May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!

The Parrot and Myna Debate Līlā

A beautiful seat has been arranged upon the kadamba platform. Seated there in a circular row, Śrī Priyā honors fruit-prasāda moistened with the nectar of beloved Śyāmasundara’s lips. Lalitā sits on Her right and Viśākhā on Her left. Continuing around to Lalitā’s right sit Citrā, Indulekhā, Campakalatā, Raṅgadevī, Tuṅgavidyā, and Sudevī. A small opening remains at the southern side of the row, through which the mañjarīs pass from time to time to serve water and other articles. Anaṅgamañjarī, Pālikāmañjarī, Dhanyāmañjarī, and Śyāmalāmañjarī stand at the four sides, each holding a tray adorned with small dishes. From these they periodically serve items onto the sakhīs’ plates.

At first Śrī Priyā drinks four or five sips of juice and a little panasa nectar from a cup. Now She holds a piece of fruit and smiles, glancing first at Campakalatā and then at Raṅgadevī as though saying, “Look! You sit there with your plate, but see how much I have eaten.”

Śrī Priyā’s eyes rest upon the row of sakhīs, but Her mind is where beloved Śyāmasundara lies resting. Her gaze therefore becomes still from time to time. Lalitā begins placing small pieces of orange and grape into Priyā’s mouth, and Śrī Priyā continues eating them. Once Lalitā is satisfied that she has put something into Her stomach, so that no serious difficulty will arise even if She eats nothing with Her own hand, Lalitā places one or two pieces of fruit in her own mouth and says, “Look, all of us are eating. You also eat something.”

English translation

The Queen’s mind is not present there at all. It returns for a thousandth part of a moment, then dives again into the ocean of beloved Śyāmasundara’s beauty. She seems not to hear Lalitā. She thinks, “Ah! If only I had millions of eyes, one eye in every pore of My body, and if their lids never closed, then perhaps I could taste a little of the nectar of beloved Śyāmasundara’s beauty. What shall I do? Whom shall I ask? I know, I shall pray: O Creator...”

Her thought suddenly reverses. “Oh, Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! What am I thinking? No, never! O Creator, I forgot Myself. I swear I was not conscious, and that is why I was about to pray to you. I shall never say such a thing. Alas, how much pain My beloved Śyāmasundara would suffer! How distressed He would be to see Me in such a form! My heart’s treasure embraces Me, kisses My cheeks, and laughs in delight. Just now He was so pleased while arranging My hair, braiding it, and fastening anklets upon My feet. Yet I am so base that, for My own pleasure, I began thinking of destroying His joy. With eyes in every pore I would become deformed. What happiness could that give My beloved Śyāmasundara? No, never. I shall keep only two eyes. Yes, two eyes are all I desire.”

None of the sakhīs imagines the current flowing through the Queen’s inner heart. Smiling, Lalitā looks toward the sakhīs on her left and repeatedly says, “Why will You not eat something? Will You merely sit there silently?”

The Queen gives no answer, though now and then She breaks off a rice-grain-sized morsel of fruit and slowly places it in Her mouth. Lalitā quietly tells Citrā, “Find some means, as you did yesterday.”

Hearing Lalitā, Citrā smiles and rises. She quickly washes her hands and mouth, dries them with a cloth, and sits behind the Queen. Bringing her lips near the Queen’s ear, she whispers, “Sister, we must make the arrangements for the day after tomorrow today, and before beloved Śyāmasundara wakes. So please eat something quickly.”

As soon as these words enter Her ears, the Queen’s mind flows into another current of feeling. The previous day Priyā and the sakhīs had planned a līlā with beloved Śyāmasundara. Citrā would disguise herself as the Queen, while the Queen would assume Citrā’s appearance. Disguised as the Queen, Citrā would feign offended jealousy toward Śyāmasundara. From a peephole in the grove, the true Queen would watch whether He could detect the deception. If He recognized Citrā, there would be nothing more to see. If He did not, they would observe how He tried to appease the supposed Queen and how long Citrā could maintain her role. Whenever the Queen Herself becomes offended, Her displeasure never lasts long. She had therefore also consented to the līlā in the hope that by watching Citrā She might learn how to sustain Her own māna.

