Fresh English translation
There is no magistrate in the city for the lover: caught in attachment’s snare, the mind is taken captive again. Fire melts soft butter, yet cannot subdue the hardness of a thunderbolt; the arrow that kills deer cannot come near a lion’s heart. The bee dwells in fragrance, but the ketaki’s thorn still pierces it. Having already died from attachment’s secret blow, why complain of another wound? The mind has been drawn by attachment’s five arrows—why then keep crying aloud? Burned to coal in attachment’s fire, why suffer again like a serpent? After drinking one’s fill of love, how can separation keep swelling higher? The Dear One’s glance wounds: once scorched by it, why seek another cure? The moon, called a friend, becomes fire for the poor chakora of attachment. Without the fruit of night, says Kripanivasa, the lover cries ‘alas’ every day.
