English translation

May Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved be victorious!

The Bathing Līlā

Having returned from the secluded grove, Śrī Priyā is lying upon a beautiful bed in a chamber of Her palace. Her head is toward the south and Her feet toward the north. Her eyes are closed, and a light-blue sheet covers Her body below the neck. She appears to be asleep, but in truth Priyā is awake. A mañjarī sits on the bed near the soles of Her feet, her own feet dangling over the side and her gaze fixed upon Śrī Priyājī.

English translation

The mañjarīs and sakhīs are busy with many tasks. One prepares fragrant bathing paste, another grinds sandalwood, another fills ewers with water, and another places different oils and perfumes in tiny bowls. One takes out tooth powder and sets it in a small cup; another lays out Śrī Priyā’s garments. Some are going to bathe while others return, making a continuous procession between the Queen’s palace and the bank of the Yamunā. One spreads clothes upon a gleaming line, another combs her hair, another quickly braids hers, and another applies collyrium to her eyes. Some mañjarīs arrange freshly churned butter in handsome large vessels; one sets pots of milk upon the hearth to warm, while others put every article neatly in its proper place. Two or three swiftly fashion flower garlands for Priyā to wear, and another gathers the articles for Her worship of Tulasī. Thus the whole palace is astir, though every task is performed with the utmost quiet. All take care to make no sound, lest Priyā’s eyes, if sleep has perhaps touched them, should open.

English translation

Now and then comes a faint chiming, the soft jingle of the sakhīs’ and mañjarīs’ bracelets and waist-bells. At intervals the tinkling of anklets is also heard. The very sound of their own ornaments makes them wonder for a moment whether beloved Śyāmasundara might be approaching.

English translation

In the northern part of the chamber where Śrī Priyā lies, Lalitā stands and quickly completes her own adornment. A mañjarī wishes to assist, but Lalitā smiles and gestures with her hand: “Wait there! I shall finish dressing myself in just a moment.”

She swiftly braids her hair with her own hands and draws the end of her veil over her head. A mañjarī stands nearby holding a tray. Lalitā takes none of its articles; she merely dips the ring finger of her right hand into a little bowl of ground musk and places a lovely round mark upon her forehead. Smiling after applying it, she makes an identical mark upon the mañjarī’s forehead with the same finger. Lalitā whispers something in her ear. The mañjarī sets the tray against the wall and promptly leaves the chamber, while Lalitā goes to the bed on which the Queen is lying.

English translation

Lalitā quietly sits beside the Queen’s shoulder and gazes at Her lotus face. After looking for a few moments, she tenderly strokes the Queen’s forehead. The Queen opens Her eyes. Bending close to Her face with deep affection, Lalitā asks softly, “Did sleep come or not? Tell me truly.”

A grave smile spreads across the Queen’s face. She says nothing, but closes Her eyes again for a moment. Then, opening them, She grasps Lalitā’s left shoulder with Her right hand. Lalitā asks again, “Well? Will You not tell me?”

With a solemn expression, the Queen replies, “What am I to do when sleep will not come?”

English translation

At the Queen’s words Lalitā’s eyes fill with love, but concealing her emotion she says, “The sun has risen. In only a little while Baḍāī or Dhaniṣṭhā will arrive. Make Yourself ready.”

At once the Queen gathers the sheet around Herself and, supporting Herself with Her left hand upon Lalitā’s shoulder, sits up on the bed. The instant She rises, Śyāmasundara’s enchanting form begins to dance before Her eyes, as though He truly stood there in person. Since yesterday the Queen’s condition has become extraordinary. Again and again She calls aloud to Śyāmasundara. Through many ingenious devices Lalitā has managed, with great difficulty, to hide Her condition from Her elders. At moments the Queen regains enough awareness to realize that She has been speaking wildly; then, understanding the troubles this causes Lalitā, She clings to her and weeps. But soon She forgets once more. Since daybreak Lalitā has remained vigilant, determined somehow to keep this love-maddened Rādhā calm until they all reach Śyāmasundara. Therefore, as soon as the Queen sits up, Lalitā rises quickly, gently takes Her hand, and says, “Wash Your hands and face, and meanwhile I shall tell You some wonderful news.”

