Beloved Rādhā, listen to this one plea of mine. I was coming, longing to reach you, when they surrounded me on the way. I tried every device and made petition after petition, but they would not let me turn away. Overpowered and helpless, says servant Paramānanda, I call out and tell you what befell me.

Śrī Priyā is seated in Indulekhā's grove. There is a beautiful circular marble platform, eight yards across and one cubit above the ground. Fresh green grass grows all around it, clipped into exquisite decorative designs. A thick cushion of blue velvet covers the platform, and at its center stands a throne upholstered in the same blue velvet. A little west of the throne is a small bolster. Leaning against it, Śrī Priyā sits facing the southeastern corner. Lalitā stands behind her, smiling softly. Raising the index finger of her right hand to her lips, she signals to Śyāmasundara, who is standing at a distance, that he must not speak.
Śrī Śyāmasundara stands about twelve yards west of the platform, holding a branch of a fragrant flowering tree in his left hand and his flute in his right. On reaching the grove entrance he has already learned from Vilāsamañjarī that Priyā is seated there in loving displeasure. He therefore approaches slowly, stops some distance from the platform, and asks Lalitā by gesture, "What manner of mood is this today?"
At first Lalitā glares and gives him a little scolding look. Yet when she sees Śyāmasundara smile, she cannot keep from smiling herself, though she continues to signal that he must say nothing. All the sakhīs are flooded with joy because Śyāmasundara has come, but seeing Śrī Priyā's solemn expression, they restrain their delight and quietly continue their respective services. Śrī Priyā remains profoundly grave and speaks to no one. Nabī lies before her. Two magnificent aśoka trees rise to the east and south of the platform, crowded with flocks of parrots and mynahs. Birds of many other kinds perch on the branches throughout the grove and fill it with their calls.

After Śyāmasundara has stood there for some time, a parrot perched in an aśoka tree begins to speak: "O Lady Indulekhā, ah, look! Beloved Śyāmasundara has entered your grove. How extraordinary is his splendor! Two loose curls from the row of his locks have fallen upon his cheeks. They look like swarms of bees that have flown in from opposite directions, settled in a single line, and begun to drink the nectar of Śyāmasundara's lotus face. Ah, what beautiful eyes! I cannot think of any comparison. Truly, they are incomparable. And look at that gentle smile upon his lips. Beloved Śyāmasundara, I surrender myself to the beauty of this form!"
After a brief pause the parrot continues: "O Lady Indulekhā, what has happened today? Why do you remain standing? My beloved Śyāmasundara has been on his feet for so long that they must be aching. Spread a seat for him. Make your tender heart itself his seat and place beloved Śyāmasundara upon it."
The parrot has not yet broken the thread of his speech when the female mynah interrupts: "Parrot! Like Śyāmasundara himself, you are truly ignorant of rasa. That is why you chatter so much. You are frantic to welcome this Śyāmasundara, but let me tell you about his virtues, and then you will know what sort of person he is. Tell me, do you understand the heart of my beloved Rādhārānī? You do not. Had you understood it, you would not speak this way today.
"Listen. Śyāmasundara is indeed very beautiful, but his heart is exceedingly hard and devoid of rasa. If it possessed rasa, could he ever leave my beloved Rādhārānī and enter another's grove? Parrot, look once at Rādhārānī's face and tell me whether you have seen such beauty anywhere else. Surely you have not. Shall I tell you about her heart as well? From top to bottom, within and without, her whole heart is filled with Śyāmasundara alone. Not the smallest space remains through which another thing might enter. Such a heart, and such beauty! Now contemplate this divine form of Śrī Rādhārānī, and then contemplate Śyāmasundara's conduct. Only then tell us how she should serve him."

