May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!
The Līlā of Longing for Union
Śrī Priyā sits beside a fountain in Campakalatā’s grove. Its water falls with a ceaseless murmur into a pool some ten yards across. Around the pool is a lovely pavement of gleaming pale stone, touched here and there with golden hues. Small steps descend into the water from all four directions. Broad green lotus leaves spread across the surface, and blue, red, and white lotuses sway in the breeze. The fountain rises three or four yards high and bears a stone swan holding a long-stemmed lotus in its beak. Through an opening in that flower the water streams like pearls into the pool. Fragrant flowering shrubs around the pool have been carefully clipped into arches spelling “Rādhā-Śyāma” again and again. Small marble benches stand on either side of each arch. Behind every shrub grows a mango tree where a cuckoo calls, “Kū, kū.”
Śrī Priyā sits upon the pavement at the southern side of the pool, facing north. Both feet rest upon the first step. She holds Her cheeks in Her hands and keeps Her gaze lowered. Vimalāmañjarī stands behind Her, while Madhumatīmañjarī sits at Her left with a vīṇā in hand, poised to play and awaiting Her command. Only a little while ago Śrī Priyā asked Madhumatī to fetch the instrument, but She has become so absorbed in thought that, when Madhumatī returns, She forgets what is happening and even where She is. Now and then She raises Her eyes to the swaying lotuses, yet Her gaze never reaches Madhumatī.

Madhumatīmañjarī signals with her eyes to Vimalāmañjarī behind the Queen. Vimalā takes from her bodice an exquisitely beautiful portrait of Śyāmasundara and sits at Śrī Priyā’s right. When Priyā glances obliquely toward her, Her eyes fall upon the portrait. She swiftly takes it from Vimalā’s hand and tries to look at it, but tears immediately fill Her eyes. She struggles to restrain them, yet they will not stop.
Holding the portrait, Śrī Priyā longs to behold it, but Her eyes are so flooded that She cannot see. Again and again She wipes them with the edge of Her veil and looks back, only for tears to fill them anew. After five or six fruitless attempts, She presses the portrait to Her heart in anguish, raises Her head, and weeps. Several moments pass in this way. Madhumatī lays down the vīṇā and wipes Priyā’s tears with her veil. After weeping for some time, Priyā regains a little composure and says in a faltering voice, “Madhumatī, sing something...”
Madhumatī rests the vīṇā against her shoulder and sings:
My eyes have taken a bribe and turned against me.
Beholding Śyāma but once, they abandoned home and household and became mendicants.
Now, without seeing Him, they shed tears, and every moment passes like an age.
Nārāyana says: such indeed is the fruit they received from the seed they had sown.
As she sings, tears begin to flow from Madhumatī’s own eyes. Śrī Priyā now sobs uncontrollably. Gathering courage, Madhumatī immediately sets aside the vīṇā, places her right arm around Priyā’s neck, and with her left hand uses her veil to wipe away Her tears.

English translation
After a while Śrī Priyā grows calmer. With a grave expression She rises, goes to the shrub behind Her, and sits facing north, leaning against one of the small marble benches beside its arch.
Rūpamañjarī enters through the eastern gate, her face radiant with joy. Sitting beside Rādhārāṇī, she says brightly, “My Queen, Madhumaṅgala has accomplished something great today. Otherwise Mother had completely prevented Śyāmasundara from going to the forest. Your surmise was correct: today is the worship for Nāgapañcamī. Mother detained Him first for the worship and then to feed the brāhmaṇas through Him. But Madhumaṅgala quarrelled with Śyāmasundara and made such an uproar that he refused to eat. How could Śyāmasundara eat when he would not? He too refused. Madhumaṅgala insisted, ‘Yesterday He promised to repay today the wagers He lost, but now He evades payment by saying Mother will not let Him go to the forest.’ Since Śyāmasundara would not eat, Mother yielded and said, ‘Very well. I shall finish the worship by one and a half prahar after sunrise, and then you may go to the forest.’ Thus He will certainly come, my Queen, though He may be somewhat delayed.”
Hope and joy fill the Queen’s heart. She embraces Rūpamañjarī and caresses her in gratitude for the auspicious news. Just then Rādhārāṇī’s myna flies in and alights before Her. The Queen places Sārī upon Her left hand, strokes her head with Her right, and asks eagerly, “Sārikā, surely you bring news of my beloved Śyāmasundara. Tell Me, how long before He comes?”

“My Queen, He has already emerged from the gate of Nanda-bhavana with the cowherd boys. I came to give You this news.”
The Queen’s joy knows no bounds. She clasps Sārī to Her heart, and the bird too sinks into love. Happiness fills everyone. They had feared Śyāmasundara might not come today, but Sārī’s words dispel all anxiety. Keeping the bird upon Her hand, the Queen caresses her and repeatedly gazes down the path in longing. Yet restlessness overtakes Her. Sārī flies to the ground. The Queen rises, stands a while, and then sits facing east upon the same bench, leaning against its arm and stretching Her feet along the seat. Softly She calls, “Sārikā, come here.” The bird flies to the arm of the bench near Her feet.
“Sārī, could I too have wings like yours?”
“What would You do with wings, my Queen?”
“I would fly about like you, seeking my beloved Śyāmasundara. Whichever grove He entered, I would fly straight there.”
Sārī is silent. Rādhārāṇī asks again, “Tell Me truly, Sārikā, why does Śyāmasundara love Me?”
After looking at the Queen’s face for a moment, Sārī replies, “One day I shall ask Śyāmasundara and tell You.”
“Take care that He does not deceive you.”
“My dearest Queen, He will not deceive me. He loves me very much as well.”

