English translation
Swaying, He comes from the bower-house;
His waking steps are languid, and again and again He falls upon Rādhikā.
At times He starts upon the path when the fragrant breeze begins to move;
Rādhā heaves deep sighs, shrinking from the fear of separation through all the day and night.
Under the pretext of drowsiness He will not part, even a little, from His darling's body.
O Rasika, may this condition of Śyāma never depart from my heart.

In the Repose Bower, Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved lie close together upon an exquisitely beautiful bed. The bower's adornment is supremely enchanting. A soft, faint blue radiance from the jewels spreads throughout it. Yellow velvet curtains hang at the windows and stir ever so slightly in the gentle breeze flowing over the sandy bank of the Yamunā. The entire bower is filled with a most divine fragrance.

In the bower's southeastern corner stands a beautiful jewel-studded golden table. Upon it are two lovely ewers filled with pure water, together with several fine drinking glasses. Beside this table is another, bearing two wide-mouthed golden basins for washing. In the southwestern corner of the bower there is another exceptionally beautiful table holding all manner of articles for adornment. Next to it, upon yet another table, rests a very large mirror.

Yellow velvet cloth has been draped across every wall so artfully that the bower seems to have been fashioned entirely from yellow velvet. Upon the cloth are exquisite paintings of the nighttime pleasure-pastimes of Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved. They are rendered so beautifully that, on seeing them, one feels they are not paintings at all but living forms. In the eastern part of the bower stands a golden cage in which Śrī Rādhārānī's beloved female mynah, Sārī, is perched.

English translation
Dawn has arrived. Carrying a golden cage in her hand, Vṛndā comes very softly and stands near the bower door. The mañjarīs have already risen and are seated upon their own beds. With restrained gestures Vṛndā asks them something; they answer only with signs and gentle smiles. Vṛndā then moves to the eastern side of the bower. At the point where Sārī sits in her cage inside, Vṛndā peers through an opening in the window and signals to her. Sārī responds by turning her eyes. The cage in Vṛndā's hand contains a parrot and another female mynah. Vṛndā opens its door. The mynah and parrot quietly fly through the window into the bower and alight upon the cage of Rādhārānī's beloved Sārikā.

A dense array of kadamba trees surrounds the bower-palace. Many kinds of birds are perched upon them, yet every bird is perfectly still. All watch intently and listen for Vṛndā's signal. After sending the mynah and parrot inside, Vṛndā signals to a rooster perched on a nearby kadamba tree. At once the rooster cries loudly. From his call, all the birds understand that Śrī Vṛndādevī has given the command: now they are to sing in sweet voices and gently break the Divine Couple's sleep. Gradually the whole forest begins to resound with the melodious chorus of the birds.

As soon as the mynah and parrot fly from Vṛndādevī's hand, enter the bower, and perch upon the cage of the Queen's mynah, that bird begins to speak in an exceedingly sweet voice: "Come, sister! Be seated! Drink the incomparable nectar of the beauty of Priyā and Her Beloved, the whole treasure of my life, and make your eyes blessed. Ah, cast but a little glance and see how beautiful these Two appear today! All night long, with unblinking eyes, I drink the nectar of the beauty of my darling Queen and my beloved Śyāmasundara, yet my eyes are never satisfied. Sister, how could these eyes ever be satisfied? Not even a single drop from this boundless ocean of beauty can fit within my two eyes. How, then, could they attain fulfillment?"

English translation
Sārī's voice reaches the ears of Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved. Their sleep breaks, yet They remain just as They were, clasped to one another's hearts. Neither opens Their eyes. Their bodies move slightly, however, and Sārī understands that both have awakened. At that moment Vṛndā's mynah begins: "Sister, there is no limit to your good fortune! Ah, truly, as soon as one's eyes fall upon these two moonlike faces, they cling there and no longer wish to turn away. Sister, I have just flown in from outside. I saw the moon moving swiftly through the western sky. It seemed to me that the moon-god, ashamed beyond measure after beholding the loveliness of Priyā and Her Beloved's moonlike faces, was fleeing with all haste to hide his own."

Now the parrot speaks: "Sārī, tell me, did my beloved Śyāmasundara sleep peacefully through the night? Surely the joyous cries of the cakravāka birds in this forest did not disturb His sleep? I have just seen those birds sitting upon the riverbank and calling out. All night they have cried aloud, filled with delight. Now, seated facing the east, they were speaking with the setting moon while singing the virtues of Priyā and Her Beloved."