From the mynah's words, Śyāmasundara understands why Rādhārānī is displeased. He signals to the parrot not to answer her, then approaches the platform, climbs upon it, and sits beside Rādhārānī. Lalitā addresses him rather sharply: "So! Now that you have grown tired of amusing yourself over there, you have come here for diversion. Is that not precisely it?"
Śyāmasundara replies, "You will not believe me anyway, so what use is there in explaining?" He places his right hand upon the bolster against which Śrī Priyā is leaning and says with immense tenderness, "Priye, listen to one thing I have to say."
Śrī Rādhārānī lowers her head and says nothing. With great affection, Śyāmasundara takes her right hand, which rests upon the bolster, into his own. "Beloved, I swear I was coming here, but they all met me on the way. The mynah told you the truth when she said that I went into their grove, yet she did not see the circumstances in which I went. I was gathering flowers when all of them suddenly surrounded me. I signaled to Madhumaṅgala to begin quarreling with me so that, while we pretended to fight, the two of us might escape. Madhumaṅgala did just that, but my clever plan only trapped me more firmly.
"While arguing, Madhumaṅgala pulled at my waistband. I was holding the leaf bowl of flowers in my left hand. He kept saying, 'Throw away this bowl. These milkmaids have touched it, so I shall not let you wear a garland made from these flowers.' I pretended that I refused to throw it away. Madhumaṅgala lunged for the bowl with one hand and seized my waistband with the other. As I struggled to secure both, my waistband loosened and my flute, which had been tucked into it, fell to the ground. Śaibyā snatched it up at once. Then I was truly trapped. If I had returned to you without my flute, you would have asked what had happened to it, and any answer I gave would only have deepened your suspicion. I therefore had to recover it. I repeatedly begged them to return my flute, but they would not listen. They kept saying, 'If you want it, come into my grove and drink a little sherbet. Then I shall return it.' When they refused by every means to give it back, I yielded and entered their grove. At that very moment the mynah flew there. I was utterly caught in this predicament and could not even speak to explain myself to her. Thus everything she told you was true, but, Priye, I was not at fault. Tell me yourself, what else could I possibly have done?"

Hearing Śyāmasundara's explanation, Śrī Priyā reflects, "How guileless is my beloved Śyāmasundara! How tender is his heart! Oh, how deeply he loves me. I possess neither virtue nor even a trace of beauty, yet my Lord of life loves me so much. Alas, I sit here sulking, and how much pain this must cause his tender heart. Oh, how hardhearted I am!"
As she thinks this, love makes her increasingly restless. Again and again she longs to embrace Śyāmasundara, but modesty surrounds and restrains her. Just then Indulekhā brings a glass of sherbet and places it upon the little jewel-studded stand beside Śyāmasundara.
Śrī Priyā glances sidelong at the glass and immediately remembers that Śyāmasundara drank sherbet in Śaibyā's grove. Rādhārānī thinks, "Śaibyā gave sherbet to my beloved, and my simplehearted Śyāmasundara drank it. But that rustic Śaibyā never considered what a calamity it would be if the drink gave him a chill. Who knows in what kind of vessel it was cooled, or how it was prepared? It is not as though Śaibyā knows how to make sherbet. Perhaps she added too much of one ingredient and forgot another that was essential. She could hardly have attended to such matters. Her only concern was to enjoy the nectar of my beloved's lips, even if Śyāmasundara fell ill. And my Lord of life is so innocent that he accepts whatever anyone places in his hand. I must therefore remain displeased and be a little stern today, so that in the future he will never again accept something from just anyone without first considering it carefully."
Having resolved this, Śrī Priyā remains seated with her head lowered and says nothing. Śyāmasundara descends from the platform and silently pleads with folded hands for Lalitā's help. Taking his hand, Lalitā leads him a little way toward the northwestern corner and whispers, "I shall tell you a way. Somehow win over Rūpamañjarī. Only yesterday evening she sang my beloved Rādhā a song describing your beauty. Rādhā was so delighted that she granted Rūpamañjarī one promise to fulfill any wish. That promise remains outstanding. If Rūpamañjarī is pleased with you, she can use it to ask that Rādhā relinquish her māna."