English translation

The Queen’s mind fills with eager curiosity, and the current of Her attention divides. Although Śyāmasundara’s meditated form remains visible to Her, the desire to hear Lalitā prevents Her from becoming fully absorbed in it. She springs to Her feet and quickly reaches a beautifully arranged stool for washing. Sitting upon it facing north, She lets a mañjarī pour water over Her hands. Śrī Priyā washes, rinses Her mouth, and applies intensely fragrant red tooth powder to Her teeth. Yet so divine and captivating is the fragrance arising naturally from Her own mouth that the scent of the powder pales before it. After rinsing again, She is about to clean Her tongue with a flat, slender scraper that gleams with golden wire, but sits silently holding it, as though She has entirely forgotten why She came to cleanse Her mouth.

Smiling, Lalitā approaches, bends down, and gently shakes the Queen’s hand. “Now I am going to tell You. Listen carefully!”

The Queen starts slightly and says, “Yes, yes,I had completely forgotten. Tell me!” She quickly cleans Her tongue, rinses, wipes Her hands upon Her veil, and asks, “Now tell me,what news did you wish to give?”

English translation

Taking the Queen by the hand, Lalitā raises Her and leads Her a little way toward the northwest, where there is a long and exceedingly beautiful couch. A mattress rests upon it, covered by a lovely light-colored silk sheet edged with a fringe. Lalitā, still impatient, seats the Queen there. Facing north, the Queen stretches out both legs. Lalitā removes Rādhārānī’s bodice, while the sakhīs and mañjarīs take their appointed places around Her and begin applying scented paste and oil to Her body. Viśākhā loosens the Queen’s hair and oils each lovely lock. Lalitā sits facing Her and begins to speak in a very low voice,so low that even the mañjarīs nearby must listen intently to hear.

Lalitā says, “Last night Citrā had a dream. It was truly extraordinary; when You hear it, You will laugh heartily.”

The Queen’s eagerness increases. With the simplicity of an innocent child, She leans toward Lalitā’s face and says, “Tell me quickly, what was the dream?”

English translation

Lalitā says, “Citrā told me: ‘Sister, just before dawn I began to dream. I saw that I had arrived in a land entirely unknown to me. It certainly lay upon the bank of the Yamunā. I wondered, “Who brought me here? Where is beloved Śyāmasundara? Where are the sakhīs?” As I kept thinking, I grew frantic. The Yamunā flowed nearby, so I walked to her bank. The wonder was that beautiful palaces and charming gardens stood there, yet not a single person could be seen. Distraught and perplexed, I thought, “Whom can I ask? Who brought me here? Who can tell me where beloved Śyāmasundara is?”’”

English translation

“Then it occurred to me that earth is an all-pervading element. If she could speak, she might tell me where my Beloved was. Water too could tell me, for I had heard that it also pervades everywhere, but water does not speak either. Alas, my beloved Śyāmasundara! Where shall I discover You? Ah, yes! The element of fire is exceedingly pure. Surely, remaining here, it must be seeing my beloved Śyāmasundara. But what misfortune,it too does not know how to speak! Must I simply pine away and die? Will not even my message reach beloved Śyāmasundara?

“At that moment the rustling of a leaf reached my ears. I thought, ‘Surely my beloved Śyāmasundara has arrived while searching for me!’ Eagerly I looked in that direction, but no one appeared. Then I reflected, ‘No one has come, yet the one who carried this rustling to my ears is also unseen. Ah! Just as this sound reached my ears, my message can reach beloved Śyāmasundara’s ears in the same way. It certainly can! Who brought this sound to me? The wind! Yes,the wind cannot speak, but out of compassion it has signaled that it can render silent service and carry my message to my Beloved. Then let it be so. But no,that would not be right. Perhaps beloved Śyāmasundara wished to keep me apart and therefore sent me somewhere far away. If He receives my message, He will surely become distressed; He will summon me, or fly here Himself upon the wind. No, I cannot allow His happiness to be disturbed for the sake of mine. But, ah! How am I to decide why I have truly been separated? If only I knew the wish within beloved Śyāmasundara’s heart,if I knew that He pined for me,then I would send a message by the wind.’”

