Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— ततः सुमित्रातनयो ददर्श तौ भीषणौ राघवरामकालौ। अवर्षकालाम्बुदकालरूपौ ज्वालावलोकोटिपरीतकालौ॥१॥
Brahmā said: Then Sumitrā's son saw the two terrifying figures—Rāghava Rāma and Time—dark as storm clouds appearing out of season, encircled by tens of millions of blazing flames.
Passage 2
जगद्ग्रसन्तौ ससुरासुरं स्वैर्मुखैरवमाद्भिः प्रलयाग्निकीलम्। कोट्यर्कसन्दोहकरालदंष्ट्राजिह्वाग्रविद्युल्ललनातिभीमौ॥२॥
With their immense mouths they seemed to swallow the world together with gods and demons, like tongues of fire at dissolution. Their terrible fangs shone like masses of tens of millions of suns, while lightning danced at the tips of their tongues.
Passage 3
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रौ नक्षत्रताराग्रहचित्रदेहौ। वज्रप्रपातप्रसभोद्धताक्षिकोणप्रभाशोणधरान्तरिक्षौ॥३॥
They possessed countless arms, bellies, faces, and eyes; stars, constellations, and planets patterned their bodies. The violent radiance streaming from the corners of their eyes, like falling thunderbolts, reddened earth and sky.
Passage 4
परिज्वलन्तौ प्रलयाग्नितुल्यौ सुघोरनिःश्वासगभीरघोषौ। दंष्ट्राग्रलग्नाधिकचूर्णिताङ्गब्रह्मादिशक्रादिसुरौघरावौ॥४॥
They blazed like the fire of dissolution, their dreadful breathing producing a profound roar. Hosts of gods beginning with Brahmā and Indra seemed crushed upon the tips of their fangs and cried aloud.
Passage 5
अनेकचण्डातपनोऽग्रतेजोनिवारिताशेषभवान्धकारौ। महस्तपन्तौ तपनीयभासौ करालदुर्दर्शशरीरभासौ॥५॥
Their foremost splendor, fiercer than many blazing suns, dispelled all the darkness of existence. They burned with golden radiance, their bodily brilliance terrifying and impossible to behold. Passage 6
तयोः शरीरे पुनरेषोऽभ्यपश्यत् पञ्चाशकोटिप्रमितां धरित्रीम्। सकाननां साब्धिजलाद्रिकुञ्जां सद्वीपवर्षां सपुरग्रामदेशाम्॥६॥
Within each of their bodies Lakṣmaṇa saw an earth measured at fifty crores in extent, with forests, oceans, waters, mountains, and bowers, with its islands, continents, cities, villages, and regions.
Passage 7
वरुणस्यालयं चैव तथैव यमसादनम्। नरकान् विविधांश्चैव स्वर्गांश्चैवातिसुन्दरान्॥७॥
He saw Varuṇa's abode and likewise Yama's dwelling, many different hells, and exceedingly beautiful heavens.
Passage 8
देवानां च तथा लोकान् गन्धर्वाणां गृहांस्तथा। इन्द्रस्याप्यालयं दिव्यं ब्रह्मरुद्रालयांस्तथा॥८॥
He saw the worlds of the gods and the homes of the gandharvas, Indra's divine residence, and the abodes of Brahmā and Rudra.
Passage 9
अथोभागात्समस्तांश्च बलिसद्म तथैव च। सर्वाश्चर्यमयं विश्वं तयोर्देहे व्यलोकयत्॥९॥
He also saw all the lower regions and Bali's dwelling. Within both bodies he beheld the entire wonder-filled universe.
Passage 10
उभौ च समरूपौ तावुभौ तुल्यपराक्रमौ। एकं जगत्पालयन्तं ग्रसन्तं च परं विभुम्॥१०॥
The two had identical forms and equal might; yet one protected the world, while the other mighty being devoured it.
Passage 11
कालः पाचयते विश्वं ग्रसते राम ईश्वरः। अत्ता चराचरस्यापि महाभोगरसोत्सुकः॥११॥
Time ripens the universe, but sovereign Rāma consumes it. He is the eater even of all that moves and does not move, delighting in the rasa of that supreme enjoyment.
Passage 12
एवंविधौ तौ दृष्ट्वाथ महतीं भीतिमागतः। अदृष्टपूर्वं रामस्य स्वरूपं सद्वितीयकम्॥१२॥
Seeing the two in this form, Lakṣmaṇa was seized by immense fear. Never before had he seen Rāma's own form accompanied by such a counterpart.
Passage 13
विलोक्य लक्ष्मणो भूरि संशयं च जगाम ह। अनयोः को रामचन्द्रः किं वा कोऽपि न राघवः॥१३॥
As he looked, Lakṣmaṇa fell into profound doubt: “Which of these two is Rāmacandra? Or is neither one Rāghava?”
Passage 14
ईदृशो न मया दृष्टो रावणस्य वधेऽपि सः। न वा सुबाहुसङ्ग्रामे न वापि ताटकावधे॥१४॥
“I did not see him like this even when Rāvaṇa was slain, nor in the battle with Subāhu, nor at the killing of Tāṭakā.”
Passage 15
न छायासुरसङ्ग्रामे नान्तकालेऽपि चेदृशः। अन्यादृशो मम भ्राता कथमद्य विलोक्यते॥१५॥
“Not in the battle with Chāyāsura, nor even at the final hour, did he appear so. Why does my brother look utterly different today?”
Passage 16
द्वितीयश्च तथा कोऽयं रुद्रो वान्तक एव वा। इत्थं चिन्तासमाविष्टो लक्ष्मणः स्तिमितो भिया॥१६॥
“And who is this second being—Rudra, or perhaps Death himself?” Absorbed in such thoughts, Lakṣmaṇa became motionless with fear.
Passage 17
मूर्च्छामाय ततः सद्यो निजे नेत्रे न्यमीलयत्। तावत्तथैव पुरतो रामचन्द्रो व्यदृश्यत। यथा पूर्वं स्थितो दृष्टः सिंहासनवरे नृपः॥१७॥
Faintness overtook him, and at once he closed his eyes. When he looked again, Rāmacandra appeared before him just as before—the king seated upon his excellent throne.
Passage 18
कालश्च प्रभुणा दत्तां ताम्बूलदलवीटिकाम्। प्रसादत्वेन सङ्गृह्य जगाम निजसादनम्॥१८॥ Time accepted as grace the folded betel leaf given by the Lord and departed for his own abode. **इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे उत्तरखण्डे कालदमनोपाख्याने सप्तमोऽध्यायः॥७॥
** Thus ends Chapter Seven in the episode of the subduing of Time, in the Uttara-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa, in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa.