Although the līlā here is entirely composed of being, consciousness, and bliss and contains not the least trace of material insentience, the sakhīs and maidservants nevertheless perform many different actions so that the līlā may be brought to fulfillment. From time to time, Śrī Rādhā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa become pleased and promise a sakhī or maidservant, “One request of yours, whatever you may ask, shall be granted.” Nearly every sakhī and maidservant keeps such promises as a treasure on deposit, and they spend these outstanding pledges only to make the līlā still sweeter. For example, when Rādhā's māna will not subside, Śyāmasundara entreats a certain sakhī. Reminding Rādhārānī of the promise once granted her, that sakhī asks, “Rānī, my wish today is that you place both arms around Śyāmasundara's neck while I behold the beauty of that sight.” To honor her word, Rādhārānī does so before the sakhī. At once she is overwhelmed by love and her māna dissolves. Parrots, mynahs, and other birds likewise hold outstanding promises of wish fulfillment. Each employs its promise in a wondrous manner, and all savor the delight of the līlā.

Śyāmasundara is delighted to hear this. Sitting down upon the grass, he calls to Rūpamañjarī: "Rūpe, I am thirsty. Bring me a glass of cold water."
Smiling, Rūpamañjarī slowly approaches with a glass of cool water. When she comes near, Śyāmasundara rises, takes her by the shoulders, and says, "Look, you must help me. I have learned that you hold one boon from Rādhā in reserve. Please pacify my beloved Rādhā."
Rūpamañjarī answers softly, "I have only that single treasure. Once I give it away, I shall have nothing left. If an even more urgent occasion arises, I shall have to beg someone else for help. Still, I shall suggest a way. First, you must promise that from now on you will not drink sherbet from just anyone's hand. And if circumstances ever require you to drink it, you must first follow whatever safeguard Rānī prescribes. Do you accept?"
Śyāmasundara replies, "Yes, I accept."
Pleased, Rūpamañjarī says, "Very well. Now do one thing. For the rest of today my Rānī will not be able to remain displeased again. See that mynah sitting there? She too holds an outstanding promise that Rādhā will fulfill one wish. Give her something and win her favor. At Vṛndā's word, the mynah will accomplish your purpose."

Śrī Kṛṣṇa gestures to Vṛndā to call the mynah. Vṛndādevī sits on the edge of the same platform as Rādhārānī, her feet hanging over the side, gazing upon the beauty of Śyāmasundara's lotus face. With a sign she instructs the mynah to go to him. The bird flies over, bows her head at Śyāmasundara's feet, fluffs her feathers, and settles there. Raising her in his hands, Śyāmasundara says, "Beloved śārikā, you hold one outstanding promise from Rādhā. Ask me whatever you desire in exchange, and then use her promise to free my beloved Rādhā from her māna."
Delighted, the mynah asks this boon: "My beloved Śyāmasundara, whenever Śrī Priyā sends me to bring news of you, and I fly to wherever you are and reach you, please call me to your side, if only for a moment."*

The distinguishing feature of Vraja-prema is that it contains not the slightest desire for personal enjoyment. Everyone there acts solely from the wish to give Śrī Rādhā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa the greatest possible joy within their supremely sweet līlā. Only Śrī Rādhārānī herself truly knows the nature of her māna. Yet, judging from the līlā, the saints say that even within māna there is no scent of self-interest. Broadly stated, Śrī Rādhārānī's māna arises for only three reasons:
(1) Śyāmasundara desires that his beloved Rādhā become displeased with him, rebuke and chastise him, and allow him to pacify her. Rādhārānī therefore manifests māna toward Śyāmasundara because he desires it.
(2) When Śyāmasundara does something that might bring him harm, Priyājī assumes māna so that her beloved Śyāmasundara will not do it. This māna arises only to protect her beloved from suffering.
(3) When Śyāmasundara acts in a way that seems likely to give him only a little happiness in place of much greater happiness, Priyājī assumes māna. Here too the sole reason is that her beloved Śyāmasundara should refrain, because by refraining he will receive greater joy.
Thus, whether the residents of Vraja appear outwardly to act favorably or unfavorably, at the root of every action lies the same intention: “May I give Śyāmasundara the greatest possible happiness.”

