mattered, but if their beloved friend fainted again, how would they revive her?

Lalitā therefore tries a clever remedy. Putting an arm around Rānī's neck, she wipes away her tears, takes the flute from Rānī's lap, and returns it to her bodice. To impress the danger upon her, Lalitā immediately says, "Śyāmasundara is about to come. The moment he sees your tears, he will know that his Priyā has been weeping. Then he too will begin to cry and will become terribly distressed."

Rānī starts and says, "My beloved Śyāmasundara will be distressed? Oh, then I shall not cry, not even a little. Look, am I crying? I am laughing. See, I am laughing."

"So you will not tell him?" Lalitā asks.

"I shall not."

"And if Śyāmasundara becomes anxious and asks you?"

"I still shall not tell."

Lalitā laughs. Rānī asks, "Tell me, why are you laughing?"

"Then give me the flute," Lalitā replies.

"No, I shall not give it to you."

"You will neither give it to me nor keep its secret from Śyāmasundara. What a fine game you intend to play!"

Growing serious, Rānī says, "Lalite, listen. I do not tell him, but whenever Śyāmasundara asks anything with that loving gaze, my eyes turn of their own accord and signal the answer. Many times I have followed your advice and resolved to hide something from beloved Śyāmasundara, but I never can. The instant I see him, I forget everything."

"Then do one thing. When he comes, do not look at him. Looking at him causes all the trouble."

"Ah, how innocent you are. How could he arrive and my eyes not look upon him?"

"Very well, look at him, but keep the matter of the flute concealed."

"Yes. Today I shall make every effort."

English translation

Rānī has scarcely finished speaking when Śyāmasundara arrives. Walking swiftly, he stops at the channel of clear water. Śrī Priyā gazes at him without blinking. Seeing him come, Rūpamañjarī hides behind a nearby thicket. Joy spreads through the grove. Viśākhā runs to Śyāmasundara, seizes his hand, and says, "Look, my friend Rādhā wagered you in a game of dice and lost. Therefore I hold authority over you today. We have been playing for two hours, and it was a splendid game."

Somewhat startled, Śyāmasundara reflects and quietly asks, "Where has Rūpamañjarī gone?"

Viśākhā replies, "Some articles for worship were left at home. Lalitā sent her long ago to fetch them."

Śyāmasundara, still surprised, asks, "Did she not come here carrying my flute?"

"Why would she bring your flute? Did you not bring it today?"

Laughing at his question, Lalitā says, "It seems your flute has gone missing from your own hand today. You must have met Rūpamañjarī on the path and now suspect that she hid it somewhere. Is that not so?"

After thinking for a moment, Śyāmasundara understands that they have devised some joint trick. He decides to ask Śrī Priyā very carefully by signs whether Rūpamañjarī truly came with the flute. If Priyā confirms even that much, he can find it easily. He therefore looks toward her. The instant their eyes meet, the tide of love rises within Śrī Priyā. Śyāmasundara comes somewhat nearer and says:

"Priye, you know how dear the flute is to me. If it is anywhere within your sight, I have no cause for concern. Only today the flute said to me, 'Beloved Śyāmasundara, Rānī's sakhīs wish to separate me from you. They have grown jealous of my good fortune. Take me, therefore, to Rānī's feet. I shall plead with her that her sakhīs are angry with me for no reason. I harm no one. When Śyāmasundara asks me to speak, I speak; when he does not, I remain silent. Tell me yourself, how can I violate my duty? If I refuse my master Śyāmasundara's command, I would become unfaithful. My Rānī, who better than you can teach me the heart of dharma? That is why I have come to you. Judge the matter yourself. If I am at fault, hand me over to your sakhīs. If they are at fault, hand them over to me. I shall carry them to my master, beloved Śyāmasundara, and deal with them exactly as he commands.'"

Śyāmasundara continues, "O sovereign of my life, hearing the flute's complaint, I thought that if your sakhīs separated her from me, she would be deeply unhappy. She is perfectly faithful and serves me day and night with single-minded devotion. Even apart from me she would remain mine, but I do not wish her to suffer. Many times she has told me, 'Beloved, Rānī's sakhīs ask me to play according to their wishes. Yet I cannot sound without your will, nor do I wish to hurt their hearts. Sometimes I think you should appoint another sister like me in my place. Then Rānī's sakhīs would cease to be jealous and would themselves understand the entire secret.' Priyatame, today the flute was so agitated that she even threatened to leave in displeasure. I think that if she has gone away in anger but has come to you after parting from me, she will be happy. Otherwise she must be weeping bitterly. If you have seen her anywhere, please tell me."

The sakhīs laugh aloud at Śyāmasundara's speech. Rānī, however, grows solemn and says, "Beloved, the flute must have gone and hidden somewhere inside your own heart."

