May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!

The Blindfold Game Līlā

In Citrā’s grove, Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved sit beneath the shade of a shrub laden with exquisite flowers. Śrī Kṛṣṇa rests His back against its roots, facing north with both legs extended. Śrī Priyā sits at His left in the same manner, though Her right hand rests upon Śyāmasundara’s left shoulder. Lalitā stands a little distance to His right. Before Them, Viśākhā and Citrā hold the two ends of a cloth and strain sherbet through it. The filtered drink falls into a wide-mouthed golden vessel. Rūpamañjarī fills glass after glass from that vessel, while Vimalāmañjarī arranges them upon a great golden tray.

From time to time Śyāmasundara places the flute to His lips and breathes into it once or twice. Its melody resounds through the forest, and for as long as it sounds, the bodies of Rādhārāṇī and the sakhīs tremble with love. Śyāmasundara also steals repeated glances at Śrī Priyā, who smiles and occasionally covers His eyes with Her hands.

At Her signal Rūpamañjarī brings a glass of sherbet and places it in Śrī Priyā’s hands. She raises it to Śyāmasundara’s lips. He takes one sip and again gazes upon the beauty of Her lotus face. Holding the glass in Her right hand, Śrī Priyā covers His eyes with Her left, yet He continues looking at Her through the openings between Her fingers. Slightly abashed, She whispers, “You never abandon Your mischief. Why do You take so long to drink the sherbet?”

Hearing Śrī Priyā, Śyāmasundara lifts His face and laughs. “Very well, I am mischievous, agreed. But have Your coquettish ways diminished at all?”

Śrī Priyā lovingly shakes His head with Her left hand and whispers, “Drink quickly. Lalitā and Viśākhā must send Me outside just now on an errand.”

Still gazing at Her, Śyāmasundara quickly drinks five or seven sips. Śrī Priyā returns the glass to Rūpamañjarī. As the mañjarī steps backward, Śyāmasundara catches the glass and says, “I shall drink a little more.”

He is about to raise it toward Śrī Priyā’s lips when Lalitā arrives. “Look how long You have spent drinking sherbet. Have You forgotten what was agreed yesterday?”

Still holding the glass, Śyāmasundara assumes an expression as though He truly remembers nothing. With feigned surprise He asks, “What happened yesterday?”

Lalitā forcibly takes the glass from His hand, and He releases it without protest. “You have become such a saint,” she says, “as though You remember nothing at all.”

Śyāmasundara smiles. “Yes, now I remember. Just watch, I shall teach all of you at once.”

Lalitā replies, “Enough cleverness. Changing the subject will not help. Try running away today and see how thoroughly I outwit You.”

Śyāmasundara quickly answers, “Yes, yes, I had forgotten. What harm is there? Let us see. I shall not withdraw, but all of you must accept one condition.”

English translation

Lalitā asks, “What condition?”

Śyāmasundara replies, “My beloved Rādhā will cover My eyes.”

“That cannot happen,” says Lalitā. “If Rādhā covers Your eyes, You will still see where I hide. Even if You do not, the moment She sees You distressed, She will signal where I have gone.”

The previous day Śyāmasundara had vowed that if He lost at blindman’s buff, His flute would remain pledged in Rādhārāṇī’s hands for one day. If He did not lose, then whichever among Śrī Rādhā, Lalitā, and the other sakhīs was defeated would become a puppet in His hands for one full hour and obey whatever He said. Because it had grown late, they had not played. Lalitā now reminds and challenges Him.

An argument begins. Śyāmasundara insists that if He must seek, Priyā Rādhā alone will cover His eyes. Lalitā refuses: “I shall not allow Rādhā to do it. Either Viśākhā or Citrā will cover them.”

Vṛndā is appointed arbiter. She announces, “Not like this. I shall mark three flowers with the names Rādhā, Viśākhā, and Citrā and toss them into the sky. Any flower landing face down, with its petals toward the earth and stem toward the sky, will be eliminated, and that person cannot cover His eyes. If all three land face down, a fourth person will do it.”