“Ah! There is one means. Space is constituted of sound; it can speak, and it too is everywhere. Yes! O space, tell me,where is my beloved Śyāmasundara? Where are my sakhīs?” Again and again within the dream I cried, “O space! Where is my beloved Śyāmasundara? Tell me quickly!”

“A few moments later I saw five deities appear upon the Yamunā’s landing. They came toward me and, while still at a distance, all five bowed their heads in obeisance. I felt embarrassed. Why should deities bow to an ordinary cowherd girl like me? I said nothing. Then one of them spoke: ‘O Goddess, we are the presiding deities of the five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, and stand before You. Please command us. What service may we perform to make our lives blessed?’

“Hearing them, I became still more shy. Yet, eager for news of beloved Śyāmasundara, I folded my hands and said, ‘O deities, I wish to know where beloved Śyāmasundara is at this moment. I am His maidservant.’

“I sensed that all five became sad at my words. They remained silent for a few moments. Growing uneasy, I said, ‘If you know, please be gracious and tell me.’

“The deities replied, ‘O Goddess, this service lies beyond our power. We know nothing of Śyāmasundara. Because You called the five of us to mind, we became qualified to behold You directly. Otherwise, even a glimpse of the shadow of greatly blessed cowherd beauties such as You is impossible for us.’”

English translation

“Hearing this, I fell into thought. After a while I said, ‘O deities, you may go. I require no other service.’

“After considering, they said, ‘O Goddess, one means may be possible.’

“‘What means?’ I asked.

“They replied, ‘If You bestow upon us the dust of Your feet, the five of us may apply that most sacred dust to our eyes. Then we shall be able to see where beloved Śyāmasundara is.’

“I was astonished and said, ‘You speak of something extraordinary. I myself cannot see beloved Śyāmasundara, yet by applying my dust to your eyes you will begin to see Him? How strange!’

“The deities knelt and said, ‘Yes, O Goddess. It is entirely true.’

“I became thoughtful and, distracted, stepped away from the place where I had been standing. Then I saw all five deities rolling upon that very spot and gathering its dust to rub into their eyes. I cried aloud, ‘Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! What are you doing? Have you all gone mad, rolling in the dust like this?’

“After a little while they stood and proclaimed, ‘Victory to You, O Goddess! All victory to You! Beloved Śyāmasundara is just about to arrive. Kindly permit us to depart.’ As they spoke, all five vanished.”

English translation

“Then I saw beloved Śyāmasundara approaching with a gentle smile. I hurried toward Him, grasped His hands, and asked, ‘How did I come here? Where had You gone?’

“Śyāmasundara smiled and said…” At this point Lalitā abruptly fell silent.

Lalitā had been recounting Citrā’s dream while the Queen listened with extraordinary calm. A mañjarī now gave Lalitā a signal, and she stopped speaking. Just then another mañjarī came from the southeastern corner and called from a distance, “Queen Lalitā! Mother is calling you.”

Hearing this, Lalitā whispered into Citrā’s ear, “You tell the rest; I am going.” She walked toward the southeastern corner and, following that mañjarī southward toward the veranda, disappeared from sight.

Citrā now narrates the remainder of her dream herself.

Citrā said, “Yes,Śyāmasundara came, and I asked Him, ‘How did I arrive here? Where had You gone?’

“Beloved Śyāmasundara smiled. ‘I went to worship the Goddess.’

“‘Which Goddess?’

“‘The blessed Tripurasundarī.’

“‘Why?’

“‘For no particular reason.’

“‘No,tell me properly. Why did You go to worship Her?’

“‘I went to ask the Goddess for power.’

“‘What for?’

“‘What will you do by knowing?’

