Chapter Six — The Five Principal Rasas

Ādara-sthāyiko dāsyo hi vibhāvādyaiḥ samanvitaḥ,
Suśaraṇyājñā-karaṇa-dainyatādyair yathākramam. (19)

When reverential devotion is the enduring emotion and is joined with its proper causes, expressions, and accompanying states, it becomes the dāsya rasa of loving service. Its successive marks include taking complete refuge in Sita and Rama, obeying their command, profound humility, gentleness, and related virtues.

Sakhya-rati-sthāyī sakhyo vibhāvādyaiḥ sadā yutaḥ,
Madhura-vāk-parihāsa-harṣādibhir yathākramam. (20)

When affectionate friendship is the enduring emotion and is continually joined with its proper causes and expressions, it becomes sakhya rasa. Sweet speech, laughter, playful joking, joy, embraces, affectionate urging, and similar acts are its natural manifestations.

Vatsalatā-sthāyī-bhāvo vātsalyo vibhavair yutaḥ,
Cāpalya-pulakāniṣṭa-śaṅkādibhir yathākramam. (21)

When tender parental affection is the enduring emotion and is joined with its proper supports, it becomes vātsalya rasa. Fondly feeding and playing with the Lord, delighting in his childish restlessness, horripilation, and anxiety that some harm or evil glance might befall him are among its characteristic expressions.

Rati-sthāyī śṛṅgārako vibhāvādyaiḥ samanvitaḥ,
Mādhurya-bhrū-kuṭi-kṣepa-harṣādibhir yathākramam. (22)

When conjugal love is the enduring emotion and is joined with its proper causes, expressions, and accompanying states, it becomes śṛṅgāra rasa. Sweetness, the expressive movement of the brows, playful gestures, joy, longing, and related emotions unfold within it.
