Other grave diseases may be treated by every kind of effort, but neither medicine nor the physician’s secret cures the sickness of attachment that covers the heart. It spends no money and begs at no door, yet suddenly a strange fever rises within—who can describe its trembling? Knowing the mind to be tender, it bends a hard bow and draws a devastating arrow. As it strikes, the sufferer cries ‘alas,’ gasps, and seems to have life pulled away. Even after enduring this, the lover longs again to seize and embrace the Beloved. Says Kripanivasa: pierced by attachment’s arrow, one is neither dead nor alive.