Vṛndā plucks three flowers from a nearby creeper, marks one Rādhā, another Viśākhā, and the third Citrā, then tosses all three together.

They land at once. Only the flower bearing Rādhārāṇī’s name falls with its petals upward and stem toward the earth. Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s delight knows no bound. Laughing, He claps His hands, while Rādhārāṇī grows a little shy.

Lalitā still holds the glass of sherbet touched by Śyāmasundara’s lips. Smiling, she says, “Very well, we shall see.”

She takes Rādhārāṇī by one hand, leads Her a little westward, turns Her back toward Śyāmasundara, and whispers into Her ear. The Queen listens with a smile. When Lalitā finishes, she raises the glass to the Queen’s lips, and the Queen swiftly drinks four or five sips. Rūpamañjarī immediately arrives with a water ewer and offers water in a golden glass. The Queen rinses Her mouth, casts the water upon the ground, and returns to Lalitā, who stands some distance away in serious thought. Taking the cloth tucked into Lalitā’s waistband, the Queen wipes Her mouth and slowly comes to stand beside Śyāmasundara.

Meanwhile He too has rinsed His mouth. Holding a betel roll offered by Viśākhā, He stands looking toward Śrī Priyā with a gentle smile. When She approaches, He asks, “Well, have You received Your instructions from Queen Lalitā?”

The Queen smiles with immense affection and quietly replies, “A little remains to be learned. I shall learn that while covering Your eyes.” She gently takes His right hand, which holds the betel roll, raises it to His lips, and He places the betel in His mouth.

English translation

The whole company moves eastward to play blindman’s buff. After about twenty yards they reach a place encircled by a round henna bed. Priyā, Her Beloved, and the sakhīs enter through an arched gate. The enclosure is about sixty yards across and surrounded by a henna bed five cubits wide. Four arched gates open in the cardinal directions, each covered with flowering creepers. Inside, shrubs suitable for hiding stand at intervals of five, six, seven, or eight cubits. Many kinds of flowers blossom throughout the garden.

At the center lies an open square extending eight cubits on every side, carpeted in green grass so tender and dense that it resembles fine green velvet. Priyā and Her Beloved sit in the middle facing west. Some sakhīs sit around Them while others stand, gazing upon Śyāmasundara’s lotus face. They now consider who should first become the seeker, whose eyes should first be covered.

To decide, Lalitā picks up a blade of dūrvā grass a span long. Pressing her palms together, she conceals one end within them while the other hangs outside. About two thirds remains visible and one third hidden. “Śyāmasundara,” she says, “You and all my companions must each draw this blade outward a little. Whoever pulls it entirely free will become the first seeker and have their eyes covered.”

Śyāmasundara steps forward and draws the blade slightly, then lovingly tells Rādhārāṇī, “You pull a little.”

Lalitā laughs. “How can She pull? She is the one who will cover Your eyes.”

Śyāmasundara smiles. “And do you imagine you will escape?”

At His sign Viśākhā draws the blade a little, followed by Citrā, Indulekhā, Campakalatā, Tuṅgavidyā, Sudevī, and Raṅgadevī. Most of it has emerged, with only an inch or so concealed. Śyāmasundara draws again, then each sakhī in the same order, yet the blade still does not come free. No one knows its length, so each pulls so cautiously that it moves scarcely the breadth of a grain of rice at every turn.

Śyāmasundara’s turn comes again. The instant He touches the grass, it slips out. Laughing, He takes Lalitā by both shoulders. “You cheated. You deliberately dropped it the moment I touched it.”

“No,” Lalitā replies. “You pulled it. I held it just as before.”

Śyāmasundara releases her and says, “Very well, we shall see. I warn you now: your turn will come next, no matter where you hide.”

The game begins. Vṛndādevī serves as arbiter and Rūpamañjarī becomes the fixed home base. Śyāmasundara sits facing east. Smiling gently, Śrī Priyā comes forward and, from behind, covers both His eyes with Her hands in the utmost tenderness. The instant She touches Him, transformations of love arise in Her limbs. Perspiration suddenly pours from Her body until Her blue sari appears drenched, and Her hands begin to tremble.

