Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 313–314 (printed pages 300–301). Structure: Eighteen continuously numbered Sanskrit passages. Summary: Ātreya asks for the devotion that establishes a living relationship with Rāma. Rāma teaches that purified action ripens into Self-knowledge and then into exclusive love: the devotee hears his deeds, remembers his name, transcends death, and beholds him playing in Pramodavana with Sahajānandā. Such love is transmitted through rare rasika Vaiṣṇavas, whom Rāma calls his own embodied forms; knowledge of Brahman is inseparable from knowledge of his names, forms, and līlās.

Passage 1

Ātreya said: Now, crown of Raghu's line, teach me your own supreme devotion, by practicing which a person may enter into relationship with you.

Passage 2

Śrī Rāma said: Listen, Ātreya, and I shall explain my devotion, whose very essence is myself. Through action the mind becomes pure, and from that purity a person comes to know the Self.

Passage 3

In one who knows the Self, that supreme state consisting of me arises. Once this feeling of steadfastness in me has dawned, nothing else remains to be attained.

Passage 4

One becomes perpetually eager to hear my sacred deeds and is filled to overflowing with the supreme bliss born from remembering my name.

Passage 5

Wholly intent upon me as one's foundation, one never longs for anything else. Setting one's foot upon the head of death, one moves freely everywhere.

Passage 6

Dispassionate toward both this world and the next and sheltered at my feet, one should dwell eternally in my forest called Pramodavana.

Passage 7

There, inundated with boundless love, the devotee beholds me at play—auspicious and accompanied by Sahajānandā and her companions.

Passage 8

I am absorbed in music sung to the wondrous sound of the flute, dressed in marvelous attire and adorned with jewels; my face shines like the orb of the moon flooded by a gentle smile, as I sport with Modavatī.

Passage 9

Remember me, Rāmacandra: my uniquely beautiful chest is ornamented with pigments from the caverns of the wondrous jeweled mountain, and my splendid lofty head is adorned with pearl earrings and garlands.

Passage 10

Seeing me in this form, the devotee becomes bound to me in love. Through my grace, with undivided understanding, one swiftly receives the full measure of love.

Passage 11

Once love for me has been attained, there is truly nothing further to attain. Rasika devotees of this kind are Vaiṣṇavas who share in divine love.

Passage 12

Relationship with them is exceedingly rare; how could it be gained without accumulated blessing? Yet it comes to the virtuous who devote themselves to serving their lotus feet.

Passage 13

Through them, exalted and radiant sources of blessedness, love of the Lord becomes readily attainable. Simply by receiving their words, purity arises in the mind.

Passage 14

By only the slightest trace of their grace one crosses the ocean of becoming. By eating the remnants of their food one may attain all-knowing insight. Even the gods and those learned in Viṣṇu cannot comprehend their true nature.

Passage 15

Although visible to the eye, sage, they are proclaimed to be directly my own embodied forms. By those who partake of supreme love, I—the immeasurable knower of higher and lower reality—am brought under the power of love.

Passage 16

Those bold devotees of mine know my true nature and participate in my līlās. They have offered me their understanding, their speech, and their hearing.

Passage 17

In every activity they continually engage with me alone as the one who assumes all forms. Such devotees are therefore renowned as knowers of Brahman.

Passage 18

No other human beings ever become knowers of Brahman here apart from the unsurpassed knowledge of my names, forms, and līlās.

** Thus ends Chapter Eleven of the Śrī Rāma Gītā taught in response to Ātreya, within the dialogue of Śrī Rāma and the sage of Atri's line in the Uttara-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa, in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa.
