Until the heart is joined to Hari in attachment, its many desires remain hollow, like a deer searching a mirage or someone probing an empty shell for silver. Abandoning devotion to dark Ghanshyama, the wish-fulfilling jewel, one runs after the glass trinkets of action and pleasure—like a king without a city or earth, or a young woman regarded only for wealth she does not possess. Turning from refuge in Sri Raghunatha even for heaven, one gathers the coarse taste of a donkey's fodder. Burning desire still asks for rasa, grasping foam and submerging its own head. Estranged from everyone, what welfare can come from a face turned away from the Lord? A pauper may be called Kubera, but words cannot remove the underlying poverty and doubt. The swan-like soul is imprisoned by corruption while the purifying current flows past. Says Kripanivasa: without the purpose of worship, the fool merely decorates an empty pavilion.
