The Greatness and Completion of the Ādi Rāmāyaṇa

Global chapter 514 of 51435 passagesSource PDF pages 415418
Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 415–418 (printed pages 394–397). Structure: Thirty-five sequential passages, followed by the chapter colophon and the explicit terminal formula समाप्तमिदमादिरामायणम्. Summary: Brahmā completes his narration by identifying the text as the auspicious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa, gathered in samādhi from events of this and other cosmic ages. He recounts its confidential transmission through Rāma, his beloved, Lakṣmaṇa, Śatrughna, Hanumān, Brahmā, Hayagrīva, Agastya, and the sages. He declares its recitation purifying, protective, prosperity-giving, and especially suited to single-minded devotees who understand the rasa of Rāma's cowherd and rāsa līlās. He prescribes a festival reading from the first day of the bright half of Caitra through Rāma's birthday, together with worship and generosity to the reciter. Bhuśuṇḍa responds that Brahmā's grace has dispelled his delusion and restored the memory of his devotion through many births. Brahmā then addresses the gods, declaring Rāma's glory sufficient in itself, and closes with a benediction upon the eternally playful Rāma of Pramoda Forest. Editorial note: The scan-controlled chapter heading and terminal colophon both read Chapter Fifty-three. The terminal formula immediately following the colophon explicitly completes the Ādi Rāmāyaṇa; the subsequent dated scribal notices and index are edition apparatus and are not part of the root chapter.

—the fruit of that person's merit cannot be described by me. It equals thousands of horse sacrifices and hundreds of rājasūya sacrifices.

Passage 25

लभते भक्तिमान् मर्त्यः कथाश्रवणमात्रतः। असंख्यं लभते पुण्यं कीर्तनाच्च दिने दिने॥२५॥

I shall remain here upon this island and mountain, blessed and joyful in mind, always intoxicated by drinking the nectar of devotion to Rāma.

Passage 30

इदं श्रुतं ते वदनारविन्दाद्यशोऽमलं श्रीरघुपुङ्गवस्य। सदैव पद्मोद्भव कीर्तनीयं मया पुरो भक्तिमतां सुराणाम्॥३०॥

From your lotus mouth I have heard this stainless glory of Śrī Rāma, foremost of the Raghus. O lotus-born Brahmā, I shall always proclaim it before the devoted gods.