The Queen’s thoughts immediately turn toward this plan. She puts one piece of fruit in Her mouth and rises, and the sakhīs rise with Her. Wishing to wash Her own hands, She takes with Her left hand the ewer Rūpamañjarī is holding. Lalitā and the others smile at Her haste. Smiling herself, Rūpamañjarī begins pouring water over the Queen’s hands. The Queen quickly washes and moves to wash Lalitā’s and the others’ hands, but they have already done so. Seeing this loving gesture, Lalitā embraces the Queen with intense eagerness. They dry their hands and mouths and set out again for the chamber where Śyāmasundara rests.

English translation

On reaching the chamber, the sakhīs see beloved Śyāmasundara apparently sunk in deep sleep. From a little distance the Queen gazes upon Her Beloved’s lotus face. Fearing that His sleep might break, She quietly steps backward and sits upon an exquisitely adorned platform seven or eight cubits northwest of the bed. It is four yards wide, four yards long, and a cubit and a half high. A blue velvet cushion fills its center, while lotus flowers are beautifully strung around all four sides. Leaning against a bolster, the Queen sits facing beloved Śyāmasundara, and the sakhīs sit upon the same platform.

A mañjarī brings the betel-spittoon from beside Śyāmasundara’s bed. With great love the Queen takes it Herself. A betel casket rests upon the platform. She removes eight prepared rolls, opens them, places two drops of the betel nectar touched by Her Beloved’s lips into each, closes and adorns them, then lovingly places one into each sakhī’s mouth with Her own hand. Meanwhile Citrā prepares two rolls in the same way, mingling them with the nectar of His lips, and places them in the Queen’s mouth. The Queen takes out one more leaf for each sakhī and feeds them again. Giving that casket to Campakalatā, She washes Her hands. She receives another casket from a mañjarī, lays out the leaves, and begins preparing rolls for beloved Śyāmasundara, Her gaze returning every moment to His lotus face.

A deeply affectionate conversation now begins among the sakhīs. Śyāmasundara is not asleep at all, but lies pretending so that He may hear their loving discussion. He listens intently to their quiet words, though no one imagines He is awake. Indulekhā signals to the two mañjarīs standing on either side of His bed. They signal back that He is sound asleep. The Queen and the sakhīs begin speaking freely, though in hushed voices, and discuss their loving plan for some time.

Hindi prose

English translation

Lalitā says, “When they arrive, close the grove, understood?”

Citrā replies, “Very well!”

Lalitā continues, “At that time I shall remain with Rādhikā in Madana-kuñja. After shutting Śyāmasundara inside, send Campakalatā to inform me.”

Campakalatā asks, “Lalitā, but what will you do about Śuka?”

Viśākhā answers, “Tomorrow I shall use Madhumaṅgala to catch him in the snare. I shall feed Madhumaṅgala fine bananas tomorrow and invite him to eat purīs the day after. It is difficult to tempt Śuka through greed, but let me try this means once. If it fails, I shall keep him detained in my grove by some other device.”

Just then Śyāmasundara turns over. A mañjarī makes a sign, and Rādhārāṇī and Lalitā cast a penetrating glance upon Him. His feigned sleep is exposed. The Queen whispers into Lalitā’s ear, “The whole plan has turned to dust.”

Lalitā replies, “Never mind, I shall devise another plan. But this crown jewel of deceivers has truly surpassed all bounds. Just a moment ago, how loudly He was snoring!”

The Queen rises and stands beside Śyāmasundara’s flower bed. He has covered His face with the sheet, yet His lotus face is still visible through it. The beauty of His closed eyes seems to pierce the thin covering and bind Her heart. Clusters of curling locks lie scattered across His cheeks. The Queen removes the sheet so that She may set those curls in place with Her lotus-like hands. Śyāmasundara tries to suppress His laughter, but a trace of its guileless playfulness appears upon His lips. The Queen laughs. He opens His eyes and gazes about as if He had just awakened from profound sleep, and the Queen and all the sakhīs burst into ringing laughter.

English translation

The Queen bends down, places both arms around beloved Śyāmasundara’s neck, and gazes for some moments upon His lotus face with a teasing glance. Then She asks, “You were sleeping so soundly. How did You awaken?” As She speaks, She breaks into laughter once more.

The Queen’s forest garland swings over beloved Śyāmasundara’s chest, while in the force of love Her veil has slipped onto Her back. Seeing His Priyā in this condition, transformations of love arise in Śyāmasundara’s body. Tiny drops of perspiration glisten like pearls upon His lotus face. With immense tenderness the Queen wipes away the perspiration with Her veil, slowly raises Him, and seats Him upon the bed. Sitting beside Him, She laughs and asks, “Now tell us, which of our conversations did You hear?”

