Chapter Three — Creatures at Peace

All the birds of the eternal spring sported freely upon the Sarayu with their mates, making its waters resound with joyous calls. (12, completed)

Kambūka-śambūka-hrasvāś ca śuktikā vamanti muktāṃ bhujagāś ca kacchapāḥ,
Anyonya-dveṣādi-rahitā vicarāḥ pibanti pīyūṣa-nibhāni kāni. (13)

Conches, snails, and even the smallest shells cast forth pearls. Serpents and tortoises, free from mutual hatred and every other hostility, moved together in harmony and drank waters resembling nectar.

Vanaṃ vanaṃ kamala-mukhair vikasitaṃ kunda-vṛnda-mallikābhiḥ,
Smitā-rucirākṛtāv anindau paraspareṇājita-śriyā ca. (14)

Forest after forest bloomed with lotus-like faces, clusters of kunda, and jasmine. Amid them the faultless Divine Couple appeared in lovely, smiling forms, each surpassing yet enhancing the other’s beauty.

Hanuman then praises the Sarayu:

Hari-nayana-saroja-vilāsa-kāriṇi praṇateṣu praṇateṣu prasanne,
Jagat-prakaṭaiva viḍambane Śrī-Sarayū tvaṃ vara-varṇini prasīda. (15)

O beautiful Sri Sarayu, who makes the lotus eyes of Hari blossom and is gracious to all who bow before you: you reveal the mystery hidden by the apparent world. I bow to you; be pleased with me.
