Fresh English translation
Mother, friend—may the wound of attachment strike no one. A slow fire takes hold and smolders steadily; once stirred it flares again into a fierce, consuming blaze. It rubs salt into the wound, and who has any remedy to stop it? Mohan sits silent, knowing nothing of my heart. One who knows may tell another and praise what the heart has tasted, yet the very relish that seemed sweet has burned up the mind's words. The hostile thing would not listen when it seized me. Utterly hard, it lays me on its anvil and hammers out the dense mass of pleasure and pain. Its sharp chisels pierce me; again and again it blows and weighs me, then sells me into another's hands—the slave of whoever pays the price. Binding me in cruel snares, it carries off wealth, homeland, vows, and all the rest. Attachment's mad wave is a cheat's scorching fire. Until it strikes, welfare seems possible; once it does, all safety departs. Says Kripanivasa: I am sold at the feet of the Lord of the mountain-like bow.