“This time I grew annoyed with Śyāmasundara and said, ‘Very well, go! Do not tell me!’ Turning my face away, I sat down where I was.

“Beloved Śyāmasundara laughed. After a moment He said, ‘All right, listen. I shall tell you, but do not repeat it to anyone.’ He came and sat before me.

“I cast a crooked glance at my Beloved, but the instant I saw Him my displeasure vanished and I laughed. Beloved Śyāmasundara laughed again as well. Placing my hand upon His shoulder, I said, ‘Tell me.’”

English translation

“Śyāmasundara said, ‘Citre! Whenever I look upon Priyā, My eyes become motionless. Yesterday, before I arrived, all of you were placing a garland upon Her. I watched in secret and thought, “Oh, how tender are My Priyā’s limbs! How can She bear the weight of flowers? Might their petals be piercing Her delicate heart?” As I thought this, My eyes closed, and an unbroken stream of worries began: “Ah! The collyrium must surely irritate My Priyā’s eyes. Alas, ornaments are so hard; they must press painfully into Her limbs. Even this sari is very coarse,it must prick Her body. Priyā has forgotten Herself for My sake, but I cannot bear it. No, I shall forbid Her: O queen of My heart, do not wear garlands, cease applying collyrium, do not put on ornaments.” Then My Priyā would never wear them again. I know this well; I know Her heart. She wears a flower garland for Me, adorns Herself with jewels only for Me, and applies collyrium to Her eyes only for Me. All Her dress and ornament exist because I desire My Priyā to adorn Her limbs. Ah, in love for Me She has lost all discrimination and imagines that collyrium, jewels, and garlands make Her beautiful and that beloved Śyāmasundara will be still more pleased to see Her. But the truth is altogether different.’”

English translation

“‘Collyrium does not make Priyā’s eyes beautiful; rather, by entering Her eyes, the collyrium itself becomes beautiful. Ornaments do not increase the beauty of Priyā’s body; joined to Her limbs, those ornaments become infinitely more beautiful. A flower garland does not enhance the splendor of Her breast; by swaying upon that lovely breast, the garland’s own beauty becomes boundless and infinite. I allow Priyā to wear these things only so that their creation may be fulfilled and, receiving the touch of Her limbs, they may become blessed. But now I can bear it no longer. Enough, far too much! Today I shall tell the mistress of My life to abandon adornment. That alone will set everything right. Yet what shall I do about Her sari? Alas! At the slightest gesture from Me, Priyā will cast it away. She does not care in the least for society, scripture, family, dharma, body, modesty, or anything else. She knows only one thing: to offer everything joyfully into the fire for beloved Śyāmasundara’s happiness. It would never even occur to Her to wonder how She could live unclothed. She would instantly mold Herself to My desire, but people would think Her mad and deranged. They would lock Her inside the house, and in separation from Me She would pine away and die. Oh, what a terrible dilemma! How shall I resolve it?’

“‘Citre, throughout yesterday and last night I thought of nothing else. Then I remembered the grace of the Goddess. At dawn, as soon as I returned from the grove, I went to Her temple. Bowing at Her feet, I prayed. The Goddess was pleased and said, “Beloved Śyāmasundara, tell Me,what do You desire?”

“‘I asked, “O Goddess, tell Me: what is the most delicate thing in the entire universe?”

“‘The Goddess laughed. “Shall I tell You the truth?”

“‘I replied, “Yes, O Goddess, tell Me the absolute truth.”

“‘She said, “Beloved Śyāmasundara, You and Your Priyā are the most delicate of all. Nothing more delicate than the two of You ever existed, exists now, or ever shall exist.”’”

“‘Citre, hearing the Goddess, I was somewhat astonished. I thought, “My Priyā’s supreme delicacy is plainly evident, but how have I been counted among the most delicate? I do not experience this Myself. Yet the Goddess cannot lie; Her words are true in all three times. Though I do not feel that I am supremely delicate, if the Goddess says so, I shall do one thing,I shall ask a boon of Her.”