English translation
Pleased, Rādhārāṇī asks, “Then tell Me why He loves you.”
Sārī replies, “One day I flew to Him. As soon as I arrived, Śyāmasundara lifted me onto His hand. Tears streamed from His eyes and His throat choked. After some time He mastered Himself and said, ‘Sārikā, the sight of you makes My very life restless. You are the myna of Rādhā, sovereign of My life. Ah, My beloved must have touched you with Her own hands before sending you to Me. Come, Sārī, sit within My heart. Truly, the moment I take you upon My hand, I see My beloved Rādhā everywhere around Me. Therefore you are as dear to Me as life itself.’”
Gravity comes over the Queen’s face. “Sārī, if I ask one thing, will you answer exactly?”
“Yes, my Queen, certainly.”
“Do you know any medicine which, if I took it, would make Me die?”
Sārī falls silent and thinks. Just then Lalitā enters softly from the south, smiling. The Queen is too absorbed to notice her. Hearing the question, Lalitā signals to Sārī, who asks, “What would You do after dying, my Queen?”
“I would cling forever to Śyāmasundara’s feet. This body alone keeps Me apart from Him.”
“But have You considered what would become of Śyāmasundara then?”
Rādhārāṇī is alarmed. “Oh, I truly forgot! No, Sārī, I shall not die. My beloved Śyāmasundara would not live after My death. I had quite lost My senses. You warned Me at the proper moment. I shall never die.”
She closes Her eyes and reflects, then asks, “Sārī, do you know where Śyāmasundara goes nowadays?” Opening Her eyes, She continues, “Yes, tell Me. Months have passed, and He has not visited these groves even once. Who knows where He goes?” Her face reddens as She enters an ecstasy in which She feels that She comes daily but Śyāmasundara never does. “You can fly. Why do you not seek where He has gone? Perhaps He has lost the way. He is so guileless that anyone could mislead Him.”
Tears pour from the Queen’s eyes. Lalitā, who had been standing behind Her, comes forward and kneels beside Her head. The Queen does not see her, for She sinks ever deeper into devotional absorption. Suddenly She cries, “Sārī, go and bring Lalitā!”
Sitting upon the edge of the bench, Lalitā says, “Why, sister? I am right here beside you.”
“It is good that you have come. I must tell you something. Listen calmly and do not be alarmed.”
“I shall listen peacefully, sister, and I shall not be alarmed. Tell me.”
“A disease has afflicted Me. Until now I concealed it from all of you, but the final moment of My life has arrived, so I wish to reveal everything. You will not become distressed when you hear?”
Tears of love fill Lalitā’s eyes. “No, I shall not be distressed. Open Your heart and tell me.”
“You may remember that many thousands of years ago I saw Śyāmasundara just once. Since then I have never seen Him again. Yes, sister, only once. From that very moment I have hidden His image in My heart, concealing it even from all of you.”*
In the exalted state of love, even a single moment’s separation from the beloved seems like an age. When Śrī Śyāmasundara went to the forest, separation became so painful for the gopīs that even a truṭi seemed an age. This is described in the Śrīmad Bhāgavata. The waves of emotion arising in Rādhārāṇī’s heart are altogether boundless and incomparable. Whenever Śrī Priyā experiences separation from Śyāmasundara for even a moment, She feels that ages have elapsed and that She has not seen Him since. Although Śyāmasundara meets Śrī Priyā every day, in ecstasy She comes to think that those meetings were merely experienced in contemplation, that She lost all awareness in meditation and imagined what had not occurred. In truth, She feels, Śyāmasundara has not come to Her for thousands upon thousands of years. Thus today too Śrī Priyā imagines that many days have passed since She met Him. No voice can express this state of love. Only rare and genuine saints attain blessedness by experiencing it.

