Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 398–400 (printed pages 377–379). Structure: Twenty-two sequential Sanskrit passages; passage 7 is a single-line unit. Summary: Rāma assures Ayodhyā's people that they already belong to his eternal līlā and that, when their prārabdha karma is exhausted, radiant aerial cars will carry every resident—even animals, artisans, outcastes, and those of every social order—to his abode. When the citizens ask why he must leave Ayodhyā, he explains that a permanently public manifestation would dissolve the world's ordered course by granting effortless liberation to all. He therefore withdraws from universal sight while remaining eternally present in the supreme abode beyond Virajā, where his spontaneous līlā is the essence even of the unconditioned, all-pervading Brahman. He tells the citizens to remain free from anxiety, continue their prescribed service, and know that they will sport there with him forever. Editorial note: Passage 1 carries the printed note नास्ति—बड़ौ०, reporting that the first यूयं is absent in the Baroda witness. Passage 9 prints उत्सीदति चैव लोकः and records the Baroda alternative रिक्तो भवेत्; the main reading is retained. Passage 14 preserves the visibly irregular दृक्पतः, whose immediate sense is “before the sight.” Passage 15 likewise preserves the opaque रमणमञ्जनाः; its contextual force—continual delight with Rāma in the supreme abode—is rendered without silently replacing the Sanskrit. Chapter 47 begins on physical PDF page 400 immediately after the Chapter 46 colophon.

Passage 1

Śrī Rāma said: All of you who dwell in Ayodhyā are truly my own people. You have indeed entered my eternal līlā forever. Printed note: नास्ति—बड़ौ० — the first यूयं is absent in the Baroda witness.

Passage 2

When the destruction of prārabdha karma arrives, I shall lead you, my own, into my abode. When that time has fully come, at my command there will arrive—

Passage 3

divine and radiant aerial cars by the thousand, by the hundred thousand, and by the ten million, appearing in countless numbers on every side.

Passage 4

Boarding them, animals, birds, and other beings of low birth will depart for my eternal abode.

Passage 5

So too will weavers, potters, and the rest, down to caṇḍālas and outcastes. How much more certain is this for you, who abide in the Self and are firmly established in the disciplines of varṇa and āśrama?

Passage 6

Brahmins, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras, and those born from women's wombs have in every way attained my supreme abode.

You will delight in captivating sports whose very nature is bliss.

Passage 8

The people said: We have heard that Ayodhyā too is your supreme abode. Why, then, will you abandon it and go to that realm?

Passage 9

Śrī Rāma said: People, if I remained here openly forever, the course of the ages could not proceed otherwise. Every living being upon earth would gain liberation, and the world itself would come to an end. Printed note: रिक्तो भवेत्—टि०-बड़ौ० — the Baroda witness reads “would become empty” in place of the main text's उत्सीदति.

Passage 10

Therefore I shall now go to my own eternal abode, unmanifest to all worlds, the one nondual bliss of consciousness, inaccessible to the experience of ordinary people because of ignorance.

Passage 11

Common people lay hold of an object placed at a crossroads; how, then, could access to it be restricted only to all who are not common?

Passage 12

Therefore, if that reality is to remain hidden, it should be grasped only by qualified good people, not by the other common people as well.

Passage 13

At the time of my manifestation I necessarily come within the sight of the whole world; therefore I withdraw from view.

Passage 14

Whoever merely approaches me would be liberated without effort. Before whose sight does my manifest sovereignty not shine?

Passage 15

Therefore, throughout all time, all of you remain established in the supreme abode, delighting there with me forever.

Passage 16

It is beyond qualities and action, peaceful, changeless, stainless, free from every connection with māyā, pure, and without parts.

Passage 17

Passage 18

Shining on every side beyond the further bank of Virajā, my supreme station is established with the threefold-footed Brahman made its throne.

Passage 19

Its very essence is greater even than the great and is clearly defined through both numbered and unnumbered distinctions of bliss.

Passage 20

My supreme līlā is spontaneous, and within it I sport eternally. You too will sport there together with me.

Passage 21

My people, abide in this freedom from anxiety. Until that time, continue to serve me according to the procedure taught before.

Passage 22

Thus addressed, all the people bowed at his feet. Contented, they paid homage and, dismissed by him, returned to their homes.