With a look of surprise Śyāmasundara asks, “What conversations?”

Lalitā laughs. “Enough of Your cleverness. You falsely pretended to sleep, very well. Be careful, I shall repay You with interest!”

Śyāmasundara laughs and says, “Very well.”

At that moment Vṛndā enters the grove with many mañjarīs before her. When the Queen had gone to the kadamba platform to honor beloved Śyāmasundara’s prasāda, Vṛndā had followed. After the Queen and the sakhīs had eaten, Vṛndā lovingly fed prasāda to the mañjarīs and maidservants, accepted a little herself only at the end, completed every remaining task, and now arrived. As soon as she enters, the parrot and myna in the cage she had earlier placed in the grove cry out together, “Goddess, if you permit, I shall go outside once and tell the birds to sit quietly. They are making a great commotion.”

Hearing the caged birds, Vṛndā says, “Remain seated. I shall go myself.”

She enters the eastern side of the grove and peers outside through an opening. The sakhīs, the Queen, and Śyāmasundara look first toward Vṛndā and then toward the parrot and myna, filled with wonder. Vṛndā stands silently for a few moments, then begins to smile. Returning quickly on tiptoe, she first bursts into laughter, composes herself, and asks, “Beloved Śyāmasundara, would You like to see a spectacle?”

“Yes, certainly,” He replies. “Show Me.”

Vṛndā says, “Then come, all of you, absolutely silently behind me. Take care that not the slightest sound is made, or the sport will be spoiled.”

Filled with curiosity, the sakhīs, the Queen, and Śyāmasundara follow Vṛndā into the eastern grove. There stands a bench-shaped seat made from exceedingly tender green leaves. Vṛndādevī signals Priyā and Her Beloved to sit upon it facing north, and They do so. Some sakhīs stand holding the seat while others sit. The grove becomes crowded with sakhīs and maidservants, yet perfect silence prevails. Vṛndā whispers, “Everyone look at that tree.”

Through an opening in the creepers she points to a tree eight cubits north of the grove. It resembles a jhāū tree, yet is much greener and more luxuriant. Its leaves have the shape of jhāū leaves, but are so lush and dense that words fail to describe them. Its thick boughs possess no roughness at all. Their color resembles pale yellow cloth speckled with green.

English translation

Flocks of many-colored birds sit upon the bough and throughout the tree’s branches. At times many call out together, “Right! Right!” At other times they sit utterly still. Most appear like elders appointed to a village council, absorbed in grave deliberation. Upon a thick branch extending westward sits a parrot facing east, while a sārī, a myna, sits facing west.

Vṛndādevī quietly tells everyone, “Look, these two birds are quarreling. The other birds sit listening to them. I brought you here to witness how extraordinary their dispute is.”

Everyone fixes an eager gaze upon the parrot and myna. The sārī declares, “Very well, but from this day I shall never speak to you again.”

The parrot replies, “Whether you speak to me is your choice, but tell me yourself, how can I utter a lie merely for your sake?”

“No, no,” says the sārī. “Do not lie. Uphold the religion of truth. But there is no longer any bond between us.”

The parrot says, “Sārī, what is gained by becoming angry like this? We have not yet determined the truth.”

She replies, “Brother, I have told you many times that I do not know the truth. What is gained by tormenting me again and again?”

“I do not wish to torment you,” says the parrot. “I merely began this discussion after repeatedly hearing you say that Śyāmasundara is terribly cruel. Had I known you would become vexed, I would never have raised the subject.”

English translation

The sārī answers sarcastically, “Very well, I was mistaken. Listen! Not once but a thousand times I now say that Śyāmasundara is supremely relishable, supremely relishable, greatly compassionate, greatly compassionate. Enough, do not speak to me again.”

She turns eastward. After sitting silently for a while, the parrot flies around and comes before her. “Sārī, consider this seriously. I swear by you, I am not obstinately determined to reject whatever you say. I simply cannot understand why you have come to regard my beloved Śyāmasundara as cruel. I firmly believe that if you fixed your gaze upon His eyes even for a few moments, you could never speak so again.”

The sārī remains silent, but smiles arise upon the faces of Priyā, Her Beloved, and the sakhīs. Vṛndā again warns them not to make the slightest sound, lest the sport be spoiled.

The sārī says, “Brother, I have said it already, many times. I was wrong and you are right. Why needlessly prolong the discussion?”

