Rāma Declares Ayodhyā's Liberation and Garuḍa Confronts Yama

Global chapter 502 of 51428 passagesSource PDF pages 389390
Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 389–390 (printed pages 368–369). Structure: Twenty-eight sequential Sanskrit passages. Summary: Rāma assures the people of Ayodhyā that residence within his sacred circuit grants effortless liberation, even to animals, birds, outcastes, and those who merely take his name from afar. He then tells of Durnīti, a violent caṇḍāla hunter whom Yama's messengers carried away at death. Garuḍa, enraged that a resident of Rāma's domain had been seized, descends upon Saṃyamanī, routs the armed messengers, terrifies Yama's buffalo, breaks Yama's staff, and throws Yama to the ground. The chapter closes as the defeated Yama begins to address the lord of birds. Editorial note: The source's dense martial forms in passages 16–20 and 23–28 are retained without silent normalization. In particular, passage 18 prints piṣante, passage 20 prints ahanad vikramo sa tān, and passage 28 addresses khagendraṃ raṇadurmadam. The English remains conservative where the transmitted syntax is compressed.