Lalitā smiles. “Then the game is already over! Śyāmasundara, You are very clever. This is precisely why You wished to choose Rādhā. Tell us, is there any difference between having Your eyes covered by Her and not having them covered at all?”

The Queen grows shy, then gathers some composure and scolds Lalitā with bashful affection. “Enough, go away! Do you imagine you could cover them better than I?”

Śrī Priyā wipes Her face with Her handkerchief, folds it four times, places it across Śyāmasundara’s eyes, and courageously presses it down with both hands. He raises His hands toward His eyes, but Vṛndā immediately steps before Him. “No, Śyāmasundara, that is unfair. You may not do that. You will loosen Rādhārāṇī’s hands and then see where everyone hides.”

Śyāmasundara laughs. “Very well, I shall not.”

He remains seated cross-legged with both hands upon the ground. Once Vṛndā verifies that His eyes are properly covered, she calls, “One, two!” She also declares, “No one may hide outside the henna enclosure today. Any sakhī who breaks this rule will have her hands bound and be delivered to Śyāmasundara. Whatever punishment He gives her, I shall not interfere.”

At “one, two,” the sakhīs scatter among the shrubs, some east, some west, some north, and some south. When all are hidden, Vṛndā calls loudly, “Three!”

Śrī Rādhā removes the cloth from Śyāmasundara’s eyes. He rises laughing, while Rūpamañjarī seats herself where He had been, becoming the home base. Śrī Rādhā stands behind her and gazes upon Śyāmasundara’s lotus face.

Śyāmasundara looks in all directions and silently asks Śrī Priyā where Lalitā has gone. She smiles, then checks where Vṛndā is looking. Because Vṛndā is watching Them, Priyā thinks, “If I signal anything, Vṛndā will tell Lalitā and Lalitā will quarrel with Me.” She lowers Her head.

Śyāmasundara waits some distance away, confident that His sovereign beloved will somehow signal Him. Śrī Priyā devises a way. She sits to Rūpamañjarī’s right and leans against her back. Before Vṛndā can step in front of Her, Priyā presses both hands to Her heart, smiles, and glances sidelong toward the west. Vṛndā then comes before Her and watches Her face.

Śyāmasundara smiles, showing that He has understood. To protect Śrī Priyā from blame, He pretends to deliberate. First He walks some distance south, passes two shrubs, and returns. Then He heads north. At that moment Tuṅgavidyā runs in from the south, touches home base, and laughs.

Śyāmasundara returns. By the rules, the seeker must stand five cubits from home base so that those in hiding have a chance to run in and touch it. He first stands five cubits south of it, then, returning from the north, stands at the same distance facing south.

Hindi prose

English translation

Lalitā first went west, then after ten or fifteen yards moved secretly through the shrubs and hid to the north. As Śyāmasundara stands deliberating, Viśākhā approaches from the west. He could easily catch and touch her, for she is very near, but He has already announced that He intends to make Lalitā the next seeker. He is intent only upon preventing her from touching home base.

He thinks, “Viśākhā and Tuṅgavidyā have returned. Six remain. Citrā always goes north, so she has probably gone there today as well. Priyā told Me that Lalitā went west, so I shall go west.”

Śyāmasundara moves westward. Seeing Him through an opening in the shrubs, Lalitā starts toward home base. Śrī Priyā’s gaze remains fixed upon Him. Vṛndā moves away from directly before Rādhā’s face and goes west. Once Vṛndā has passed, Śrī Priyā rises and stands looking westward at Śyāmasundara.

Through a gap in a shrub He sees Citrā hidden to the north and says, “Queen Citrā, you need not fear. Go freely. I intend to make Lalitā the seeker.”

