Chapter Six — Further Obstacles and the Birth of Eternal Love
The obstacles in verse 51 are worship of Brahma, Shankara, Indra, and other deities for material power; desire to study false scriptures; and disrespect toward true scriptures. (51, completed)
Martya-sāmānya-bhāvena gurv-ādau nāti-gauravam,
Svātantryaṃ cāpy ahaṅkāro mamakāras tathaiva ca. (52)
Further obstacles are regarding the guru and other surrendered devotees as ordinary mortals; failing to honour them with the highest reverence; considering oneself independent; and falling into egoism and possessiveness.
Dvādaśī-vimukhatvaṃ ca hy akṛtya-karaṇaṃ tathā,
Jñeyaṃ virodhi-rūpaṃ tu sva-svarūpasya sarvadā. (53)
Turning away from the observance of Dvadashi and deliberately performing actions that should not be done must always be recognized as opposed to one’s true and spontaneous nature.
Evaṃ tattva-parijñānād ācāryānugraheṇa hi,
Tat-kṣaṇe Jānakīnāthe prītir nityābhijāyate. (54)
When, through the grace of the ācārya, one obtains complete knowledge of these truths, eternal love for Janaki’s Lord arises at that very moment.
Upādiśec ca sambandhaṃ parīkṣya vidhi-vaj janam,
Vaiparītyaṃ ca no kāryaṃ kadācid bhāva-jñātṛbhiḥ. (55, continues)
The sacred relationship should be taught only after the aspirant has been examined properly and according to the prescribed method. Those who understand devotional feeling must never act contrary to this rule.
The running header on this source leaf says “Chapter Five,” although the text and verse sequence unmistakably continue Chapter Six.
