Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— तत्र गत्वा ददर्शासौ रामं त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरम्। ननाम दण्डवद्भूमौ प्रीतः पुलकविग्रहः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Going there, Time saw Rāma, beauty of the three worlds. Filled with joy and with his body thrilled, he prostrated himself upon the ground.
Passage 2
उवाच रघुशार्दूलस्तं प्रपन्नतरं पुनः॥२॥
The tiger of Raghu's line then spoke again to Time, who had wholly surrendered.
Passage 3
श्रीराम उवाच— काल त्वं मम भक्तोऽसि मदीहितकरस्तथा॥३॥
Śrī Rāma said: Time, you are my devotee and the agent who carries out my intention.
Passage 4
सम्पादितं देवकार्यं मया तावत्समन्ततः। अधुना रन्तुमिच्छामि प्रमोदविपिने सुखम्॥४॥
I have now accomplished the gods' work in every respect. I wish henceforth to delight happily in the forest of Pramodavana.
Passage 5
सत्यं ब्रह्मवचः कर्तुं त्वदीयं च तथा हितम्। तेन त्वां मन्त्रयाम्यद्य स्वसामर्थ्यं प्रसारय॥५॥
To make Brahmā's statement true and to fulfill your proper purpose, I counsel you today: extend your own power.
Passage 6
अन्यथा कुरु लोकं त्वं स्वबलावेशधारणात्। मदाज्ञया तु वै तावत्तव शक्तिर्विजृम्भताम्॥६॥
Transform the world by bringing your own force to bear upon it. At my command, let your power now unfold.
Passage 7
मदाज्ञयैवाधुना त्वं निजां शक्तिं प्रसारय। वसुधां वसुभिः पूर्णां सङ्कोचय बलादिमाम्॥७॥
By my command, extend your power now. Force this earth, presently filled with riches, to contract.
Passage 8
मणीनामाकरेष्वङ्ग सौवर्णेष्वाकरेषु च। कन्दरासु निधिस्थानेष्वनन्यश्रीप्रदायिषु॥८॥
Do so in mines of jewels, dear one, in mines of gold, in caverns and treasure places that bestow incomparable prosperity.
Passage 9
वनेषु च फलाढ्येषु रत्नशैलेषु भूरिषु। प्रत्यक्षलक्ष्मीस्थानेषु प्रसारय निजं बलम्॥९॥
Extend your force through fruit-laden forests, through the many mountains of jewels, and through places where Lakṣmī is visibly present.
Passage 10
सरःसु पद्मपूर्णेषु परागौघसुगन्धिषु। राजहंसकलध्वानमनोहारिषु वीचिषु॥१०॥
Extend it through lakes filled with lotuses and fragrant with masses of pollen, whose waves enchant the mind with the soft cries of royal swans.
Passage 11
रत्ननिःश्रेणिकाशोभामण्डितेषु महत्सु च। समुद्रतुल्यरूपेषु दिव्यरत्नाकरेषु च॥११॥
Extend it through great waters adorned by the beauty of jeweled stairways, ocean-like in form and repositories of divine gems.
Passage 12
मुक्तामाणिक्यशोभाढ्येष्वनन्तगुणवत्सु च। देवाङ्गनादेवयानमानसादिषु भूरिशः॥१२॥
Extend it through places rich in the beauty of pearls and rubies and endowed with endless qualities, and through the many celestial lakes such as those of the divine women and gods.
Passage 13
श्रीसंकोचकरं तेषु प्रसारय निजं बलम्। अग्निहोत्रेषु विप्राणां यज्ञस्थानेषु कोटिशः॥१३॥
Spread your force there so that prosperity contracts; extend it through brahmins' fire offerings and through tens of millions of sacrificial grounds.
Passage 14
प्रत्यक्षवह्निस्थानेषु धर्मकर्मालयेषु च। ब्रह्मादिषु च देवेषु रुद्रशक्रादिकेषु च॥१४॥
Extend it through places where sacred fire is visibly present, through abodes of righteous works, and through the gods beginning with Brahmā, Rudra, and Indra.
Passage 15
श्रीविद्यादिषु विद्यासु महाविद्यासु सर्वशः। चिन्तामणिपराढ्येषु मन्त्रेष्वद्वयवाचिषु॥१५॥
Extend it through sacred sciences such as Śrīvidyā and through every Mahāvidyā, and through nondual mantras supremely enriched with wish-fulfilling power.
Passage 16
हृदयादिषु चाग्र्येषु महासाम्राज्यदायिषु। नृसिंहे च हयग्रीवे श्रीमद्गोपालमन्त्रके॥१६॥
Extend it through the foremost heart-mantras that bestow great sovereignty, through the mantras of Nṛsiṃha and Hayagrīva, and through the glorious Gopāla mantra.
Passage 17
स्वयंलक्ष्म्याश्च मन्त्रेषु मन्त्रशक्तिबलासु च। स्वयं कामकलायां च बहुशक्तिषु वस्तुषु॥१७॥
Extend it through the mantras of Lakṣmī herself and their potent powers, through Kāmakalā herself, and through objects bearing manifold energies.
Passage 18
स्वयंसिद्धेषु चार्थेषु रत्नभेषजवस्तुषु। गुटिकायक्षवेतालचेटकेषु च सर्वशः॥१८॥
Extend it through self-perfecting substances, jewels, medicines, magical pellets, yakṣas, vetālas, and every kind of spirit-servant.
