Chapter Six — The Five Relationships of Devotion
Agastya said:
Ito gatvā tv ahaṃ vīra Rāmotsāha-samanvitaḥ,
Vivikte svāśrame sthitvā punar ālocitaṃ mayā. (1)
O heroic Hanuman, when I left this place my heart was filled with enthusiasm for Rama. Seated alone in my hermitage, I reflected once more upon all that I had heard.
Yādṛśī prītir etāsāṃ Śrī-Rāme vartate sadā,
Tādṛśī sarva-jīvānāṃ kathaṃ jāyeta Rāghave. (2)
How can every living being develop for Raghava the same kind of constant love for Sri Rama that dwells in these companions?
Etat praṣṭuṃ punar vīra hy āgato ’haṃ tavāntikam,
Kathayasva kṛpāṃ kṛtvā paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me. (3)
I have returned to you, O hero, precisely to ask this. Be gracious and explain it, for my longing to understand is very great.
Kathaṃ Śrī-Rāme samprītir jāyate Pavanātmaja,
Gṛha-deha-kuṭumbeṣu vairāgyaṃ ca kathaṃ bhavet. (4)
O son of the Wind, how does deep love for Sri Rama arise, and how does detachment from house, body, family, and worldly possession come into being?