Hearing this, the hidden sakhīs grow bold and return one by one. Raṅgadevī approaches from the east, Sudevī from the west, Campakalatā from the northwestern corner, and Indulekhā from the southeastern corner. Each touches home base. Only Citrā and Lalitā remain. Śyāmasundara has seen Citrā, but no one yet knows where Lalitā is.

After reflecting, Śyāmasundara advances beyond the shrubs in the northeastern corner. He passes five or seven bushes and disappears from view. The instant He vanishes, signs of unbearable anguish appear upon Śrī Priyā’s face. Alarmed, She asks, “Viśākhā, where has Śyāmasundara gone? Which way did He go? Oh, Lalitā is so obstinate! Go and call her at once!”

Growing frantic, Rādhārāṇī cries, “Lalitā! Lalitā!” and runs here and there in desperate agitation.

Hearing Her call, Lalitā rushes in from the north. The Queen’s condition has become extraordinary. Tears stream from Her eyes, Her veil has slipped from Her head, and Her braid has loosened and scattered. Like one maddened, She clings to Lalitā and anxiously asks, “Lalitā, where did Śyāmasundara go while searching for you? Look, sister, He has truly left this place. If He were here, He would have returned by now. You came so long ago, but He has not returned.”

While speaking, the Queen faints and falls. Lalitā becomes utterly terrified and tears pour from her eyes. She stands bewildered, unable to decide what to do. Viśākhā and Rūpamañjarī sprinkle cool water over the Queen’s head from a rose-water sprinkler, while Citrā begins to fan Her.

The Queen does not revive. Panic spreads among the sakhīs and every heart fills with grief. Viśākhā repeatedly places her hand near the Queen’s nostrils to ensure that Her breathing has not stopped. Her breath moves only very faintly. Many sakhīs and mañjarīs run about the enclosure crying loudly, “Beloved Śyāmasundara, come quickly! We shall abandon the game. See what has happened to the Queen!”

English translation

No answer comes from Śyāmasundara. In a moment the sakhīs and mañjarīs search every shrub in the enclosure, but find no trace of Him. They return disheartened. Desolation covers Lalitā’s face, and she stands motionless like a painted figure. When the maidservants return without Him, her composure finally breaks. Seeing the Queen’s condition, she laments aloud, “Beloved Śyāmasundara! Not once but a thousand times I shall become the seeker. Please come back. Do not delay!”

The moment she speaks, Śyāmasundara appears from the east, walking with an intoxicating gait. The sakhīs begin to laugh, but Lalitā is so distressed that tears fill her eyes and darkness veils her sight. She is about to collapse when Śyāmasundara catches her. Drawing her to His heart and wiping her tears with a cloth, He lovingly says, “Look, I have returned. Why are you frightened?”

His tender touch calms Lalitā. Yet the combined surge of affection, anger, and joy remains so intense that she stands grave and silent. Delight spreads among the sakhīs, though Rādhārāṇī still lies unconscious.

While fainted in a sakhī’s lap, the Queen experiences that She has wandered deep into the forest searching for Śyāmasundara. She can find Him nowhere, yet from time to time hears the tinkling of His anklets. She imagines that She runs behind Him while He hides and advances ahead. In this absorption She sometimes sits up and sometimes tries to run. Smiling softly and sweetly, Śyāmasundara watches the bewildered līlā of His sovereign beloved. With His return, the sakhīs are no longer afraid, for when He is present they rarely fear any calamity for Śrī Priyā.

They had been deeply alarmed, their minds tormented by doubt. Her separation had become so terrible and affected Her so profoundly that they had begun to despair for Her life. Now Śyāmasundara has returned and is smiling, so they regain courage. Śrī Priyā’s unconsciousness also lessens and becomes a state of devotional absorption. The sakhīs therefore begin watching Her līlā of love.

From time to time Śyāmasundara moves His foot, making His anklets ring, and Śrī Priyā tries to rise and run. In Her absorption She now feels that She has come with a water pot to draw water from the Yamunā. Śyāmasundara stands at a distance casting sidelong glances toward Her. The instant She sees Him, the pot falls from Her head. Alarmed, She gathers Her sari and runs. Reaching home, She collapses unconscious into the sakhīs’ laps, while they ask repeatedly, “Sister, what has happened?”

