English translation

Evening is drawing near. No sunlight remains before Nanda Bābā's palace, for the palace faces east. Directly before it, a broad and beautiful marble road runs eastward. On both sides stand the magnificent palaces of other cowherds, each joined to an enchanting garden.

One furlong, one-sixteenth of a kosa, east of Nanda's palace stands Śrī Rādhārānī's palace. Small aśoka trees line both sides of the road at intervals of ten cubits. Their fresh green leaves sway in the evening gusts. The wind is blowing rather strongly today, and a few small patches of cloud drift across the blue sky.

English translation

It is now the hour when Śyāmasundara returns from the forest. Crowds of gopīs gather beside the trees lining both sides of the road. On palace terraces and at windows, wherever the eye turns, only gopīs can be seen. Lovely saris of blue, yellow, green, red, and many other colors adorn their sacred forms. Affection overflows from every lotus face, and all gaze eastward in eager expectation.

English translation

Awaiting Śrī Śyāmasundara, Śrī Rādhārānī sits upon the highest terrace of Her palace. The velvet-cushioned seat, shaped like a cane bench, is four or five cubits long. Priyājī sits upon it facing east with Her feet hanging down, Her right hand resting upon Śrī Lalitā's left shoulder. Lalitā sits beside Her on the right. Several sakhīs stand behind the seat, leaning their hands upon it. Seated at Her feet, Rūpamañjarī gently rubs Priyājī's soles with a blue cloth.

Before Priyājī, Ratnamañjarī sits upon the terrace placing betel leaves on a golden tray and preparing folded quids. A little way to Priyājī's left stands Anaṅgamañjarī, holding a fan of blue silk. She does not fan Her, for the air is cool and the natural wind is already blowing briskly.

Facing north about two yards from Lakṣmamañjarī, Madhumatīmañjarī begins to sing at Priyājī's signal. Her vīṇā sounds exceedingly sweet. Madhumatī sings:

English translation

Come, ornament of Vraja, delight of the heart. Please hasten home from the forest.
O compassionate son of Yaśodā, come awaken happiness within my heart.
Let Your peacock plume sway, and let Your pair of earrings flash.
As You dance and turn with the melody, let stray curls fall across Your face.

Cast Your twin eyes here and there with feeling and make them sparkle.
Let the moon of Your face pour cooling peace into the heart.
With the tender movement of Your two feet, increase the sandal-scented breeze.
Fill every opening of the flute with the nectar of Your lips.

Sing the virtues of the gopīs and let their sound enter our ears.
Let the graceful swaying of Your lovely neck make us forget even to blink.
Reveal the beauty of Your throat and make us forget the condition of our bodies.
Place upon Your breast the necklace with its ruby amid elephant pearls.

Let ornaments beautify both wrists, and hang dark tassels from them.
Wear armlets upon Your arms and drive their image deep into my heart.
Arrange the sash of Your yellow garment beautifully about Your waist.
Set the sweetly ringing row of tiny bells above it.

Let the anklets upon Your feet sound in their own wondrous fashion.
Let the radiance of Your jeweled nails put every other light to shame.
Drive the herds before You and playfully follow behind them.
Show the flower-knotted herding staff resting upon Your shoulder.

Appear as the unrivaled leader amid the circle of cowherd boys.
On the pretext of dancing, raise the dust of Vraja beneath Your feet.
As You run, whirl a play-lotus in Your left hand.
Make the clusters of Your forest garland leap and turn around Your neck.

Move among the young women of Vraja and bestow the touch of Your limbs.
Embrace them in many ways and fulfill all their longings.
Draw to Your breast every sakhī tormented by separation.
Restore Your Vraja, desolate without You, at the coming of dusk.

Come to the gate of the settlement and arrive with splendor, as though leading a wedding procession.
Give joy to all the settlement and end the separation of this day.
Hearing the young women of Vraja call in this way, come home to Nanda's house.
Grant this boon to the rasikas: may they forever attain the feet of Śrī Vallabha.

English translation

As the song ends, the exceedingly sweet sound of a flute is heard far away in the east. Priyājī rises from Her seat and gazes there with intense yearning. First a few cows come into view. Then, three furlongs east of the Queen's palace, Śyāmasundara appears surrounded on every side by cows. A company of cowherd friends accompanies Him. One plays tiny jingling cymbals, another plays a larger pair of cymbals, and another comes dancing and clapping his hands.

Original

English translation

Śyāmasundara Himself plays the flute in an exquisitely sweet tone. The cows leap with uplifted tails. He plays with His left hand and, from time to time, reaches out with His right to touch and calm them. Smiling gently, He advances west along the road. As He passes each gopī, she falls in behind Him, and thus the procession of gopīs grows ever larger.

Original

English translation

Gopīs pour in from both sides until the road is completely blocked. Śrī Kṛṣṇa looks behind and then ahead, smiling. The pressure from the gopīs at the rear pushes all the cows forward, leaving Him surrounded entirely by gopīs. His yellow garment flutters in the wind, and one of them seizes it. Even His cowherd friends are pressed four or five cubits away from Him.

Original

English translation

Śrī Kṛṣṇa reaches the front of Rādhārānī's palace. Trying to part the crowd with both hands, He smiles at the gopīs before Him. "Wild girls, give Me a little path."

One gopī laughs. "Śyāmasundara, the road is closed today."

He answers softly, "Then see that you do not abuse Me afterward. I shall make a path for Myself."

Original

English translation

Smiling, the gopī tries to pull away His yellow garment while Śrī Kṛṣṇa holds fast to it. Meanwhile Rādhārānī has descended from the terrace and stands at a distance beside an aśoka tree. His gaze falls upon Her. With a movement of His brows He seems to ask, "What shall I do? I am thoroughly trapped. The road is blocked."

Rādhārānī gestures as though replying, "Beloved of My life, all the gopīs wish to snatch away Your yellow garment. Let them take it. What harm will it do You?"

At once Śyāmasundara becomes as many forms as there are gopīs.

Original

English translation

One Śrī Kṛṣṇa now stands before every gopī, forming an alternating line of gopī and Kṛṣṇa. Each gopī holds one end of His yellow garment, and each Kṛṣṇa tries to free it from her grasp.

Original

English translation

Mother Yaśodā comes running from afar. Kṛṣṇa has been swallowed by the crowd, and she cannot bear it. Fearing that the gopīs may hurt her darling boy, she races in from the west, forcing her way through them.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa whispers, "Girl, release Me. Mother is coming."

Yaśodā approaches, scolding loudly, "You rustic girls! Are you all going to crush my darling?"

Original

English translation

Seeing Mother Yaśodā approach, Kṛṣṇa's friends take courage and push more forcefully against the crowd. Her arrival gives them fresh strength. Śrī Kṛṣṇa frees His yellow garment, and the gopīs shrink back. When Yaśodā reaches Him, He falls at her feet in reverence. She calls loudly to them all, "Move aside, girls. At least let Him have some air."

Original

English translation

The gopīs roll their eyes as though telling Śrī Kṛṣṇa, "Very well, Śyāmasundara. Mother saved You today, but there will be another time!"

The crowd gradually recedes, though the gopīs remain encircling Him at a distance of five or seven cubits. Yaśodā seats Him in her lap and fans Him with the end of her garment. Nandarānī's maidservants arrive with sprinklers and fans, cutting through the crowd. Dāūjī, who had also been separated in the crush, forces his way through and joins them. Śyāmasundara's friends return as well, but they are greatly annoyed. They glare at the gopīs with flared nostrils and angry eyes.
