Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 200–203 (printed pages 186–189). Structure: Forty continuously numbered Sanskrit verses. Verses 1–13 describe Sahajā and Rāma's growth, the two cowherd settlements on the Sarayū, and the divine Mañjuvaṭa between them; verses 14–25 portray their childhood play and the single love that appears divided between them; verses 26–34 recount their deepening attraction and their meeting when Sahajā is five and Rāma six; and verses 35–40 describe their simultaneous swoon and return to their respective homes. Summary: Sahajā and Rāma grow in beauty and divine powers. Nandana rules Pālīgrāma north of the Sarayū while Sukhita rules Nandigrāma to the south, and the vast jeweled Mañjuvaṭa stands between their prosperous cowherd settlements. From childhood Sahajā and Rāma meet there with their companions, sharing play, food, rest, flower gathering, and calf tending. Their one supreme love seems divided only because each takes the other as its object. Sahajā is born among cowherds as love itself, the fullest embodiment of prema-bhakti and Rāma's dearest beloved. When the five-year-old Sahajā and six-year-old Rāma behold one another beneath the banyan, each loses awareness. Their companions and nurses carry them separately back to Pālīgrāma and Sukhita's settlement. The Two Settlements and the Divine Mañjuvaṭa