Rādhārāṇī clearly answers from within that state, “How can I go, dear companion, to fill my water pot?”

Hearing these words, Lalitā, Viśākhā, and the others understand Her mood. Earlier that day, while the Queen waited for Śyāmasundara, the sakhīs had repeatedly urged Her to distract Herself by singing a song upon the vīṇā. In it She had told them of the first awakening of love in Her life. Now, while unconscious, She has truly entered that very mood. Standing beside Śyāmasundara, Viśākhā tells Him about the song they had sung before He arrived.

Śyāmasundara says with great delight, “Sing that song again. I shall accompany you upon the flute.”

Viśākhā immediately has a vīṇā brought. Priyā meanwhile repeats, “How can I go, dear companion, to fill my water pot?” Viśākhā quickly tunes the instrument and begins singing in an exquisitely sweet voice. Śyāmasundara plays with such skill that His flute seems like a second sakhī joining Viśākhā’s melody:

Rāga Deśa

How can I go, dear companion, to fill my water pot? The dark cowherd stands upon the Yamunā’s bank, shooting arrows from His eyes and stealing all awareness from my body. This single worry forever fills my heart: how shall I preserve my honor before the Prince of Vraja? My heart trembles today and cannot remain composed. Is His beauty some magical device, Nārāyaṇa’s spell of enchantment, or a tantric charm that makes one a mendicant in a single moment?

As She listens, Śrī Priyā becomes utterly maddened. She sits up and throws Her arms around the neck of Śyāmasundara, who is seated nearby filling the flute with melody, and begins sobbing. She believes that an urbane cowherd girl has come from somewhere and is singing to Her. After weeping for a while, She asks Śyāmasundara from within that mood, “Sister, tell me, who are you? Where have you come from? Ah, wounded by My beloved Śyāmasundara’s glance, you too suffer just as I do. Stay with Me, sister. Do not leave Me. We shall open our hearts and weep before one another, lightening our hearts through tears.”

Holding Śrī Priyā steady, Śyāmasundara smiles and watches this līlā of love, becoming ever more overwhelmed with bliss. With His loving hand He arranges Her scattered locks. Still absorbed, Śrī Priyā repeatedly asks, “Tell Me, you will not leave Me, will you?”

Seeing Her distress, Śyāmasundara cleverly answers in a soft, feminine voice, “I shall not go. Be at peace.”

Though He speaks very quietly, the eternally familiar voice of Her beloved Lord of life cannot deceive Śrī Priyā’s heart. She starts and opens Her eyes. Her absorption begins to subside. For a while She gazes without blinking at beloved Śyāmasundara’s lotus face. Gradually full external awareness returns, and She realizes that before all the sakhīs She sits utterly disheveled with Her arms around His neck. The Queen rises at once and, deeply embarrassed, adjusts Her veil. Śyāmasundara bursts into laughter. The sakhīs and mañjarīs laugh openly, and even Lalitā, who had remained grave until now, breaks into laughter.

Seeing Śrī Priyā so embarrassed, Śyāmasundara changes the subject. “Beloved, look, Lalitā has lost. Her eyes must now be covered. Moreover, she has freely agreed to have them covered a thousand more times. Under the rules she must also become a puppet in My hands for one hour and dance exactly as I direct. Vṛndā, you are arbiter. Tell Me if anything I say is unfair.”

Lalitā looks at Him with loving eyes. “I thoroughly outwitted You, but what can I do? I become helpless because of this maddened friend Rādhā.”

Śyāmasundara laughs. “What difficulty is there? Play again and fulfill your heart’s desire.”

The Queen immediately interrupts, “No, no, I have had enough. I shall not allow any more blindfold games!”

Śyāmasundara, Lalitā, and all the sakhīs laugh freely. Śyāmasundara draws Śrī Priyā to His heart, and Priyā and Her Beloved walk arm in arm toward Citrā’s grove to rest.