Śyāmasundara accepts the mynah's request. Delighted, she flies to Rādhārānī, bows her head, and recites a song:
Victory to the ever-fresh lover, the ocean of Kṛṣṇa's happiness, the treasury of every virtue, tenderhearted toward the lowly. Victory to Hari's beloved, lightning beside the dark cloud of Kṛṣṇa, moving with the gait of an elephant, eternally youthful in heart. Victory to the jewel of good fortune, the jewel of love for Kṛṣṇa, the crown jewel of all women. O gracious mistress of this my beloved, grant me this gift, and afterward you may again assume the deepest māna toward Kṛṣṇa.

There is also a secret in the boon asked by the mynah. Her sole purpose is to render Śyāmasundara the greatest possible service. She repeatedly flies out to carry messages to and from him. But when Śyāmasundara is in another grove, in the private bower of Śrī Candrāvalī or her companions, guards at the entrance prevent her from going inside. From the outer branches she can hear everything, but when Śrī Candrāvalī and her sakhīs take Śyāmasundara into the dense inner bower, entry becomes impossible. She therefore asks Śyāmasundara to call her whenever she flies to him. Once he summons her, no one can stop her, and she can hear and understand everything properly before flying back to Rādhārānī. The mynah has no wish to sit beside Śyāmasundara for her own enjoyment. She desires only to bring joy to Śrī Rādhā in the anguish of separation by telling her as much as possible about Śyāmasundara.
This is the inviolable principle of service to Rādhā: wherever there is even the slightest desire for one's own pleasure, there is lust. The beauties of Vraja have no desire whatever for personal happiness. Yet even without seeking it, they receive limitless joy. Their only cause of happiness is that Śyāmasundara is happy. Seeing him laugh and beholding his delighted face, the gopīs are flooded with joy. Seeing the gopīs delighted, Śyāmasundara becomes still more delighted. Seeing him yet more delighted, the beauties of Vraja become still happier; seeing them happy, Śyāmasundara's happiness again increases. Thus, immersed together in an ocean of ever-expanding delight, the līlā of Śrī Priyā and her Beloved, composed entirely of being, consciousness, and bliss, flows ceaselessly and shall continue for all eternity.

English translation
As the mynah recites her song, a smile races across Śrī Rādhā's solemn lotus face. Yet she reflects that she must grant the mynah's wish, while the promise about not drinking sherbet remains incomplete. Rūpamañjarī understands at once and says, "Everything has been settled. Śyāmasundara will no longer thoughtlessly drink sherbet from anyone's hand. He has made that promise before me."
Hearing this, Rādhārānī is pleased and ready to relinquish her māna, but modesty overtakes her. Though she longs to go to Śyāmasundara, she remains where she stands. Śyāmasundara understands that his purpose has been achieved. He climbs onto the platform, removes a garland from his neck, places it around Śrī Rādhā's neck, and says, "Priyatame, today I made this garland for you alone. After making it, I examined how it had turned out. Then I thought: your heart is exceedingly tender, while these flowers are very hard. Surely my own hard heart is the proper place for them. So I wore the garland myself. But the instant I came near you, your shadow fell upon the flowers and they became soft. They have grown so tender that they will no longer remain upon my hard heart. Therefore I now let them swing upon your heart."
Laughing, Rādhārānī says, "Enough, enough, O master poet!" Before he can complete his sentence, she closes Śrī Kṛṣṇa's mouth with the fingers of her right hand. Śrī Kṛṣṇa draws Śrī Rādhārānī to his heart. The sakhīs shower flowers upon them, and the birds perched in the trees sing in supremely sweet voices:
Victory to Rādhā, victory to Rādhā! Rādhe, victory to Rādhā, victory to Śrī Rādhā!
Victory to Kṛṣṇa, victory to Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa, victory to Kṛṣṇa, victory to Śrī Kṛṣṇa!
