Rāma Reveals Eternal Pramodavana and the Way into Nitya-Līlā

Global chapter 495 of 51468 passagesSource PDF pages 371376
Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 371–376 (printed pages 350–355). Structure: Sixty-eight sequential Sanskrit passages. Summary: Rāma tells Lakṣmaṇa that when a manifest līlā concludes he returns with the complete retinue to his all-pervading eternal abode, Pramodavana. The chapter unfolds an extended vision of that realm: wish-fulfilling cows and calves, jeweled mountains, the Sarayū and Virajā, kadamba groves, loving cowherds and gopīs, sakhīs absorbed in union and separation, every season, divine cities, caves, waterfalls, lakes, birds, music, ornaments, and homes radiant with Rāma's love. Yet this rasa-filled world is also beyond speech and mind, nirguṇa, pure consciousness and bliss, the source of manifestations, avatāras, portions, kalās, and vyūhas, and eternally established within imperishable Brahman. Rāma identifies it as Sītāloka, the station of Sahajānandinī, where personified Vedas praise him as he embraces the eternal supreme Lakṣmī. One who knows Rāma's form, realm, Name, līlā, and retinue as eternal receives supreme devotion and entry into nitya-līlā. Time, which produces threefold cosmic change, is finally revealed as Rāma's servant rather than the ruler of this abode.

Passage 1

Śrī Rāma said: I return to that very place where I formerly abided and into which I withdrew—the source from which I come as the initiator of līlā, inaccessible to ordinary people. Witness note: Against the primary reading यत्र, the edition records प्रमोदवने (“in Pramodavana”) in its compared Ṭīkā and Baḍau readings. The primary root is retained.

Passage 2

I go again to that very place, my own all-pervading abode. Here, there, and beyond, the real shines forth everywhere and always.

Passage 3

When the work is complete, I enter that abode together with the entire retinue, whose essence is the rasa of eternal līlā for both knowers and devotees. Metrical note: The edition marks one pāda of passage 3 as an archaic form containing an additional syllable. The photographed wording is preserved.

Passage 4

At the moment of separation I withdraw myself into my own self—nirguṇa, being-consciousness-bliss, and beyond the reach of time and māyā.

Their friendly herds exceed tens of thousands and millions: some share one color and equal form, while principal animals lead and others guard the rear. Commentarial note: The edition glosses the dense second half as cows of one color and equal form, with principal gopālas and others serving as rear guards. That supplied sense is reflected in the English without altering the photographed root.

Passage 12

The cowherds follow the noble vow of placing everything at the service of their lord and delighting the king of cows; the herds, eager for play, gather in graceful circular companies. Source note: Passage 12 is densely set in the primary as Its pastoral sense is rendered closely without conjecturally replacing the unusual final compound.

Source note: The photographed first half is densely and irregularly set as नृत्यन्मत्तमयूरश्रीशोभाप्रावृद्धनद्यति. The English follows the clearly coordinated peacock, rainy-season, Rāma, and Sahajā imagery without conjecturally rewriting the root.
