Victory to the Beloved of Janaki. Lagana-pacisi, in Raga Dhanashri and the original tala. Without the wound of devoted attachment, the mind cannot mount the lofty fortress; only when the proud neck feels pain does one begin to test its hard defects. The mind is a great elephant, drunk on poisonous wine, beyond anyone’s grasp; only attachment, the mighty goad, bows it at the Beloved’s feet. Like a startled wild creature it leaps while even powerful lions range about; yet at the mere sound of attachment’s instrument the mind dies without being struck. Filled with venom in serpent form, it fears no captor; the potent mantra of attachment makes it helpless, lying in the basket of the one it serves. The birdlike mind flies through the world as a deceiver, and no one can make it rest. When the falcon of attachment swoops, it struggles to escape. A proud and virtuous woman may remain hidden within her house, but when attachment acts as go-between her heart is sold into another’s hand. Pride, reputation, fear, family, and cleverness remain rich in the mind only until, says Kripanivasa, the pain of attachment to Ragho—Rama—enters and pervades it.