The parrot grows solemn, closes his eyes, and after a moment murmurs to himself, “Śyāmasundara, beloved of my life! Śyāmasundara, beloved of my life! Śyāmasundara, beloved of my life!”

The sweetness of his voice awakens love within the sārī. Drawn into the nectar of Śyāmasundara’s name, she forgets her anger and looks toward the parrot.

He continues, “Truly, Sārī, look into my heart. I do not speak falsely. Never has my heart found Śyāmasundara cruel. Your Queen, however, sometimes appears cruel to me. Do you not remember that day when your Queen sat beneath a jamun tree in a moonlit grove beside the Yamunā? Her beauty was wondrous.”

English translation

First come and behold the proud beloved’s splendor, then, dear Govinda, seek to reconcile Her. Her head rests upon Her hand, Her eyes are closed, as though the full moon slept upon a bed of lotuses. Her anger-laden brows are like restless bees, hovering below the moon where the lotus fills with nectar. Nandadāsa says: Lord, do not leave such a beloved displeased, for one sight of Her face dispels every sorrow and conflict.

The parrot says, “Your Queen sat there that day in wondrous beauty. Sārī, I speak truth, not merely to please you. Her beauty has bewildered me many times. From afar I felt that the splendor of limitless newly blossomed lotuses grew pale before Her. When I looked upon Her lotus face, the radiance of countless moons seemed not equal to even a moment of its beauty. As for the region of Her shoulders, language has no power to describe it. But if I may descend a little lower, that day, as She rested Her cheek upon Her hand, it seemed that the full moon slept upon a lotus seat. The remainder of Her beauty was equally incomparable. Her brows were raised in anger and exquisitely curved. Seeing that face and those brows, it seemed that swarms of bees, mistaking Her nectar-filled lotus face for a flower, hovered there awaiting its honey. Every pore of my body filled with delight. I was astonished and could not remove my eyes.

“Just then Lalitā arrived, holding beloved Śyāmasundara by the hand. My Beloved sat at the Queen’s feet and pleaded with all the love in His heart, but your Queen did not even open Her eyes. Beloved Śyāmasundara’s face grew despondent, yet the Queen did not stir. He went and sat some distance away. Sārī, you too were present. Tell me from your own mouth which of Them appeared more cruel.”

English translation

Hearing the parrot describe the Queen’s beauty, the sārī is pleased. Then, reflecting on something else, she says with a delighted expression, “Parrot, you know nothing of the inner truth. You judged the Queen cruel from outward appearances alone. I have learned the full secret of Her profound māna that day from the Queen’s own dear sārī, but I shall not tell you. You could not understand it. A woman’s subtle heart is needed, while yours is a male heart. The contour of the Queen’s love-filled heart cannot even enter your imagination.”

She falls silent. The parrot quickly says, “Yes, yes, say everything you wish to say. Tell me the whole account.”

After a moment she continues, “The incident from which you consider my Queen cruel only shows your lack of understanding. If I opened the wound in my own heart and showed it to you, your voice would be stopped and you could give no reply. Without doubt you would understand how cruel this Śyāmasundara is.”

Growing solemn, the parrot asks, “Then let me hear. What cruelty have you seen in my beloved Śyāmasundara?”

With a grave and compassionate expression the sārī begins, “Parrot, my life has truly been writhing since yesterday. At noon yesterday my Queen sat entirely alone in the Sūrya temple. Lalitā and all the others had gone into the garden, while I sat upon the branch of a creeper and gazed unwaveringly at Her. A rosary rested loosely upon Her fingers. Her eyes were closed, yet unbroken streams of tears bathed Her cheeks. From time to time She cried, ‘Sole treasure of My life! In every condition I am Yours.’ Parrot, I was overcome as I witnessed that exalted state of love. Then I saw something that astonished me. The Queen suddenly rose and wandered here and there, murmuring to Herself. At first Her voice was indistinct, but when She spoke louder I heard clearly:

“‘I would sacrifice millions of living kinsmen, and the smiling moon of nectar; I would sacrifice millions upon millions of moons to Rādhā’s moonlike face.’