English translation
“Day and night I kept Him enthroned within My heart and drank the nectar of His beauty in contemplation. Yet, sister, I burned all the while. What a strange condition! Even while immersed in an ocean of the nectar of His beauty, I continued to burn. Sometimes I imagined that beloved Śyāmasundara had come and was lavishing love upon Me. The night would end in that bliss, and then I would realize it had only been an illusion. I sink into the nectar of His beauty, and in the next moment My heart burns in the fire of separation. Thus I have passed so many days, laughing and burning. Now My heart is almost destroyed, and My life will leave in a little while. He gave Me a single draught of His beauty and never returned. I do not know where He went. So many days have passed in waiting, and today is the final day.”
The Queen falls silent. Lalitā keeps gazing upon Śrī Priyā’s lotus face. The Queen continues, “Now you must harden your heart. Sister, you love Me dearly. I do not know whether your life will endure separation from Me, but keep courage for a few moments. My life is about to depart. Place the portrait of My beloved Śyāmasundara upon My heart. When I die, bind it there tightly with the edge of My veil, then give Me samādhi together with the portrait in My beloved Śyāmasundara’s pond. With fortitude, perform this final service for your beloved friend.”
Seeing the Queen’s condition, Lalitā wonders how she can console Her. After a moment she whispers into Rādhārāṇī’s ear, “Sister, beloved Śyāmasundara has come. Look, He is standing upon the path to Viśākhā’s grove.”

The instant those words reach Her ears, the Queen sits upright and looks that way in shy excitement. At that very moment Anaṅgamañjarī appears upon the path to Viśākhā’s grove, wearing a blue sari with a yellow veil over her shoulder. Seeing those colors, Śrī Priyā believes that Śyāmasundara truly is approaching, and steadiness returns to Her. Softly She says, “Look, My beloved Śyāmasundara is coming. I shall hide. Tell Him that Rādhā could not come today. Now I shall see where He searches for Me!”
She rises and runs south. Seeing that her friend is running while overcome with ecstasy and may fall, Lalitā follows to protect Her. At that same moment Śyāmasundara enters through the southern gate of Campakalatā’s grove and stands at a distance, watching the Queen flee. She does not see Him. She enters a bower of rose creepers encircled by henna beds and stands looking north.
Lalitā sees Śyāmasundara and signals lovingly, “The Queen was deeply overwhelmed today. Somehow we calmed Her a little. Now You must care for Your beloved.” Smiling, Śyāmasundara comes silently to the southern side of the henna bed and peers through openings in the creepers at His beloved Rādhā. After gazing north for a while, Rādhārāṇī looks south, then west, then east, and drops heavily to the ground.

Lalitā enters the bower and says, “Sister, Śyāmasundara will not turn back now. It is well done. He has begun arriving late every day, so today He will learn the pain of waiting.”
The Queen grows sad. “Lalite, if My beloved Śyāmasundara searches for Me and cannot find Me, will He not suffer?” A moment later She cries, “No, sister, I shall not hide. Would I seek happiness by hurting His tender heart? Never! I shall return to the fountain.”
Hidden nearby, Śyāmasundara hears Her words and becomes ever more immersed in love and joy. Rādhārāṇī springs up to run, but Lalitā catches and restrains Her. The Queen says, “If you will not let Me go, then do one thing. Go there yourself. He must be standing by the fountain, searching for Me in terrible anguish. Alas, He must be disappointed, and His face must have withered. I cannot bear it. Tell Him that Rādhā sits in this bower awaiting Him.”
Lalitā goes outside to Śyāmasundara and softly tells Him everything in brief. Meanwhile Rādhārāṇī waits for Śyāmasundara to return with her. Now She rises to peer outside, now She sits and gazes eagerly. At last She lies upon a bed of flowers, closes Her eyes, and quietly hums. Śyāmasundara and Lalitā watch Śrī Priyā’s līlā of love through the openings in the henna creepers. Her song cannot be heard clearly; only a word or two reaches them from time to time.

English translation
After humming for some time, Śrī Priyā sits up, rests Her face upon both palms, and reflects. “Beloved Śyāmasundara, every corner of My heart is Yours. O treasure of My life, each day I adorn this heart for You alone. Today too I have decorated it for You and sit waiting, yet I do not know why You have not come.”
Restlessness drives Her to rise and wander from the bower like one bereft of reason. Outside, She sees a play-swing woven of leaves and again enters ecstasy. She feels that She is swinging while beloved Śyāmasundara pushes so swiftly that Her sari flies in the wind. This time His push is so forceful that the end of Her sari falls and catches upon a rose thorn. The Queen imagines that She has taken offence, forcibly stopped the swing, and stepped down. Her beloved has followed, saying, “No, now I shall push gently and properly. Beloved, climb back on and let Us swing.”
Blind to the outer world in this absorption, Śrī Priyā circles the henna bed, repeating, “No, I shall not swing now. I shall not swing.” She reaches the place where Śyāmasundara stands and collides with Him. At His touch She imagines that He is insistently leading Her back to the swing. Feigning anger outwardly while actually grasping His hand, She says, “Look, I shall not swing like this. Give Me Your pītāmbara. I shall bind it tightly around Myself, and then there will be no difficulty.”
Śyāmasundara understands Her state. Laughing, He drapes His pītāmbara over Śrī Priyā and says, “Beloved, I shall do whatever You say.”
The familiar voice reaches Her ears, and Śrī Priyā returns to outward awareness. She sees Her beloved Śyāmasundara wrapping Her in His pītāmbara. As everything comes back to Her, She grows shy. Śyāmasundara embraces Her to His heart. Lalitā bursts into laughter. The sakhīs and maidservants run to Them and begin their service.