“‘Seeing Me think, the Goddess laughed again. “Yes, beloved Śyāmasundara, tell Me without hesitation whatever You desire. I shall certainly grant it.”

“‘Delighted, I said, “O Goddess, You know what dwells within every heart, so I ask one boon without reserve. Graciously give Me such power that I may enter and pervade whatever I desire. Let Me enter the collyrium with which My Priyā lines Her eyes, the kuṅkuma with which She makes the mark upon Her brow, and the musk with which She adorns Her breast. Let Me enter the fragrant pigment the sakhīs apply to Her body and the sandal paste from which designs are drawn upon Her cheeks. Let Me enter the crimson dye placed upon Her feet and every ornament She wears. Let Me enter every atom of Her sari and bodice. When Priyā places a roll of betel in Her mouth, let Me enter its leaf, its lime, and every particle of its areca nut. Let Me enter the flowers from which Her garlands are made and those She tucks into Her braid; the mirror in which She sees Her face; the handkerchief with which She wipes Her mouth; and every atom of the vessel into which She casts the remnants of betel.”’”

“‘Let Me enter every atom of the bed, couch, sheet, and pillow upon which Priyā rests. Let Me enter the water in which She bathes and the vessel from which it is poured. Let Me enter every atom of the seat upon which She dines, the tray upon which Her meal is served, and each article of food upon it. Let Me enter every atom of the glass from which She drinks and the water She consumes. Let Me enter the fan with which the sakhīs cool Her and every particle of the moving air. Let Me enter every atom of the space through which Priyā’s limbs move. Let Me enter every grain of earth touched by Her feet, and every particle of dust upon the path where She steps while walking toward home or the forest. O Goddess, how much more can I enumerate? Kindly grant Me the power to enter every atom of whatever thing I desire.’

“‘O Goddess, since yesterday My heart has been deeply sorrowful. Seeing My Priyā’s tender limbs suffer has left My mind terribly distressed. All night I pondered how I might obtain the most delicate thing of all and, through Your grace, imbue it with the power to enter everything belonging to My Priyā. Then whenever any hard object touched Her limbs, that tender thing could receive the blow upon its own heart and protect Her. You have said that I am the most delicate; therefore create this power within Me.’”

Just as Citrā reached this point, Lalitā returned and sat down beside them. Citrā remained silent for a few moments, but the Queen had grown so eager that She asked three times, “Yes, yes, what happened then? Tell me!”

Citrā continued, “Hearing beloved Śyāmasundara say this, I quickly asked, ‘What did the Goddess say after hearing Your request?’

“With an expression of immense delight, Śyāmasundara answered, ‘My dear Citre, the Goddess was exceedingly gracious and said, “So be it.”’

“At these words my heart leapt violently. My throat choked with emotion, and with great difficulty I asked, ‘Tell me truly,You are not joking? The Goddess really said, “So be it”?’

“With complete firmness and simplicity Śyāmasundara replied, ‘Yes, Citre. I speak the truth. The Goddess has given Me that power!’”

“His words made me so restless with joy that my whole body began to tremble. Inwardly I thought, ‘When I have the chance, I shall ask beloved Śyāmasundara for one thing: Beloved, I know that along with my friend Rādhā, You love all of us more than life itself. Your heart is exceedingly tender. If Your gentle heart should ever become moved in the same way toward us and You enter our ornaments, fragrant pigments, and other articles, then please grant us one mercy: give us a sign, so that we may put on and remove those things very slowly and carefully. Hearing You has awakened fear in my heart. We shall all care for our friend Rādhā, but if You should sit within our flower garlands, collyrium, or mirrors and, not knowing, we carelessly tossed them aside, how badly You might be hurt! If we ever learned that You had been injured, our hearts would burst. So whenever You do such a thing, please tell us!’

