Fresh English translation
Listen, mad lover, to this pain: attachment to the merciless Beloved has taken hold and pain strikes at every step. There is pain in rising and sitting, pain by day and night; speech and glances are laden with it, and even the sufferer's smile is full of pain. Having put on pain as a girdle and embraced the life of a fakir, from where could comfort come? If the pain departed, what use would any pain-filled report of well-being be? Pain's captive can only tell of pain, for pain now holds me. Says Kripanivasa: to live through pain is the very way of attachment.