Passage 19
महौषधिषु सर्वासु कल्पवृक्षादिशाखिषु। लतासु देवताख्यासु शिलासु देवतात्मसु॥१९॥
Extend it through every great medicinal plant, through trees such as the wish-fulfilling tree, through vines bearing divine names, and through stones embodying deities.
Passage 20
प्रत्यक्षशक्तिसिद्धेषु पदार्थेष्वेषु भूरिषु। तिरोभावकरं कार्यं स्वसामर्थ्यं प्रसारय॥२०॥
Spread your power through all these many substances whose potency is visibly perfected, performing the work of making them disappear.
Passage 21
इति सम्मन्त्र्य कालेन रघूणां वल्लभो नृपः। यावत्ताम्बूलिकामस्मै ददाति निजपाणिना॥२१॥
Having thus taken counsel with Time, the beloved king of the Raghus gave him betel with his own hand.
Passage 22
रत्नाङ्गुलीयकगणैर्भूषितेनामितौजसा। यावद्विसर्जयेत्तं च कालं त्रैलोक्यभीषणम्॥२२॥
With that immeasurably radiant hand adorned by many jeweled rings, Rāma was just dismissing Time, terror of the three worlds.
Passage 23
सिंहासनान्तपार्श्वस्थं निरुक्ताज्ञाकं प्रभोः। तावदत्रेः सुतो योगी दुर्वासा मुनिसत्तमः॥२३॥
While Time stood near the side of the throne, having received the Lord's explicit command, the great yogin and foremost sage Durvāsā, son of Atri, arrived.
Passage 24
प्रकृत्या कोपनोऽशान्तः शापमूर्तिरुपागतः। तं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणो द्वाःस्थः सद्य एवोदतिष्ठत॥२४॥
Irascible by nature, restless, and like a curse embodied, he approached. Seeing him, Lakṣmaṇa, stationed at the door, immediately rose.
Passage 25
प्रणामं महीं स्पृष्ट्वा यावत्पाद्यार्चनादिभिः। गृह्णाति मुनिशार्दूलं तावदाह मुनिः स्वयम्॥२५॥
Lakṣmaṇa touched the earth in reverence and began receiving the tiger among sages with water for his feet and other honors; meanwhile the sage himself spoke.
Passage 26
दुर्वासा उवाच— गच्छ लक्ष्मण यत्रास्ति रामस्त्रैलोक्यवल्लभः। मदागमनमेतस्मै निवेदय च सत्वरम्॥२६॥
Durvāsā said: Go, Lakṣmaṇa, to where Rāma, beloved of the three worlds, is staying, and quickly announce my arrival to him.
Passage 27
ततः स चिन्तयाविष्टो लक्ष्मणः प्रत्युवाच तम्। एवमेव करिष्यामि क्षणं विश्रम्यतां मुने॥२७॥
Overcome by thought, Lakṣmaṇa answered him: “I shall certainly do so. Sage, please rest for a moment.”
Passage 28
यावत्कार्यान्तरे व्यग्रं रामदेवं जगत्प्रभुम्। यास्यामि यत्प्रातीहार्ये स वै मामभ्यषेचयत्॥२८॥
“As soon as Lord Rāma, master of the world, is no longer occupied with another matter, I shall go to him; he himself appointed me to this duty at the door.”
Passage 29
दुर्वासा उवाच— रघूणां राजवर्याणां गृहे रीतिः सनातनी। मुनयोऽवारितद्वारा विशन्त्यन्तःपुरेष्वपि॥२९॥
Durvāsā said: In the house of Raghu's noble kings there is an ancient custom: sages enter without obstruction even into the inner apartments.
Passage 30
त्वं चेदद्य समायान्तं मां तस्मै न वदिष्यसि। सद्यो लक्ष्मण शप्स्यामि कोपेन विकटाकृतिः॥३०॥
If you do not tell him that I have arrived today, Lakṣmaṇa, I shall assume a terrible form in anger and curse you at once.
Passage 31
ततः स लक्ष्मणो वीरश्चिन्तामाप महत्तराम्। शापभीतो मुनेः किं नु गच्छामि भ्रातुरन्तिकम्। ततो भ्राता भवेत् क्रुद्धः प्रातीहार्यव्यतिक्रमात्॥३१॥
Then heroic Lakṣmaṇa fell into deep anxiety: “Afraid of the sage's curse, should I go into my brother's presence? My brother may then grow angry because I violated my duty at the door.”
Passage 32
अथ चेन्नैव गच्छामि तदा शापं ददात्ययम्। आत्रेयः कोपनो विप्रो विलम्बासहनो मुनिः॥३२॥
“But if I do not go, this irascible brahmin sage, son of Atri and unable to endure delay, will pronounce a curse.”
Passage 33
इति चिन्ताद्वयाविष्टो जगाम भ्रातुरन्तिकम्। समं कालेन यत्रासौ भगवान् मन्त्रयन् स्थितः॥३३॥ Caught between those two anxieties, Lakṣmaṇa went into his brother's presence, where the blessed Lord was still conferring with Time. **इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे उत्तरखण्डे कालदमनोपाख्याने षष्ठोऽध्यायः॥६॥
** Thus ends Chapter Six in the episode of the subduing of Time, in the Uttara-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa, in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa.