“While I thought this, beloved Śyāmasundara stared steadily at me. Seeing Him gaze so, I laughed and asked, ‘What are You looking at? Now that I see You I have recovered; before, I was so frightened that my life seemed about to leave me.’ Then I told Him about the five deities, and beloved Śyāmasundara laughed. I said, ‘Now truly tell me,what country is this? How did I come here? Where is my dear friend Rādhā? How did You suddenly arrive? How did You learn that I was here?’”

“I had scarcely finished speaking when Śyāmasundara laughed and drew me to His heart. The moment He embraced me, my eyes opened. I saw that dawn was approaching. Astonished, I thought, ‘What a remarkable dream!’ Inwardly I bowed to the blessed Tripurasundarī and prayed, ‘O Goddess, I do not know what fruit this dream will bear. Whatever may happen to me, may my beloved Śyāmasundara enjoy infinite auspiciousness.’

“While I still lay absorbed in this thought, sister Lalitā arose and came to me. I told her the dream. She laughed and said, ‘It is a most auspicious dream. I shall tell it to our friend while she bathes.’”

The Queen had listened to Citrā’s dream in grave silence. At its end She too laughs aloud, but immediately starts and looks all around. Her love has swelled until it veils Her faculty of knowing, and She instantly forgets that Citrā was describing a dream. She believes that beloved Śyāmasundara truly asked the Goddess for this boon. “He loves me more than His life; He has contrived a way to hide me wholly within His heart.” As soon as this feeling arises, the Queen sees Śyāmasundara in every atom and looks about in startled wonder. The kitchen veranda lies before Her; there She sees Śyāmasundara standing.

Meanwhile, the application of bathing paste has been completed. Taking the Queen’s hand, Lalitā asks Her to proceed to the bathing platform. The Queen rises while gathering Her veil, but suddenly runs straight toward the kitchen. She pulls so sharply that Her hand slips from Lalitā’s grasp. Lalitā swiftly runs after Her, catches Her again, assumes a slightly offended expression, and says sternly, “Go then! I shall never tell You anything again. You take a dream as truth and become utterly mad. You have not even bathed, and look, Dhaniṣṭhā has arrived. Mother Yaśodā is waiting for You.”

Lalitā’s voice greatly checks the Queen’s rushing tide of emotion. Like one awakening from a dream, She clasps Lalitā around the neck and slowly begins to weep. “I trouble you so much,” She says, “but my dear Lalite, what can I do? I do not remain conscious of Myself.”

Lalitā sees that the medicine has worked: fear of her displeasure will keep the Queen calm for a little while. With affection she says, “Look, sister, it has grown very late. Bathe quickly now.”

The Queen promptly goes to the bathing platform. Sitting upon the stool like an innocent little girl, She says, “Pour the water quickly.”

That sweet, guileless voice echoes in every sakhī’s heart, and all their eyes fill with love. Indulekhā lifts a pitcher brimming with water and pours it over the Queen’s head, while Viśākhā loosens Her hair with her hands. A thick stream runs from the Queen’s head down Her back and shoulders; driven by the water, Her supremely beautiful black tresses dance upon Her back. From either side, Raṅgadevī and Sudevī pour water over Her shoulders from two ewers. Viśākhā passes her hands over the Queen’s back, breast, arms, legs, and other limbs, gently rubbing Her body. The water’s fragrance and the divine scent of the Queen’s limbs fill the entire courtyard with perfume. As Viśākhā massages Her, it seems as though someone were grinding an exquisitely fragrant cosmetic, releasing ever more perfume with every stroke.

English translation

When the Queen has been thoroughly bathed, Viśākhā wraps Her limbs in a champak-yellow sari and removes the wet garment. With that same yellow cloth she dries the Queen’s hair and the rest of Her body. The Queen rises from the bathing platform and stands a few cubits away to the west. Tuṅgavidyā begins dressing Her in a very beautiful blue sari while Viśākhā gradually draws away the yellow one. Viśākhā fastens the blue sari securely over Her lower body, and Tuṅgavidyā arranges its upper veil. The Queen walks westward into the adornment chamber. There stands a beautifully prepared couch, a cubit and a half high, fitted with a cushion of blue velvet. The Queen sits upon it facing east.