English translation
The female cakravāka was saying: "Moon-god, go now, go happily, and then return. I shall not revile you. This forest is the kingdom of my darling Rādhārānī and my beloved Śyāmasundara. Their reign will last for all eternity, and for all eternity every ordinary rule will remain reversed here. O Moon, I have heard that when you appear, the female cakravāka is separated from her beloved mate; yet I have never once been parted from mine. Look, Moon-god, I do not know what has happened to my eyes: in my mate, in you, and in every wave of the Yamunā, I see only a vision of beloved Śyāmasundara. Sometimes I become confused and think that the light in the shining sky is not yours at all, but the radiance of my beloved Śyāmasundara's moonlike face. Then I take wing and hurry toward it. But my mate flies beside me and goes ahead. I look and exclaim, 'Ah! Śyāmasundara is hidden within this cakravāka too!' Perplexed, I descend again from the sky and think, 'No, I was mistaken; it is within my own eyes that beloved Śyāmasundara's image has taken up residence.' For a long time I wondered why this had happened. Then I began to understand: the Queen's shadow falls upon all of us who dwell in the forest; Her glance falls upon us. Śyāmasundara fills Her vision and every particle of Her being, and therefore all of us forest-dwellers have come to share this same condition. O Moon-god, surrendering myself to the Queen, I beg you to return to the eastern sky as quickly as you can. When you depart, my darling Queen will unite with my beloved Śyāmasundara. Do not delay, brother! We forest-dwellers are forever indebted to the Queen's boundless compassion. Only because Her shadow has fallen upon us have we become entitled to this immeasurable, limitless good fortune. What service could I possibly offer the Queen? This much I can do: I can open my heart and plead with you. Do not fear on my account that the cakravāka will curse you. Rise in the eastern sky again as swiftly as possible. I shall welcome you with all my heart."

Taking turns over that basin, Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved wash Their hands and eyes and then rinse Their mouths. Citrā places a beautiful glass filled with cool water into the Queen's hand. The Queen holds it to Śyāmasundara's lips. Fixing His gaze upon Śrī Priyā's face, He slowly drinks half the glass. Śyāmasundara then takes it and places it against Śrī Priyā's lips. Bashful, She does not wish to drink, but with His left hand He grasps and presses His Beloved's right shoulder and, with loving insistence, keeps the glass at Her lips. Love pours from Their eyes. At last Śrī Priyā too slowly drinks a few sips of the cool water. The sakhīs then adorn Them both.

English translation
With unblinking eyes Vṛndādevī beholds the splendor of Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved. Vṛndā's maidservants have raised the window curtains. A cool, gentle, fragrant breeze flows in through the window and finds fulfillment by touching the limbs of the Divine Couple.

English translation
There is still some time before sunrise. The beauty of dawn has spread over the forest groves. Here and there around the bower, stags and does leap in graceful bounds. Cuckoos perched upon the kadamba trees sing their sweet "kuhū, kuhū" refrain. Rows of mālatī, jūhī, and many other flowering plants encircle the bower. Blossoms have opened upon them all, and bees hum over the flowers.

Now Vṛndā seems to emerge from her absorption in divine feeling. She says, "Beloved Śyāmasundara! Today my forest-dwelling sisters have adorned the woodland in wondrous array solely for You. Bestow Your glance upon it and accept their love-filled service."

English translation
At Vṛndā's words, joy spreads through all the sakhīs. Some had been seated upon Śyāmasundara's bed, others upon the floor, while still others stood encircling Them. Amid them all, the indescribable beauty of Priyā and Her Beloved flooded the entire bower with bliss.

English translation
Hearing Vṛndā's prayer, Śyāmasundara rises while arranging His scarf, and Śrī Priyā rises while gathering Her campaka-yellow sari. Together with the circle of sakhīs, They come and stand upon the bower's veranda. Dense creepers laden with blossoms surround the veranda on every side and lend it beauty. Passing through the veranda, the Queen and Śyāmasundara emerge into the bower's outer courtyard and stand there.

English translation
Stirred by gusts of gentle wind, the creepers seem to plead with Priyā and Her Beloved: "O support of my life! All night I kept You hidden within my heart. Are You leaving now? No, no, do not go!"

English translation
Ahead in the courtyard, beautiful rose-vines spread across large flowerbeds, bearing great blooming roses. Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved proceed between them. Signs of languor still remain upon Śyāmasundara's body. Again and again He leans toward Śrī Priyā, lovingly presses Her shoulder, and gazes into Her lotus face. At times He looks suddenly from side to side as though startled; then Śrī Priyā too turns anxiously in the same direction.

English translation
Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved now place Their arms around one another's necks and for a few moments gaze upon each other's lotus faces with eyes that cannot be satisfied. Then, remembering the separation to come, They both draw a single, profoundly heavy breath. Sadness spreads over Their faces, and for a few moments the sakhīs too become deeply solemn.

English translation
At that moment, wishing to cheer Them, Lalitā says to the Queen, "Girl! Do you remember, or have you forgotten? Today you must go to the forest for the worship of the Sun earlier than usual. The three-day vow of Sun worship begins today, yet you are walking no faster than an ant!"

English translation
At Lalitā's words, the Queen and Śyāmasundara are both filled with delight at the thought that They will soon meet again. Joy illuminates Their faces, and the sakhīs rejoice as well. Śyāmasundara looks toward Lalitā with a gaze brimming with gratitude and begins to walk a little faster.

English translation
Although the touch of the gentle breeze has dispelled every trace of drowsiness from Śyāmasundara and the Queen, They cleverly continue to feign languor. From time to time, while stretching, They press against each other with such ardor that They appear to long to merge entirely into one another.

Passing through the rose beds with the circle of sakhīs, Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved enter the plantain grove. Then, making Their way among beds of many kinds of intensely fragrant flowers, They reach the gate of the Repose Bower. Only a few steps beyond the gate flows the Yamunā's clear current. Leaving through the gate, Śrī Priyā and Her Beloved stand beneath a beautiful banyan tree beside the road and begin to behold the splendor of the Yamunā.