English translation

Śyāmasundara keeps flutes made of gold and bamboo, known as muralī, vaṃśī, and by other names. When he holds a golden flute, the gold ornaments upon the sakhīs' bodies rejoice: “Our whole kind has attained such fortune, for one among us is touching beloved Śyāmasundara.” Maddened by delight, every golden ornament begins to ring in harmony with the flute. The sakhīs feel that despite all their attempts to restrain them, the ornaments have helplessly flown toward Śyāmasundara's music. The sound of those ornaments enters their hearts, multiplies without limit, and in Śyāmasundara's own tone binds even the heart's inner voice. The sakhīs become as though mad and begin to murmur in the very same manner.

Rānī's reply irritates Lalitā slightly, though she conceals it. "Very well, Śyāmasundara, do one thing. I shall immediately find your offended flute and pacify her. But today you must fashion a parrot of flowers for Viśākhā with your own hands. Then tomorrow all of us together shall show you a splendid game."

Speaking thus, Lalitā moves in front of Rānī, screens her from Śyāmasundara, and signals to her. Rānī turns to look toward the northwestern corner, while Viśākhā cleverly turns Śyāmasundara toward Rādhā-kuṇḍa. In that instant Lalitā removes the flute from Śrī Rādhā's bodice and deftly slips it into her own. Śyāmasundara turns back just as she hides it. Lalitā then says, "Look, this friend of mine is half mad. One moment she says one thing, and the next something else. I am quite distressed by her. Do one more favor. Draw a portrait of yourself with your own hand and give it to her, so that in your absence I may console her with that picture."

Śyāmasundara smiles, though inwardly he is intent upon finding the flute quickly. From Śrī Priyā's words he already knows it was with his beloved, but now Lalitā has taken it. Śrī Priyā also signals that Lalitā has it. Śyāmasundara therefore stands devising a way to outwit Lalitā completely.

An idea comes to him. Closing his eyes, he says, "My head is spinning. I should lie down for a little while. Do not be alarmed; it is only a slight pain."

Śyāmasundara lies down where he stands. Deeply frightened, Śrī Priyā rushes to him. By a sign he reassures her that he is not in pain and only wishes to outwit Lalitā. Still anxious, Rānī remains beside him. Śyāmasundara takes her hand, presses it, and signals again that he is perfectly well. Only then does Priyā regain her composure.

Slowly sitting up, Śyāmasundara says, "Some days ago, in a secluded bower, my Priyā took my flute. It was the full-moon night of Bhādrapada. We sat together upon a bed of flowers, and the entire bower was adorned with blossoms. I told Priyā, 'Very well, from today the flute shall remain yours. But remember, she lives only by drinking the nectar of my lips. You must therefore feed her your own lip nectar regularly, or she will go hungry. If you ever forget, you will weep when you see her condition, and seeing you weep, I too shall begin to cry.'"

Śrī Priyā listens with intense longing. The memory of that day's secluded līlā makes her ever more restless in love. Śyāmasundara continues, "I shall tell you what happened next. Love streamed from my Priyā's eyes, and I gazed fixedly into them. She said, 'Lord of my life, I shall return the flute at once, but listen to one request. For many days I have wanted to tell you this, yet whenever I see you, I forget it. Today I remembered. Every evening Lalitā adorns me and becomes immersed in joy. Seeing her mad with delight, I think: there is no beauty in me, but since this mad girl has dressed me, let me see how she has adorned your maidservant for your service. She brings a mirror before me, but, Prāṇeśvara, I do not know why I see your face instead of my own. After long reflection, I have understood today that you love me exceedingly. The love of your heart surrounds me on every side, and therefore I behold your reflection instead of mine. O treasure of my life, the same thing happened today. I thought, ah, how beautiful this reflection is.

"'If one day Śyāmasundara were to dress me with his own hands in garments and ornaments exactly like his, how beautiful that reflection would be. Therefore, beloved, drape your own scarf over me today. Arrange my hair like yours, bind a peacock-feather crown upon my head, and place the flute upon my lips. Then I shall see what image appears in the mirror.'"

As Śyāmasundara narrates this to Lalitā, Priyā becomes wholly absorbed in the remembered mood. Seeing her condition, Śyāmasundara smiles once and then says, "Lalite, I dressed Priyā exactly as she asked."

The instant these words leave his mouth, Śrī Priyā is overwhelmed by bhāva and faints. With immense love, Śyāmasundara lays her in his lap. After a little while, still absorbed in that mood, she murmurs, "Yes, place the flute upon my lips."

Very cleverly Śyāmasundara replies, "Priye, you are the one who hid the flute. Take it out and give it to me, and I shall place it upon your lips."

Hearing this, Śrī Priyā reaches inside her bodice. Still overcome, she cries, "Oh! What has happened to it? Where has it gone? Alas, I hid it right here. Who carried it away?"

Deeply distressed, Śrī Priyā begins to weep. "Alas, who took my beloved Śyāmasundara's flute from beside my heart? Whoever you are, do not tease me. Bring it back. I wish to place it upon my lips once and behold my reflection."

