Passage 1
भुशुण्ड उवाच— दुर्वाससि मुनिश्रेष्ठे गते स्वाश्रममुत्तमम्। किं कृतं रामचन्द्रेण तद्वदस्व मम प्रभो॥१॥
Bhuśuṇḍi said: When the eminent sage Durvāsas had gone to his excellent hermitage, what did Rāmacandra do? Tell me that, my lord.
Passage 2
ब्रह्मोवाच— प्रतीहारिपदे भ्रात्रा नियुक्तस्तद्व्यतिक्रमात्। भीतवल्लक्ष्मणः प्राह प्रणतो रामसन्निधौ॥२॥
Brahmā said: Lakṣmaṇa, who had been appointed by his brother to the gatekeeper's station, became fearful because he had crossed that command. Bowing in Rāma's presence, he spoke.
Passage 3
लक्ष्मण उवाच— भगवन् सर्वदेवेश स्वच्छायावशगो हरिः। आदिमूर्तिस्त्वमेवासि कालस्यापि नियोजकः॥३॥
Lakṣmaṇa said: Lord, master of all the gods, Hari himself moves under the power of your shadow. You alone are the primordial form and the director even of Time.
Passage 4
एतन्मे दर्शितं रूपं कृपयैवातिभीषणम्। प्राय एतद्भयेनैव वशगास्ते सुरासुराः॥४॥
By your grace this exceedingly terrifying form was shown to me. It is surely through fear of this alone that gods and demons remain under your control.
Passage 5
कोऽसौ द्वितीयः कालात्मा भीषणो भीमविग्रहः। पाचको भवदंशस्य भवान् भोक्तेव लक्ष्यते॥५॥
Who is that second one, the dreadful embodiment of Time with a fearsome form? He appears to be the cook of what belongs to your portion, while you appear to be the enjoyer.
Passage 6
किं चैकं प्रार्थयाम्यद्धा करुणाजलधावपि। त्वयि सर्वकलाधीशे भ्रातर्यपि भयानके॥६॥
And I ask one thing directly of you: although you are an ocean of compassion, lord of every power, and my brother, you are also awe-inspiring.
Passage 7
त्वया प्रतीहार्यपदे नियुक्तस्तद्व्यतिक्रमात्। सापराधोऽस्मि संवृत्तस्तेन दण्ड्योऽस्मि साम्प्रतम्॥७॥
You appointed me to the gatekeeper's station, and by crossing that charge I have become an offender. I should therefore be punished now.
Passage 8
दण्डनीयतमो लोके प्रभुणा करुणेन वा। सापराधो दासजनो हत्याज्ञा नृपशासने॥८॥
An offending servant is supremely liable to punishment in this world, whether his master is compassionate or not; in a king's decree, such an offense may bring an order of death.
Passage 9
त्वमेव जगतां नाथः सागसां दण्डकारकः। तेन मां दण्डय स्वामिन् सागसं ते व्यतिक्रमात्॥९॥
You alone are lord of the worlds and the punisher of offenders. Therefore punish me, master, for I have offended by transgressing your command.
Passage 10
इत्येवं प्रार्थितो रामो लक्ष्मणेन विशेषतः। प्रोवाच करुणः श्रीमाँल्लीलाकारणमानुषः॥१०॥
Thus earnestly petitioned by Lakṣmaṇa, compassionate and glorious Rāma—human in appearance for the sake of līlā—spoke.
Passage 11
श्रीराम उवाच— असौ यः सेवकः कालो मदाज्ञापरिपालकः। मया सह स्वकार्यार्थं प्रभुणा मन्त्रयन् स्थितः॥११॥
Śrī Rāma said: That one is Kāla, my servant and executor of my command. He stood in counsel with me, his lord, concerning the work assigned to him.
Passage 12
स एषो मम भोगार्थं त्रैलोक्यं पाचयन् प्रभुः। करोति सर्वभोगार्थं मह्यं फलसमर्पकः॥१२॥
That powerful one cooks the three worlds for my enjoyment. He makes everything an object of enjoyment and presents its fruit to me.
Passage 13
तेन सम्मन्त्रयन् कार्यं भीषणेनातिभीषणः। दृष्टस्त्वया लक्ष्मणेत्थं मा भैः संश्रद्धितोऽसि मे॥१३॥
While I was consulting about this work with that exceedingly fearsome being, you saw me in this form, Lakṣmaṇa. Do not fear; you are fully trusted by me.
Passage 14
मदीयनित्यलीलायां नित्यमेव सुसंगतम्। मदीयभ्रातरं पूर्णं महोत्सवगुणोत्करैः॥१४॥
You are eternally and perfectly joined to my eternal līlā—my own brother, complete with an abundance of the qualities of the great festival.
Passage 15
प्रतीहार्यतिक्रान्तो नैव दण्ड्योऽसि मे सखे। लीलाकालक्रमेणैव सर्वं सम्पाद्यमेव च॥१५॥
Though you crossed the gatekeeper's charge, you are not to be punished by me, my friend. Everything had to be brought about in accordance with the unfolding time of the līlā.
Passage 16
प्रमोदवनलक्ष्मीश्च प्रकाशयति भूतलम्। कृतानि देवकार्याणि रक्षिता वेदराशयः॥१६॥
The splendor of Pramodavana now illumines the earth. The gods' purposes have been accomplished, and the treasures of the Veda have been protected.
Passage 17
रक्षितश्च परो धर्मो गोवैष्णवद्विजन्मनाम्। रक्षिताश्च मखा नित्या रक्षिता मम मूर्तयः॥१७॥
The supreme dharma of cows, Vaiṣṇavas, and the twice-born has been protected; the eternal sacrifices have been protected, and my divine manifestations have been protected.
Passage 18
प्रवृत्तो भक्तिमार्गश्च कर्मज्ञानोपबृंहितः॥१८॥
The path of devotion, strengthened by sacred action and knowledge, has been set in motion.
Passage 19
नातः परं न करणीयमात्रं त्रैलोक्यरक्षा विहिता समन्तात्। प्रमुदनं धाम परं व्रजामः समस्तमर्वाग्यत एतदस्ति॥१९॥
Nothing whatever remains to be done beyond this; the protection of the three worlds has been established on every side. We shall go to the supreme Pramodana abode, for everything else lies below it. Passage 20
अव्यक्तमुच्चैः परमं पदं तदध्यासिनो तात वयं रमामः। अव्यक्तरूपाभिरपारलीलासुशक्तिभिर्नित्यविलासिनीभिः॥२०॥
Dear one, dwelling in that supreme station far above the unmanifest, we shall delight with those eternally sportive powers—unmanifest in form and endowed with boundless līlā.