“She repeated this again and again. I wondered that the Queen was praising Her own beauty, but immediately understood: possessed by the mood of beloved Śyāmasundara, She now considered Herself to be Him. Resting Her hands beneath Her chin, She cried, ‘Oh! I have searched every grove of Vraja and every corner of the house, yet I cannot find Priyā. She has left Me, but where has She gone? Alas, has She given up Her life? Has She leapt into the Yamunā? Then I too shall leap into the river and end My life. But what if She still lives? Without Me, Her life would then depart. No, She has not died. She is hiding somewhere. Has She gone to Barsānā? Yes, that must be it. But how shall I reach there? Queen of My life, You have left Me in displeasure. You have acted rightly, for this is what I deserve. Yet, My beloved, My heart is breaking. I cannot live even a moment without You. Sovereign of My heart, I cannot bear so severe a punishment. Forgive Me! What shall I do? Whom shall I tell? If only someone would carry My message to My beloved. I shall write a letter, and let someone give it to Her. Somehow I shall preserve My life until Her reply comes.’

“Saying this, the Queen sat down. Flowers lay upon a lotus leaf nearby. She scattered them, tore the leaf into four pieces, took one, and wrote upon it with Her fingernail:

“‘Forgive Me. Never again shall I behave toward You in such a way. O beautiful one, grant Me Your sight, for the god of love torments Me.’”

English translation

“After writing this, the Queen entered samādhi. Some time later She opened Her eyes, looked at the leaf, and exclaimed in delight, ‘Has My Lord sent a letter? Let Me read what He has written.’

“She read it, pressed it to Her heart, and began murmuring again, ‘Ah, treasure of My life! You have committed no offense. Who has told You this lie? I am not displeased. From where have You written this letter? Who knows what condition You are in? Lalitā! Viśākhā! Rūpa! Vimalā! Where have you all gone? Run and find beloved Śyāmasundara. He wrote this letter in a state of anguish. Ah, Lord of My life, without Me You...’

Rādhikā meditates upon Kānha, then, becoming Kānha, sings Rādhikā’s virtues. Thus Her tears pour down, while toward Barsānā She writes a letter and meditates upon Rādhā. In a moment She becomes Rādhā again, says Deva, and lovingly presses that letter to Her breast. Within Herself She becomes entangled, then untangles and loosens the knot, understanding and consoling Herself.

“Speaking thus, She pressed the letter to Her breast once more and entered samādhi. Parrot, I stood bewildered as to what I should do, but at once flew to inform Śyāmasundara. I found Him a short distance away, yet the sight made me burn from head to foot. Beneath a tree sat Śyāmasundara, and before Him sat an exceedingly beautiful woman. He was painting designs in sandal paste upon her cheeks. I could not endure it. Only moments before I had seen the Queen in that condition of separation from Him, and now I saw Him like this! As I thought upon it, I fainted. I do not know how long passed before I regained consciousness. Śyāmasundara was no longer there, so I flew back to the Sūrya temple. It was filled with bustling activity, and Śyāmasundara was showering boundless love upon my Queen. Ever since that moment I have repeated like one deranged: Śyāmasundara is terribly cruel and terribly deceitful.”

As she speaks, the sārī grows impassioned and cries aloud, “Parrot, accept it or not, but Śyāmasundara is truly cruel, deceitful, and wanton. I shall say it a thousand times, a hundred thousand times!”

All the birds in the tree turn in astonishment. Śyāmasundara pushes open the northern door of the grove and emerges with His arm resting upon Priyā’s shoulder. The sakhīs and Vṛndā follow. He signals Vṛndā to call the parrot and sārī, and they come. Lalitā laughs and says, “Sārī, you speak truly. He is exceedingly wanton.”

The sārī becomes ashamed.

Śyāmasundara says, “Friend, come. I shall settle the dispute.”

He lifts the sārī onto His own hand and places the parrot upon the Queen’s hand. Then He tells Vṛndā, “Ask the parrot what he sees.”

Vṛndā asks, “Parrot, tell us, what do you see?”

In a sweet voice brimming with delight the parrot exclaims, “Ah! In every pore and every atom of the Queen I behold beloved Śyāmasundara.”

Filled with joy, Vṛndā asks the sārī, “And what do you see?”

With a voice choked by emotion she replies, “Victory! In every pore and every atom of beloved Śyāmasundara dwells my Rādhārāṇī. Victory! Victory!”

All the birds join her cry: “Victory! Victory! Victory! Victory!”

Śyāmasundara has nuts brought and feeds the parrot and sārī with His own hand. After eating, the two bow their heads at the feet of Priyā and Her Beloved and return to the tree. Śyāmasundara scatters a heap of nuts, and the flock descends upon it. Even as they peck, the birds continue calling, “Victory! Victory!” Priyā and Her Beloved walk ten paces north and stand beneath the shade of a panasa tree.