Seeing Śrī Priyā's state, Lalitā grows solemn. Smiling, Śyāmasundara whispers so softly that Priyā cannot hear, "Lalitārānī, now bring your game under control. Bring the flute quickly. You can see her condition and imagine for yourself what will happen next."

Alarmed, Lalitā draws the flute from her bodice and places it in Śyāmasundara's hand. Laughing slightly, she says, "Yes, Śyāmasundara, you truly are a great rogue. Very well, we shall settle this another time."

Śyāmasundara places the flute upon Śrī Priyā's lips. The instant it touches them, Priyā becomes happy and, immersed in bhāva, feels that she is gazing upon her reflection in the mirror. Rānī remains in this posture for some time, then faints and falls into Śyāmasundara's lap. Holding her there, he gazes upon the beauty of her face.

After a while Śrī Priyā regains consciousness. Sitting up, she becomes somewhat shy. Śyāmasundara holds the flute and bursts into laughter. After laughing for a time, he says, "Priye, I have gained a great advantage today. Just see, now I shall learn every secret from the flute."

He touches the flute to his head, kisses it, and says, "Vaṃśike, how blessed you are. You have returned after resting beside Lalitārānī's heart. Tell me what you saw and heard there."

After making this request, he raises it to his ear, then turns laughing to Rādhārānī. "Priye, would you like to hear the news the flute has given me?"

"Tell us," Rānī answers eagerly.

All the sakhīs become intensely curious, though Lalitā is trembling slightly. Śyāmasundara says, "Vaṃśike, sing aloud in your lovely voice exactly what you told me."

Śyāmasundara breathes melody into the flute, and an exceedingly sweet song emerges. Every sakhī feels that these words issue directly from its openings: "Beloved Śyāmasundara, I shall sing the verse that resounded in the innermost depth of Lalitā's heart, the verse I heard there":

I shall merge my body's fire into the radiance of Śyāma's form, and its water into the nectar of his lips. I shall merge its space into the hollow of the flute and its vital air into his life breath. Dissolving the element of earth, this servant shall meditate upon her Beloved.

English translation

(The sense of the verse is this: My body is composed of five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space. Their conjunction alone forms this body. Yet because of this body, beloved Śyāmasundara seems far away, and I cannot behold his beauty perfectly. Yes, sakhī, this is the heart of the matter: the body has become a great obstruction. One act would resolve it. I shall separate its five elements. I shall merge fire into the splendor of Śyāmasundara's form; water into the nectar of his lips; space into the hollow space within his flute; and air into Śyāmasundara's vital breath. Earth alone will remain. If fortune grants me a vision of Śyāmasundara at dusk, I shall surely see particles of cow-dust upon his lotus face. Into those particles I shall dissolve the earth element of my body. Then I shall behold beloved Śyāmasundara perfectly and meditate upon him without obstruction. Then he will come to dwell forever in my heart.)

The flute's melodious song makes everyone insensible with love. Lalitā, as if mad, runs to Śyāmasundara, throws her arms around his neck, and faints. It is an extraordinary vision. The sakhīs sway in love on every side. Rādhārānī sits pressed against Śyāmasundara like a stone image, clasping his left shoulder with both hands. Lalitā lies unconscious with her arms around his neck. Śyāmasundara himself sways in love, smiling gently. After a few moments Lalitā regains awareness, though her eyes remain closed. Lovingly Śyāmasundara strokes her face. When she is fully conscious, she withdraws a little and sits nearby in bashfulness. Love, peace, and silence cover everything.

Breaking the silence, Śyāmasundara laughs and says, "Lalitārānī, behold the wonder of my flute. Ah, how devotedly she serves me. Even while separated from me, what a lovely means of service she devised. She forcibly brought even a proud and obstinate woman like you to hang around my neck like a garland. Victory to my beloved flute!"

After a pause he adds, "Lalitārānī, I have yet to exact the penalty for hiding my flute."

Rūpamañjarī had returned and taken her place as soon as the flute was set upon Rānī's lips. Looking toward her and Sudevī, Śyāmasundara says, "Rūpa, you have invited me into a fine household indeed. Remember, you too must suffer punishment for joining your group mistress Lalitārānī and helping with this theft. Sudevi, with your knowledge this injustice occurred in your own grove: my beloved flute was separated from me through a fully contrived conspiracy. You too must therefore receive your punishment before evening. Stay alert, for I am warning you in advance."

The sakhīs become overwhelmed by the immense affection in Śyāmasundara's words. Regaining her composure, Sudevī says, "Whatever happens, I shall face it. But tell me, is it a small thing that your lost flute returned to you here in my own grove? Come, then. Take her to the music festival and display some of her wonders there."

Pleased by Sudevī's words, Śyāmasundara sets out toward the pāila grove to join the music festival, with Śrī Priyā on one side and Lalitā on the other.
